The geographic distribution, vigor, virulence, and agricultural impact of weeds, insects, and plant pathogens will be affected by climatic changes accompanying the global "greenhouse effect." Weed/crop competitive interactions, particularly among species differing in photosynthetic pathway (C3 v C4), may be altered, with the C3 species favored by increasing CO2. Physiological and biochemical changes induced in host crop plants by rising CO2 may affect feeding patterns of pest insects. Compilation of climatic thresholds for phenological development of pest insects reveals the potential for shifts in pest behavior induced by global warming and other climatic change. Generation times may be reduced, enabling more rapid population increases to occur. Poleward migration may be accelerated during the crop season. The epidemiology of plant diseases also will be altered. Prediction of disease outbreaks will be more difficult in periods of rapidly changing climate and unstable weather. Environmental instability and increased incidence of extreme weather may reduce the effectiveness of pesticides on targeted pests or result in more injury to non-target organisms. Biological control may be affected either negatively or positively. Overall, the challenge to agriculture from pests probably will increase. 相似文献

The value of a formally defined Anthropocene for geomorphologists is discussed. Human impacts have been diachronistic, multifaceted and episodic, as demonstrated by the record of alluvial deposition in the UK. Rather than boxing time into discrete eras or periods, modern research uses calendar dates and multiple dating techniques to explore co‐trajectories for a range of human impacts. Despite the value of ‘The Anthropocene’ as an informal concept and as a prompt to useful debate, arriving at a single, generally acceptable formal definition is impractical, and has some disadvantages. We summarize the physical input and assumptions commonly adopted in modern standard solar models that also produce good agreement with solar oscillation frequencies. We discuss two motivations for considering non-standard models: the solar neutrino problem and surface lithium abundance problem. We begin to explore the potential for mixed core models to solve the neutrino problem, and compare the structure, neutrino flux, and oscillation frequency predictions for several models in which the inner 25% of the radius is homogenized, taking into account the effects of non-local equilibrium abundances of 3He. The results for the neutrino flux and helioseismic predictions are far from satisfactory, but such models have the potential to reduce the predicted 7Be/8B neutrino flux ratio, and further studies are warranted. Finally, we discuss how much the neutrino problem can be alleviated in the framework of the standard solar model by using reaction rates, abundances and neutrino capture cross-sections at the limits of their uncertainties, while still satisfying the constraints of helioseismology. 相似文献

Abstract— We report Rb-Sr analyses of phosphates from nine ordinary chondrites, more than doubling the number of meteorites for which such data are available. Ordinary chondrite phosphates characteristically have Rb/Sr ratios sufficiently low to permit accurate identification of initial 87Sr/86Sr, which is generally (but not in all cases) found to be significantly higher than the more primitive initial 87Sr/86Sr ratios inferred for carbonaceous chondrite refractory inclusions (ALL), basaltic achondrites (BABI), or bulk ordinary chondrites (in the ALL-BABI range). Such elevation of initial 87Sr/86Sr is generally considered to reflect isotopic redistribution during metamorphism, and with a model for Rb/Sr in this environment can lead to an inferred metamorphic timescale. For whole rock Rb/Sr the inferred formation intervals are typically tens of Ma (range nil to > 100 Ma). There is no evident relation between initial Sr elevation and metamorphic grade. There is not a clear difference in initial Sr effects between H and L chondrites; LL chondrites show much less (if any) elevation of initial Sr, but data are available for only two meteorites. For the first time it is possible to make a detailed comparison of initial Sr and I-Xe chronologies for several meteorites: these two potential metamorphic chronometers conspicuously fail to agree, in terms of both age and sequence of ages. A comparably definitive assessment of the comparison between initial Sr and Pb-Pb chronologies is not yet possible, but presently available data suggest that these two approaches to chondrite chronology also fail to agree. Without a correlation with metamorphic grade, or detailed agreement with an independent chronometer, it remains unclear whether initial 87Sr/86Sr in phosphates can be translated into a reliable chronometer for ordinary chondrite metamorphism, at least within simple interpretational frameworks. 相似文献

