This paper presents new photometric and spectrophotometric observations of the dark (leading) hemisphere of Saturn's satellite Iapetus. Spectrophotometry from 0.3–1.0 um (May 1979) shows the dark hemisphere to be very red, similar to a few asteroids and the Moon, but with no spectral features attributable to olivine or pyroxene. Near-infrared spectrophometry in the regions 1.4–2.5 um (May 1981) and 3.0–3.8 um (February 1981) reveals water ice absorption bands, probably resulting from the polar caps intruding onto the dark hemisphere. The reflectance of Iapetus is unlike that of carbonaceous chondrites or C-type asteroids and most closely resembles the reflectance (and low albedo) of carbonaceous (organic) residue from the Murchison C2 carbonaceous chondrite. The Murchison material has the same red slope and a probable spectral feature near 0.6 um seen in Iapetus data. Three hypotheses for the formation of the dark hemisphere are discussed in light of the observational data. The favored hypothesis is that debris from Phoebe or other unknown outer satellites of Saturn impacts the dark hemisphere of Iapetus as Poynting-Robertson drag causes the debris to spiral toward Saturn. The high-velocity impacts preferentially remove ice from the satellite's surface, causing enrichment of included carbonaceous material intrinsic to Iapetus. The reflectance of Phoebe itself is significantly different from that of Iapetus, suggesting that relatively little Phoebe debris lies on the dark hemisphere. There remains the possibility that the impacting debris originates from another body of composition similar to the Murchison residue and that this material is exposed on the surface of Iapetus. 相似文献

After a lapse of five years, the first solar events in which particles were emitted with sufficiently high energies to produce intensity enhancements in ground-based neutron monitors occurred on July 7, 1966, and January 28, 1967. Although the magnitude of the first of these increases was too small (<2%) to permit detailed analysis, the later event, which exceeded 18% at sea-level stations in the polar regions, displayed unusual characteristics. The January 28 event is anomalous in that either it represents the first observation of solar particles reaching the earth from the back side of the sun, or it is associated with a feeble flare (1-) in the unfavored eastern hemisphere of the visible disk. Coupling of the Community Land Model (CLM3) to the ICTP Regional Climate Model (RegCM3) substantially improves the simulation
of mean climate over West Africa relative to an older version of RegCM3 coupled to the Biosphere Atmosphere Transfer Scheme
(BATS). Two 10-year simulations (1992–2001) show that the seasonal timing and magnitude of mean monsoon precipitation more
closely match observations when the new land surface scheme is implemented. Specifically, RegCM3–CLM3 improves the timing
of the monsoon advance and retreat across the Guinean Coast, and reduces a positive precipitation bias in the Sahel and Northern
Africa. As a result, simulated temperatures are higher, thereby reducing the negative temperature bias found in the Guinean
Coast and Sahel in RegCM3–BATS. In the RegCM3–BATS simulation, warmer temperatures in northern latitudes and wetter soils
near the coast create excessively strong temperature and moist static energy gradients, which shifts the African Easterly
Jet further north than observed. In the RegCM3–CLM3 simulation, the migration and position of the African Easterly Jet more
closely match reanalysis winds. This improvement is triggered by drier soil conditions in the RegCM3–CLM3 simulation and an
increase in evapotranspiration per unit precipitation. These results indicate that atmosphere–land surface coupling has the
ability to impact regional-scale circulation and precipitation in regions exhibiting strong hydroclimatic gradients. 相似文献

Comparison of uncertainty sources for climate change impacts: flood frequency in England 总被引:6,自引:3,他引:3
This paper investigates the uncertainty in the impact of climate change on flood frequency in England, through the use of continuous simulation of river flows. Six different sources of uncertainty are discussed: future greenhouse gas emissions; Global Climate Model (GCM) structure; downscaling from GCMs (including Regional Climate Model structure); hydrological model structure; hydrological model parameters and the internal variability of the climate system (sampled by applying different GCM initial conditions). These sources of uncertainty are demonstrated (separately) for two example catchments in England, by propagation through to flood frequency impact. The results suggest that uncertainty from GCM structure is by far the largest source of uncertainty. However, this is due to the extremely large increases in winter rainfall predicted by one of the five GCMs used. Other sources of uncertainty become more significant if the results from this GCM are omitted, although uncertainty from sources relating to modelling of the future climate is generally still larger than that relating to emissions or hydrological modelling. It is also shown that understanding current and future natural variability is critical in assessing the importance of climate change impacts on hydrology. 相似文献

