Surface sediment from the coastal bays of Gwangyang and Masan in South Korea were analyzed for their contents and isotopic
values of organic carbon and total nitrogen. The sources and diagenetic alteration of organic matter were also assessed. Total
organic carbon varied from 0.22% to 3.48% (average = 1.40%, n = 75), and C/N ratios varied from 2.4 to 15.2 (average = 8.79,
n = 75). δ13Corg ranged from −19.92‰ to −25.86‰ (average = −21.21‰, n = 75), and δ15NTN ranged from 8.57‰ to 3.93‰ (average = 6.49‰, n = 75). Total organic carbon in both areas was associated with grain-size,
with higher contents in finer grained sediment. The high carbon content observed in Masan Bay sediment correlated with its
higher C/N ratio. δ13Corg and δ15NTN varied widely, attributable to various influences such as the input of terrestrial organic matter and diagenetic alteration.
The depleted δ13Corg and higher δ15NTN observed in the sediment of Gwangyang Bay reflected terrestrial supply, implying that biogeochemical processes, i.e. bacterial
degradation, were more active in Masan Bay sediment, which showed less depleted δ13Corg and higher δ15NTN than Gwangyang Bay sediment. δ15NTN was the more useful indicator of biogeochemical processes in the highly anoxic sediment. These results indicate that the
δ13Corg and δ15NTN of sedimentary organic matter in coastal bays can indicate the source and degree of diagenetic alteration of sedimentary

We have constructed synthetic solar spectra for the 2302-4800 cm−1 (2.08-4.34 μm) range, a spectral range where planetary objects mainly emit reflected sunlight, using ATMOS (Atmospheric Trace Molecule Spectroscopy)/Spacelab-3 and Atlas-3 spectra, of which resolution is 0.01 cm−1. We adopted Voigt line profiles for the modeling of line shapes based on an atlas of line identifications compiled by Geller [Geller, M., 1992. Key to Identification of Solar Features. A High-Resolution Atlas of the Infrared Spectrum of the Sun and the Earth Atmosphere from Space. NASA Reference Publ. 1224, vol. III. NASA, Washington, DC, pp. 1-22], who derived solar line positions and intensities from contaminated high-resolution solar spectra obtained by ATMOS/Spacelab-3. Because the ATMOS spectra in these wavelength ranges are compromised by absorption lines of molecules existing in Earth's high-altitude atmosphere and in the compartment of the spacecraft, the direct use of these high-resolution solar spectra has been inconvenient for the data reductions of planetary spectra. We compared the synthetic solar spectra with the ATMOS spectra, and obtained satisfactory fits for the majority of the solar lines with the exception of abnormal lines, which do not fit with Voigt line profiles. From the model fits, we were able to determine Voigt line parameters for the majority of solar lines; and we made a list of the abnormal lines. We also constructed telluric-line-free solar spectra by manually eliminating telluric lines from the ATMOS spectra and filling the gaps with adjacent continua. These synthetic solar spectra will be useful to eliminate solar continua from spectra of planetary objects to extract their own intrinsic spectral features. 相似文献

Surface wave dispersion is studied to obtain the 1-D average velocity structure of the crust in the Korean Peninsula by inverting
group- and phase-velocities jointly. Group velocities of short-period Rayleigh and Love waves are obtained from cross-correlations
of seismic noise. Multiple-filter analysis is used to extract the group velocities at periods between 0.5 and 20 s. Phase
velocities of Rayleigh waves in 10- and 50-s periods are obtained by applying the two-station method to teleseismic data.
Dispersion curves of all group and phase velocities are jointly inverted for the 1-D average model of the Korean Peninsula.
The resultant model from surface wave analysis can be used as an initial model for numerical modeling of observations of North
Korean events for a velocity model appropriated to the Korean Peninsula. The iterative process is focused especially on the
surface sedimentary layer in the numerical modeling. The final model, modified by numerical modeling from the initial model,
indicates that the crust shear wave velocity increases with depth from 2.16 km/s for a 2-km-thick surface sedimentary layer
to 3.79 km/s at a Moho depth of 33 km, and the upper mantle has a velocity of 4.70 km/s. 相似文献

