The continental shelf and the upper slope of the Gulf of Palermo (Southern Tyrrhenian Sea) in the depth interval ranging from 50 to 1,500 m were mapped for the first time with Multi Beam echosounder and high resolution seismic. Seven submarine canyons are confined to the upper slope or indent the shelf-edge and enter the Palermo intraslope basin at a depth of around 1,300 m. The canyons evolved through concurrent top-down turbiditic processes and bottom-up retrogressive mass failures. Most of the mass failure features of the area are related to canyon-shaping processes and only few of them are not confined to the upper slope. In general, these features probably do not represent a significant tsunami hazard along the coast. The geological element that controls the evolution of the canyons and induces sediment instability corresponds to the steep slope gradient, especially in the western sector of the Gulf, where the steepest canyons are located. The structural features mapped in the Palermo offshore contributed to the regulation of mass failure processes in the area, with direct faults and antiform structures coinciding with some of the canyon heads. Furthermore, the occurrence of pockmarks and highs that probably consist of authigenic carbonates above faulted and folded strata suggests a local relationship between structural control, fluid escape processes and mass failure. This paper presents a valuable high-resolution morphologic dataset of the Gulf of Palermo, which constitutes a reliable base for evaluating the geo-hazard potential related to slope failure in the area.  相似文献

A methodology for the assessment of the seismic energy demands imposed on structures is proposed. The research was carried out through two consecutive phases. Inelastic design input energy spectra for systems with a prescribed displacement ductility ratio were first developed. The study of the inelastic behavior of energy factors and the evaluation of the response modification in comparison with the elastic case were performed by introducing two new parameters, namely: (1) the Response Modification Factor of the earthquake input energy (RE), representing the ratio of the elastic to inelastic input energy spectral values and (2) the ratio α of the area enclosed by the inelastic input energy spectrum in the range of periods between 0.05 and 4.0 s to the corresponding elastic value. The proposed design inelastic energy spectra, resulting from the study of a large set of strong motion records, were obtained as a function of ductility, soil type, source-to-site distance and magnitude.Subsequently, with reference to single degree of freedom systems, the spectra of the hysteretic to input energy ratio were evaluated, for different soil types and target ductility ratios. These spectra, defined to evaluate the hysteretic energy demand of structures, were described by a piecewise linear idealization that allows to distinguish three distinct regions as a function of the vibration period. In this manner, once the inelastic design input energy spectra were determined, the definition of the energy dissipated by means of inelastic deformations followed directly from the knowledge of hysteretic to input energy ratio.The design spectra of both input energy and hysteretic to input energy ratio were defined considering an elasto-plastic behavior. Nevertheless, other constitutive models were taken into account for comparison purposes.  相似文献

The present article illustrates a straightforward case of hydrothermal dolomitization, affecting Jurassic platform limestones of the Provençal and Subbriançonnais Domains (Maritime Alps, North-Western Italy). Dolomitized bodies are randomly distributed within the host limestone, and are commonly associated with dolomite vein networks and tabular bodies of dolomite-cemented breccias discordant with respect to bedding. Main dolomite types are a finely to medium-crystalline replacive dolomite and a coarsely-crystalline saddle dolomite occurring both as replacive and as cement. Stratigraphic constraints indicate that dolomitization occurred during the Cretaceous, in a shallow burial context, and was due to the circulation of hot fluids (temperature about 200 °C, as indicated by fluid inclusion microthermometry) through faults and related fracture networks. Hydrothermal dolomitization therefore indirectly documents a Cretaceous fault activity in the Maritime Alps segment of the European Tethyan passive margin.  相似文献

