When a phenocryst and its lava matrix have been analysed for both major and trace elements, plots of partition coefficient (mineral/matrix) against ionic radius give a family of sub-parallel curves, one univalent, one divalent, etc. Onuma et al. (1968) demonstrated this with two analyses and concluded, from the shape of these curves, that trace element partition between phenocryst and groundmass is determined primarily by crystal structure of the phenocryst. In this study, over 50 such analyses, taken from the literature, have been plotted on modified Onuma diagrams, in order to analyse the constant and variable factors in the curves. It is demonstrated that these curves can provide important additional information in trace element studies by revealing, for example, the site or sites in a mineral which a given element is occupying, the valency state of the element and even, in some cases, the proportion of different valency states present. 相似文献

Studies of transnational communities and transnational labour migration have focused almost exclusively on the movement of low-skilled and unskilled workers across international boundaries. While these groups may be numerically dominant, it must be recognised that there are increasing numbers of managers and professionals engaged in work-related migration in association with the intensification of economic globalisation processes. Work which has been conducted on highly skilled migrants has largely been limited to examinations of intra-firm mobility and the workspace. This approach fails to consider the ways in which the migrants' experiences are embedded in the social, economic and political practices of the host country, but also in a specific household context. It is unsurprising, therefore, that the gendered dimensions of the life of these migrants and their accompanying family members has been somewhat under-researched.Flows of expatriates can lead to the constitution of both ‘communities of transnationals', as particular cities become foci of the activities of the ‘transnational capitalist class', as well as ‘transnational communities' which involve regular and sustained contact between individuals across national boundaries. In this paper we examine these social formations using two groups of migrants––British and Singaporean migrants to China (both mainland China and the Hong Kong SAR). We focus on the gender characteristics of these groupings, but also the gender division of labour in the creation and maintenance of these ‘communities'. The geochemistry of Ba, Ra, Th, and U and the potential of using 226Ra/Ba ratios as an alternative dating method are explored in modern and Holocene marine mollusc shells. Five modern shells of the Antarctic scallop Adamussium colbecki collected from the present day beach and six radiocarbon dated specimens from Holocene beach terraces of the Ross Sea region (Antarctic) between 700 and 6100 calibrated yr BP old have been analysed by mass spectrometry. In clean shells 226Ra concentrations and 226Ra/Ba ratios show a clear decrease with increasing age, suggesting the possibility of 226Ra dating. Limiting factors for such dating are Ba and 226Ra present in surface contaminants, and ingrowth of 226Ra from U present within the shell. Surface contamination is difficult to clean off entirely, but moderate levels of residual contamination can be corrected using 232Th. Sub-samples from the same shell with different proportions of contamination form a mixing line in a 226Ra/Ba-232Th/Ba graph, and the 226Ra/Ba of the pure shell can be derived from the intercept on the 226Ra/Ba axis. Contaminant corrected 226Ra/Ba ratios of late-Holocene 14C-dated samples fall close to that expected from simple 226Ra excess decay from seawater 226Ra/Ba values. 226Ra ingrowth from U incorporated into the shell during the lifetime of the mollusc can be corrected for. However, the unknown timing of post mortem U uptake into the shell makes a correction for 226Ra ingrowth from secondary U difficult to achieve. In the A. colbecki shells, 226Ra ingrowth from such secondary U becomes significant only when ages exceed ∼2500 yr. In younger shells, 226Ra/Ba ratios corrected for surface contamination provide chronological information. If evidence for a constant oceanic relationship between 226Ra and Ba in the ocean can be confirmed for that time scale, the 226Ra/Ba chronometer may enable the reconstruction of variability in sea surface 14C reservoir ages from mollusc shells and allow its use as a paleoceanographic tracer. 相似文献

Tree rings representing the period from the mid-1950s up to 2001 were studied as part of an investigation of anthropogenic radionuclide input to terrestrial systems. A live specimen of Pinus sylvestris from the east coast of Ireland was felled, sampled and analysed for comparison with a similar tree felled close to the Atlantic seaboard on the west coast of Ireland. Data for the tree ring sequences were examined relative to the radionuclide content of peat profiles sampled in close proximity to the locations of the studied Pine trees.The data indicate that 14C concentrations in tree ring sequences from the east and west coasts of Ireland are virtually identical. The sequences show maximum 14C concentrations (185 and 189 pMC at east and west coast sites, respectively) that correspond closely with published data for atmospheric levels during the height of the nuclear weapons test period (1945-1980). The tree ring count for the specimen from the east coast places the 14C peak precisely at 1964, the year following the known peak in atmospheric concentrations due to above ground testing of nuclear weapons. However, 14C data show that simple ring counting of the west coast tree did not provide an accurate chronology. The data demonstrate the importance of applying dendrodating techniques using replicated site chronologies, and the value of the 14C bomb fallout curve for the construction of recent chronologies. Data show no evidence of enhanced uptake at the east coast that might suggest incorporation of output from the Sellafield nuclear complex or from the release of radioactivity resulting from an accidental fire at the plant in 1957. 相似文献

