Historic changes in water-use management in the Florida Everglades have caused the quantity of freshwater inflow to Florida Bay to decline by approximately 60% while altering its timing and spatial distribution. Two consequences have been (1) increased salinity throughout the bay, including occurrences of hypersalinity, coupled with a decrease in salinity variability, and (2) change in benthic habitat structure. Restoration goals have been proposed to return the salinity climates (salinity and its variability) of Florida Bay to more estuarine conditions through changes in upstream water management, thereby returning seagrass species cover to a more historic state. To assess the potential for meeting those goals, we used two modeling approaches and long-term monitoring data. First, we applied the hydrological mass balance model FATHOM to predict salinity climate changes in sub-basins throughout the bay in response to a broad range of freshwater inflow from the Everglades. Second, because seagrass species exhibit different sensitivities to salinity climates, we used the FATHOM-modeled salinity climates as input to a statistical discriminant function model that associates eight seagrass community types with water quality variables including salinity, salinity variability, total organic carbon, total phosphorus, nitrate, and ammonium, as well as sediment depth and light reaching the benthos. Salinity climates in the western sub-basins bordering the Gulf of Mexico were insensitive to even the largest (5-fold) modeled increases in freshwater inflow. However, the north, northeastern, and eastern sub-basins were highly sensitive to freshwater inflow and responded to comparatively small increases with decreased salinity and increased salinity variability. The discriminant function model predicted increased occurrences of Halodule wrightii communities and decreased occurrences of Thalassia testudinum communities in response to the more estuarine salinity climates. The shift in community composition represents a return to the historically observed state and suggests that restoration goals for Florida Bay can be achieved through restoration of freshwater inflow from the Everglades.  相似文献

Hypoxic conditions in the coastal waters off Texas (USA) were observed since the late 1970s, but little is known about the causes of stratification that contribute to hypoxia formation. Typically, this hypoxia is attributed to downcoast (southwestward) advection of waters from the Mississippi–Atchafalaya River system. Here, we present evidence for a hypoxic event on the inner shelf of Texas coincident with the presence of freshwater linked to high flow of the Brazos River in Texas. These conclusions are based on hydrographic observations and isotopic measurements of waters on the inner shelf near the Brazos River mouth. These data characterize the development, breakdown, and dispersal of a hypoxic event lasting from June through September 2007 off the Texas coast. Oxygen isotope compositions of shelf water indicate that (1) discharge from the Brazos River was the principal source of freshwater and water column stratification during the 2007 event, and (2) during low Brazos River discharge in 2008, freshwater on the Texas shelf was derived mainly from the Mississippi–Atchafalaya River System. Based on these findings, we conclude that the Mississippi–Atchafalaya River System is not the sole cause of hypoxia in the northern Gulf of Mexico; however, more data are needed to determine the relative influence of the Texas versus Mississippi rivers during normal and low flow conditions of Texas rivers.  相似文献

The results of a diffusive radiation transport experiment in a simple geometry are presented. The experiment depends primarily on two variables, the target density and the temperature drive, which are characterized well. The experiment is designed to verify and validate radiation transport in codes. The codes can then be used to model astrophysical systems. We report observations of the ro-vibronic a1Δ→X3Σ transition of SO at 1.707 μm on Io. These data were taken while Io was eclipsed by Jupiter, on four nights between July 2000 and March 2003. We analyze these results in conjunction with a previously published night to investigate the temporal behavior of these emissions. The observations were all conducted using the near-infrared spectrometer NIRSPEC on the W.M. Keck II telescope. The integrated emitted intensity for this band varies from 0.8×1027 to 2.4×1027 photons/s, with a possible link to variations in Loki's infrared brightness. The band-shapes imply rotational temperatures of 550-1000 K for the emitting gas, lending further evidence to a volcanic origin for sulfur monoxide. An attempt to detect the B1Σ→X3Σ transition of SO at 0.97 μm was unsuccessful; simultaneous detection with the 1.707 μm band would permit determination of the SO column abundance.  相似文献

