Purging influence on soil‐gas concentrations for volatile organic compounds (VOCs), as affected by sampling tube inner diameter and sampling depth (i.e., system volume) for temporary probes in fine‐grained soils, was evaluated at three different field sites. A macro‐purge sampling system consisted of a standard, hollow, 3.2‐cm outer diameter (OD) drive probe with a retractable sampling point attached to an appropriate length of 0.48‐cm inner diameter (ID) Teflon® tubing. The macro‐purge sampling system had a purge system volume of 24.5 mL at a 1‐m depth. In contrast, the micro‐purge sampling systems were slightly different between the field sites and consisted of a 1.27‐cm OD drive rod with a 0.10‐cm ID stainless steel tube or a 3.2‐cm OD drive rod with a 0.0254‐cm inner diameter stainless steel tubing resulting in purge system volumes of 1.2 and 7.05 mL at 1‐m depths, respectively. At each site and location within the site, with a few exceptions, the same contaminants were identified in the same relative order of abundances indicating the sampling of the same general soil atmosphere. However, marked differences in VOC concentrations were identified between the sampling systems, with micro‐purge samples having up to 27 times greater concentrations than their corresponding macro‐purge samples. The higher concentrations are the result of a minimal disturbance of the ambient soil atmosphere during purging. The minimal soil‐gas atmospheric disturbance of the micro‐purge sampling system allowed for the collection of a sample that is more representative of the soil atmosphere surrounding the sampling point. That is, a sample that does not contain an atmosphere that has migrated from distance through the geologic material or from the surface in response to the vacuum induced during purging soil‐gas concentrations. It is thus recommended that when soil‐gas sampling is conducted using temporary probes in fine‐grained soils, the sampling system use the smallest practical ID soil‐gas tubing and minimize purge volume to obtain the soil‐gas sample with minimal risk of leakage so that proper decisions, based on more representative soil‐gas concentrations, about the site can be made. 相似文献

Observations of non-Fickian transport in sandbox experiments [Levy M, Berkowitz B. Measurement and analysis of non-Fickian dispersion in heterogeneous porous media. J Contam Hydrol 2003;64:203–26] were analyzed previously using a power law tail ψ(t) ∼ t−1−β with 0 < β < 2 for the spectrum of transition times comprising a tracer plume migration. For each sandbox medium a choice of β resulted in an excellent fit to the breakthrough curve (BTC) data, and the value of β decreased slowly with increasing flow velocity. Here, the data are reanalyzed with the full spectrum of ψ(t) gleaned from analytical calculations [Cortis A, Chen Y, Scher H, Berkowitz B. We represent the main features of the full spectrum of transition times with a truncated power law (TPL), ψ(t) ∼ (t1 + t)−1−βexp(−t/t2), where t1 and t2 are the limits of the power law spectrum. An excellent fit to the entire BTC data set, including the changes in flow velocity, for each sandbox medium is obtained with a single set of values of t1, β, t2. The influence of the cutoff time t2 is apparent even in the regime t < t2. Significantly, we demonstrate that the previous apparent velocity dependence of β is a result of choosing a pure power law tail for ψ(t). The key is the change in the log–log slope of the TPL form of ψ(t) with a shifting observational time window caused by the change in the mean velocity. Hence, the use of the full spectrum of ψ(t) is not only necessary for the transition to Fickian behavior, but also to account for the dynamics of these laboratory observations of non-Fickian transport. 相似文献

