The maximum entropy method (MEM) of image reconstructtion is discussed in the context of incomplete Fourier information (as in aperture synthesis). Several current viewpoints on the conceptual foundation of the method are analysed and found to be unsatisfactory. It is concluded that the MEM is a form of model-fitting, the model being a non-linear transform of a band-limited function. A whole family of ’entropies’ can be constructed to give reconstructions which (a) are individually unique, (b) have sharpened peaks and (c) have flattened baselines. The widely discussed 1nB and - B1nB forms of the entropy are particular cases and lead to Lorentzian and Gaussian shaped peaks respectively. However, they hardly exhaust the possibilities-for example, B1/2 is equally good. The two essential features of peak sharpening and baseline flattening are shown to depend on a parameter which can be controlled by adding a suitable constant to the zero spacing correlation ρ00. This process, called FLOATing, effectively tames much of the unphysical behaviour noted in earlier studies of the MEM. A numerical scheme for obtaining the MEM reconstruction is described. This incorporates the FLOAT feature and uses the fast Fourier transform (FFT), requiring about a hundred FFTs for convergence. Using a model brightness distribution, the MEM reconstructions obtained for different entropies and different values of the resolution parameter are compared. The results substantiate the theoretically deduced properties of the MEM. To allow for noise in the data, the least-squares approach has been widely used. It is shown that this method is biased since it leads to deterministic residuals which do not have a Gaussian distribution. It is suggested that fitting the noisy data exactly has the advantage of being unbiased even though the noise appears in the final map. A comparison of the strengths and weaknesses of the MEM and CLEAN suggests that the MEM already has a useful role to play in image reconstruction.  相似文献

We have measured the visible and infrared spectra and thermal behavior of the moleculebis-pyridal-magnesium-tetrabenz-porphyrin, the molecule proposed as the carrier of the diffuse interstellar bands. Of the six band coincidences reported by F. M. Johnson, only one, 4430 Å, occurs in our experiments. This coincidence requires a special environment, not likely in interstellar space. The infrared spectrum does not support Johnson's vibrational scheme. Our spectroscopic and thermal measurements contradict the hypothesis that this molecule causes the diffuse bands.  相似文献

Results from new observations of pulsars using the Ooty Radio Telescope(ORT) are used for investigating the structure of the Local InterstellarMedium (LISM) and the nature of the plasma turbulence spectrum in theInterstellar Medium (ISM). The observations show anomalous scintillationtowards several nearby pulsars, and these are modelled in terms oflarge-scale spatial inhomogeneities in the distribution of plasma densityfluctuations in the LISM. A 3-component model, where the Solar neighborhoodis surrounded by a shell of enhanced plasma turbulence, is proposed for theLISM. The inferred scattering structure is strikingly similar to the LocalBubble. The nature of the plasma turbulence spectrum is found to be Kolmogorov-like in the spatial scale range 106 m to 1011 m,and there is evidence for excess power at larger spatial scales.  相似文献

δD and δ13C analyses of cellulose nitrate from two modern Irish oak trees that form part of the 7400 year long chronology were carried out, covering a period of 123 years (1861–1983 A.D.) with a 5 year resolution so as to assess the potential of this long chronology for retrieval of palaeoenvironmental data. One of the trees (Q5293) showed significant correlations of δD, δ13 C and ring width with mean annual temperatures as recorded at the Armagh weather station nearby and the mean fall temperatures of Central England. The other tree (Q5296) did not exhibit any significant climatic correlations either because it grew utilizing a nearby permanent source of ground water or because the intra-ring isotopic variations in Irish oak are significant enough to mask the climatic signal. Whilst our results have given a positive indication of the usefulness of these trees for palaeoenvironmental information, more trees need to be analysed to confirm our findings. Even though one of the trees did not exhibit climatic correlations, both trees show a significant positive correlation of δ13C and a negative correlation of δD with ring width variations. Furthermore, two tree samples that grew during the 1620s B.C., when a volcano is thought to have erupted on the Aegean island of Santorini, show increased δD and decreased δ13C for one to two decades following the eruption, though the magnitudes of change seem to vary with site and trees. We have proposed a possible mechanism based on tree phenology to explain both the above effects.  相似文献

