Soils are often structured as fine-porous aggregates separated by large inter-aggregate pores. Under unsaturated conditions, water is mostly stored in the aggregates and water flow depends on the properties of the aggregates as well as on those of the contacts between aggregates. The goal of this study is to model and evaluate the hydraulic properties of the contacts. We used neutron radiography to monitor the infiltration of water through series of aggregates. The flow process was numerically simulated by considering the hydraulically conducting contact area between aggregates as a variable that depends on the capillary pressure. This contact area was evaluated by matching the observed and simulated water flow across aggregates. We determined the conductivity of the contacts assuming that it scales with the contact area. We also measured the equivalent conductivity of series of aggregates. We found that during drainage the hydraulically conducting contact area drastically decreases and the conductivity of the contacts becomes much smaller than that of the aggregates. We also found that the equivalent conductivity of the aggregate series decreases as the conductivity of the contacts. We concluded that the contacts control the flow: they are highly conductive when wet, but act as bottle-necks under drained conditions. The abrupt transition between these two limiting cases indicates that the contact region is more rapidly drained than the aggregate interior. Our findings might be extended to describe water transfer to an evaporating boundary, infiltration and storage of water in unsaturated aggregated soils.  相似文献

The temporal and spatial distribution of water within a porous medium is affected by the medium’s structure, i.e., the spatial arrangement of its constituents. To analyze structural effects on the fluid dynamics, we measured the 3D water content distribution in a heterogeneous sand column during two drainage-wetting cycles using neutron transmission tomography. The sample with a volume of 105 cm3 contained 101 cubes of fine and 49 cubes of coarse sand with particles ranging from 0.01 to 0.05 and 0.03 to 0.09 cm, respectively. The pressure at the lower boundary was determined by the water reservoir positioned between 7 and 39 cm below the top of the column. The duration of one complete 3D scanning with a spatial resolution of 127 μm was 56 s. The signal to noise ratio of the measurements was low due to the short exposure time in the neutron beam, but it was possible to quantify the water content in the individual cubes and hence the effect of structure on macroscopic water distribution. Continuous structures of coarse sand drained faster than coarse sand without connection to the upper boundary. During the initial wetting phase, cubes of coarse sand material completely embedded in the fine material remained water unsaturated due to air entrapment. The effect of the coarse sand connectivity was analyzed in two-dimensional numerical simulations based on Richards equation. In contrast to the measurements, no effect of structure connectivity was found. The coarse sand cubes embedded within the fine matrix drain as quickly as the coarse sand cubes arranged in a continuous channel due to the model assumption of a continuous air phase.  相似文献

Daily maximum and minimum temperatures from 29 low-lying and mountain stations of 7 countries in Central Europe were analyzed. The analysis of the annual variation of diurnal temperature range helps to distinguish unique climatic characteristics of high and low altitude stations. A comparison of the time series of extreme daily temperatures as well as mean temperature shows a good agreement between the low-lying stations and the mountain stations. Many of the pronounced warm and cold periods are present in all time series and are therefore representative for the whole region. A linear trend analysis of the station data for the period 1901–1990 (19 stations) and 1951–1990 (all 29 stations) shows spatial patterns of similar changes in maximum and minimum daily temperatures and diurnal temperature range. Mountain stations show only small changes of the diurnal temperature range over the 1901–1990 period, whereas the low-lying stations in the western part of the Alps show a significant decrease of diurnal temperature range, caused by strong increase of the minimum temperature. For the shorter period 1951–1990, the diurnal temperature range decreases at the western low-lying stations, mainly in spring, whereas it remains roughly constant at the mountain stations. The decrease of diurnal temperature range is stronger in the western part than in the eastern part of the Alps.  相似文献

In the present study, heat-shock protein of M(r) 70 kDa (HSP70), a marker of cellular stress response, was validated as a potential biomarker under field conditions. The dab, Limanda limanda (female, size > or = 25 cm, spawning maturity stage 2) was used as the indicator organism. The data on HSP level were correlated with the occurrence of DNA damage, measured in the same specimens of L. limanda, to prove the usefulness of the method. The area under investigation was the North Sea. Four locations were selected: station N01, close to Heligoland, in the North Sea; station N04 at the Dogger Bank; station N06 at the Firth of Forth; and station G08 in the English Channel. Ten animals from each location were selected and their livers used for the experiments. The results show that the highest levels of HSP70 (consisting of two forms of M(r) 75 and 73 kDa) were in fish from station N04, while low values were measured in livers from L. limanda collected at station N01. Intermediate levels were seen in the animals from the two other locations. By application of a novel technique, it was found that the extent of DNA damage (single-strand breaks and alkaline labile sites) in fish liver parallels the levels of both HSP70 forms. Our results suggest that L. limanda may be a useful bioindicator and heat-shock proteins, a useful biomarker for monitoring of environmental pollution.  相似文献