We investigate the properties of optically passive spirals and dusty red galaxies in the A901/2 cluster complex at redshift ∼0.17 using rest-frame near-ultraviolet–optical spectral energy distributions, 24-μm infrared data and Hubble Space Telescope morphologies from the STAGES data set. The cluster sample is based on COMBO-17 redshifts with an rms precision of σ cz ≈ 2000 km s−1 . We find that 'dusty red galaxies' and 'optically passive spirals' in A901/2 are largely the same phenomenon, and that they form stars at a substantial rate, which is only four times lower than that in blue spirals at fixed mass. This star formation is more obscured than in blue galaxies and its optical signatures are weak. They appear predominantly in the stellar mass range of log M * /M⊙ =[10, 11] where they constitute over half of the star-forming galaxies in the cluster; they are thus a vital ingredient for understanding the overall picture of star formation quenching in clusters. We find that the mean specific star formation rate (SFR) of star-forming galaxies in the cluster is clearly lower than in the field, in contrast to the specific SFR properties of blue galaxies alone, which appear similar in cluster and field. Such a rich red spiral population is best explained if quenching is a slow process and morphological transformation is delayed even more. At log M * /M⊙ < 10 , such galaxies are rare, suggesting that their quenching is fast and accompanied by morphological change. We note that edge-on spirals play a minor role; despite being dust reddened they form only a small fraction of spirals independent of environment. 相似文献

More on the narrowing of impact broadened radio recombination lines at high principal quantum number

Recently Alexander and Gulyaev have suggested that the apparent decrease in impact broadening of radio recombination lines
seen at high principal quantum number n may be a product of the data reduction process, possibly resulting from the presence of noise on the telescope spectra that
is not present on the calculated comparison spectra. This is an interesting proposal. However, there are serious problems
with their analysis that need to be pointed out. Perhaps the most important of these is the fact that for principal quantum
numbers below n=200, where the widths are not in question, their processed generated profile widths do not fit the widths of the processed
lines obtained at the telescope. After processing, the halfwidths of the generated and telescope profiles must agree below n=200 if we are to believe that the processed generated linewidths above n=200 are meaningful. Theirs do not. Furthermore, we find that after applying the linewidth reduction factors found by Alexander
and Gulyaev for their noise added profiles to our generated profiles to simulate their noise adding effect, the processed
widths we obtain still do not come close to explaining the narrowing seen in the telescope lines for n values in the range 200<n<250. It is concluded that what is needed to solve this mystery is a completely new approach using a different observing technique
instead of simply a further manipulation of the frequency-switched data. 相似文献

We have used HST/NICMOS to observe approximately 57% of the martian surface in 7 narrow band filters (0.97, 1.08, 1.13, 1.66, 1.90, 2.12, and 2.15 μm) during the 2003 opposition (Ls∼250°) and at a resolution of ∼12 km/pixel. Principal components analysis (PCA) of the dataset has identified regional variability on scales of hundreds of kilometers associated with differences in the near-infrared spectrum of Mars. Visualization of the data in principal component space has allowed us to identify spectral endmembers associated with the south polar cap, the classic bright terrains, northern Syrtis Major, southern Syrtis Major, Tyrrhena Terra, and Acidalia Planitia. The two Syrtis Major endmembers and the Tyrrhena Terra endmember differ in their absolute reflectivities but have the same spectral shape at wavelengths longer than 1.6 μm. The Acidalia endmember is distinct from the other dark terrain endmembers because it exhibits a strong negative near-IR spectral slope. Comparisons with spectral library measurements cannot provide unique constraints on the surface mineralogy for these sparsely-sampled spectral data. However, the observed spectral variations between Tyrrhena Terra and Syrtis Major are consistent with variations in iron- and sulfur-bearing minerals, and the relatively strong negative spectral slope in the spectrum of Acidalia is consistent with the presence of hydrated alteration products. Additional comparison with previous NICMOS observations taken in 1997 at Ls∼150° indicate that the average near-IR spectral slope of the Acidalia region is more negative during the late northern fall than during the mid northern summer. This may indicate seasonal variations in the presence of either adsorbed water or re-hydrated minerals in the regolith of Acidalia. 相似文献
