Coltan (the African trade name for columbite‐tantalite, a tantalum ore) is one of several raw materials that finance the civil wars in the eastern provinces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. To improve the transparency along the tantalum trade chain, a ‘certificate of origin’ for so‐called ‘conflict minerals’ has been recommended by the United Nations. Accordingly, the German Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR) has developed an analytical fingerprint procedure for coltan. Mineral formation age, modal mineralogy and chemical composition are important fingerprint parameters. The original workflow to obtain these parameters was streamlined and is now based on mineral liberation analysis and LA‐ICP‐MS. The use of an ICP‐MS instrument with a detector system covering an extended linear dynamic range and the application of an internal standard‐independent calibration strategy allowed data for major and trace element determination and mineral formation age estimates to be obtained simultaneously. The analytical results of this new approach were compared with analytical techniques of the original workflow and showed excellent agreement in terms of mineralogical and chemical characterisation and mineral formation age of coltan samples. Within a test, samples of different origin were allocated correctly and simple, binary mixtures were also identified successfully.  相似文献

The North Sea Benthos Project 2000 was initiated as a follow-up to the 1986 ICES North Sea Benthos Survey with the major aim to identify changes in the macrofauna species distribution and community structure in the North Sea and their likely causes.The results showed that the large-scale spatial distribution of macrofauna communities in the North Sea hardly changed between 1986 and 2000, with the main divisions at the 50 m and 100 m depth contours. Water temperature and salinity as well as wave exposure, tidal stress and primary production were influential environmental factors on a large (North Sea-wide) spatial scale.The increase in abundance and regional changes in distribution of various species with a southern distribution in the North Sea in 2000 were largely associated with an increase in sea surface temperature, primary production and, thus, food supply. This can be most likely related to the North Sea hydro-climate change in the late 1980s influenced by the variability in the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO). Only one cold-temperate species decreased in abundance in 2000 at most of the stations. Indications for newly established populations of offshore non-native species were not found.Differences in macrofauna community structure on localised spatial scales were predominantly found north of the 50 m depth contour off the British coast along the Flamborough Head Front towards the Dogger Bank, off the coast of Jutland and at the Frisian Front. These changes were most likely attributed to stronger frontal systems in 2000 caused by the increased inflow of Atlantic water masses in relation to the hydro-climate change in the late 1980s.  相似文献

Rocks are weathered by chemical and physical processes into a mixture of loose material that produces soil. Mineralogical and textural changes are involved, which can be detected by imagery through digital image processing based on rock spectral behaviour as recorded by ground and laboratory spectrometers. Different densities of vegetation cover can be mapped qualifying further evolution of the area in terms of erosion, transport and sedimentation. Hyperspectral imagery helps to map the weathering front and different degrees of weathering on granite rock through mineralogical and textural associations related to the geomorphological processes in the area on various granitic facies. Abundance of feldspar and porfidic texture on the fresh rock are the critical parameters conditioning intensity of weathering in the area. Maps spectrally elaborated gather information on lithologies, mineralogical changes produced by geomorphological processes associated to landforms, topography and climate. Such maps contribute to estimating the spatial controls of erosion, suggesting soil particle size distribution, soil aggregation, soil depth, and consequently, helping to elaborate soil loss and soil conservation maps.  相似文献

The assessment of the loss potential caused by natural perils is a very important task for all insurance companies working in hazard-prone markets. It has to be based on two crucial items: the frequency of events and the investigation of their effects on the insured portfolio. This article deals with the second aspect, i.e. an evaluation of the insured damage caused by two earthquakes, namely those occurring near Albstadt, Germany, on 3 September 1978, and in central Chile on 3 March 1985. The results of the analysis of the earthquake in central Chile enable the mean damage ratio (damage in relation to the value) to be related to the height and the type of construction of the buildings affected. The Albstadt earthquake data permit an illustration of the effects of the type of subsoil on the mean damage ratio. The damage to individual buildings can be described by a lognormal distribution. Possible applications of these results are mentioned.  相似文献

Presented is a simple mass-balance approach to evaluate the efficiency of dredged sedimentation traps for the elimination of suspended matter and phosphorus (P). Sediment parameters inside and outside the traps were analysed from three river mouths in northern Germany. In the pits, a fine-grained sediment richer in iron, P, and organic content than the surrounding sediment was trapped. However, the sediment P fractionation carried out indicates that no increased release of P is expected, which is not different from those found in natural beds. The River Elbe is one of the biggest streams carrying pollutants of all kinds into the North Sea. However, investigations of direct effects of the Elbe water on river life are not numerous. Early life stages of common whitefish and carp were reared under comparable conditions in water of the River Elbe, and in tap water, respectively. No direct effects on the viability of the fry could be found by observing mortality and growth rates in both treatments. Whitefish larvae were severely infested by parasitic ciliates which were able to build up a dense population in the river water. In these experiments life conditions for the protozoa seemed to be much better than in tap water. Mortality rates of early larvae of common whitefish were lower in the Elbe water than in tap water. Mortality, growth rate and starvation resistance of carp fry was equal in river and tap water.  相似文献

One of the largest brown coal producing districts in the world is the Miocene of Niederlausitz Lignite area in the southeastern part of Germany. Production is in a range of 320 million t/yr. The resources of the first (shallowest) Miocene seam have nearly been exhausted and it is now mainly the second seam which is being mined. A fourth is being explored. The third Miocene and the Oligocene seam, Calau, are unminable. All brown coal is mined in open pits. The rank of brown coal of the second Miocene seam ranges from fuel coal to coking coal. Its heat value (dry) from 22.2 to 23.5 MJ, its ash content (dry) from 6% to 13%, its moisture from 57% to 59%, and its seam thickness from 10 to 12 m. Due to the close relationship between swamp facies and the main coal quality parameters, the coal quality can be directly determined from the drill log.The Oligocene and Miocene brown coal formation was synchronous with the alpine orogenesis and the seafloor spreading of the North Atlantic Ocean, which both caused north and east oriented migrations of the labile basement of central Europe. Periods of compression alternated with longer periods of isostatic subsidence and sedimentation. Additionally, the trends of thickness and facies of sediments were controlled by a block system in the basement of the brown coal district of Niederlausitz, uplifting, subsiding, collapsing, rotating or spreading.The second Lower Miocene seam is situated at sea level in the north of the Niederlausitz area and rises to the south to +150 to +180 m above sea level, due to considerable widespread subsidence and uplifting since the Lower Miocene. Horizontal tectonic movements were caused by the collapse of asymmetric grabens with slight tendency to rotation. Regional shear movements led to block faulting followed by volcanism. Counter-clockwise rotation of the basement blocks is assumed, a hypothesis supported by recent tension measurements and seismic observations. Ice cover in the Pleistocene caused wide destruction zones, narrow and deep channels and intensively folded or imbricated seam structures. Some gravity-induced plastic structures were also formed.  相似文献
