Association between semitransparent cirrus (STC) and tropospheric dynamics during the two contrasting seasons (Summer-monsoon and Winter) is studied using lidar and MST radar observations at Gadanki (13.5°N, 79.2°E) along with data from Geo-stationary satellite (KALPANA-1). The tropical tropopause layer (TTL) is found to be very conducive for the formation of STC. For those thicker STCs forming within TTL, the cloud top remains mostly steady with the top of the TTL, while the cloud base varies significantly in accordance with the altitude extent of tropospheric convective outflow. Based on depolarization characteristics of STCs (from lidar) along with regional distribution of tropospheric clouds derived from satellite data, altitude profile of horizontal wind, wind field at 150 hPa and air mass back trajectories, it can be reasonably inferred that, while the multi-layered and highly structured STCs during the monsoon period originate mostly from the deep convections, the sub-visual/ultra thin STCs during winter could mostly be of in situ origin.  相似文献

A large aerosol plume with optical depth exceeding 0.7 engulfs most parts of the Arabian Sea during the Asian summer monsoon season. Based on Micro Pulse Lidar observations during the June–September period of 2008 and 2009, the present study depicts, for the first time, the existence of an elevated dust layer occurring very frequently in the altitude band of 1–3.5 km over the west coast of peninsular India with relatively large values of linear depolarization ratio (δL). Large values of δL indicate the dominance of significantly non-spherical aerosols. The aerosol optical depth of this layer (0.2) is comparable to that of the entire atmospheric column during dust-free days. Back-trajectory analysis clearly shows the advection of airmass from the arid regions of Arabia and the west Arabian Sea, through the altitude region centered around 3 km. This is in contrast to the airmass below 1 km originating from the pristine Indian Ocean region which contains relatively spherical aerosols of marine origin with δL generally <0.05.  相似文献

A geochemical soil sampling survey undertaken at Tumallpalle uranium mineralized zone Cuddapah district, has confirmed the presence of uranium anomalies in soils. Bulk soil samples were collected at every 20 m along the traverse from approximately 30 cm below the surface and were assayed for uranium by x-ray fluorescence (XRF) and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The uranium anomalies detected by the insitu radiometric survey show a correlation with the helium highs. The soil gas helium studies have aided in delineating the subsurface extension of the deposit. This study endeavors for an integration of different techniques in a known area which could probably aid in delineating uranium zones for optimal exploitation in the future exploration programmes.  相似文献

Seasonal snow cover is a vital natural resource in the Himalaya. Monitoring of the areal extent of seasonal snow cover is important for both climatological studies as well as hydrological applications. In the present paper, snow cover monitoring was carried out to evaluate the region-wise accumulation and ablation pattern of snow cover in Pir Panjal and Shamshawari ranges of Kashmir valley. The study was carried out for the winter period between November and April of 2004–05, 2005–06 and 2006–07, using multi-temporal WiFS sensor data of IRS-1C/1D satellites. The study shows reduction in the areal extent of seasonal snow cover and rising trend of maximum temperature in three winters for the entire Kashmir valley. This has been validated with 20 years (1988–89 to 2007–08) climatic conditions prevailed in both ranges of Kashmir valley. Region-wise study shows the spatial and temporal variability in seasonal snow cover within Kashmir valley. Advance melting was observed in Banihal and Naugam/Tangdhar regions than Gurez and Machhal regions. Different geographical parameters of these regions were studied to evaluate the influence on snow cover and it was observed that altitude and position of region with respect to mountain range are the deciding factors for retaining the seasonal snow cover for longer duration. Such region-wise study of snow cover monitoring, can provide vital inputs for planning the hydropower projects, development in habitat areas, recreational and strategic planning in the region.  相似文献

The spatio-temporal changes in sedimentation rate along the continental margin of the monsoon-dominated eastern Arabian Sea during the last 24 kyr have been estimated from a compilation of 58 radiocarbon dated cores, in order to understand the effect of glacial-interglacial variation on sedimentation. The sedimentation rate has been computed for four-time slices, viz. the last glacial maximum, glacial-interglacial transition, early Holocene and late Holocene. We report that the average sedimentation rate in the slope to the abyssal region of the entire eastern Arabian Sea, although higher during the Holocene as compared with that during the last glacial maximum and glacial-interglacial transition, does not significantly vary during all four-time intervals. The sedimentation rate during any particular time interval, however, varies from core to core, thus indicating zonal changes. We report four zones of relatively high sedimentation rate, viz. the northeastern Arabian Sea, the region off the Gulf of Khambhat, the region off Goa and Mangalore, and off the southern tip of India. We suggest that a complex interaction of land-ocean-atmospheric processes controlled sedimentation rate in the eastern Arabian Sea during the last 24 kyr in such a way that the average sedimentation rate does not vary significantly, even during highly contrasting climatic conditions.  相似文献

