A survey of Recent basaltic rocks in Iceland is presented. The basalts are classified into three groups: tholeiites, transitional alkali basalts and alkali olivine basalts. The basalts can be divided into petrological regions where the composition of lavas seem to have been fairly constant throughout postglacial and possibly late-Pleistocene time. The tholeiites delineate the crest region of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge as it transects Iceland, and the mildly alkali olivine basalts and the transitional alkali basalts characterize the flank volcanic zones. Tholeiitic and alkalic diffrentiated rocks appear to have a distribution in accordance with the basalt distribution pattern. There is some correlation between the chemistry of the zones and the crustal structure of Iceland. Areal discharge of volcanic rocks varies consistently between the petrological regions being highest in the tholeiite regions. The total output of volcanic rocks along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge in the Iceland area reaches maximum in middle Iceland. 相似文献

The Gulf of Bothnia hosted a variety of palaeo‐glaciodynamic environments throughout the growth and decay of the last Fennoscandian Ice Sheet, from the main ice‐sheet divide to a major corridor of marine‐ and lacustrine‐based deglaciation. Ice streaming through the Bothnian and Baltic basins has been widely assumed, and the damming and drainage of the huge proglacial Baltic Ice Lake has been implicated in major regional and hemispheric climate changes. However, the dynamics of palaeo‐ice flow and retreat in this large marine sector have until now been inferred only indirectly, from terrestrial, peripheral evidence. Recent acquisition of high‐resolution multibeam bathymetry opens these basins up, for the first time, to direct investigation of their glacial footprint and palaeo‐ice sheet behaviour. Here we report on a rich glacial landform record: in particular, a palaeo‐ice stream pathway, abundant traces of high subglacial meltwater volumes, and widespread basal crevasse squeeze ridges. The Bothnian Sea ice stream is a narrow flow corridor that was directed southward through the basin to a terminal zone in the south‐central Bothnian Sea. It was activated after initial margin retreat across the Åland sill and into the Bothnian basin, and the exclusive association of the ice‐stream pathway with crevasse squeeze ridges leads us to interpret a short‐lived stream event, under high extension, followed by rapid crevasse‐triggered break‐up. We link this event with a c. 150‐year ice‐rafted debris signal in peripheral varved records, at c. 10.67 cal. ka BP. Furthermore, the extensive glacifluvial system throughout the Bothnian Sea calls for considerable input of surface meltwater. We interpret strongly atmospherically driven retreat of this marine‐based ice‐sheet sector. 相似文献

Sorption of Ni(II) onto chlorite surfaces was studied as a function of pH (5–10), ionic strength (0.01–0.5 M) and Ni concentration (10−8–10−6 M) in an Ar atmosphere using batch sorption with radioactive 63Ni as tracer. Such studies are important since Ni(II) is one of the major activation products in spent nuclear fuel and sorption data on minerals such as chlorite are lacking. The sorption of Ni(II) onto chlorite was dependent on pH but not ionic strength, which indicates that the process primarily comprises sorption by surface complexation. The maximum sorption was at pH ∼ 8 (Kd = ∼10−3 cm3/g). Desorption studies over a period of 1–2 weeks involving replacement of the aqueous solution indicated a low degree of desorption. The acid–base properties of the chlorite mineral were determined by titration and described using a non-electrostatic surface complexation model in FITEQL. A 2-pK NEM model and three surface complexes, Chl_OHNi2+, Chl_OHNi(OH)+ and Chl_OHNi(OH)2, gave the best fit to the sorption results using FITEQL. The high Kd values and low degree of desorption observed indicate that under expected groundwater conditions, a large fraction of Ni(II) that is potentially leachable from spent nuclear fuel may be prevented from migrating by sorption onto chlorite surfaces. 相似文献

