Abstract Nekoma volcano forms part of the arc axis volcanic array of the North-eastern Honshu arc, Japan, which is commonly characterized by medium-K lava suites. However, Nekoma is exceptional because many of its lavas are low-K. This anomaly has been a matter of debate. Nekoma was active from 1.1 to 0.35 Ma. The volcano consists of thick andesite flows and domes associated with block and ash flow deposits produced during lava dome formation. A horseshoe-shaped collapse caldera was formed at the summit and small lava domes extruded into the caldera. Stratigraphy, published K–Ar ages, and tephrochronology define three stages of volcanic activity, about 1.1 Ma (Stage 1), 0.8–0.6 Ma (Stage 2) and 0.45–0.35 Ma (Stage 3; post caldera stage). Low-K andesites occur in all stages. Extremely low-K andesite was also associated in Stage 2 and medium-K andesite was dominant in Stage 3. In general, lavas changed from low-K to medium-K after caldera formation. Geochemical study of the Nekoma lavas shows that both low-K and medium-K lavas are isotopically similar and were derived from a common source. Adatara and Azuma volcanoes, which lie close to Nekoma, also have both low-K and medium-K andesites. However, Sr isotope ratios or temporal-spatial variations in K-level lava classification vary between the three centers. Comparisons of K suites and Sr isotope ratios with frontal arc volcanoes in North-east–Honshu suggest source heterogeneity existed in both medium- and low-K suites. The K contents of lavas and their Sr isotopes are not simply related. This requires re-examination of models for chemical variation of andesites in arcs.  相似文献

Linear Rossby wave dispersion relationships suggest that Jupiter’s Great Red Spot (GRS) is a baroclinic structure embedded in a barotropic shearing zonal flow. Quasi-geostrophic (QG) two-layer simulations support the theory, as long as an infinitely deep zonal flow is assumed. However, once a finite depth of the lower layer is assumed, a self-interaction of the baroclinic eddy component produces a barotropic radiating field, so that the GRS-like eddy can no longer remain compact. Compactness is recovered by explicitly introducing a deep dynamics of the interior for the lower layer, instead of the shallow QG formulation. An implication of the result is a strong coupling of the GRS to a convectively active interior.Paper presented to the NP Symposia of the 1991 Wiesbaden EGS Assembly on “Nonlinear processes in Geophysics”  相似文献

Noble gases were measured in bulk samples of the C3V chondrites Grosnaja, Vigarano, and Leoville, and in HF,HCl-insoluble residues before and after etching with HNO3. The residues were characterized by INAA and SEM. Gas components were determined, directly or by subtraction, for the following fractions: HF,HCl-solubles (?98% of the meteorite), ‘sphase Q’, a poorly characterized trace mineral that is insoluble in HCl-HF but soluble in HNO3, and an insoluble residue, consisting of ferrichromite, carbonaceous matter, and spinel.Bulk meteorites show some correlation of the noble-gas pattern with McSween's subclasses: two ‘oxidized’ C3V's—Allende (LEWIS et al, 1975) and Grosnaja— have lower Ar/Xe but higher Ne/Xe ratios than the ‘reduced’ C3V's—Vigarano and Leoville—which are transitional to LL3's and C3O chondrites in both respects. An HCl-soluble mineral of high Ar/Xr ratio seems to be responsible. In other respects, the 3 C3V's of this study resemble Allende, with only moderate differences. Phase Q contains most of the Ar, Kr, Xe, but only small amounts of Ne; the etched residues contain planetary Ne (Ne20Ne22 ? 8.5) and the controversial CCFXe component, enriched in the heavy Xe isotopes (Xe136Xe132 ? 0.4–0.5). The CCFXe is accompanied by an ‘L-Xe’ component that is enriched in the light Xe isotopes. The proportion of the two is virtually constant in C3V's. as in all other C-chondrites. in contrast to the ~ 2-fold variation in ordinary chondrites.C3V's have systematically higher Xe136Xe132 ratios, and hence higher ratios of CCFXe to planetary Xe, than do other chondrite classes. This may reflect some peculiarity in their formation conditions, favoring uptake of CCFXe.  相似文献

A periodic brightness variation of about 6 days was found by applying maximum entropy method to the visual brightness of Comet Bradfield 1987s. This activity was clearly apparent in January of 1988. No other outstanding period was detected. This suggests that the period of the rotation or precession of the nucleus is about 6 days.  相似文献