Forest fires have adverse ecological, economic, and social impacts. In this light, the present research aimed, first, to construct a fire risk model using a GIS-based multi-criteria analysis and second, to derive a forest fire risk modeling strategy that alleviates the problem of inconsistency in the assigning of scores and weights to forest fire categories and layers. Third, the local-orientation effects and causes, which are relevant to the subjectivity problem, were investigated by comparing the risk scoring and weighting outcomes from Indian and Korean expert groups (IEG and KEG). Fourth, forest fire factors that can be considered regional and global also were investigated. Kolli Hills, India, was selected as the study area in this research. In the interests of alleviating the inconsistency problem, a weighting and scoring scheme based on the analytic hierarchy process was applied. The experiences from the existence of prevailing westerly winds, the most common forest types (i.e., in Korea: pine trees), and the different anthropogenic pressures between Korea and India resulted in the different scoring and weighting decisions of the two expert groups. Among the five fire risk factors, slope, road, and settlement can be considered to be global factors. On the other hand, forest cover and aspect are regional factors that can be more influenced by local environmental conditions. When considering the producer’s accuracy, the approach of the IEG together with the natural breaks thresholding method provided the best fire risk mapping result. On the other hand, the model from the IEG with equal interval provided the best result from the viewpoint of user’s accuracy and overall accuracy. Overall, this paper proposes a forest fire risk mapping procedure as basis for developing a global forest fire risk modeling in the future, where a series of standardized modeling steps and variables should be defined. 相似文献

The spent potliner (SPL) landfill liner system provides the primary attenuation mechanism that blocks the leaching of ferrocyanide. If the seepage occurs, however, the off-site leaching potential of ferrocyanide will be enhanced, resulting in contaminant dispersion. In this study, the adsorptive attenuation of ferrocyanide by two common lining materials (kaolinite and montmorillonite) was investigated under various seepage settings, such as influent concentration, liner thickness, and seepage velocity. The attenuation of ferrocyanide through both lining materials was obvious by lowering the maximum concentration and retarding the peak arrival time and was greater than that expected from batch data, likely due to the high mass-volume ratio under seepage condition. In comparison, seepage of ferrocyanide through lining material layer was retarded when (1) influent concentration was halved, (2) liner thickness was 1.5-fold, and (3) seepage velocity was halved. These experimental results strongly support the concentration-specific and rate-limited adsorptive attenuation of ferrocyanide by lining materials during the seepage process. An extended desorption front was observed for all seepage conditions; it was particularly more apparent for montmorillonite with a slow seepage velocity, further supporting that the release of adsorbed ferrocyanide from adsorbent is energetically hysteretic. Among the factors investigated in this study, the greatest retardation of ferrocyanide movement from seepage water was achieved upon doubling liner thickness. Therefore, for the design of a SPL landfill liner to minimize the leaching potential and thus the environmental risk of ferrocyanide, optimization of the liner thickness should be considered foremost. 相似文献

Cloud and precipitation parameterization schemes are evaluated, and their sensitivity to the method and/or parameters used to determine cloud physical processes is examined using a singlecolumn version of the Unified Model (SCUM). In the experiment for TWP-ICE, cloud fraction is overestimated (underestimated) in the upper (lower) troposphere due to the wet (dry) bias. The precipitation rate is well simulated during the active monsoon period, but overestimated during the suppressed monsoon and clear skies periods. In the moist convection scheme, trigger condition and entrainment process affect the lower tropospheric humidity through the impact on convective occurrence frequency and intensity, respectively. Strengthening the trigger condition and using the adaptive entrainment method alleviate the low-level dry bias. In the microphysics scheme, more large-scale precipitation is produced with prognostic rain, due to rain sedimentation considering vertical velocity of rain drop, than with diagnostic rain. Less ice/snow deposition with the prognostic two-ice category results in lower ice water content and upper-level cloud fraction than with the diagnostic splitting method for the twoice category. In the cloud macrophysics scheme, the prognostic cloud fraction and cloud/ice water content scheme produces a larger cloud fraction and more cloud/ice water content than the diagnostic scheme, mainly due to detrainment from moist convection (cloud source) that surpasses the effect of convective heating and drying (cloud sink). This affects temperature by influencing the radiative, convective, and microphysical processes. The experiment with combined modifications in cloud and precipitation schemes shows that interaction between modified moist convection and cloud macrophysics schemes results in more alleviation of the cold bias not only at the lower levels but also at the upper levels. 相似文献

