The role of the open standpipe Casagrande piezometer for determining soil pore pressures is still important because of its simplicity and reliability in comparison with transducer type instruments. Such factors are especially relevant when instrumentation is used on remote and inaccessible sites. The limitations of Casagrande type systems relate to poor response times, particularly in soils of low permeability, and the complexity of the normal gas bubbling equipment used to monitor and record data from this type of piezometer. The response can be improved, providing the design of the installation is taken into consideration in terms of the piezometer collection area and standpipe sizes. A simple acoustic technique has been developed by Geotechnical Monitoring Ltd, to monitor and record piezometric levels. This is based on measuring the period for the return echo of a high frequency signal; a technique widely used to focus cameras that has been found to be reliable and accurate. However, trials on landslide sites in Indonesia highlighted problems which related more to a lack of development rather than any fundamental problems in the method of monitoring standpipes. This paper describes such problems and how they might be overcome.  相似文献

In this paper we review the gravitational instability theory of galaxy formation. Closed-form expressions for the rate of growth of density perturbations in the regime prior to recombination are presented in special cases in which the cosmological constant is non-zero. After recombination, the fate of perturbations in Lemaître universes is studied with the aid of exact solutions to the density perturbation equation orginally derived by Bonnor.  相似文献

Stratospheric ozone depressions, following intense solar particle events (SPE) observed by the backscattered ultraviolet (BUV) experiment on the Nimbus-4 satellite, indicate the existence of distinct asymmetries between the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. These asymmetries are observed in the magnitude of the depressions above the 5-mb level, their temporal variations, and the spatial (i.e., latitude and longitude) dependence of these variations. Possible causes of asymmetries, shown by two events on 4 August 1972 and 25 January 1971, can be attributed to: (1) tilt of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) with respect to the Earth's dipole magnetic field which influences the precipitation of energetic solar particles into the polar atmospheres; (2) differences in ozone chemistry caused by the large change in atmospheric temperature between summer and winter hemispheres; (3) seasonal differences of the stratosphere's dynamic states which are affected by upward propagating planetary waves in winter in contrast to the relatively undisturbed zonal flow in summer; (4) topographic asymmetry between Northern and Southern Hemispheres.These effects are shown by three-dimensional plots of the events in geographic coordinates and by color contour plots of the stratospheric ozone distributions in geomagnetic and geographic polar coordinates, respectively.  相似文献

Post-fire debris flows and tailing impoundment failures destroy lives and property. These geologic hazards – and other similar processes – fall on a continuum between classic Newtonian flood analyses and geotechnical stability analyses. The US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) is developing a non-Newtonian library (DebrisLib) that includes a suite of rheological and clastic approaches to hyper-concentrated, mudflow and debris flow dynamics. The Hydrologic Engineering Center (HEC) has implemented these non-Newtonian methods into the widely used, public-domain open-channel hydraulics and morphodynamic software, HEC-RAS (river analysis system). This work presents part of the verification and validation of these non-Newtonian approaches, applying several rheological equations to published laboratory results high-concentration flume experiments. This study tested the linear Bingham model as well as the turbulent and Bagnold quadratic terms of the O'Brien equation. HEC-RAS also includes the non-linear Herschel–Bulkley (HB) approach, which quantifies shear-thickening or shear-thinning processes. The study used these non-Newtonian models in HEC-RAS to simulate 10 of Parsons et al.’s (2001) flume experiments, which measured the snout and plug velocity of fluids with high solid concentrations (Cv = 68–74%) and a broad range of material gradations (d50 = 0.05–1 mm, d15 = 0.006–0.1 mm). The experiments also measured and back-calculated Bingham and HB parameters of the materials, finding HB powers between 0.45 and 1.25 (i.e. fluids that are dilatant, pseudo-plastic and visco-plastic). The rheological models incorporated into DebrisLib and implemented in HEC-RAS reproduce experimental data well for most experiments. The Bingham model generated a plug velocity root-mean-square error (RMSE) of 0.21 m/s using standard flow parameters and Parsons et al.’s calibrated parameters, a substantial improvement over the unmodified shallow water flow equations (RMSE 0.77 m/s). Experiments with strong snout effects tended to generate higher residuals, especially in the snout velocity. The RMSE associated with the O'Brien equation was larger with the Parsons et al. fit parameters, but similar (0.23 m/s) with measured parameters. The turbulent parameter was the largest (often the dominant) parameter in most O'Brien simulations, with the dispersive stress only proving significant for the coarsest material. DebrisLib had to use a modified version of the dispersive term to simulate these concentrations. Both the 2D depth-averaged shallow water equation (SWE) and diffusion wave equation were used to simulate the experiments. The best results were obtained with the SWE with horizontal mixing.  相似文献

Although Late Cambrian microbial build-ups were recognized in the Point Peak Member of the Wilberns Formation in Central Texas (USA) nearly 70 years ago, only a few studies focused specifically on the build-ups themselves. This study focuses on the interpretation of the regional (15 measured sections described in literature representing an area of 8000 km2) and local (field and drone photogrammetry studies in a 25 km2 area from within south Mason County) microbial build-up occurrence, describes their growth phases and details their interactions with the surrounding inter-build-up sediments. The study establishes the occurrence of microbial build-ups in the lower and upper Point Peak members (the Point Peak Member is informally broken up into the lower Point Peak and the upper Point Peak members separated by Plectotrophia zone). The lower Point Peak Member consists of three <1 m thick microbial bioherms and biostrome units, in addition to heterolithic and skeletal/ooid grainstone and packstone beds. One, up to 14 m thick, microbial unit associated with inter-build-up skeletal and ooid grainstone and packstone beds, intercalated with mixed siliciclastic–carbonate silt beds, characterizes the upper Point Peak member. The microbial unit in the upper Point Peak member displays a three-phase growth evolution, from an initial colonization phase on flat based, rip-up clast lenses, to a second aggradation and lateral expansion phase, into a third well-defined capping phase. The ultimate demise of the microbial build-ups is interpreted to have been triggered by an increase of water turbidity caused by a sudden influx of fine siliciclastics. The lower Point Peak member represents inner ramp shallow subtidal and intertidal facies and the upper Point Peak member corresponds to mid-outer ramp subtidal facies. Understanding the morphological architecture and depositional context of these features is of importance for identifying signatures of early life on Earth.  相似文献

Temperature and salinity observations at 17 stations off the east coast of New Zealand are presented. Geostrophic current stations just north of the Subtropical Convergence suggest the presence of an anticyclonic eddy similar to but east of that found by Garner in the period February‐March 1963 (Garner 1967). Ridgway (in press) has suggested that eddies formed at East Cape proceed down the east coast of the North Island of New Zealand giving rise to the East Cape Current. It is proposed here that these eddies move east after leaving the coast in the vinicity of the southern limit of the Hikurangi Trench.  相似文献

Evaluation of velocity data on water movements over the New Zealand continental shelf has revealed that the mean circulation by itself is too slow to induce transport of bottom sediments. Tides generally have higher velocities, but are still not the main transporting agent except in the tide‐dominated Cook and Foveaux. Straits. Waves have the potential to stir sediments on the inner and middle shelf (less than about 70 m deep) during annual storms, and probably down to 130 m depth during the maximum 25‐y storm.

For sediment transport to take place, energies of at least two of the major water movements would have to complement one another. Optimum conditions for transport probably occur during storm periods when wave‐suspended sediment is readily moved by tides and the mean circulation.

The direction of transport is mainly along the continental shelf and is largely in response to prevailing weather patterns coincident with the direction of the mean circulation and strongly reinforced by the appropriate phase of the tide.  相似文献
