A detailed relative sea-level (RSL) record was constructed for the time interval 600–1600 AD, using basal peat to track sea level and containing 16 sea-level index points that capture ~60 cm of RSL rise. The study area is in the Mississippi Delta where the spring tidal range is ~0.47 m, the impact of ocean currents on sea-surface topography is limited, and crustal motions are well constrained. Age control was obtained by AMS 14C dating and most ages represent weighted means of two subsamples. Sample elevations were determined by combining differential GPS measurements with optical surveying. All index points were plotted as error boxes using 2σ confidence intervals for the ages, plus all vertical errors involved in sampling and surveying, as well as the indicative range of the samples. A striking clustering of sea-level index points between ~1000 and ~1200 AD suggests a possible acceleration in the rate of RSL rise. Removal of the long-term trend (0.60 mm yr?1) allows for the possibility of a sea-level oscillation with a maximum amplitude of ~55 cm. However, given the size of the error boxes the possibility that oscillations did not occur cannot be entirely ruled out. Comparison of the new RSL record with various proxy climate records suggests that sea level in this area may have responded to hemispheric temperature changes, including the Medieval Warm Period and the Little Ice Age. However, given the error margins associated with this reconstruction, it is stressed that this causal mechanism is tentative and requires corroboration by high-resolution sea-level reconstructions elsewhere. 相似文献

Centennial–millennial dynamics of tropical salt marsh vegetation are documented in the pollen record from marine core MD03-2622, Cariaco Basin, Venezuela, which spans the glacial period between 63 and 29 ka. Five rapid and abrupt expansions of salt marsh vegetation are linked with North Atlantic Heinrich events (HEs). Within each event, a recurrent pattern – starting with species of Chenopodiaceae, followed by grasses, and subsequently by Cyperaceae species – suggests a successional process that is determined by the close relationship between sea-level and community dynamics. The salt tolerant Chenopodiaceae, at the base of each sequence, indicate hypersaline intertidal environments, which were most likely promoted by extremely dry atmospheric conditions. Rapid sea-level rise characterizes the onset of HE stadials, causing erosion of marsh sediments, and continued recruitment of pioneer species (Chenopodiaceae), which are the only ones capable of tolerating the rapid rate of disturbance. Once, as sea-level drops or as rise decelerates, marsh plants are able to trap and stabilize sediments, favouring the establishment of more competitive species (graminoids). The increment of marsh height as a result of autochthonous sediment accumulation reduces the extent of hypersaline environments, and allows the establishment of mesohaline species. These results add to the scarce knowledge on tropical salt marsh ecosystems, and provide independent paleoclimatic evidence on sea-level changes occurring simultaneously with Antarctica climate variations. 相似文献

We study tidal synchronization and orbit circularization in a minimal model that takes into account only the essential ingredients
of tidal deformation and dissipation in the secondary body. In previous work we introduced the model (Escribano et al. in
Phys. Rev. E, 78:036216, 2008); here we investigate in depth the complex dynamics that can arise from this simplest model of tidal synchronization and
orbit circularization. We model an extended secondary body of mass m by two point masses of mass m/2 connected with a damped spring. This composite body moves in the gravitational field of a primary of mass M ≫ m located at the origin. In this simplest case oscillation and rotation of the secondary are assumed to take place in the plane
of the Keplerian orbit. The gravitational interactions of both point masses with the primary are taken into account, but that
between the point masses is neglected. We perform a Taylor expansion on the exact equations of motion to isolate and identify
the different effects of tidal interactions. We compare both sets of equations and study the applicability of the approximations,
in the presence of chaos. We introduce the resonance function as a resource to identify resonant states. The approximate equations
of motion can account for both synchronization into the 1:1 spin-orbit resonance and the circularization of the orbit as the
only true asymptotic attractors, together with the existence of relatively long-lived metastable orbits with the secondary

A new method for estimating shallow landslide susceptibility by combining Geographical Information System (GIS), nonparametric
kernel density estimation and logistic regression is described. Specifically, a logistic regression is applied to predict
the spatial distribution by estimating the probability of occurrence of a landslide in a 16 km2 area. For this purpose, a GIS is employed to gather the relevant sample information connected with the landslides. The advantages
of pre-processing the explanatory variables by nonparametric density estimation (for continuous variables) and a reclassification
(for categorical/discrete ones) are discussed. The pre-processing leads to new explanatory variables, namely, some functions
which measure the favourability of occurrence of a landslide. The resulting model correctly classifies 98.55% of the inventaried
landslides and 89.80% of the landscape surface without instabilities. New data about recent shallow landslides were collected
in order to validate the model, and 92.20% of them are also correctly classified. The results support the methodology and
the extrapolation of the model to the whole study area (278 km2) in order to obtain susceptibility maps. 相似文献

Wild mushrooms are recognized as important non-wood forest products in mountainous ecosystems, but their real potential for generating rural economies has not been fully evaluated due to the difficulties in obtaining reliable productivity data, minimizing their true potential as contributor to rural economies. Mushroom yield models based on large data series from Pinus forest ecosystems in the region of Catalonia(Spain), combined with data from the Spanish National Forest Inventory allow us to estimate the potential mushroom productivity by forest ecosystems. The results of 24,500 tons/yr of mushrooms of which 16,300 tons are classified as edible and 7,900 tons are commonly marketed demonstrate the importance of mushroom productions in Catalonian pine forests, mostly located in mountainous areas where the development of agricultural activities is limited. Economic mushroom value is estimated at 48 million € for the edible mushroom and 32 million € for those corresponding to marketable yields, confirming the potential of this non-wood forest product. These production results and corresponding economic values provide a basis for the incorporation of wild mushrooms as significant non-wood forest products in the development of forest policies in mountainous areas. 相似文献
