Photosystem II (PSII) herbicides are used in large quantities on agricultural lands adjoining the Great Barrier Reef (GBR). Routine monitoring at 14 sites in inshore waters of the GBR using passive sampling techniques detected diuron (32-94% of sampling periods) at maximum concentrations of 1.7-430ng L(-1) in the relatively pristine Cape York Region to the Mackay Whitsunday Region, respectively. A PSII herbicide equivalent (PSII-HEq) index developed as an indicator for reporting was dominated by diuron (average contribution 89%) and typically increased during the wet season. The maximum PSII-HEq indicates the potential for photosynthetic inhibition of diatoms, seagrass and coral-symbionts. PSII herbicides were significantly positively correlated with remotely sensed coloured dissolved organic matter, a proxy for freshwater extent. Combining these methods provides for the first time the potential to cost-effectively monitor improvements in water quality entering the GBR with respect to exposure to PSII herbicides.  相似文献

Water and gas samples were collected from (1) nine shallow groundwater aquifers overlying Marcellus Shale in north‐central West Virginia before active shale gas drilling, (2) wells producing gas from Upper Devonian sands and Middle Devonian Marcellus Shale in southwestern Pennsylvania, (3) coal‐mine water discharges in southwestern Pennsylvania, and (4) streams in southwestern Pennsylvania and north‐central West Virginia. Our preliminary results demonstrate that the oxygen and hydrogen isotope composition of water, carbon isotope composition of dissolved inorganic carbon, and carbon and hydrogen isotope compositions of methane in Upper Devonian sands and Marcellus Shale are very different compared with shallow groundwater aquifers, coal‐mine waters, and stream waters of the region. Therefore, spatiotemporal stable isotope monitoring of the different sources of water before, during, and after hydraulic fracturing can be used to identify migrations of fluids and gas from deep formations that are coincident with shale gas drilling.  相似文献

From the mid 1960s to the present, the normalized radar cross-section (NRCS) of the ocean has been measured using airborne radars operating over a frequency range of 0.4 to 14 GHz. Analyses of these data have shown that the NRCS was proportional to the ocean surface wind speed raised to some power, but the values of the exponent remained in dispute. This paper extends previous work and uses these NRCS measurements to demonstrate that to the first order, the NRCS is a function of only the friction velocity at the ocean's surface. Further analyses characterize the dependence of the NRCS on radar variables such as frequency, incidence angle, polarization, etc. Finally, recommendations are made for using Ku-band radars at large incidence angles for remote sensing of the wind friction velocity vector.  相似文献

The need for most efficient use of energy is abruptly in conflict with the need to maintain environmental quality in terms of heated effluents released from power plants. This study synthesizes biological results found from four effluent canals from power plants releasing heat on shallow estuaries: tropics, edge of tropics and subtropics. The dominant near-shore community in the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean is that of Thalassia, rich in animal and plant abundance and biomass. Summer mean temperatures in all three estuaries ranged around 30°C. Results show sustained temperatures of +5°C in summer denude the area of the Thalassia community. Temperatures +1 and +1.5°C were minimally damaging to the studied areas and can be considered rational release temperatures. Insufficient data was available at +2°C to make a statement; +4°C areas showed intense damage to the biological communities at all locations; +3°C effect varied from severe damage in the subtropics to 40% damage in the tropics. Recommended summer heated effluent release for power plants eliminating heat onto Thalassia beds would certainly nerver be greater than +3°C. A trade-off decision must be made by decision-makers as to +3 or +2°C as the upper permissable limit. Winter release of effluent temperature in areas where winter temperatures fall below 25°C could be above +3°C apparently without damage. Tropical and subtropical ecosystems are on the brink of disaster and small increments of change by man's activities can push them beyond tolerance limits. Evidently the marine tropics differ from marine temperate zones in their capacity to assimilate man's activities.  相似文献

Determination of alloThr/Thr ratios in foraminiferal tests ranging in age from Recent to ~ 700,000 yr B.P. has shown that threonine epimerization ratios approach a steady-state value of ~0.2. This is well below the equilibrium ratio of ~0.9 as measured in buffered aqueous solutions. It has also been found that the initial rate of decomposition of threonine in fossil foraminfera is about an order of magnitude faster than would be predicted on the basis of extrapolation from high temperature kinetic studies on free threonine in buffered aqueous solution. These results are apparently a consequence of metal cation catalysis of both the decomposition and the epimerization of free threonine, which is being continually released by the slow hydrolysis of peptide and proteinaceous material present in the fossil shells.  相似文献

