A sharp line delimitating the distribution of tourmaline (termed as a ‘tourmaline‐out isograd’) is defined in the migmatite zone of the Ryoke metamorphic belt, Japan. The trend of the tourmaline‐out isograd closely matches that of the isograds formed through the regional metamorphism, suggesting that it represents the breakdown front of tourmaline during regional metamorphism. This is confirmed by the presence of the reaction textures of tourmaline to sillimanite and cordierite near the tourmaline‐out isograd. The breakdown of tourmaline would release boron into associated melts or fluids and be an important factor in controlling the behaviour of boron in tourmaline‐bearing high‐temperature metamorphic rocks. Near the tourmaline‐out isograd, large tourmaline crystals occur in the centre of interboudin partitions containing leucosome. In the melanosome of the intervening matrix, reaction textures involving tourmaline are locally observed. These observations imply that tourmaline breakdown is related to a melting reaction and that the boron in the leucosome is derived from the breakdown of tourmaline in the melanosome during prograde metamorphism. Boron released by tourmaline breakdown lowers both the solidus temperature of the rock and the viscosity of any associated melt. Considering that the tourmaline‐out isograd lies close to the schist–migmatite boundary, these effects might have enhanced melt generation and segregation in the migmatite zone of the Ryoke belt. The evidence for the breakdown of tourmaline and the almost complete absence of any borosilicates throughout the migmatite zone suggest that boron was effectively removed from this region by the movement of melt and/or fluid. This implies that the tourmaline‐out isograd can reflect a significant amount of mass transfer in the anatectic zones.  相似文献

A new method is presented for estimating crustal thickness from gravity and topography data on the Moon. By calculating analytically the exterior gravitational field for a set of arbitrarily shaped polyhedra, relief along the crust-mantle interface can be inverted for that satisfies the observational constraints. As this method does not rely upon filtering the Bouguer anomaly, which was required with previous inversions performed in the spherical-harmonic domain, and as the dramatic variations in spatial quality of the lunar gravity field are taken into account, our crustal thickness model more faithfully represents the available data. Using our model results, we investigate various aspects of the prominent nearside impact basins. The crustal thickness in the central portion of the Orientale and Crisium basins is found to be close to zero, suggesting that these basins could have conceivably excavated into the lunar mantle. Furthermore, given our uncertain knowledge of the density of the crust and mantle, it is possible that the Humorum, Humboldtianum, Nectaris, and Smythii basins could have excavated all the way through the crust as well. The crustal structure for most of the young impact basins implies a depth/diameter ratio of about 0.08 for their excavation cavities. As noted in previous studies, however, the crustal structure of Imbrium and Serenitatis is anomalous, which is conceivably a result of enhanced rates of post-impact viscous relaxation caused by the proximity of these basins to the Procellarum KREEP Terrane. Impact basins older than Smythii show little or no evidence for crustal thinning, suggesting that these ancient basins were also affected by high rates of viscous relaxation resulting from higher crustal temperatures early in the Moon's evolution. The lithosphere beneath many young basins is found to be supporting a downward directed force, even after the load associated with the mare basalts is removed, and this is plausibly attributed to superisostatic uplift of the crust-mantle interface. Those basins that are close to achieving a pre-mare isostatic state are generally found to reside within, or close to, the Procellarum KREEP Terrane.  相似文献

Abstract— A new organic parameter is proposed to show a chemical sequence of organic matter in carbonaceous chondrites, using carbon, hydrogen, and nitrogen concentrations of solvent‐insoluble and high‐molecular weight organic matter (macromolecules) and the molecular abundance of solvent‐extractable organic compounds. The H/C atomic ratio of the macromolecule purified from nine CM chondrites including the Murchison, Sayama, and seven Antarctic meteorites varies widely from 0.11 to 0.72. During the H/C change of ?0.7 to ?0.3, the N/C atomic ratio remains at ?0.04, followed by a sharp decline from ?0.040 to ?0.017 between H/C ratios from ?0.3 to ?0.1. The H/CN/C sequence shows different degrees of organic matter thermal alteration among these chondrites in which the smaller H/C‐N/C value implies higher alteration levels on the meteorite parent body. In addition, solvent‐extractable organic compounds such as amino acids, carboxylic acids, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are abundant only in chondrites with macromolecular H/C values >?0.5. These organic compounds were extremely depleted in the chondrites with a macromolecular H/C value of <?0.5. Possibly, most solvent‐extractable organic compounds could have been lost during the thermal alteration event that caused the H/C ratio of the macromolecule to fall below 0.4.  相似文献

Abstract

Pakistan has suffered a devastating flood disaster in 2010. In the Kabul River basin (92 605 km2), large-scale riverine and flash floods caused destructive damage with more than 1100 casualties. This study analysed rainfall–runoff and inundation in the Kabul River basin with a newly developed model that simulates the processes of rainfall–runoff and inundation simultaneously based on two-dimensional diffusion wave equations. The simulation results showed a good agreement with an inundation map produced based on MODIS for large-scale riverine flooding. In addition, the simulation identified flash flood-affected areas, which were confirmed to be severely damaged based on a housing damage distribution map. Since the model is designed to be used even immediately after a disaster, it can be a useful tool for analysing large-scale flooding and to provide supplemental information to agencies for relief operations.

