Currumbin Creek on the Australian Gold Coast is a wave-dominated tidal inlet which exhibits a particularly active morphology. The recent history of Currumbin Creek entrance has seen rapid growth of the entrance for access to the ocean by fishermen, as a world class surfing site, and as a recreational area. Before the construction of two groynes in the 70's, Currumbin Creek entrance was highly variable in terms of inlet location and sand bar characteristics due to a cyclical behaviour of spit migration. Nowadays, the entrance is stabilised. However, natural processes continue with the entrance infilling causing flood and navigation issues, resulting in a regular dredging program to maintain an open entrance and for regular beach nourishment plans.  相似文献

Experiments are described in which the threshold conditions for sediment entrainment are measured for uniform and mixed sand beds beneath both steady and combined steady/oscillatory flows. Derived critical shear stresses are compared with the mixed bed entrainment model of Wiberg & Smith (1987). As predicted by the model, coarser grains within a sand mixture are entrained at lower bed shear stresses than progressively finer grains. Entrainment occurs generally at lower shear stresses than predicted by the model, especially under unidirectional flows. This may be the result of grains resting in unusually unstable positions during the experiments because the beds are ‘unworked’ at the start of the experiments. The model of Wiberg and Smith predicts threshold conditions more accurately for the mixed beds if the bed pivoting angle is correctly defined. The pivoting angles of the beds used here are measured using a new technique designed specifically for comparison with the threshold data. The measured angles repeat the finding that the coarse grains are more mobile than the finer fractions of a mixture. The results are poorly described by the pivoting angle model presented by Wiberg & Smith (1987) and are better represented by a model of the form Φ = αDγ(Di/D50)β (after 21 ), where α, γ and β are empirical constants. The threshold model is found to be more effective using the improved pivoting relationship. The entrainment of grains is found to be easier beneath unidirectional flows than combined flows, in accordance with previous authors’ findings. A suggestion that this result is caused by a change in the erosion mechanism beneath wave flows is made. Wave boundary layers may act as an extended laminar sublayer over bed grains and reduce the erosive efficiency of the overlying current flow. The results of the experiment have implications for the natural sorting mechanisms of sediment beds being deposited in near-threshold flows.  相似文献

A variety of approaches have previously been developed to estimate the fraction of terrestrial or marine organic carbon present in aquatic sediments. The task of quantifying each component is especially important for the Arctic due to the regions’ sensitivity to global climate change and the potential for enhanced terrestrial organic carbon inputs with continued Arctic warming to alter carbon sequestration. Yet it is unclear how each approach compares in defining organic carbon sources in sediments as well as their impact on regional or pan-Arctic carbon budgets. Here, we investigated multiple methods: (1) two end-member mixing models utilizing bulk stable carbon isotopes; (2) the relationship between long-chain n-alkanes and organic carbon (ALKOC); (3) principal components analysis (PCA) combined with scaling of a large suite of lipid biomarkers; and (4) ratios of branched and isoprenoid glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraether lipids (the BIT index) to calculate the fraction of terrestrial organic matter components preserved in Arctic marine sediments.Estimated terrestrial organic carbon content among approaches showed considerable variation for identical sediment samples. For a majority of the samples, the BIT index resulted in the lowest estimates for terrestrial organic carbon, corroborating recent suggestions that this proxy may represent a distinct fraction of terrestrial organic matter; i.e., peat or soil organic matter, as opposed to markers such as n-alkanes or long-chain fatty acids which measure higher plant wax inputs. Because of the patchy inputs of n-alkanes to this region from coastal erosion in the western Arctic, the ALKOC approach was not as effective as when applied to river-dominated margins found in the eastern Arctic. The difficulties in constraining a marine δ13C end-member limit the applicability of stable isotope mixing models in polar regions. Estimates of terrestrial organic carbon using the lipid-based PCA method and the bulk δ13C mixing model approach varied drastically at each site, suggesting that organic matter fractions such as amino acids or carbohydrates may affect bulk organic matter composition in a manner that is not captured in the lipid-based analysis. Overall, terrestrial organic matter inputs to the Chukchi and western Beaufort Seas using the average of the methods at each site ranged from 11% to 44%, indicating that land-derived organic matter plays a substantial role in carbon dynamics in the western Arctic Ocean.  相似文献

Specific catchment area (SCA) patterns are commonly computed on grids using flow direction algorithms that treat the flow as coming from a point source at the pixel centre. These algorithms are all ambiguous in the definition of the flow width to be associated with a pixel when computing the SCA. Different methods for computing the flow width have been suggested, without giving an objective reason. In the few cases where this issue has been specifically discussed, the flow width is derived from subjective analysis and incorrect conceptualizations. This paper evaluates alternative approaches for defining the flow width when computing SCA patterns using the D∞ and D8 algorithms, by comparing theoretical and computed SCA patterns on sloping planes, inward and outward cones. Two new methods of defining the flow width are also analysed for both the D∞ and D8 algorithms. The performances of the different methods are discussed in relation to two dimensionless parameters: (1) the global resolution, defined as the ratio of a characteristic length of the study area to the grid size and (2) the upslope area resolution, defined as the ratio of the theoretical SCA to the grid size. The optimal methods are identified by specific threshold values of these dimensionless parameters. We conclude that assuming the flow width invariant and equal to the grid size is generally the best approach in most practical circumstances, both for the D∞ and D8 algorithm. This review covers developments in ELF and VLF radio-wave propagation research over the last 50 years of the Journal of Atmospheric and Solar-Terrestrial Physics. A review of such a large field, over such a long period, cannot be fully comprehensive and the authors have therefore covered important areas which have they themselves have found interesting. The survey begins with a review of work on natural and man made sources of ELF and VLF radiation. This is followed by sections on experimental and theoretical studies of unperturbed (ambient) ELF and VLF radio propagation. Schumann resonance research, which is currently undergoing a renaissance, is then reviewed. A review of research into transient perturbations of ELF and VLF propagation follows, extending from the early work on nuclear explosions up to the current work on sprites. The review concludes with a brief summary of the VLF navigation systems of the USSR and USA, (Alpha and Omega) whose development and life-span covered most of the last 50 years.  相似文献
