Meteorites have been found on the small Misfits Flat dry lakebed near Stagecoach, Nevada (119.382W, +39.348N). Since the first find on Sept. 22, 2013, a total of 58 stones of weathering stage W2/3 with a combined mass of 339 g have been collected in 19 visits to the area. This small (3.3 × 3.6 km) lakebed is now a newly designated dense collection area (DCA). Most meteorites were found in a small 350 × 180 m area along the north shore and most are fragments of several broken individual stones. Three of these fragments were classified as an LL4/5 of shock stage S2, now named Misfits Flat 001, one of which (stone MF33) fell 8.1 ± 1.3 ka ago based on the 14C terrestrial age, assuming it came from a 20–80 cm diameter meteoroid. In addition, a small darkly crusted meteorite MF34, now named Misfits Flat 002, was found 820 m WSW from the main mass. This meteorite is classified as an LL5 ordinary chondrite with shock stage S4/5. The meteorite is saturated in 14C at 63 dpm kg?1, suggesting it originated from the center of a 0.5 m diameter meteoroid, or deep inside a ~1.0 m meteoroid, less than 300 yr ago. Accounts exist of a fireball seen at 13:15 UT on March 2, 1895, that are consistent with the find location of Misfits Flat 002. 相似文献

A consequence of the biodegradation of petroleum is that lower molecular weight compounds are removed preferentially to higher molecular weight (HMW) compounds greater than triacontane (n-C30). The extent to which the latter compounds are biodegraded has rarely been studied. Reasons for this include the technical difficulties associated with carrying out biodegradability tests with solid, water-insoluble substances and the limits of the analytical techniques, such as gas chromatography (GC).A quantitative high temperature GC (HTGC) method was developed to monitor the biodegradation of the aliphatic fraction of a waxy Indonesian oil by Pseudomonas fluorescens. Recoveries of over 90% were obtained for n-alkanes up to hexacontane (C60) using liquid-liquid continuous extraction. After only 14 days, 80% of the aliphatic hydrocarbons had been degraded. At the end of the 136-day study, 14% of the original fraction remained. This comprised mainly C40+ compounds. No decrease in the concentrations of compounds above C45 was observed. However, the use of a rapid screening biodegradation method provided tentative proof that Pseudomonas fluorescens was capable of utilising n-alkanes up to C60 once the bacteria had acclimated to HMW alkanes. 相似文献

Ethiopia experiences significant climate-induced drought and stress on crop and livestock productivity, contributing to widespread food insecurity. Here, we present subseasonal crop water stress analyses that indicate degrading, growing conditions along Ethiopia’s eastern highlands, including productive and populated highland regions. These seasonally shifting areas of increasing water stress stretch from the north to south across eastern Ethiopia, intersecting regions of acute food insecurity and/or high population. Crop model simulations indicate that between 1982 and 2014, parts of eastern Amhara and eastern Oromia experienced increasing water deficits during the critical sowing, flowering, and ripening periods of crop growth. These trends occurred while population in these regions increased by 143% between 2000 and 2015. These areas of enhanced crop water stress in south-central Ethiopia coincide with regions of high population growth and ongoing crop extensification. Conversely, large regions of relatively unpopulated western Ethiopia are becoming wetter. These areas may therefore be good targets for agricultural development. 相似文献

The national total population growth rate during 1979-89 was roughly similar to that of 1970-79. However, the urban growth and urbanization processes slowed, while the rate of rural population change increased due chiefly to reduced rural-urban migration. Regional variations in rates of total, urban, and rural population change generally resembled those of 1970-79. Air photographs taken in 1946, 1960, and 1982, together with SPOT HVR-1 images obtained in April and October of 1988, are used to characterize recent activity in and around the caldera of Fernandina Volcano, West Galapagos Islands. The eruptive and collapse events during this time span appear to be distributed in a NW-SE band across the summit and caldera. On the flanks of the volcano, subtle topographic ridges indicate that this is a long-term preferred orientation of extra-caldera activity as well (although radial and arcuate fissures are found on all sectors). The caldera is formed from the coalescence of multiple collapse features that are also distributed along a NW-SE direction, and these give the caldera its elongate and scalloped outline. The NW and SE benches consist of lavas that ponded in once-separated depressions that have been incorporated into the caldera by more recent collapse. The volume of individual eruptions within the caldera over the observed 42 years appears to be small (4x106 m3) in comparison to the volumes of individual flows exposed in the caldera walls (120–150x106 m3). Field observations (in 1989) of lavas exposed in the caldera walls and their cross-cutting relationships show that there have been at least three generations of calderas, and that at times each was completely filled. An interplay between a varying supply rate to the volcano and a regional stress regime is suggested to be the cause of long-term spatial and volumetric variations in activity. When supply is high, the caldera is filled in relative to collapse and dikes tend to propagate in all directions through the edifice. At other times (such as the present) supply is relatively low; eruptions are small, the caldera is far from being filled in, and dike propagation is influenced by an extra-volcano stress regime. 相似文献

The organic matter of sinking particulate material collected in the Northeast Atlantic Ocean (ca. 49°N, 16°W) was investigated in order to determine temporal and depth-related variability in its composition. Three sediment traps were deployed at nominal depths of 1000 m (below the permanent thermocline), 3000 m (representing the deep-water fluxes) and at 4700 m, about 100 m above the seafloor (just above the benthic boundary layer). The samples span a 28-month sampling period from October 1995 until February 1998, each sample representing a period of between 7 and 28 days.Total organic carbon and total nitrogen contents decrease with depth, as did the absolute concentrations of most biochemicals measured in this study, such as intact proteins and individual lipids. However, concentrations of proteins relative to total organic carbon and total nitrogen did not show any significant change with depth, implying that they are not being rapidly degraded and so may provide an important supply of nitrogen to the benthos. Fluxes of protein, TN and TOC are significantly correlated at all depths.Lipid compositions vary temporally. During periods of high flux, particularly in the summer, the lipids are richer in ‘labile components’, namely unsaturated fatty acids and low molecular weight alcohols. During periods of low flux other compounds, such as sterols, steroidal ketones and a trisnorhopan-21-one are more abundant. One sample, taken close to the seafloor, was highly enriched in lipids, sterols and fatty acids in particular; this may represent detritus derived from bottom-dwelling invertebrates. 相似文献

Capillary gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) have been used to examine the aliphatic hydrocarbon fraction of specimens of the mussel, Mytilus edulis, collected from the legs of a North Sea oil-production platform. In addition to an unresolved complex mixture (UCM) of fossil fuel pollutant hydrocarbons (ca. 64 μg g?1 dry weight average), the fraction was dominated by large amounts (ca. 21 μgg?1 dry weight) of C31 and C33n-alkenes with 2, 3 and 4 double bonds. These alkenes have also been identified in the ubiquitous marine alga, Emiliania huxleyi, and in some species of fish taken from the North Sea. The close correspondence in the composition data suggest that, in the mussel, these alkenes arise from a biogenic dietary source, most probably from Emiliania huxleyi. This contention is supported by the identification in the mussel of unusual C37, C38 and C39 unsaturated straight-chain ketones which have recently been shown to be biosynthesised by Emiliania. 相似文献