A number of seismoacoustic T-wave events were observed between January 2003 and January 2004 by broadband ocean-bottom seismometers installed on the French Polynesia seafloor at depths of 4,000?C5,000?m, well below the conjugate depth of the SOFAR channel. Using T-wave arrival times, we located 89 T-wave events along the Pacific-Antarctic Ridge. Among these, 63 events were not detected by land-based seismic observations of the United States Geological Survey (USGS), which was nearly twice the number of earthquakes reported by the USGS in the area during the observation period. We used a simple method to estimate earthquake magnitude from T-wave energy. The magnitudes of the events unidentified by the USGS ranged from 2.3 to 5.5, whereas magnitudes of the earthquakes reported by the USGS ranged from 4.1 to 6.2. Our study suggests that T-wave observations with abyssal ocean-bottom seismometers can improve the detection of small earthquakes and help our understanding of the seismotectonics of remote oceanic areas.  相似文献

We discuss the possibility of accurately estimating the source number density of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) using small-scale anisotropy in their arrival distribution. The arrival distribution has information on their source and source distribution. We calculate the propagation of UHE protons in a structured extragalactic magnetic field (EGMF) and simulate their arrival distribution at the Earth using our previously developed method. The source number density that can best reproduce observational results by Akeno Giant Air Shower Array is estimated at about 10−5 Mpc−3 in a simple source model. Despite having large uncertainties of about one order of magnitude, due to small number of observed events in current status, we find that more detection of UHECRs in the Auger era can sufficiently decrease this so that the source number density can be more robustly estimated. Two hundred event observation above 4 × 1019 eV in a hemisphere can discriminate between 10−5 and 10−6 Mpc−3. Number of events to discriminate between 10−4 and 10−5 Mpc−3 is dependent on EGMF strength. We also discuss the same in another source model in this paper.  相似文献

To obtain physical insights into the response and feedback of low clouds (C l ) to global warming, ensemble 4?×?CO2 experiments were carried out with two climate models, the Model for Interdisciplinary Research on Climate (MIROC) versions 3.2 and 5. For quadrupling CO2, tropical-mean C l decreases, and hence, acts as positive feedback in MIROC3, whereas it increases and serves as negative feedback in MIROC5. Three time scales of tropical-mean C l change were identified—an initial adjustment without change in the global-mean surface air temperature, a slow response emerging after 10–20?years, and a fast response in between. The two models share common features for the former two changes in which C l decreases. The slow response reflects the variability of C l associated with the El Ni?o-Southern Oscillation in the control integration, and may therefore be constrained by observations. However, the fast response is opposite in the two models and dominates the total response of C l . Its sign is determined by a subtle residual of the C l increase and decrease over the ascending and subsidence regions, respectively. The regional C l increase is consistent with a more frequent occurrence of a stable condition, and vice versa, as measured by lower-tropospheric stability (LTS). The above frequency change in LTS is similarly found in six other climate models despite a large difference in both the mean and the changes in the low-cloud fraction for a given LTS. This suggests that the response of the thermodynamic constraint for C l to increasing CO2 concentrations is a robust part of the climate change.  相似文献

An instrument for measuringtropospheric OH/HO2 radicals by laser-inducedfluorescence developed in our laboratory is presentedin detail. It is based on FAGE (fluorescence assay bygas expansion) technique and OH is both excited anddetected at 308 nm corresponding to its A-X(0,0) band.The alignment of the laser beam, the design of thesample gas inlet, and the devices for the fluorescencedetection are optimized so as to reduce the backgroundsignal while keeping the OH sensitivity as high aspossible. A thermalized position of the expanding gasbeam is probed in our system and we did not observe asevere decrease of the HOx sensitivities under humidconditions. An optical fiber is used for deliveringthe laser light to the fluorescence detection cellmounted outside at a high position. Thus the laserbeam alignment is by far simplified and is made highlyreproducible, once settled properly. For thecalibration, two methods are employed: a system withlaser absorption measurements of OH and a system ofsimultaneous photolysis of H2O and O2. Thecalibration factors are compared well within thecombined uncertainty. Using the latter system, theconversion efficiency of HO2 to OH by NO additionis measured to be around 90%. The detection limitsfor OH and HO2 (S/N = 2) are estimated to be3.3 × 106 and 3.6 × 106cm–3 at noon,respectively, with an integration time of 1 min. Theresults of test observations at our institute are alsopresented.  相似文献