The Solar Occultation For Ice Experiment (SOFIE) was launched onboard the Aeronomy of Ice in the Mesosphere (AIM) satellite on 25 April 2007, and began science observations on 14 May 2007. SOFIE conducts solar occultation measurements in 16 spectral bands that are used to retrieve vertical profiles of temperature, O3, H2O, CO2, CH4, NO, and polar mesospheric cloud (PMC) extinction at wavelengths from 0.330 to 5.006 μm. SOFIE performs 15 sunset measurements at latitudes from 65° to 85°S and 15 sunrise measurements from 65° to 85°N each day. A suite of 23 basaltic to dacitic lavas erupted over the last 350 kyr from the Mount Adams volcanic field has been analyzed for U–Th isotope compositions to evaluate the roles of mantle versus crustal components during magma genesis. All of the lavas have (230Th/238U) > 1 and span a large range in (230Th/232Th) ratios, and most basalts have higher (230Th/232Th) ratios than andesites and dacites. Several of the lavas contain antecrysts (crystals of pre-existing material), yet internal U–Th mineral isochrons from six of seven lavas are indistinguishable from their eruption ages. This indicates a relatively brief period of time between crystal growth and eruption for most of the phenocrysts (olivine, clinopyroxene, plagioclase, magnetite) prior to eruption. One isochron gave a crystallization age that is ~ 20–25 ka older than its corresponding eruptive age, and is interpreted to reflect mixing of older and juvenile crystals or a protracted period of magma storage in the crust. Much of the eruptive volume since 350 ka consists of lavas that have small to moderate 230Th excesses (2–16%), which are likely inherited from melting of a garnet-bearing intraplate (“OIB-like”) mantle source. Following melt generation and subsequent migration through the upper mantle, most Mt. Adams magmas interacted with young, mafic lower crust, as indicated by 187Os/188Os ratios that are substantially more radiogenic than the mantle or those expected via mixing of subducted material and the mantle wedge. Moreover, Os–Th isotope variations suggest that unusually large 230Th excesses (25–48%) and high 187Os/188Os ratios in some peripheral lavas reflect assimilation of small degree partial melts of pre-Quaternary basement that had residual garnet or Al-rich clinopyroxene. Despite the isotopic evidence for lower crustal assimilation, these processes are not generally recorded in the erupted phenocrysts, indicating that the crystal record of the deep-level ‘cryptic’ processes has been decoupled from shallow-level crystallization. 相似文献

Results of a passive microtremor survey at an oil and gas field in Voitsdorf, Austria, are presented. The survey consists in six parallel profiles approximately 9 km long over two hydrocarbon reservoirs. For each profile the seismic wavefield was recorded synchronously at 11 in-line stations. The measurements were conducted with broadband seismometers and lasted, for each profile, at least 12 hours overnight. Data interpretation is based on a comprehensive data set and on the analysis of four different spectral attributes. These attributes quantify the characteristic features of the wavefield's Fourier spectra in the low-frequency range (<10Hz). One attribute quantifies the spectral energy in the vertical wavefield component, another attribute quantifies the maxima in vertical-to-horizontal spectral ratios and two attributes describe the frequency shifts of peaks within the spectra of vertical and horizontal wavefield components. Due to temporal variations of the signals we combine the long-term measurements (several hours of continuous records) of multiple profiles. This procedure considerably enhances the consistency of each spectral attribute and makes them suitable to quantify lateral variations of the wavefield. The results show that using a combination of several attributes significantly increases the reliability of detecting anomalies in the microtremor wavefield that are presumably caused by hydrocarbon reservoirs. A numerical study of two-dimensional seismic wave propagation is applied to investigate the peak frequency shift attributes. The results of the study indicate that the attributes may contain information on the depth of hydrocarbon reservoirs, assuming that the reservoir acts as a (secondary) source of low-frequency seismic waves. 相似文献

Over a 52-month period beginning in May 2004 and concluding in August 2008, and coinciding with the period over which TBT was banned as a ship anti-foulant globally, a population of the dogwhelk, Nucella lapillus, was studied for changes in population size and structure, and reproduction. During the study period, the size of the population of N. lapillus on the Mewsbrook Groyne at Littlehampton on the southeastern coast of England grew from ∼25 individuals to >500, i.e., a 20-fold increase. Similarly, population structure normalised to reveal a maximum age of up to ∼3 years. The numbers of egg capsules produced by the N. lapillus population also grew over the study, again by a factor of 20, and the length of the breeding season increased from 7 months in 2004-2005 and 2005-2006 to 11 months in 2006-2007 and 2007-2008. Such changes were reflected in the incidence of imposex from Vas Deferens Index Stages 3 and 4 in 2003 to zero commencing in 2008 and continuing into 2009.Due to a lack of confirmatory chemical data, the changes in population size, structure and reproduction herein reported upon for N. lapillus cannot be correlated positively with changes in ambient TBT levels, but they can and are correlated with freedom from imposex. This is the first time such a dramatic recovery from imposex, following the banning of TBT, has been documented. 相似文献