To estimate the surface carbon flux in Asia and investigate the effect of the nesting domain on carbon flux analyses in Asia, two experiments with different nesting domains were conducted using the CarbonTracker developed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. CarbonTracker is an inverse modeling system that uses an ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF) to estimate surface carbon fluxes from surface CO2 observations. One experiment was conducted with a nesting domain centered in Asia and the other with a nesting domain centered in North America. Both experiments analyzed the surface carbon fluxes in Asia from 2001 to 2006. The results showed that prior surface carbon fluxes were underestimated in Asia compared with the optimized fluxes. The optimized biosphere fluxes of the two experiments exhibited roughly similar spatial patterns but different magnitudes. Weekly cumulative optimized fluxes showed more diverse patterns than the prior fluxes, indicating that more detailed flux analyses were conducted during the optimization. The nesting domain in Asia produced a detailed estimate of the surface carbon fluxes in Asia and exhibited better agreement with the CO2 observations. Finally, the simulated background atmospheric CO2 concentrations in the experiment with the nesting domain in Asia were more consistent with the observed CO2 concentrations than those in the experiment with the nesting domain in North America. The results of this study suggest that surface carbon fluxes in Asia can be estimated more accurately using an EnKF when the nesting domain is centered in Asian regions. 相似文献

Low cost lime‐based waste materials have recently been used to immobilize metals in contaminated soils. This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of oyster shells and eggshells as lime‐based waste materials on immobilization of cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) in contaminated soil, as well as their effects on metal availability to maize plants (Zea mays L.). Oyster shells and eggshells were applied to soils at 1 and 5% w/w, after which they were subject to 420 days of incubation. The toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) test was employed to determine the mobility of Cd and Pb in soils. The results showed that the addition of waste materials effectively reduced the metal mobility as indicated by the decrease in the concentration of TCLP‐extractable Cd and Pb, and this was mainly due to significant increases in soil pH (from 6.74 in untreated soil to 7.85–8.13 in treated soil). A sequential extraction indicated that the addition of such alkaline wastes induced a significant decline in the concentration of Cd in the exchangeable fraction (from 23.64% in untreated soil to 1.90–3.81% in treated soil), but it increased the concentration of Cd in the carbonate fraction (from 19.59% in untreated soil to 36.66–46.36% in treated soil). In the case of Pb, the exchangeable fraction was also reduced (from 0.67% in untreated soil to 0.00–0.01% in treated soil), and the fraction of Pb bound to carbonate was slightly increased (from 16.61% in untreated soil to 16.41–18.25% in treated soil). Phytoavailability tests indicated that the metal concentrations in the shoots of maize plant were reduced by 63.39–77.29% for Cd and by 47.34–75.95% for Pb in the amended soils, with no significant differences being observed for the amendment types and the application rates. Overall, these results indicate that oyster shells and eggshells can be used as low cost lime‐based amendments for immobilizing Cd and Pb in contaminated soils. 相似文献

Abstract An investigation is made of steady thermal convection of a Boussinesq fluid confined in a vertically-mounted rotating cylinder. The top and bottom endwall disks are thermal conductors at temperatures Tt and Tb with δT = Tt ? Tb >0. The vertical sidewall has a finite thermal conductance. A Newtonian heat flux condition is adopted at the sidewall. The Rayleigh number of the fluid system is large to render a boundary layer-type flow. Finite-difference numerical solutions to the full Navier-Stokes equations are obtained. The vertical motions within the buoyancy layer along the sidewall induce weak meridional flows in the interior. Because of the Coriolis acceleration, the meridional flows give rise to azimuthal flows relative to the rotating container. Strong vertical gradients of azimuthal flows exist in the regions near the endwalls. As the stratification effect increases, concentration of flow gradients in thin endwall boundary layers becomes more pronounced. The azimuthal flow field exhibits considerable horizontal gradients. The temperature field develops horizontal variations superposed on the dominant vertical distribution. As either the sidewall thermal conductance or the stratification effect decreases, the temperature distribution tends to the profile varying linearly with height. Comparisons of the sizes of the dynamic effects demonstrate that, in the bulk of flow field, the vertical shear of azimuthal velocity is supported by the horizontal temperature gradient, resulting in a thermal-wind relation. 相似文献