A dockside experiment was designed at the mouth of the Pascagoula River in Pascagoula, Mississippi, to evaluate corrosion in welded Cu/Ni piping systems. Coral reefs within the Florida Keys are disappearing at an alarming rate. Coral cover in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary declined by 38% from 1996 to 2000. In 2000, populations of Montastraea annularis at four sites near Molasses Reef within the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary and one reef within Biscayne National Park were sampled on a quarterly basis. Anecdotal observations showed corals at Alina's Reef in Biscayne National Park appeared healthy in March, but experienced an acute loss of coral cover by August. Cellular Diagnostic analysis indicated that Alina's Reef corals were in distress: they had been afflicted with a severe oxidative damaging and protein-denaturing stress that affected both the corals and their symbiotic zooxanthellae. This condition was associated with a significant xenobiotic detoxification response in both species, reflecting probable chemical contaminant exposure. These results demonstrate that applying a Cellular Diagnostic approach can be effective in helping to identify stress and its underlying causes, providing diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers of coral health. 相似文献

The ampeliscid amphipod community in the Chirikov Basin of the northern Bering Sea was a focus of study during the 1980s because they were a major food for the Eastern North Pacific (ENP) population of gray whales Eschrichtius robustus. Information from the 1980s benthic investigations, published accounts of ENP gray whale population trends and the occurrence in 1999–2000 of an unusual number of gray whale mortalities prompted concern that the whale population may have exceeded the carrying capacity of its food base. Therefore, during two cruises per year between June and September, 2002 and 2003, we resampled the 20 stations occupied during the 1980s, to determine if there had been any significant changes in ampeliscid abundance and biomass. During 2002–2003, average ampeliscid dry weight biomass was about 28±10 g m−2 (95% confidence interval), a decline of nearly 50% from maximum values in the 1980s. Amphipod length measurements indicated that the declines were due mainly to the absence of the larger animals (20–30 mm length). Two hypotheses were considered regarding the amphipod declines: gray whale predation and climate. Ampeliscid production (105 kcal m−2 yr−1) and gray whale energy requirements (1.6×108 kcal individual−1 yr−1) indicated that as little as 3–6% of the current estimate of the ENP gray whale population could remove 10–20% of the annual ampeliscid production from the study site in 2002–2003, a finding consistent with the hypothesis that top-down control by foraging whales was the primary cause of the observed declines. A 10-yr time series of temperature near the bottom in the Bering Strait and northward transport did not reveal a consistent trend between 1990 and 2001, suggesting that climate influences were not the major cause of the observed declines. Arctic ampeliscids have slow growth rates and long generation times; therefore the ampeliscid community may require decades to recover to densities observed in the 1980s. Predicted warming trends in the northern Bering Sea could impact ampeliscid recovery by lowering primary production or altering the community composition of the benthos. 相似文献

In this article, I place Ahmed's notion of the feminist killjoy into conversation with feminist geography literature to explore possibilities and praxis in research endeavoring to illuminate uneven power relations and the moral orders that frame them. According to Ahmed, a feminist killjoy is one who exposes sexism, heterosexism, and racism, only to be criticized for disrupting happiness and social consent. Drawing on fieldwork on urban politics and development, I explore the implications—both promise and peril—of adopting feminist killjoy research subjectivities, emphasizing the important role of affect. I suggest that when feminist researchers direct killjoy research not just at mainstream institutions but also at progressive endeavors, they risk being construed as double killjoys who disrupt supposed joy and solidarity within progressive politics. 相似文献

This article summarizes research completed to assess the risk of lightning-related injuries and fatalities in Canada. Although
lightning mortality has declined significantly over the past century, it remains a common meteorological hazard that regularly
kills and injures. Based on an analysis of media reports, vital statistics, hospital admission and emergency room visit records,
and fire loss data, the authors estimate that on average about 9–10 lightning-related deaths and 92–164 injuries occur each
year in Canada. The distribution of casualties reflects current provincial population and cloud-to-ground lightning densities.
Consistent with similar studies in other developed nations, most lightning-related fatalities and injuries in Canada occur
during the June-August summer season, coincident with peak lightning, and during the Thursday-Saturday period, most likely
related to higher rates of participation in outdoor activities. The majority of victims are male, less than 46 years old,
and engaged in outdoor recreational activities when injured or killed in a lightning incident. Media reports used in the study
were found to underestimate both lightning mortality (36%) and morbidity (20–600%).
