Three main groups of plutonic nodules are present in the LesserAntilles arc and are interpreted as (a) phenocryst clusters,(b) metamorphosed wallrock xenoliths and (c) cumulate texturedxenoliths. Large cumulate blocks display felsic-mafic layering,slump structures and auto-intrusive features. The majority ofspecimens are ad- and heteradcumulates with fewer ortho- andcrescumulates. Interstitial scoria and glass are present ina variety of samples. Plagioclase, amphibole, cino- and orthopyroxene,olivine, magnetite, biotite, ilmenite, quartz and apatite arepresent in various proportions in individual blocks. Plagioclaseand amphibole are modally predominant. Significant variationalong the arc is displayed in the rarity of orthopyroxene andabundance of amphibole in the southern islands compared withthe common presence of two pyroxenes in the northern islands. Plagioclase varies from An100–36 with very low orthoclasecomponent, and usually precedes amphibole in a given crystallizationsequence. Only on Grenada are plagioclase-free blocks present.Olivine is restricted to assemblages where coexisting plagioclaseis more calcic than An89 and its composition range is Fo90–59.Clinopyroxene is predominantly calcic augite and cinopyroxene,olivine and plagioclase all coexist stably with amphibole. Ageneral trend of decreasing Ca content in clinopyroxene fromsouth to north in the arc is present. Orthopyroxene ranges from En73–49 and is most common inassemblages where the coexisting plagioclase is more sodic thanAn83 Coexisting pyroxenes define temperatures in the range 800–1050?C. Amphibole compositions include pargasite, magnesiohastingsite,magnesio-hornblende and tschermakitic hornblende. The K contentof the amphiboles increases from north to south in the samesense as the general tholeiitic-calcalkalic-alkalic variationof parental magmas. Magnetite is the dominant spinel phase but ferrian chromiteand chromian magnetite are present in some Grenada cumulatesand pleonaste is found in rare St. Kitts samples. Ilmenite ispresent in blocks from several islands; coexisting Fe-Ti oxidesdefine a temperature range of 710?-950 ?C at of 15.5 to 10.0 bars. Biotite, quartz and apatiteare restricted to evolve cumulate types. Some modification of interstitial scoria/glass compositionsfrom equilibrium melts has occurred in the majority of samples,but general similarity with erupted lava types is importantevidence for the cognate relationship of the cumulate assemblages.The role of H2O is crucial in determining the calcic natureof island arc plutonic plagioclase when compared with relativelydry, layered tholeiitic plutons. Some modal and chemical featuresof cumulate-lava comparisons suggest plagioclase flotation maybe significant. A variety of thermodynamic calculations indicate temperaturesand pressures of crystallization in the range 850–1050?C, 4–10 kb. No evidence exists for systematic along-arcvariations in these parameters. Standard amphibole crystallinesolution models give unsatisfactory results for calculations. Some distinctive contrasts between cumulate and phenocryst modesare present. The abundance of amphibole in equilibrium withbasaltic melts in the plutonic situation compared with its rarityin lavas is striking. Plagioclase coexisting with a given meltis more anorthitic in the plutonic than the phenocryst mode. Least squares fractionation tests demonstrate the possibilityof relating basalt-andesite-dacite suites by fractional crystallizationof the cumulus phases. Neodymium isotopic analyses have been measured on nine ophiolites and four orogenic lherzolites. εNd varies from +12 to +3 in the ophiolites and from +18 to +2 in the orogenic lherzolites. The majority of the analyses plot on a εNdSr correlation line as defined by Nd and Sr isotopic analyses of oceanic basalts. However, certain ophiolitic and lherzolitic samples exhibit high87Sr/86Sr ratios and as such lie to the right of the correlation line towards seawater compositions.From these data one can postulate several origins for ophiolites including that of mid-ocean ridges and ocean islands. If the orogenic lherzolites are interpreted as representative of the mantle occurring below active ridges a more complex model is required involving mantle heterogeneity and multi-episodic chemical fractionation starting prior to 2 Ga ago.  相似文献

The study of glass inclusions inside mantle minerals provides direct information about the chemistry of naturally occurring mantle-derived melts and the fine-scale complexity of the melting process responsible for their genesis. Minerals in a spinel lherzolite nodule from Grande Comore island contain glass inclusions which, after homogenization by heating, exhibit a continuous suite of chemical compositions clearly distinct from that of the host basanitic lava. The compositions range from silicic, with nepheline–olivine normative, 64 wt% SiO2 and 11 wt% alkali oxides, to almost basaltic, with quartz normative, 50 wt% SiO2 and 1–2 wt% alkali oxides. Within a single mineral phase, olivine, the inferred primary melt composition varies from 54 to 64 wt% SiO2 for MgO content ranging from 8 to 0.8 wt%. An experimental study of the glass and fluid inclusions indicates that trapped melts represent liquids that are in equilibrium with their host phases at moderate temperature and pressure (T≈1230°C and P≈1.0 Gpa for melts trapped in olivine). Quantitative modelling of the compositional trends defined in the suite shows that all of the glasses are part of a cogenetic set of melts formed by fractional melting of spinel lherzolite, with F varying between 0.2 and 5%. The initial highly silicic, alkali-rich melts preserved in Mg-rich olivine become richer in FeO, MgO, CaO and Cr2O3 and poorer in SiO2, K2O, Na2O, Al2O3 and Cl with increasing melt fractions, evolving toward the basaltic melts found in clinopyroxene. These results confirm the connection between glass inclusions inside mantle minerals and partial mantle melts, and indicate that primary melts with SiO2 >60 wt%, alkali oxides >11%, FeO <1 wt% and MgO <1 wt% are generated during incipient melting of spinel peridotite. The composition of the primary melts is inferred to be dependent on pressure, and to reflect both the speciation of dissolved CO2 and the effect of alkali oxides on the silica activity coefficient in the melt. At pressures around 1 GPa, low-degree melts are characterized by alkali and silica-rich compositions, with a limited effect of dissolved CO2 and a decreased silica activity coefficient caused by the presence of alkali oxides, whereas at higher pressures alkali oxides form complexes with carbonates and, consequently, alkali-rich silica-poor melts will be generated.  相似文献

