Samples from a single outcrop of the Graenseso spherule layer, Midternaes, South Greenland, consist of a spherule‐bearing dolomixtite with matrix‐supported intraclasts up to 1 m in size. In addition to field observations, we performed mineralogical and whole rock geochemical analysis, including electron microprobe, neutron activation analysis, X‐ray fluorescence, and mass spectrometry of the horizon and the overlying and underlying strata. We show that the spherules are petrographically similar to those in the Zaonega spherule layer, Karelia, Russia. Our petrographic and chemical results are consistent with the previous suggestion that the Grænsesø layer correlates with the Zaonega layer, and it is possible that both layers are related to the Vredefort impact event. The samples containing spherules, as well as the overlying rocks, have elevated REEs compared to the underlying pre‐impact layer, suggestive of a new continental source of sediment that may be coincident with the impact event. Zircons separated from the lower part of the Grænsesø spherule layer display complex age patterns suggesting that they have genetically different origins based on distinctly different Th/U ratios. Crystallization ages of all groups are ≥ 2.8 Ga, with ~2.8 Ga representing a time of major crustal growth globally. Therefore, we cannot conclusively determine in this study if the zircons are locally derived or if they are transported with the ejecta. The spherule layer was deposited by a high‐energy, subaqueous debris flow, an origin that is consistent with the hypothesis that the layer was deposited by impact‐induced waves and/or currents.  相似文献

Cd, Zn and Cu levels were determined in sediments and Crangon crangon from 9 sites in the Severn Estuary/Bristol Channel during winter 1999. Metal levels in both shrimp and sediments varied significantly between sites and were related to proximity of input and/or sediment type. In the upper Estuary, Cd levels in shrimp were 100x higher than other reported values whereas sediment Cd contamination was comparable. It is suggested that high Cd levels in shrimp are due to the high inputs and enhanced bioavailability of metal during winter.  相似文献

The development of stratigraphic sequences has been demonstrated to be controlled by a set of factors including variations in subsidence, sediment input, eustatic sea level and physiography. Well and seismic data from the Jeanne d'Arc Basin, Grand Banks indicate that mid-Cretaceous tectonism controls at least three of these factors, namely subsidence, sediment input and physiography. North Atlantic rift tectonism was therefore the dominant factor in controlling the migration of coastal to shallow marine environments and the development of sequence stratigraphy in this basin during the mid-Cretaceous. The Avalon Formation respresents a mainly Barremian to Early Aptian regressive phase of clastic, marine to marginal marine sedimentation. This followed the deposition of a thick sequence of mainly marine limestones and shales of the Whiterose Formation above a mid-Valanginian sequence-bounding unconformity. The increased clastic input and northward progradation of coastal environments represented by the Avalon Formation occurred during uplift of a basement arch to the south with subsidence of the basin increasing to the north, accompanied by only relatively minor faulting. These features indicate that a period of epeirogenesis was initiated during the Barremian. Continuing uplift over an expanding area at the southern end of the basin is interpreted to have resulted in the development of an angular unconformity with incised valleys. This mid-Aptian unconformity defines the top of the Whiterose/Avalon sequence. Initiation of brittle fracturing of the sedimentary package and underlying basement (i.e. rifting) in mid-Aptian times resulted in rapid fault-controlled subsidence and fragmentation of the Jeanne d'Arc Basin. This great increase in subsidence rate caused retrogradation of coastal environments across the previously developed sequence-bounding unconformity, despite continuing high rates of sediment input from the uplifted basin margins. The transgressive, siliciclastic Ben Nevis Formation comprises two separate but related facies associations. A locally preserved basal association represents interfingering back-barrier environments and is herein defined as the Gambo Member. An upper, ubiquitous facies association comprises tidal-inlet channel, shoreface and lower shoreface/offshore transition sandstones. This upper facies association onlapped marine ravinement diastems above the laterally equivalent back-barrier facies. The rapid fault-controlled subsidence and high sediment input rate of this mid-Aptian to late Albian rift period resulted in the accumulation and preservation of very thick shoreface sandstones. The transgressive sandstones were buried by laterally equivalent offshore shales of the Nautilus Formation. Flooding of the basin margins induced by the onset of thermal subsidence in latest Albian or early Cenomanian times marks the top of the Ben Nevis/Nautilus syn-rift sequence.  相似文献

