The Apollo whole-disk lunar photographs, with spacecraft lunar nadirs about 70° from the center of mean face, have considerable selenodetic potential provided that the requirements of resolution and precision can be met. Uncertainties in the internal camera geometry degrade the precision and make selenodetic applications doubtful, but selenographic work based on the assumption of a rigorously spherical moon makes lesser demands on the data and is still possible with useful accuracy. The selenographic method is fully developed here and applied to photographs 2505 and 2506 of Apollo 8 to produce a catalog of 635 positions. Of these 206 are farside and extend to 130° East Longitude. A new type of 5-character position word, appropriate for the entire lunar sphere, is used to define sequence in the catalog. 相似文献

A synoptic oceanographic study was conducted in August 1978 at the Middle Atlantic shelfbreak along the shelf-slope front and over the Wilmington Canyon. Four masses (surface, cold pool, shelf, and slope waters) were identified from nutrients and hydrographic variables. Also identified were two pycnocline mixing regimes; one between cold pool and slope waters across the inverted thermocline at the bottom of the cold bool protruding off the shelf, and the other directly across the summer thermocline between slope and shelf waters seaward of the cold pool. These two distinct mixing regimes appear to provide some of the common means for water exchange across the shelf-slope front. The associated mixing may be promoted by the circulation and mixing anomalies induced over canyon topographies. Physical data suggested a cyclonic flow pattern over the Wilmington Canyon, with warm slope water moving up its axis and cold pool water moving off its southwest flank. The above water masses were best identified chemically on the basis of oxygen saturation due to the high apparent photosynthesis at the shelf-slope front. Exposure to traffic‐related pollutants is associated with both morbidity and mortality. Because vehicle‐exhaust are highly localized, within a few hundred meters of heavily traveled roadways, highly accurate spatial data are critical in studies concerned with exposure to vehicle emissions. We compared the positional accuracy of a widely used U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) roadway network containing traffic activity data versus a global positioning system (GPS)‐validated road network without traffic information; developed a geographical information system (GIS)‐based methodology for producing improved roadway data associated with traffic activities; evaluated errors from geocoding processes; and used the CALINE4 dispersion model to demonstrate potential exposure misclassifications due to inaccurate roadway data or incorrectly geocoded addresses. The GIS‐based algorithm we developed was effective in transferring vehicle activity information from the less accurate USGS roadway network to a GPS‐accurate road network, with a match rate exceeding 95%. Large discrepancies, up to hundreds of meters, were found between the two roadway networks, with the GPS‐validated network having higher spatial accuracy. In addition, identifying and correcting errors associated with geocoding resulted in improved address matching. We demonstrated that discrepancies in roadway geometry and geocoding errors, can lead to serious exposure misclassifications, up to an order of magnitude in assigned pollutant concentrations. 相似文献

The latest Permian was a time of major change in ocean chemistry, accompanying the greatest mass extinction of the Phanerozoic. To examine the nature of these changes, samples from two well-studied marine sections that span the Permian-Triassic boundary have been analyzed: the Meishan and Shangsi sections located in Southern China. Isotopic analysis of the carbonate-associated sulfate in these samples provides a detailed record of several isotopic shifts in δ34SCAS approaching and across the PTB, ranging from +30 to −15‰ (VCDT), with repeated asynchronous fluctuations at the two locations. We interpret the patterns of isotopic shifts, in conjunction with other data, to indicate a shallow unstable chemocline overlying euxinic deep-water which periodically upwelled into the photic zone. These chemocline upward excursion events introduced sulfide to the photic zone stimulating a bloom of phototrophic sulfur oxidizing bacteria. We hypothesize that elemental sulfur globules produced by these organisms and 34S-depleted pyrite produced in the euxinic water column were deposited in the sediment; later oxidation led to incorporation as CAS. This created the large changes to the δ34SCAS observed in the latest Permian at these locations. 相似文献