This article investigates whether the European Union-Mauritania fisheries agreement, which allocates part of the Europe's financial contribution to the conservation of marine ecosystems located within the Banc d’Arguin National Park, can be regarded as a payment for ecosystem service. A framework for qualification as such payment scheme was established based on an extensive literature review. The criteria identified for the qualification as a payment to ecosystem service pertain to: (1) the definition of the ecosystem service(s) involved; (2) the mechanism involved by the payment; and (3) the nature of the transaction. Interviews with local beneficiaries and subsequent data analysis led to the conclusion that this mechanism could be regarded as a payment to ecosystem service and so, through the European Union-Mauritania Fisheries agreement, the European Union were investing to protect local fish resources that could be exploited by its fishing fleet. This agreement, involving the first International Payment to Ecosystem Service of this kind, marks an important step towards better consideration of marine conservation in international public policy and foreign fishing policy in particular. However, this payment is small when compared to revenues generated through the exploitation of developing countries’ fishing grounds by fishing countries. Nevertheless it opens the door for more detailed applications of payment to ecosystem service schemes to other ecosystems contexts, and can provide a useful alternative source of financing of marine biodiversity conservation.  相似文献

A glaciological program has been undertaken since 1991 on Zongo glacier in Bolivia (6000–4850 m asl, 2.4 km2, 16°S). This program involves mass balance measurements, hydrological studies and energy balance investigations. On outer-tropical glaciers, melting and snow accumulation are both maximum in the wet season (austral summer), whereas the dry season (winter) is a period of low ablation. Errors on each term of the glaciological (stakes, snow-pits and integration method of the measurements) and hydrological (precipitation, discharge and runoff coefficient of free ice areas) methods are investigated to estimate the overall accuracy of the mass balance measurements. The hydrological budget is less than the glaciological one (mean difference: 60 cm w.e. per year), but both methods reproduce similar inter-annual variations. Errors in assessment of evaporation or water storage inside the glacier cannot explain the discrepancy. Errors using the glaciological method are large (around ± 40 cm w.e. per year), but no bias can explain the departure from the hydrological balance. Errors on discharge measurements are small and the uncertainty on the runoff coefficient has a minor effect on the mass balance. We concluded that hydrological budgets are too low due to the catch deficiency of rain gauges and absence of precipitation measurements at high altitudes, emphasizing the difficulty to assess snowfall distribution in high mountainous basins.  相似文献

Hydrographic structure of the water column, dissolved nutrient concentrations and the distribution of suspended particulate matter were recorded from CDT measurements and Niskin bottles sampling on the continental slope of the Bay of Biscay and on the axis of Capbreton canyon. Ascorbate extraction was applied here for the first time on marine suspended particles to determine the content of reactive Fe- and Mn-oxides, and P associated with Fe-oxides. Hydrographic structure of the south-eastern part of the Bay of Biscay did not change during the last three decades. Particulate organic carbon (POC) contents dropped strongly with depth, showing that organic matter mineralization was efficient in the water column. Organic matter mineralized in the water column had a Redfield N:P ratio. POC percent of particles collected at depth were higher during a bloom period, suggesting that some new organic matter reached the bottom. Contents of Fe and Mn extracted with the ascorbate leaching solution showed that suspended particles originated from the Gironde estuary, one of the major sources of particles in the Bay of Biscay. Intermediate and deeper nepheloid layers occurred in the Capbreton canyon. Particles of nepheloid layers were enriched in Mn- and Fe-oxides because they originated from resuspension of surface sediment.  相似文献

We report on the variation in energy reserves of individual C5 copepodites of Calanus finmarchicus from the Newfoundland continental shelf and the Labrador Sea collected from surface and overwintering (or bottom) depths prior to, during and after the expected timing of the onset of diapause. Overall, the trend was for a decreasing average prosome length as the year progressed for all locations although the decline was smallest in the Labrador Sea and greatest in the deep waters of the continental shelf. The size of the oil sac was closely linked to the weight of the copepodite but the form of this relationship showed substantial variations with depth and season. We show a clear increase in the relative oil sac volume for C. finmarchicus between late spring and late summer, by which time some animals had descended to diapause depths. The progressive decrease in oil sac volume of animals sampled at depth in the Labrador Sea between September and December suggests a significant loss of energy reserves during diapause. From the distribution of volumes and body sizes in December we estimate that 23–53% of individuals would not be able to meet the energetic cost of moulting and early gonad development. Overall, some of our observations appear to invalidate earlier hypotheses concerning the governing role of lipids in the life history of C. finmarchicus. However, assessment of the factors that influence entry into dormancy should be based on the relative probabilities of alternative strategies for successful reproduction (e.g. entering dormancy vs. continuing into a second generation).  相似文献
