Cobalt is obtained mainly as a byproduct of the mining and metallurgical processing of copper and nickel. The amount of minable
cobalt has a characteristic supply limit, which is dependent upon demand for copper and nickel. It is considered that cobalt
consumption will be affected by the amount mined in the near future, because world demand has been gradually increasing, while
the production from copper sulfide ores in Zaire and Zambia, major producing countries, has decreased for political, economical
and technological reasons. The world demand for cobalt has surpassed the world mine production, and cobalt sales from the
National Defense Stockpile of the United States and exports from Russia and cobalt recovered from stockpiled intermediates
contributed to the supply in 1994. It is concluded, from a statistical point of view, that this trend of shortage and high

The fishery yield of Manila clams, Ruditapes philippinarum, increased considerably in the 1970s but has decreased rapidly since the middle 1980s on extensive intertidal sand flats in Ariake Sound (Kyushu, Japan). A survey conducted in 2004 on a 3.4-km2 sand flat located in the central part of the Sound (Shirakawa sand flat) revealed four dominant species: two thalassinidean shrimps (Upogebia major and Nihonotrypaea japonica), which are deep-reaching burrow dwellers with strong bioturbation activities, and two bivalves (Mactra veneriformis and R. philippinarum). All four species belong to a phytoplankton (diatom)-feeding guild. In the late 1970s, the Manila clam population prevailed in high densities over the entire sand flat, whereas its distribution was restricted to the lowest quarter of the shore in 2004. In contrast, the population sizes and zones of occurrence of the other phytoplankton feeders have expanded in the absence of R. philippinarum, perhaps an indication of competitive release. After establishment, effects of the thalassinidean shrimps on sediment stability appear to have further reduced clam abundances. Across the sand flat in 2004, wet weight population biomass estimates for N. japonica, U. major, M. veneriformis, and R. philippinarum (whole body for shrimps and soft tissue for bivalves) were 304, 111, 378, and 234 tonnes, respectively. Based on Manila clam fishery yield records from Shirakawa, the carrying capacity of the Shirakawa sand flat in the late 1970s was estimated to be two times greater than the sum value for the whole phytoplankton-feeding guild in 2004. It is hypothesized that (1) the amount of phytoplankton determines the carrying capacity for the benthic community on the Shirakawa sand flat, with both phytoplankton and benthic biomass at maxima in the late 1970s, and (2) the subsequent increases in competition for space have caused further declines in the Manila clam population biomass to approximately one-eighth of its past value. 相似文献

Stable carbon isotopic composition of ethane and propane over the western North Pacific and eastern Indian Ocean between 31°N
and 26°S was investigated from February through March 2004. The isotopic composition of ethane ranged from −28 to −18‰ and
showed a gradual increase from north to south. Conversely, that of propane was between −31 and −24‰; it showed no systematic
latitudinal variation. Investigation of the ethane/propane ratio indicates that ethane and propane that originated from northern
mid-latitude countries in the eastern part of Eurasia were both transported into the western North Pacific region. However,
the results of the isotopic analyses indicate the contribution of oceanic emission to the atmospheric propane during transport,
although that contribution can not be discerned for ethane. A ship based stationary observation conducted in the western equatorial
North Pacific showed that the isotopic composition of ethane varied from −25 to −19‰ and showed clear systematic diurnal variation:
propane ranged between −32 to −26‰ and no such isotopic diurnal signal was observed. The diurnal variation for ethane is explained
by entrainment of free tropospheric air, whereas the variation for propane was influenced by oceanic emissions as well as
the entrainment. The contribution of oceanic emissions to the atmospheric propane inventory was considered from our isotopic
observation. Isotopic composition of dissolved propane is estimated to be less than −38‰, and the contribution up to 79% was
calculated when the isotopic composition of dissolved propane is assumed to be −40‰. Our study demonstrates that isotopic
analysis can be more useful than ratio-based analysis to improve our present understanding of transport processes, especially
for impact of the oceanic emissions on the atmospheric distribution of low level C2–C5 non-methane hydrocarbons such as propane in the remote marine atmosphere. 相似文献

We analyzed Rb-Sr-Nd isotope ratios of mineral dust in total aerosol load collected with rainwater continuously from 1998 to 2006 at the summit of Mt. Sefuri, northern Kyushu, southwestern Japan. During this period, the total mass of the dust generally increased in late winter, peaked in early spring, and then decreased.87Sr/86Sr in atmospheric mineral dust varied from 0.7096 to 0.7180, and εNd(0)CHUR from −19.9 to −3.5. During heavy deposition periods, the dust had high 87Sr/86Sr isotope ratios and low to middle εNd(0)CHUR values, respectively. These compositions are comparable to those of sand and loess in arid areas of Northeast China, Takla Makan and Western Beijing. Such particles were transported by westerlies from those areas to northern Kyushu in winter and spring. In summer and autumn, the isotopic compositions of the dust varied greatly; however, during light deposition periods, the Sr isotope composition was low. In these seasons, the contributions to the dust from Japanese soils and volcanic ash, transported by southern winds, were relatively larger than in winter and spring because of decreased mineral dust particle transport from the continent. Nevertheless, fine sandy desert particles and loess in general accounted for most mineral dust deposition in northern Kyushu year-round, even in summer. Local soils derived from weathered granite and volcanic ash were minor components only.The net mass of water-insoluble inorganic matter in the collected mineral dust fluctuated from year-to-year; deposition on Mt. Sefuri was relatively large before 2001, decreased from 2002 to 2005, and increased greatly in spring 2006. Summary. A series of long-range explosion seismological experiments has been conducted by the use of specially designed ocean bottom seismographs (OBSs) in the Western Pacific. OBS studies of apparent velocity measurements by the use of natural earthquakes have also been made. The experiments have made clear that large-scale P -wave anisotropy exists in the entire thickness of the oceanic lithosphere. The existence of the large-scale anisotropy in the oceanic lithosphere has been demonstrated for the first time by seismic body-wave studies. Previously, anisotropy had been found only in the uppermost oceanic mantle in the Eastern Pacific.
The azimuth of the maximum velocity, 8.6 km s-1 , is about 155° clock-wise from north. The direction is perpendicular to the magnetic lineation of the region, however, the direction differs from the direction of the present plate motion by about 30°. So it appears that the anisotropy has been 'frozen' at least since the change of the plate motion that occurred 40 Myr ago. The frozen anisotropy should set important constraints on the mechanical properties of the lithosphere such as the viscosity and temperature of the lower lithosphere. 相似文献

A new method is proposed to compile 1 km grid data of monthly mean air temperature by dynamically downscaling general circulation model (GCM) data with a regional climate model (RCM). The downscaling method used is a technique referred to as the pseudoglobal warming method to reduce GCM bias. For the grid data, RCM data were corrected with data from an existing meteorological network. The correction model for the RCM bias was developed by stepwise multiple regression analysis using the difference in the monthly mean air temperatures between the observation and RCM output as a dependent variable and the geographical factors as independent variables. Our method corrected the RCM bias from 1.69°C to 0.58°C for the month of August in the 1990s (1990–1999). 相似文献