Soil‐covered upland landscapes constitute a critical part of the habitable world. Our understanding of how they evolve as a function of different climatic, tectonic and geological regimes is important across a wide range of disciplines and depends, in part, on understanding the links between chemical and physical weathering processes. Extensive previous work has shown that soil production rates decrease with increasing soil column thickness, but chemical weathering rates were not measured. Here we examine a granitic, soil‐mantled hillslope at Point Reyes, California, where soil production rates were determined using in situ produced cosmogenic nuclides (10Be and 26Al), and we quantify the extent as well as the rates of chemical weathering of the saprolite from beneath soil from across the landscape. We collected saprolite samples from the base of soil pits and analysed them for abrasion pH as well as for major and trace elements by X‐ray fluorescence spectroscopy, and for clay mineralogy by X‐ray diffraction spectroscopy. Our results show for the first time that chemical weathering rates decrease with increasing soil thickness and account for 13 to 51 per cent of total denudation. We also show that spatial variation in chemical weathering appears to be topographically controlled: weathering rate decreases with slope across the divergent ridge and increases with upslope contributing area in the convergent swale. Furthermore, to determine the best measure for the extent of saprolite weathering, we compared four different chemical weathering indices – the Vogt ratio, the chemical index of alteration (CIA), Parker's index, and the silicon–aluminium ratio – with saprolite pH. Measurements of the CIA were the most closely correlated with saprolite pH, showing that weathering intensity decreases linearly with an increase in saprolite pH from 4·7 to almost 7. Data presented here are among the first to couple directly rates of soil production and chemical weathering with how topography is likely to control weathering at a hillslope scale. Abstract A snowmelt runoff model is derived for relatively small rivers. The model involves the main components of the catchment water budget, physiographical and some other factors: water equivalent of snow cover, precipitation, antecedent moisture content, daily snowmelt, non-uniformity of snow cover, retention capacity of the basin, and percentage of forest area. The model structure includes calculations of the daily values of snowmelt excess and the transformation of these values into discharges at the outlet of the basin based on meteorological observations and appropriate distribution functions. Both calculations are made separately for open and forest areas. The parameters of the model were derived by optimization methods. The linear model based on the superposition principle is used to transform the discharges of a small river into total inflow into a large reservoir. The combined model was used to forecast for five days in advance daily mean inflows into the Gorky and Kuibyshev reservoirs (on the River Volga), using the observed and forecast discharges of the small rivers as input. 相似文献

Accurate benthic habitat maps are critical for resource management in coastal waters with competing uses. We used a 500 kHz
phase-measuring bathymetric sonar (PMBS) and 900 kHz side-scan sonar to acquire seafloor data in estuarine and shelf environments.
Grab samples and remotely operated vehicle video created geological and biological classifications for segmented maps produced
by a backscatter clustering program. PMBS improves regional map resolution (<1 m), reduces the need for direct sampling, extends
information on sediment–biological relationships to larger areas, and allows measurements of bedforms. Auto-segmentation was
successful in environments with highly contrasting acoustic signatures and meters-scale homogeneity. Patchier communities
are identifiable in PMBS data. Species preferences for sediment (i.e., tubeworm preference for sediment without shell hash)
allowed us to determine potential habitat without identifying individual organisms in acoustic data. PMBS with sufficient
ground-truthing offers an efficient way to map seafloor characteristics, which is critical in marine spatial planning efforts. 相似文献

Rapid weathering and erosion rates in mountainous tropical watersheds lead to highly variable soil and saprolite thicknesses which in turn impact nutrient fluxes and biological populations. In the Luquillo Mountains of Puerto Rico, a 5-m thick saprolite contains high microorganism densities at the surface and at depth overlying bedrock. We test the hypotheses that the organisms at depth are limited by the availability of two nutrients, P and Fe. Many tropical soils are P-limited, rather than N-limited, and dissolution of apatite is the dominant source of P. We document patterns of apatite weathering and of bioavailable Fe derived from the weathering of primary minerals hornblende and biotite in cores augered to 7.5 m on a ridgetop as compared to spheroidally weathering bedrock sampled in a nearby roadcut.Iron isotopic compositions of 0.5 N HCl extracts of soil and saprolite range from about δ56Fe = 0 to ? 0.1‰ throughout the saprolite except at the surface and at 5 m depth where δ56Fe = ? 0.26 to ? 0.64‰. The enrichment of light isotopes in HCl-extractable Fe in the soil and at the saprolite–bedrock interface is consistent with active Fe cycling and consistent with the locations of high cell densities and Fe(II)-oxidizing bacteria, identified previously. To evaluate the potential P-limitation of Fe-cycling bacteria in the profile, solid-state concentrations of P were measured as a function of depth in the soil, saprolite, and weathering bedrock. Weathering apatite crystals were examined in thin sections and an apatite dissolution rate of 6.8 × 10? 14 mol m? 2 s? 1 was calculated. While surface communities depend on recycled nutrients and atmospheric inputs, deep communities survive primarily on nutrients released by the weathering bedrock and thus are tightly coupled to processes related to saprolite formation including mineral weathering. While low available P may limit microbial activity within the middle saprolite, fluxes of P from apatite weathering should be sufficient to support robust growth of microorganisms in the deep saprolite. 相似文献