Gridding heterogeneous bathymetric data sets with stacked continuous curvature splines in tension 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Gridding heterogeneous bathymetric data sets for the compilation of Digital bathymetric models (DBMs), poses specific problems
when there are extreme variations in source data density. This requires gridding routines capable of subsampling high-resolution
source data while preserving as much as possible of the small details, at the same time as interpolating in areas with sparse
data without generating gridding artifacts. A frequently used gridding method generalizes bicubic spline interpolation and
is known as continuous curvature splines in tension. This method is further enhanced in this article in order to specifically
handle heterogeneous bathymetric source data. Our method constructs the final grid through stacking several surfaces of different
resolutions, each generated using the splines in tension algorithm. With this approach, the gridding resolution is locally
adjusted to the density of the source data set: Areas with high-resolution data are gridded at higher resolution than areas
with sparse source data. In comparison with some of the most widely used gridding methods, our approach yields superior DBMs
based on heterogeneous bathymetric data sets with regard to preserving small bathymetric details in the high-resolution source
data, while minimizing interpolation artifacts in the sparsely data constrained regions. Common problems such as artifacts
from ship tracklines are suppressed. Even if our stacked continuous curvature splines in tension gridding algorithm has been
specifically designed to construct DBMs from heterogeneous bathymetric source data, it may be used to compile regular grids
from other geoscientific measurements. 相似文献

The western Svalbard continental margin contains thick sediment sequences with areas known to contain gas hydrates. Together with a dynamic tectonic environment, this makes the region prone to submarine slides. This paper presents results from geophysical mapping of the deepest part of the high Arctic environment, the Molloy Hole. The mapping includes multibeam bathymetry, acoustic backscatter and sub-bottom profiling. The geophysical data reveal seabed features indicative of sediment transport and larger-scale mass wasting. The large slide scar is here referred to as the Molloy Slide. It is located adjacent to the prominent Molloy Hole and Ridge system. The slide is estimated to have transported >65 km3 of sediments over the deep axial valley of the Molloy Ridge, and further into the Molloy Hole. A unique feature of this slide is that, although its run-out distance is relatively short (<5 km), it extends over an enormous vertical depth (>2,000 m) as a result of its position in a complex bathymetric setting. The slide was most likely triggered by seismic activity caused by seafloor spreading processes along the adjacent Molloy Ridge. However, gas-hydrate destabilization may also have played a role in the ensuing slide event. 相似文献

Post-glacial tholeiitic basalts from the western Reykjanes Peninsula range from picrite basalts (oldest) to olivine tholeiites to tholeiites (youngest). In this sequence there are large systematic variations in rare earth element (REE) abundances (La/Sm normalized to chondrites ranges from 0.33 in the picrite basalts to 1.25 in the fissure tholeiites) and corresponding variations in 143Nd/144Nd (0.51317 in the picrite basalts to 0.51299 in the fissure tholeiites). The large viaration in 143Nd/144Nd, more than one-third the total range observed in most ocean islands and mid-ocean ridge basalts (MORB), is accompanied by only a small variation in 87Sr/86Sr (0.7031–0.7032). These 87Sr/86Sr ratios are within the range of other Icelandic tholeiites, and distinct from those of MORB.We conclude that the mantle beneath the Reykjanes Peninsula is heterogeneous with respect to relative REE abundances and 143Nd/144Nd ratios. On a time-averaged basis all parts of this mantle show evidence of relative depletion in light REE. Though parts of this mantle have REE abundances and Nd isotope ratios similar to the mantle source of “normal” MORB, 87Sr/86Sr is distinctly higher. Unlike previous studies we find no evidence for chondritic relative REE abundances in the mantle beneath the Reykjanes Peninsula; in fact, the data require significant chemical heterogeneity in the hypothesized mantle plume beneath Iceland, as well as lateral mantle heterogeneity from the Reykjanes Ridge to the Reykjanes Peninsula. The compositional range of the Reykjanes Peninsula basalts is consistent with mixing of magmas produced by different degrees of melting in different parts of the heterogeneous mantle source beneath the Reykjanes Peninsula. 相似文献

Multibeam bathymetric and sediment profiler evidence for ice grounding on the Chukchi Borderland, Arctic Ocean 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