A fundamental yet still unresolved puzzle provided by cataclasis is whether particle size reduction mostly progresses through time by the same fragmentation mechanism or not. Available field, laboratory and numerical modelling results on the evolution of cataclastic rocks are still controversial. The evidence that cataclastic rocks exert a primary control on the frictional strength, stability, seismic velocity and permeability properties of fault zones encourages further research on cataclasis. Here, we report data on particle shape from natural cataclastic rocks in poorly layered carbonates in the Apulian foreland of the Southern Apennines of Italy. Particle shape analyses show that particle angularity decreases with increasing size and, for a given size class, it decreases with increasing fractal dimension of the particle size distribution. These results offer support to the temporally and spatially variable nature of rock comminution.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Laboratory experiments on rock faulting show that processes of particle comminution in fault rocks are influenced by several parameters, including fault strike and normal stress across faults. In nature, normal stress across faults increases with increasing transpressional strike of faults. Accordingly, different structural fabrics and particle size distributions are expected for cataclastic rocks that have developed along faults with different transpressional orientations and comparable displacements within regional-scale strike-slip fault zones. Adjacent bands of cataclastic gouge and breccia were analysed from four small-scale fault zones. All have comparable displacements and very similar protolith (i.e. shallow-water limestone), structure, kinematics, size, and tectonic environment, but different transpressional strikes within the regional-scale left-lateral Mattinata strike-slip fault, Italy. An inverse linear relationship is found between fault transpressional angles and fractal dimensions of particle size distributions from cataclastic rock samples.  相似文献

We present the concept and the status of a multi-year project based on a new method to measure the Gravitational Red Shift of the Solar Spectrum with high precision. This project is aimed to conduct experimental verifications of the effect that the Einstein theory of General Relativity predicts for the frequencies of the Fraunhofer lines, that is, the light spectrum emitted by the Sun in its strong gravitational field. Previous determinations of such effect is limited to a precision of 2%. In order to discriminate between classical and relativistic explanations, we need to be sensitive to one part per million of the predicted effect. We have developed a new powerful technique, the Magneto-Optical Filter, that is able to provide far better precision and, for the future, possible space instrumentations able to extend our test to the second-order effect of the relativistic equivalence principle, never done before. The present paper is intended to describe the instrumentation, the procedure and the first encouraging results.  相似文献

In order to apply the mechanical properties (measured on material specimens or laboratory‐sized models) to large structures (such as concrete dams), a non‐linear theory able to predict the size‐scale effect has to be used. One of these theories was first proposed by Hillerborg and co‐workers (fictitious crack model) and is based on the earlier works by Barenblatt and Dugdale for metals (cohesive crack model). It is based on the existence of a fracture process zone (FPZ), where the material undergoes strain softening. The behaviour of the material outside the FPZ is linear elastic. A large number of short‐time laboratory tests were executed, by varying the load, under crack mouth opening displacement control. Since concrete exhibits a time‐dependent behaviour, an interaction between creep and micro‐crack growth occurs in the FPZ. Therefore, different testing conditions can be applied: rupture can be achieved by keeping the load constant before peak value (pre‐peak tests), or after peak value and after an unloading and reloading procedure (post‐peak tests). The crack propagation rate is shown to be small enough to neglect inertial forces and large enough to keep the time‐dependent behaviour of the process zone as dominant compared to the behaviour of the undamaged and viscoelastic zone. Due to the variability in material microstructure from one specimen to another, experimental data show large ranges of scatter. Well established methods in probability theory require sufficient experimental data in order to assume a probability density distribution. The objective of this study is to investigate the ranges of variation of the time response under constant load in simple structural elements associated with pre‐selected variation (fuzziness) in the main material parameters. For situations where the values of the material parameters are of a non‐stochastic nature, the fuzzy set approach to modelling variability has been proposed as a better and more natural approach. The Gaia SpectroPhotometric Standard Stars (SPSS) survey started in 2006, was awarded almost 450 observing nights and accumulated almost 100000 raw data frames with both photometric and spectroscopic observations. Such large observational effort requires careful, homogeneous, and automatic data reduction and quality control procedures. In this paper, we quantitatively evaluate instrumental effects that might have a significant (i.e., ≥1 %) impact on the Gaia SPSS flux calibration. The measurements involve six different instruments, monitored over the eight years of observations dedicated to the Gaia flux standards campaigns: DOLORES@TNG in La Palma, EFOSC2@NTT and ROSS@REM in La Silla, CAFOS@2.2m in Calar Alto, BFOSC@Cassini in Loiano, and LaRuca@1.5m in San Pedro Mártir. We examine and quantitatively evaluate the following effects: CCD linearity and shutter times, calibration frames stability, lamp flexures, second order contamination, light polarization, and fringing. We present methods to correct for the relevant effects which can be applied to a wide range of observational projects at similar instruments. (© 2015 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co.