Simulation results are presented by using an h-adaptive mass consistent finite element method (FEM) coupled with a Lagrangian particle transport technique (LPT) for dispersion associated with hazardous atmospheric releases. A three-dimensional wind field is first constructed from the adaptive FEM model. Lagrangian particles that define the contaminant dispersion are then produced with the LPT scheme, employing a random walk/stochastic approach. The application of FEM permits flow patterns with irregular geometries to be easily simulated, while the LPT permits contaminant particle dispersion patterns to be quickly depicted. The hybrid model is fast, runs on PCs, and appears well suited for emergency response dispersion predictions and assessment.  相似文献

Lake sediment, glacier extent and tree rings were used to reconstruct Holocene climate changes from Goat Lake at 550 m asl in the Kenai Mountains, south‐central Alaska. Radiocarbon‐dated sediment cores taken at 55 m water depth show glacial‐lacustrine conditions until about 9500 cal. yr BP, followed by organic‐rich sedimentation with an overall increasing trend in organic matter and biogenic silica content leading up to the Little Ice Age (LIA). Through most of the Holocene, the northern outlet of the Harding Icefield remained below the drainage divide that currently separates it from Goat Lake. A sharp transition from gyttja to inorganic mud about AD 1660 signifies the reappearance of glacier meltwater into Goat Lake during the LIA, marking the maximum Holocene (postglacial) extent. Meltwater continued to discharge into the lake until about AD 1900. A 207 yr tree‐ring series from 25 mountain hemlocks growing in the Goat Lake watershed correlates with other regional tree‐ring series that indicate an average summer temperature reduction of about 1°C during the 19th century compared with the early–mid 20th century. Cirque glaciers around Goat Lake reached their maximum LIA extent in the late 19th century. Assuming that glacier equilibrium‐line altitudes (ELA) are controlled solely by summer temperature, then the cooling of 1°C combined with the local environmental lapse rate would indicate an ELA lowering of 170 m. In contrast, reconstructed ELAs of 12 cirque glaciers near Goat Lake average only 34 ± 18 m lower during the LIA. The restricted ELA lowering can be explained by a reduction in accumulation‐season precipitation caused by a weakening of the Aleutian low‐pressure system during the late LIA. The 18 papers in this Special Issue of the Journal of Paleolimnology report new records of Holocene environmental and climate change from Arctic lake sediment. At least 15 distinct physical, chemical, and biological properties were analyzed at lakes located across the North American Arctic and subarctic, and northwestern Europe. The studies are notable for their multi-proxy approach (eight present data for at least five different proxies), and for the high quality of their geochronological control. Three of the studies analyzed sediment from more than one lake to test the influence of contrasting physiographic settings on the response of proxies to the same climate forcing. The sedimentary sequences analyzed in seven studies extend beyond 11.5?cal?ka, providing evidence for pronounced climate shifts that took place during the late-glacial period. Two-thirds extend beyond 8?cal?ka; many of these records were interpreted in terms of the shift in temperature and moisture that occurred during the transition from the warm early to middle Holocene to the cooler late Holocene. These records contribute to the growing network of sites that is needed to reconstruct the spatial pattern of this pronounced paleoclimate transition, and to address how ocean-atmospheric circulation changed with the mean?state of climate.  相似文献

We use a radiative-conductive-convective model to assess the height of Pluto’s troposphere, as well as surface pressure and surface radius, from stellar occultation data from the years 1988, 2002, and 2006. The height of the troposphere, if it exists, is less than 1 km for all years analyzed. Pluto has at most a planetary boundary layer and not a troposphere. As in previous analyses of Pluto occultation light curves, we find that the surface pressure is increasing with time, assuming that latitude and longitude variations in Pluto’s atmosphere are negligible. The surface pressure is found to be slightly higher ( μbar in 1988,  μbar in 2002, and 18.5 ± 4.7 μbar in 2006) than in our previous analyses with the troposphere excluded. The surface radius is determined to be . Comparison of the minimum reduced chi-squared values between the best-fit radiative-conductive-convective (i.e., troposphere-included) model and best-fit radiative-conductive (i.e., troposphere-excluded) shows that the troposphere-included model is only a slightly better fit to the data for all 3 years. Uncertainties in the small-scale physical processes of Pluto’s lower atmosphere and consequently the functional form of the model troposphere lend more confidence to the troposphere-excluded results.  相似文献

