A model is presented for the photochemistry of PH3 in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere of Saturn that includes the effects of coupling with NH3 and hydrocarbon photochemistry, specifically the C2H2 catalyzed photodissociation of CH4. PH3 is rapidly depleted with altitude (scale height ~35 km) in the upper troposphere when K~104cm2sec?1; an upper limit for K at the tropopause is estimated at ~105cm2sec?1. If there is no gas phase P2H4 because of sublimation, P2 and P4 formation is unlikely unless the rate of the spin-forbidden recombination reaction PH + H2 + M → PH3 + M is exceedingly slow. An upper limit P4 column density of ~2×1015cm?2 is estimated in the limit of no recombination. If sublimation does not remove all gas phase P2H4, P2 and P4 may be produced in potentially larger quantities, although they would be restricted almost entirely to the lowest levels of our model, where T?100°K. Potentially observable amounts of the organophosphorus compounds CH3P2H2 and HCP are predicted, with column densities of >1017 cm?2 and production rates of ~2×108cm?2sec?1. The possible importance of electronically excited states of PHx and additional PH3/hydrocarbon photochemical coupling paths are also considered.  相似文献

The Io plasma torus, composed of mostly heavy ions of oxygen and sulfur, is sustained by an Iogenic mass loading rate of ∼1030 amu s−1 = 1.6 × 1028 SO2 s−1 or approximately 103 kg s−1(A.L. Broadfoot et al., 1979, Science 204, 979-982). We argue on the basis of available power sources, reanalysis of F. Bagenal (1997, Geophys. Res. Lett. 24, 2111-2114), HST UV remote sensing, and detailed model calculations that at most 20% of this mass leaves Io in the form of ions, i.e., ≤3 × 1027 × (ne,0/3600 cm−3) ions s−1, where ne,0 is the average torus electron density. For the Galileo spacecraft Io pass in December 1995, the ion mass loading rate was ≤3 × 1027 ions s−1, whereas for the Voyager epoch with lower ne,0 (=2000 cm−3), this rate would be ≤1.7 × 1027 ions s−1, consistent with the D.E. Shemansky (1980, Astrophys. J. 242, 1266-1277) mass loading limit of ≤1 × 1027 ions s−1. We investigate the processes that control Io’s large scale electrodynamic interaction and find that the elastic collision rate exceeds the ionization/pickup rate by at least a factor of 5 for all atmospheric column densities considered (1016-1021 m−2) and by a factor of ∼100 for the most realistic column density. Consequently, elastic collisions are mostly responsible for Io’s high conductances and thus generate Io’s large scale electrodynamic interaction such as the generation of Io’s electric current system and the slowing of the plasma flow. The electrodynamic part of Io’s interaction is thus best described as an ionosphere-like interaction rather than a comet-like interaction. An analytic expression for total electron impact rates is derived for Io’s atmosphere, which is independent of any particular model for the 3D interaction of torus electrons with its atmosphere.  相似文献

Fluid inclusions in quartz grains from five samples of high-grade rocks (two paragneisses, an amphibolite, a mafic gneiss and a tonalite dike) from the 2.7 Ga Kapuskasing structural zone (KSZ), Ontario, were examined with petrographic, microthermometric and laser Raman techniques. Three types of fluid inclusions were observed: CO2-rich, H2O-rich and mixed CO2-H2O. CO2-rich fluid inclusions are pseudosecondary or secondary in nature and are generally pure CO2; a few contain varying amounts of CH4·H2O-rich fluid inclusions are secondary in nature, contain variable amounts of dissolved salts, and generally contain daughter crystals. Mixed CO2-H2O fluid inclusions occur where trails of H2O-rich inclusions intersect trails of CO2-rich inclusions. Isochores for high density (p=1.03 g/cm3) pseudosecondary, pure CO2 inclusions intersect the lower pressure portion of the estimated P-T field for high-grade metamorphism, implying that pure CO2 was the peak metamorphic fluid. The variable CH4 content of CO2 inclusions within graphite-bearing samples suggests that CH4 was introduced locally after the formation of the CO2 inclusions; however the origin of the CH4 remains problematic. An aqueous fluid clearly penetrated the gneisses after the peak metamorphism (during uplift/erosion), forming secondary inclusions and contributing to the minor retrogressive hydration observed in these rocks. The presence of the pseudosecondary, high-density CO2 inclusions in quartz crystals in the KSZ rocks constrains the uplift/ erosion path for the KSZ to one of simultaneous decrease in pressure and temperature.  相似文献