Multibeam bathymetry and 3.5-kHz sub-bottom profiler data collected from the US icebreaker Healy in 2003 provide convincing evidence for grounded ice on the Chukchi Borderland off the northern Alaskan margin, Arctic Ocean. The data show parallel, glacially induced seafloor scours, or grooves, and intervening ridges that reach widths of 1000 m (rim to rim) and as much as 40 m relief. Following previous authors, we refer to these features as “megascale glacial lineations (MSGLs).” Additional support for ice grounding is apparent from stratigraphic unconformities, interpreted to have been caused by ice-induced erosion. Most likely, the observed sea-floor features represent evidence for massive ice-shelf grounding. The general ESE/WNW direction of the MSGLs, together with sediment, evidently bulldozed off the Chukchi Plateau, that is mapped on the western (Siberian) side of the plateau, suggests ice flow from the Canada Basin side of Chukchi Borderland. Two separate generations of glacially derived MSGLs are identified on the Chukchi Borderland from the Healy geophysical data. The deepest and oldest extensive MSGLs appear to be draped by sediments less than 5 m thick, whereas no sediment drape can be distinguished within the resolution of the sub-bottom profiles on the younger generation. 相似文献

In 1979, the General Bathymetric Chart of the Oceans (GEBCO) published Sheet 5.17 in the Fifth Edition of its series of global
bathymetric maps. Sheet 5.17 covered the northern polar region above 64° N, and was for long the authoritative portrayal of
Arctic bathymetry. The GEBCO compilation team had access to an extremely sparse sounding database from the central Arctic
Ocean, due to the difficulty of mapping in this permanently ice covered region. In the past decade, there has been a substantial
increase in the database of central Arctic Ocean bathymetry, due to the declassification of sounding data collected by US
and British Navy nuclear submarines, and to the capability of modern icebreakers to measure ocean depths in heavy ice conditions.
From these data sets, evidence has mounted to indicate that many of the smaller (and some larger) bathymetric features of
Sheet 5.17 were poorly or wrongly defined. Within the framework of the project to construct the International Bathymetric
Chart of the Arctic Ocean (IBCAO), all available historic and modern data sets were compiled to create a digital bathymetric
model. In this paper, we compare both generally and in detail the contents of GEBCO Sheet 5.17 and version 1.0 of IBCAO, two
bathymetric portrayals that were created more than 20 years apart. The results should be helpful in the analysis and assessment
of previously published studies that were based on GEBCO Sheet 5.17.

The sensitivity of the Late Saalian (140?ka) and LGM (21?ka) Eurasian ice sheets to sea surface conditions 总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0

This work focuses on the Late Saalian (140?ka) Eurasian ice sheets?? surface mass balance (SMB) sensitivity to changes in sea surface temperatures (SST). An Atmospheric General Circulation Model (AGCM), forced with two preexisting Last Glacial Maximum (LGM, 21?ka) SST reconstructions, is used to compute climate at 140 and 21?ka (reference glaciation). Contrary to the LGM, the ablation almost stopped at 140?ka due to the climatic cooling effect from the large ice sheet topography. Late Saalian SST are simulated using an AGCM coupled with a mixed layer ocean. Compared to the LGM, these 140?ka SST show an inter-hemispheric asymmetry caused by the larger ice-albedo feedback, cooling climate. The resulting Late Saalian ice sheet SMB is smaller due to the extensive simulated sea ice reducing the precipitation. In conclusion, SST are important for the stability and growth of the Late Saalian Eurasian ice sheet. 相似文献

High‐resolution chirp sonar profiling in the northeastern Skagerrak shows acoustically stratified sediments draping a rough‐surfaced substratum. A 32 metre long sediment core retrieved from the survey area encompasses the entire Holocene and latest Pleistocene. The uppermost seismo‐acoustic units in the chirp profiles represent Holocene marine sediments. The lowermost unit is interpreted as ice‐proximal glacial‐marine sediments rapidly deposited during the last deglaciation. The end of ice‐proximal sedimentation is marked by a strong reflector, interpreted to have been formed during latest Pleistocene time as a consequence of rapid ice retreat and drastically lowered sedimentation rate. The subsequent distal glacial‐marine sediments were deposited with initially high sedimentation rates caused by an isostatic rebound‐associated sea‐level fall. Based on correlation between the core and the chirp sonar profiles using measured sediment physical properties and AMS 14C dating, we propose a revised position for the Pleistocene/Holocene boundary in the seismo‐acoustic stratigraphy of the investigated area.
