The orbital parameters of Cosmos 58 have been determined at 65 epochs from some 4500 observations, between March 1982 and September 1983, using the RAE orbit refinement program, PROP. During this time, the satellite passed slowly through 15th-order resonance, and the orbital inclination and eccentricity have been analysed. Six lumped 15th-order geopotential harmonic coefficients have been evaluated, with an accuracy equivalent to between 0.8 and 2.0cm in geoid height. Six 30th-order coefficients have also been determined, with accuracies between 2 and 7 cm in geoid height. The coefficients have been compared with those from the GEM 10B and 10C models. We compare the electron densities of two martian ionospheric layers, which we call M1 and M2, measured by Mars Global Surveyor during 9-27 March 1999, with the electron densities of the terrestrial E and F1 layers derived from ionosonde data at six sites. The day-to-day variations are all linked to changes in solar activity, and provide the opportunity of making the first simultaneous study of four photochemical layers in the solar system. The ‘ionospheric layer index’, which we introduce to characterize ionospheric layers in general, varies between layers because different atmospheric chemistry and solar radiations are involved. This paper describes a technique for applying the transition probability geostatistics method for stochastic simulation to a MODFLOW model. Transition probability geostatistics has some advantages over traditional indicator kriging methods including a simpler and more intuitive framework for interpreting geologic relationships and the ability to simulate juxtapositional tendencies such as fining upward sequences. The indicator arrays generated by the transition probability simulation are converted to layer elevation and thickness arrays for use with the new Hydrogeologic Unit Flow package in MODFLOW 2000. This makes it possible to preserve complex heterogeneity while using reasonably sized grids and/or grids with nonuniform cell thicknesses. 相似文献

We use a multi-proxy (n = 11) paleolimnological approach on deep-water sediment from eastern Lake Ontario to characterize both long- and short-term regional climate change over the past ~10,000 calendar years. Proxies included % total organic matter, % total carbonate, magnetic susceptibility, C/N ratios, % organic carbon, % total nitrogen, % biogenic silica and 18O and 13C of carbonate, as well as 13C and 15N of bulk organic matter. There is a marked shift in most proxies at ~9.4 ka which defines the start of Holocene warmth in this region. Prior to this, the area was influenced by the post-Younger Dryas cold/wet interval, controlled by a southward displacement of the polar front jet stream, when many proxies were at their minimum. The Hypsithermal interval (~9.4–5.3 ka) was the warmest and wettest of the Holocene due to a long-term increase in summer insolation. The Hypsithermal, however, was interrupted by two cold climates; the 8.2 ka event (~8.4–8.0 ka) and the Nipissing Rise (~6.8–5.0 ka), both of which are linked to a reduction in thermohaline circulation and northward oceanic heat transport. The Neoglacial interval (~5.3 ka to ~1850 AD), driven by a long-term decrease in summer insolation, was cooler and dryer, but more stable, than the Hypsithermal. The short Historic interval (post ~1850 AD) was characterized by some of the largest amplitude and most abrupt anomalies of the past 10,000 years, due to intense anthropogenic activity, when a number of proxies reached unprecedented values. 相似文献

Summary Relationships between photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) and solar radiation (SR) and between diffuse radiation and global radiation at Bloemfontein, South Africa were investigated. The ratio of PAR to SR (PAR/SR) has been reported from many places in the northern hemisphere, but there were not many PAR/SR measurements documented from the southern hemisphere, including the study region. Based on the present observations, mean PAR/SR in the region (0.48) was not exceptionally different from other reported data (0.45–0.50). The effects of sky condition on PAR/SR were also investigated and confirmed the previous findings. PAR/SR increased as the clearness index (KT=ratio of global to extraterrestrial SR) decreased, as sky conditions varied from clear to cloudy. Thus, PAR/SR can be a simple function of the clearness index (the global PAR model). In this study, PAR/SR was explained by a quadratic function of KT. For the relationship between diffuse and global radiation, a simple linear threshold diffuse PAR model, as a linear function of KT, was proposed for the study region using long-term data of diffuse and global SR. Using the previous findings on the relationship between the ratio of diffuse to global SR (KSR) and the ratio of diffuse to global PAR (KPAR), at high KT, KPAR can be estimated as 30% higher than KSR, while at low KTKPAR is equivalent to KSR. 相似文献

The theory specifying the change i in a satellite's orbital inclination due to atmospheric rotation, in terms of the decrease in orbital period T, has been extended to an atmosphere with sinusoidal variation of density between day and night. It is found that with certain special sets of values for the orbital parameters, the day-to-night variation in the Earth's atmosphere can alter the equation for i/T by as much as 25% though only for a few days. Appreciable changes in i/T persisting for several months can only occur for certain resonant orbits: the maximum change is then about 8%. Ionospheric radars are an important tool for studying magnetospheric dynamics. The nature of such instruments is described and their application to a number of important problems is discussed, emphasizing South African work. A study of the theory of reflection from irregularities is discussed. The nature of ULF pulsations of more than one type has been elucidated by radar studies. An improvement of the understanding of magnetospheric convection has been achieved. A new HF radar experiment being developed for operation at SANAE, Antarctica, is described. An HF radar will be operated at SANAE in conjunction with the British radar at Halley to provide vector information about magnetospheric convection within that part of the magnetosphere which maps to a large portion of the Antarctic continent.