A regional tree ring-width index chronology prepared from various tree core samples of the western Himalaya has been analyzed in relation to climate fluctuations. The correlation analysis of tree ring chronology shows significant positive correlations with regional rainfall and standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI) and negative correlations with temperature and vapor pressure (VP) during the spring season. The correlation coefficients (CCs) of tree ring-width index chronology with rainfall, temperature, SPEI, and VP during 1901–1990 are 0.50, −0.49, 0.65, and −0.51, respectively. All CCs are significant at 0.1% level. The highly significant CCs between tree ring-width index chronology and SPEI indicate that tree growth over the western Himalaya is more sensitive to soil moisture availability than rainfall, whereas the rising VP is found to have a significant moisture stress condition to tree growth by accelerating the evapotranspiration, which is not conducive for the development of tree growth in the region. So, based on the strong association between tree ring-width index chronology and SPEI; the reconstructions of SPEI and VP are developed back to AD 1861, that show the long period of dryness during 1936–1963.  相似文献

Extrapolating energy fluxes between the ground surface and the atmospheric boundary layer from point-based measurements to spatially explicit landscape estimation is critical to understand and quantify the energy balance components and exchanges in the hydrosphere, atmosphere, and biosphere. This information is difficult to quantify and are often lacking. Using a Landsat image (acquired on 5 August 2004), the flux measurements from three eddy covariance flux towers (a 1987 burn, a 1999 burn, and an unburned control site) and a customized satellite-based surface energy balance model of Mapping Evapotranspiration at High Resolution with Internalized Calibration (METRIC), we estimated net radiation, sensible heat flux (H), latent heat flux (LE), and soil heat flux (G) for the boreal Yukon River Basin of Interior Alaska. The model requires user selection of two extreme conditions present within the image area to calibrate and anchor the sensible flux output. One is the “hot” condition which refers to a bare soil condition with specified residual evaporation rates. Another one is the “cold” condition which refers to a fully transpiring vegetation such as full-cover agricultural crops. We selected one bare field as the “hot” condition while we explored three different scenarios for the “cold” pixel because of the absence of larger expanses of agricultural fields within the image area. For this application over boreal forest, selecting agricultural fields whose evapotranspiration was assumed to be 1.05 times the alfalfa-based reference evapotranspiration as the “cold” pixel could result in large errors. Selecting an unburned flux tower site as the “cold” pixel could achieve acceptable results, but uncertainties remain about the energy balance closure of the flux towers. We found that METRIC performs reasonably well in partitioning energy fluxes in a boreal landscape.  相似文献

Viral nervous necrosis(VNN)has emerged to become a major problem in the culture of larval and juvenile marine fish worldwide.Bioactive phytochemicals isolated from commonly available medicinal plants are often screened for their efficacy in controlling fish viral diseases.Occurrence of newer viral strains and resistance to existing antiviral drugs are problems currently as-sociated with treatment of VNN,which necessitates looking for alternate sources for effective antiviral drugs.The aim of the present study was to screen antiviral potential of gymnemagenol(C30H50O4)previously extracted from leaves of Gymnema sylvestre.The fish nodavirus,grouper nervous necrosis virus(GNNV)in infected Sahul Indian Grouper Eye(SIGE)cell lines were used to study the antiviral activity of gymnemagenol under in vitro conditions.The susceptibility of the virus to gymnemagenol was confirmed by measuring the viral titre(TCID50 mL?1)in virus-infected SIGE cells every 24 h.Gymnemagenol at 20 μg mL?1 inhibited the prolifera-tion of GNNV to 53% at the end of the 6th d by inhibiting the proliferation of GNNV-infected SIGE cells.The viable SIGE cells were reduced to 47% as determined by 3-(4,5-Dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide(MTT)assay.The viral titre(TCID50 mL?1)was also reduced to log 2.8 at the end of the 7th d in gymnemagenol-treated SIGE cells after inoculated with GNNV when compared to untreated control SIGE cell viral titre(log 4.1).Based on our results it can be concluded that gymnemagenol could be used as an antiviral agent against GNNV infection.  相似文献