Reliable dating is an essential element of palaeoseismological studies, yet whilst a suite of geochronological methods can now provide late Quaternary age control it remains very difficult to date modern events (i.e., those occurring within the last 150 years). This is significant because the starting point for many palaeoseismological investigations is a modern surface-rupturing event, whose geological effects need to be disentangled in trench stratigraphies from palaeoseismic ruptures. Two dating methods which, in combination, can provide robust dating control in recently deposited sediments are the 210Pb and 137Cs dating methods. Here, we test the applicability of using 210Pb and 137Cs to date colluvial sediments exposed in three trenches excavated across an earthquake fault—the Eliki fault, Gulf of Corinth, Greece—which ruptured in an earthquake in 1861. The 210Pb and 137Cs profiles observed in these colluvial sequences are relatively erratic due to the mixed nature of the sediments, i.e., their deposition in an environment where the supply of slope sediments is driven by seasonal rainfall, causing non-uniform sediment accretion and sediment reworking. In one trench, however, 210Pb dating, corroborated by 137Cs dating, indicates that a proposed post-1861 surface colluvial unit has been deposited over the period 1950 AD–present (at a rate of ca. 9 mm/year), and overlies a significantly older unit (>120 years old). The dating control provided here by 210Pb and 137Cs dating corroborates the published interpretation of the trench stratigraphy, and refines the 14C-based estimated dates for the upper unit. At two other trenches 210Pb and 137Cs dating only provided minimum ages (based on the presence or absence of 210Pbexcess and 137Cs). Such approximate ages, however, may still useful in corroborating interpretations made using the trench stratigraphy, or, at sites which have long earthquake recurrence intervals, determining which earthquake event was responsible for a particular bed offset.  相似文献

The influence of riparian woodland on stream temperature, micro‐climate and energy exchange was investigated over seven calendar years. Continuous data were collected from two reaches of the Girnock Burn (a tributary of the Aberdeenshire Dee, Scotland) with contrasting land use characteristics: (1) semi‐natural riparian forest and (2) open moorland. In the moorland reach, wind speed and energy fluxes (especially net radiation, latent heat and sensible heat) varied considerably between years because of variable riparian micro‐climate coupled strongly to prevailing meteorological conditions. In the forested reach, riparian vegetation sheltered the stream from meteorological conditions that produced a moderated micro‐climate and thus energy exchange conditions, which were relatively stable between years. Net energy gains (losses) in spring and summer (autumn and winter) were typically greater in the moorland than the forest. However, when particularly high latent heat loss or low net radiation gain occurred in the moorland, net energy gain (loss) was less than that in the forest during the spring and summer (autumn and winter) months. Spring and summer water temperature was typically cooler in the forest and characterised by less inter‐annual variability due to reduced, more inter‐annually stable energy gain in the forested reach. The effect of riparian vegetation on autumn and winter water temperature dynamics was less clear because of the confounding effects of reach‐scale inflows of thermally stable groundwater in the moorland reach, which strongly influenced the local heat budget. These findings provide new insights as to the hydrometeorological conditions under which semi‐natural riparian forest may be effective in mitigating river thermal variability, notably peaks, under present and future climates. © 2014 The Authors. Blast damage to the tops of coal seams due to incorrect blast standoff distances is a serious issue, costing the industry in Australia about one open‐cut mine for every ten operating mines. The current approach for mapping coal‐seam tops is through drilling and pierce‐point logging. To provide appropriate depth control with accuracy of ±0.2 m for blast hole drilling, it is typically necessary to drill deep reconnaissance boreholes on a 50 m x 50 m grid well in advance of overburden removal. Pierce‐point mapping is expensive and can be inaccurate, particularly when the seam is disturbed by rolls, faults, and other obstacles.Numerical modelling and prototype‐field testing are used in this paper to demonstrate the feasibility of two seismic‐while‐drilling‐based approaches for predicting the approach to the top of coal during blast hole drilling: (i) reverse “walk‐away” vertical seismic profiling recording, in which the drill bit vibration provides the source signal and the geophones are planted on the surface near the drill rig, and (ii) in‐seam seismic recording, in which channel waves, driven by the coupling to the coal of the seismic signal emitted by the approaching drill bit, are guided by the seam to geophones located within the seam in nearby or remote boreholes.  相似文献