The Miocene Kaikomagatake pluton is one of the Neogene granitoid plutons exposed in the Izu Collision Zone, which is where the juvenile Izu-Bonin oceanic arc is colliding against the mature Honshu arc. The pluton intrudes into the Cretaceous to Paleogene Shimanto accretionary complex of the Honshu arc along the Itoigawa-Shizuoka Tectonic Line, which is the collisional boundary between the two arcs. The pluton consists of hornblende–biotite granodiorite and biotite monzogranite, and has SiO2 contents of 68–75 wt%. It has high-K series compositions, and its incompatible element abundances are comparable to the average upper continental crust. Major and trace element compositions of the pluton show well-defined chemical trends. The trends can be interpreted with a crystal fractionation model involving the removal of plagioclase, biotite, hornblende, quartz, apatite, and zircon from a potential parent magma with a composition of ~68 wt% SiO2. The Sr isotopic compositions, together with the partial melting modeling results, suggest that the parent magma is derived by ~53% melting of a hybrid lower crustal source comprising ~30% Shimanto metasedimentary rocks of the Honshu arc and ~70% K-enriched basaltic rocks of the Izu-Bonin rear-arc region. Together with previous studies on the Izu Collision Zone granitoid plutons, the results of this study suggest that the chemical diversity within the parental magmas of the granitoid plutons reflects the chemical variation of basaltic sources (i.e., across-arc chemical variation in the Izu-Bonin arc), as well as a variable contribution of the metasedimentary component in the lower crustal source regions. In addition, the petrogenetic models of the Izu Collision Zone granitoid plutons collectively suggest that the contribution of the metasedimentary component is required to produce granitoid magma with compositions comparable to the average upper continental crust. The Izu Collision Zone plutons provide an exceptional example of the transformation of a juvenile oceanic arc into mature continental crust.  相似文献

A model of two-current-loop collisions is presented to explain the impulsive nature of solar flares. From MHD equations considering the gravity and resistivity effects we find self-consistent expressions and a set of equations governing the behavior of all physical quantities just after magnetic reconnection has taken place. Numerical simulations have revealed that the most important parameters of the problem are the plasma and the ratio of initial values of pressure gradient in the longitudinal and radial directions. Thus, the low plasma case during aY-type interaction (initial longitudinal pressure gradient is comparable with initial radial pressure gradient) shows a rapid pinch and simultaneous enhancement of all physical quantities, including the electric field components, which are important for high-energy particle acceleration. However, an increase of the plasma causes a weakening of the pinch effect and a decrease of extreme values of all physical quantities. On the other hand, for anX-type collision (initial longitudinal pressure gradient is much greater than initial radial pressure gradient), which is able to provide a jet, the increase of the plasma causes a high velocity jet. As for aI-type collision (initial longitudinal pressure gradient is much less than initial radial pressure gradient) it shows neither jet production nor very strong enhancement of physical quantities. We also consider direct and oblique collisions, taking into account both cases of partial and complete reconnection.  相似文献

A 3-D particle simulation of excitation of whistler waves driven by an electron temperature anisotropy (T > T ) is presented. Results show that whistler waves can have appreciable growth driven by the anisotropy. The maximum intensity of the excited whistler waves increases as a quadratic function of the anisotropy. Due to the presence of a threshold, one needs a relatively large electron temperature anisotropy above threshold to generate large-amplitude whistler waves. The average amplitude of turbulence in the context of whistler waves is up to as large as about 1% of the ambient magnetic field when T /T . The total energy density of the whistler turbulence is adequate for production of relativistic electrons in solar flares through stochastic acceleration.  相似文献

We present a model for high-energy solar flare explosions driven by 3-dimensional X-type current loop coalescence. The 3-dimensional X-type current loop coalescence, where two crossed flux-tubes interact at one point, is a fundamentally new process as compared to the 1-D and 2-D cases studied earlier. This process is studied by a first-order approach of the relevant variables near the point of coalescence; it appears to yield reliable information in a sufficiently large area around this point. It is shown that, following a strong plasma collapse due to the pinch effect, a point-like plasma explosion can be driven while fast magnetosonic shock waves can also be excited. We found that the conditions in the area producing the remarkable flare bursts of 21 May, 1984 were indeed such that the many flare spikes could have been due to 3-D explosive X-type current loop coalescence. We also show, by studying the conditions of shock formation in a gamma ray flare, that the time delay of -rays from the impulsive phase could be the time needed for the shock formation in the flaring region. We draw some general conclusions on the question why certain flares do emit -rays in the MeV energy range, and why other, apparently important and energetic flares, do not. We accentuate the fact that a well-developed high-energy flare has three phases of particle acceleration.  相似文献