A long range transport model and its application to an Etna plume are described. The model is a classical segmented plume lagrangian trajectory model. Firstly, air mass trajectories are computed by using the actual winds observed at the E.C.M.W.F. (Reading U.K.). The model then determines 5-day trajectories starting every 3 hours and made of 3-hour segments. Vertical movements of air parcels are taken into account by using the vertical component of the synoptic wind. Secondly, diffusion, SO2 to SO4 transformation and dry deposition are calculated for each trajectory segment. Sensitivity tests are presented and the results of the simulation for an experimental field period (21–25 september 1983) are examined.  相似文献

A bottom-mounted sonar operating at 40 kHz has been used to measure the variation of bottom acoustic scattering over extended time intervals at two shallow sites as part of the Coastal Benthic Boundary Layer Special Research Project. The acoustic data were analyzed using a correlation method that measures the spatial and temporal dependence of benthic change. The rate of decorrelation was two orders of magnitude more rapid at a sandy site near Panama City, Florida, USA, than at a silty site in Eckernförde Bay, Germany, and both sites were characterized by hot spots or localized regions of activity.  相似文献

Quantitative visualization of acoustic images is used to compare the properties and behavior of high temperature hydrothermal plumes at two sites with different source configurations, increasing our understanding of how plume behavior reflects source configuration. Acoustic imaging experiments were conducted at the Clam Acres area of the Southwest Vent Field, 21°N East Pacific Rise and at Monolith Vent, North Cleft segment, Juan de Fuca Ridge. At Clam Acres, black smokers discharge from two adjacent chimneys which act as point sources, whereas multiple vents at Monolith Vent define a distributed elliptical source. Both plumes exhibit consistent dilution patterns, reasonable fits to the expected power law increase in centerline dilution with height, and simple bending of plume centerlines in response to ambient currents. Our data suggest that point source vents are associated with ordered plume structure, normal entrainment rates, and initial expansion of isosurfaces while distributed source vents are associated with disorganized plume structure, variable entrainment rates, and initial contraction of isosurfaces.  相似文献

Detailed photochemical models are constructed for two model atmospheres: (1) 100% CH4 and (2) 50% H2, 50% CH4. Both models predict large column densities of C2H2 and C2H6 (~1 cm atm) for eddy mixing rates ~105 cm2 sec?, which are comparable to rates appropriate for Jupiter. These column densities vary inversely with the eddy diffusion coefficient. The models confirm the interpretation by Danielson et al. (1973) of the 12μ feature in the spectra of Gillet et al. (1973) as emission by C2H6 in a thermal inversion region. The C2H6C2H2 mixing ratio is sensitive to the net escape rate of H atoms from the exobase.  相似文献

Material from the Galilean satellites of Jupiter ejected by energetic particles in the Jovian magnetosphere may provide large sources of oxygen to the parent planet. Formation of a CO molecule is the ultimate fate of an oxygen atom in the upper Jovian atmosphere. This high altitude source of CO supports Beer and Taylor's (1978, Astrophys. J.221) observations and analysis, provided that the globally averaged O atom input flux is ~107 cm?2 sec?1 and the eddy diffusion coefficient at the tropopause is ~103 cm2 sec?1. Implications for the possible presence of other atoms and molecules derived from the satellites are discussed.  相似文献

 As a part of the Atmospheric Model Intercomparison Project (AMIP), the behaviour of 15 general circulation models has been analysed in order to diagnose and compare the ability of the different models in simulating Northern Hemisphere midlatitude atmospheric blocking. In accordance with the established AMIP procedure, the 10-year model integrations were performed using prescribed, time-evolving monthly mean observed SSTs spanning the period January 1979–December 1988. Atmospheric observational data (ECMWF analyses) over the same period have been also used to verify the models results. The models involved in this comparison represent a wide spectrum of model complexity, with different horizontal and vertical resolution, numerical techniques and physical parametrizations, and exhibit large differences in blocking behaviour. Nevertheless, a few common features can be found, such as the general tendency to underestimate both blocking frequency and the average duration of blocks. The problem of the possible relationship between model blocking and model systematic errors has also been assessed, although without resorting to ad-hoc numerical experimentation it is impossible to relate with certainty particular model deficiencies in representing blocking to precise parts of the model formulation.