The Richtersveld area, bounded by 16° and 18° E and 28° and 29° S, has been mapped geochemically using stream sediment samples collected from first-order streams on a one-kilometre grid. The samples have been analysed for 20 elements and geochemical maps on a scale of 1:250,000 have been prepared.The basement consists of the Orange River Group which has been intruded by the Vioolsdrift Suite between 1700 and 1900 Ma. Intrusive into the Vioolsdrift Suite is the Richtersveld Suite, consisting of alkaline granite, syenite and diorite, which intruded at 970 Ma.The basement and the Richtersveld Complex are overlain by the younger Gariep Complex and in the south the Vioolsdrift Suite is overlain by the still younger Nama basin. The last intrusive event was the emplacement of three granitic plutons at 550 Ma.Geochemical maps for Rb and Y are used to characterize the geochemistry of the basement rocks. These maps show that the northern portion of the Vioolsdrift Suite is granodioritic whereas the southern portion is granitic. The boundary between the two granitic terrains is delineated.The distribution of Rb in the sandstone of the Gariep Complex reflects the Rb variation in the Vioolsdrift Suite and the Richtersveld Complex from which it was derived. The Rb in the sandstone occurs in feldspar thus demonstrating that mechanical weathering dominated during the its formation. The distribution of Y confirms both the proposed source areas and weathering conditions. Yttrium occurs in placer deposits in the sandstones of the Gariep Complex.The deep water facies of the Gariep Complex reflects the provenance areas vaguely, but due to homogenization in the basin the distribution of Y is more homogeneous in the shale. The effect of chemical traps such as dolomitic limestone is, however, apparent.The sporadic high concentration levels of Rb and Y in the sandstone of the Nama basin indicate that the granitic portion of the Vioolsdrift batholith was the source area, that mechanical weathering dominated and that placer deposits formed during the deposition of the fluvial sandstones. The dolomitic limestones, however, show evidence of the chemical fractionation of Y, indicating that chemical leaching and concentration took place during this phase.Elements such as Sn, W, Be, B, Th, Nb and Ta, all of which occur in the southern Vioolsdrift batholith, could have concentrated as placers in the Gariep and Nama sandstones. Elements such as U, Y, P, and Cu, of which substantial deposits are known, did not concentrate in the sandstones, but formed accumulations in the limestone and carbonaceous limestone of the younger sediments. Geochemical maps for Y, P and U show examples of hitherto unknown metallogenic provinces in the deep water sediments.Geochemical maps for Ti, Zr and P can be used to define the boundaries and relative concentration of diamonds within individual deposits and to identify new exploration targets.The pegmatite metallogenic province is divided into a northern P-enriched province containing accumulations of Y, Zr, Th, U and rare-earths, and a southern Nb-enriched province. The latter contains several Ta- and Be-producing pegmatites. The extension of these two pegmatitic provinces, which are also associated with the widespread W-mineralization, to the west of the Nama basin is also suggested.  相似文献

A model is presented for the photochemistry of PH3 in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere of Saturn that includes the effects of coupling with NH3 and hydrocarbon photochemistry, specifically the C2H2 catalyzed photodissociation of CH4. PH3 is rapidly depleted with altitude (scale height ~35 km) in the upper troposphere when K~104cm2sec?1; an upper limit for K at the tropopause is estimated at ~105cm2sec?1. If there is no gas phase P2H4 because of sublimation, P2 and P4 formation is unlikely unless the rate of the spin-forbidden recombination reaction PH + H2 + M → PH3 + M is exceedingly slow. An upper limit P4 column density of ~2×1015cm?2 is estimated in the limit of no recombination. If sublimation does not remove all gas phase P2H4, P2 and P4 may be produced in potentially larger quantities, although they would be restricted almost entirely to the lowest levels of our model, where T?100°K. Potentially observable amounts of the organophosphorus compounds CH3P2H2 and HCP are predicted, with column densities of >1017 cm?2 and production rates of ~2×108cm?2sec?1. The possible importance of electronically excited states of PHx and additional PH3/hydrocarbon photochemical coupling paths are also considered.  相似文献