Decays of radionuclides throughout the earth’s interior produce geothermal heat, but also are a source of antineutrinos; these
geoneutrinos are now becoming observable in experiments such as KamLAND. The (angle-integrated) geoneutrino flux has been
shown to provide a unique probe of geothermal heating due to decays, and an integral constraint on the distribution of radionuclides
in the earth. In this paper, we calculate the angular distribution of geoneutrinos, which opens a window on the differential radial distribution of terrestrial radionuclides. We develop the general formalism for the neutrino angular distribution.
We also present the inverse transformation which recovers the terrestrial radioisotope distribution given a measurement of
the neutrino angular distribution. Thus, geoneutrinos not only allow a means to image the earth’s interior, but offer a direct
measure of the radioactive earth, both revealing the earth’s inner structure as probed by radionuclides, and allowing a complete
determination of the radioactive heat generation as a function of radius. Turning to specific models, we emphasize the very
useful approximation in which the earth is modeled as a series of shells of uniform density. Using this multishell approximation,
we present the geoneutrino angular distribution for the favored earth model which has been used to calculate the geoneutrino
flux. In this model the neutrino generation is dominated by decays of potassium, uranium, and thorium in the earth’s mantle
and crust; this leads to a very “peripheral” angular distribution, in which 2/3 of the neutrinos come from angles θ ≳ 60°
away from the nadir. We note that a measurement of the neutrino intensity in peripheral directions leads to a strong lower
limit to the central intensity. We briefly discuss the challenges facing experiments to measure the geoneutrino angular distribution.
Currently available techniques using inverse beta decay of protons require a (for now) unfeasibly large number of events to
recover with confidence the forward scattering signal from the background of subsequent elastic scatterings. Nevertheless,
it is our hope that future large experiments, and/or more sensitive techniques, can resolve an image of the earth’s radioactive

The character of porcelain wares made by Nicholas Crisp early and late in his career was assessed using microchemical and petrographic data for sherds excavated from the sites of the factories he operated at Vauxhall and Bovey Tracey. The results indicate that, over time, Crisp increasingly made use of diverse types of pastes as he struggled to produce a commercially viable line of porcelain. Based on the analysis of a limited number of samples, he appears to have largely restricted himself at Vauxhall to using soapstone (Mg‐rich)‐ and flint‐glass (Pb‐rich) frit‐bearing pastes that varied in the amount of calcite they contained. He also experimented with Mg+Pb‐rich pastes at Bovey Tracey, but included a novel ingredient (barite) and varied the proportion of other minor constituents (e.g., bone ash), apparently in an effort to resolve some of the firing problems that plagued him at Vauxhall. In addition, Crisp appears to have produced bone ash (phosphatic) porcelain at Bovey Tracey, and, in collaboration with William Cookworthy, the proprietor of the Plymouth factory, fired a range of true porcelain (Si+Al‐rich) pastes. Bulk compositional data indicate that Crisp's diopside‐bearing Mg+Pb‐rich wares were derived from pastes containing talc and calcite rather than dolomite. The mineralogy of these and some contemporary magnesian/plombian porcelains are interpreted using the SiO2‐CaO‐MgO phase diagram. This diagram shows that these wares can form and preserve diopside (Ca‐Mg silicate) given suitable bulk CaO contents and kiln‐firing temperatures. Phosphatic sherds from Bovey Tracey are compositionally distinct (lower SiO2 and higher Al2O3 and bone‐ash components) from a single bone‐ash sample from Vauxhall, indicating that Crisp experimented with novel bone‐ash pastes, and was not positively influenced by the Vauxhall phosphatic recipe, if indeed one existed. True porcelains from Bovey Tracey have more extreme SiO2/Al2O3 ratios (= 2.0 [two sherds]; 4.5 [one sherd]) than their Plymouth/Bristol counterparts (SiO2/Al2O3 = 2.3–3.0). Collectively, the analytical data underscore the experimental—and ultimately unsuccessful—character of the diverse wares produced by Nicholas Crisp. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. 相似文献