Anthropogenic activities are likely to cause global warming. Global warming will affect marine productivityand thus food availability for marine organisms. Both the seawater temperature and food availability affect benthicforaminifera, the most abundant marine calcareous microorganisms. Therefore, a laboratory culture experiment wasconducted on Cymbaloporetta plana to understand the coupled effect of temperature(25°C, 27°C, 30°C) and food(102±5,203±9, 305±14, 407±18, 508±23 diatom cells). At all temperatures, growth increased with increase in food. The specimenssubjected to 27°C temperature attained the maximum growth and those subjected to 25°C were the smallest. All specimensfed with 508±23 cells reproduced, 0 irrespective of temperature. Of all the specimens without food, 40% at 27°C and 20% at25°C reproduced, whereas specimens subjected to 30°C did not reproduce. The 100% rate of reproduction at 27°C suggeststhat it is the optimum temperature for growth and reproduction. All the specimens at 30°C and without additional food,died, whereas at 25°C and 27°C, the mortality rate was 80% and 60%, respectively. The limited growth and reproductionwith decreasing food clearly indicates that food availability also controls the growth and reproduction of shallow waterbenthic foraminifer C. plana. Therefore, warming coupled with decreasing productivity is likely to severely affect thegrowth and abundance of shallow water benthic foraminifera.  相似文献

Temporal variation in abundance and mean proloculus diameter of the benthic foraminiferal speciesEpistominella exigua has been reconstructed over the last ∼ 50,000 yr BP, from a core collected from the distal Bay of Bengal fan, to assess its potential application in palaeoceanographic reconstruction studies. The down-core variation shows significant change in abundance ofE. exigua during the last ∼ 50,000 yr BP. In view of the present day abundance of this species from areas with strong seasonal organic matter supply, we conclude that at ∼ 7, ∼ 22, ∼ 33 and ∼ 46kyr BP, strong seasonality prevailed in the distal Bay of Bengal fan, probably indicating either strong or prolonged north-east monsoon or weakened south-west monsoon. For the first time, a strong correlation is observed in abundance and mean proloculus diameter ofE. exigua. Based on coherent variation in mean proloculus diameter and abundance, it is postulated that mean proloculus diameter can also be used to infer increased seasonality in organic matter production, thus variation in strength or duration of monsoon. Thus, this study establishes that the down-core variation in the abundance and mean proloculus diameter ofEpistominella exigua can be used to infer past climatic variations from the distal Bay of Bengal fan.  相似文献

A multi-thematic analysis based on different physical factors has been adopted to generate integrated maps on erosion proneness as well as on critical slope under a GIS platform for terrain evaluation. This spatial data on erosion proneness has demonstrated that 17.62 km2 area, out of the 140 km2 in the catchment zone, needs careful attention for ecorestoration. In the critical slope map four land stability classes have been demarcated. The area represented as Unstable and Moderately-stable is found to be important for slope stability problems. Temporal change in the drainage network over a period of four decades as well as the extent of loss in the perennial status of tributaries have been recorded to evaluate the landform changes. A catchment treatment plan has also been suggested.  相似文献

Fracture and fault networks are conduits that facilitate groundwater movement in hard-rock terrains. Soil-gas helium emanometry has been utilized in Wailapally watershed, near Hyderabad in southern India, for the detection of fracture and fault zones in a granite basement terrain having a thin regolith. Based on satellite imagery and geologic mapping, three sites were selected for detailed investigation. High spatial resolution soil-gas samples were collected at every one meter at a depth of >1.5m along 100m long profiles (3 in number). In addition, deep shear-wave images were also obtained using the multichannel analysis of surface waves. The study clearly indicates several soil-gas helium anomalies (above 200 ppb) along the profiles, where the shear-wave velocity images also show many near-surface vertical low velocity zones. We thus interpret that the soil-gas helium anomalous zones and the vertical low-velocity zones are probable traces of fault/fracture zones that could be efficient natural recharge zones and potential groundwater conduits. The result obtained from this study demonstrates the efficacy of an integrated approach of soil-gas helium and the seismic methods for mapping groundwater resource zones in granite/gneiss provinces.  相似文献

We report GPS measurements of continuous observations from the multi-parametric geophysical observatory (MPGO) at Ghuttu, Garhwal Lesser Himalaya. Other than the evidence of secular motion depicting strain accumulation due to locking of the underneath seismically active detachment, measurements at Ghuttu show annual variation of ±4 mm on horizontal component. Such variations are more prominent in the north coordinate and do not directly correlate with the meteorological parameters such as variations in rainfall, water table, and atmospheric pressure measured at the MPGO observatory. These variations are also not the artefact of data processing and network. They correlate with the water load storage in the Ganga plains, with minimum in displacement coinciding with the maximum storage of water in Ganga plains immediately after the monsoon and vice versa. Such variations also appear to cause annual variation in the low-magnitude earthquake frequency in the Himalayan region, being relatively more in the winter period.  相似文献