Modified equinoctial elements are introduced which are suitable for perturbation analysis of all kinds of orbit. Equations of motion in Lagrangian and Gaussian forms are derived. Identities connecting the partial derivatives of the disturbing function with respect to equinoctial elements are established. Twenty-seven samples of matrix and clast materials from Boulder 1 at Station 2, Apollo 17 have been analyzed for major and trace elements as part of the study of this boulder by Consortium Indomitabile. Both unusual and common types of material have been characterized. Gray and black competent breccia (GCBx and BCBx) and anorthositic breccia (AnBx) have compositions which are common at the Apollo 17 site and were common at the site of boulder formation. Light friable breccias (LFBx) have compositions which are not found at the Apollo 17 site other than in the boulder. Pigeonite basalt is a new type of lunar rock and has characteristics that would be expected of a highland volcanic rock. It is associated with LFBx material, and like LFBx material it is exotic to the Apollo 17 site. Coarse norite is an old primitive rock which is no longer (if ever) found as millimeter fragments at the Apollo 17 site. It was, however, present as millimeter fragments associated with GCBx and BCBx materials at the site and time of boulder formation. Therefore the boulder-forming process combined materials from at least two different localities or vertical strata; at least one of these (LFBx) has not been previously sampled and analyzed. 相似文献

plants, presumably due to their relatively longer contact with creek water and associated phytoplankton, and their closer
proximity to marsh sediments with associated benthic microalgae, both recruitment sources for epiphytes. Dead plants left
standing from the previous year’s growth cycle had higher epiphytic biomass than living plants, which occurred mostly in late
spring through fall. Epiphytic biomass was highest in the winter (mean of 1.77 mg chla (m2 marsh)−1) and lowest in the summer (mean of 0.34 mg chla (m2 marsh)−1). Because phytoplankton andSpartina production are lowest in the winter, the results emphasize the relative importance of epiphytes to growth of herbivores in

Forsmark in Sweden has been proposed as the site of a geological repository for spent high-level nuclear fuel, to be located at a depth of approximately 470 m in fractured crystalline rock. The safety assessment for the repository has required a multi-disciplinary approach to evaluate the impact of hydrogeological and hydrogeochemical conditions close to the repository and in a wider regional context. Assessing the consequences of potential radionuclide releases requires quantitative site-specific information concerning the details of groundwater flow on the scale of individual waste canister locations (1–10 m) as well as details of groundwater flow and composition on the scale of groundwater pathways between the facility and the surface (500 m to 5 km). The purpose of this article is to provide an illustration of multi-scale modeling techniques and the results obtained when combining aspects of local-scale flows in fractures around a potential contaminant source with regional-scale groundwater flow and transport subject to natural evolution of the system. The approach set out is novel, as it incorporates both different scales of model and different levels of detail, combining discrete fracture network and equivalent continuous porous medium representations of fractured bedrock. 相似文献

On 2004 August 15, we observed a fast (shorter than 10 h) state transition in the bright black hole transient GX 339–4 simultaneously with Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer ( RXTE ) and INTEGRAL . This transition was evident both in timing and spectral properties. Combining the data from the Proportional Counter Array (PCA), the High-Energy X-ray Timing Experiment (HEXTE) and the Imager on Board the INTEGRAL Satellite (IBIS), we obtained good quality broad-band (3–200 keV) energy spectra before and after the transition. These spectra indicate that the hard component steepened. Also, the high-energy cut-off that was present at ∼70 keV before the transition was not detected after the transition. This is the first time that an accurate determination of the broad-band spectrum across such a transition has been measured on a short time-scale. It shows that, although some spectral parameters do not change abruptly through the transition, the high-energy cut-off increases/disappears rather fast. These results constitute a benchmark on which to test theoretical models for the production of the hard component in these systems. 相似文献