The inner shelf platform off North Eleuthera consists of a series of terraces at 6 m, 8 m, 20 m, and 35 m depth, respectively. The boundary between 6 and 8 m terraces is marked by a near continuous reef ridge, landward and seaward of which isolated reef structures are found. Reefs are aggregates of pillar structures, which in turn are composed of columnar, club-shaped or mushroom-shaped pillars of corals. The dominant primary framebuilder above 3 m depth isAcropora palmata; below corals of the generaMontastrea andDiploria, Porites astreoides andP. porites also contribute to the frame, as does the hydrozoanMillepora. The secondary framebuilders start developing and changing the shape of the frame as soon as they find suitable substrates; most important are coralline red algae, which encrust internal and external surfaces, but also may fuse the components of the frame; other organisms just add to the frame. In contrast boring and rasping organisms destroy the frame. Constructing or destructing organisms were found living on every surface, external or internal, accreting or diminishing.The composite nature of the reef structure, fabrics of skeletal material, and borings of organisms provide numerous cavities of mm to m size. These are subject to syngenetic sedimentation and cementation, which help maintain the frame, but change composition, fabrics, and facies. Thus rates of organism growth and destruction, of sedimentation, cementation, and mechanical breakdown and the dynamic changes of these rates determine final shape and preservation of the reef.Recognition of the relationship between these processes should help interpret fossil reef remnants.
Zusammenfassung Die Schelfplattform vor North Eleuthera gliedert sich in mehrere Terrassenstufen, deren Ränder bei 6 m, 8 m, 20 m und 35 m Wassertiefe liegen. Der 6-m-Terrassenstufe folgt über 25 km ein nahezu ununterbrochener Korallenriffrücken; seewärts und landwärts von diesem Rücken hegen isolierte Riffstrukturen. Die Riffe setzen sich aus Pfeilern zusammen, die ihrerseits wieder säulige, keulenförmige oder pilzartige Korallenstöcke als kleinere Bauelemente aufweisen.Bis in 3 m Wassertiefe istAcropora palmata der wichtigste Riffbildner, tiefer herrschenMontastrea- undDiploria-Arten vor.Porites astreoides, P. porites und die HydrozoeMillepora tragen ebenfalls zur Gerüstbildung bei. Sobald geeignetes Substrat angeboten wird, beginnen die sekundären Riffbildner mit der Ausgestaltung des Riffgerüstes; hierbei beteiligen sich in erster Linie die Rotalgen, die alle externen und internen Oberflächen überkrusten, darüber hinaus aber auch das Riffgerüst fester zusammenfügen; die anderen sekundären Riffbildner fügen dem Gerüst Material hinzu. Im Gegensatz dazu zerstören bohrende und raspelnde Organismen das Riffgerüst. Aufbauende und zerstörende Organismen leben auf und unter jeder Oberfläche des Riffes, sei sie extern oder intern.Der komplexe Aufbau der Riffstrukturen, das Wachstum des organischen Gerüstes und die Tätigkeit bohrender Organismen führen zur Bildung zahlreicher Hohlräume von mm-bis m-Größe. In diesen Hohlräumen erfolgen syngenetische Sedimentation und Zementation, die zur Erhaltung des Gerüstes beitragen, wobei jedoch die Zusammensetzung, das Gefüge und die Lithofazies des ursprünglichen Gerüstes weitgehend umgewandelt werden. So wird die endgültige Form und Erhaltung des Riffes von den jeweiligen Geschwindigkeiten bzw. dem dynamischen Wechsel der Geschwindigkeiten des Aufbaues und der Zerstörung durch Organismen, der Sedimentation und Zementation sowie der mechanischen Zerstörung bestimmt. Die Kenntnis vom Zusammenspiel dieser Prozesse führt zum besseren Verständnis der Vorgänge, die am Aufbau der fossilen Riffe beteiligt waren.

Résumé La plate-forme continentale au large de North Eleuthera est formée de plusieurs terrasses en gradins dont les rebords se situent à des profondeurs d'eau de 6 m, 8 m, 20 m et 35 m. Le premier rebord (6 m) suit pendant plus de 25 km une crête récifale presque ininterrompue de part et d'autre de laquelle se trouvent des structures de récif isolées. Les récifs se composent de pinacles, qui à leur tour présentent des amas coralliens en forme de massue et de champignon.Jusqu'à 3 m de profondeur, l'Acroporapalmata est le plus important bâtisseur primaire; plus en profondeur, prédominent les espècesMontastrea etDiploria. LesPontes astreoides, P. porites et les hydrozoairesMillepora contribuent aussi à la formation de la charpente. Les constructeurs secondaires commencent à développer et à modifier la forme du bâtis dès qu'ils trouvent un substrat approprié; les algues rouges y participent en première ligne; elles s'incrustent sur les surfaces internes et externes; par ailleurs, elles cimentent plus solidement les éléments de la charpente du récif. Les bâtisseurs secondaires contribuent aux matériaux de charpente; en contre partie, des organismes perforants et râpeurs la détruisent. Les organismes constructeurs et destructeurs vivent au-dessus et en dessous de chaque surface du récif, qu'elles soient externes ou internes.La construction complexe des structures du récif, la croissance de la charpente organique et l'action des organismes perforants conduisent à la formation de nombreuses cavités de grandeurs comprises entre le mm et le m. Sédimentation et cimentation syngénétiques se produisent dans ces cavités; elles contribuent à la formation du bâtis mais en changent la composition, la structure et les microfaciès. Ainsi, la forme définitive et la conservation du récif sont déterminées par les vitesses de croissance organique et de destruction biologique, de sédimentation, de cimentation et de destruction mécanique ainsi que par des changements dynamiques de ces vitesses respectives. La connaissance des relations entre ces processus conduit à une meilleure compréhension des phénomènes qui prirent part à la construction des récifs fossiles.

The change from deep-rooted grass and shrub vegetation to annual-cropping dryland farming has contributed to serious soil salinization challenges on the semi-arid North American Great Plains. In some cases, cultivation of the Great Plains has increased the availability of water, causing dominant sulfate salts to travel from the uphill areas to depressions where it will surface when water evaporates at the soil surface. A potential solution could include the replanting of the native deep-rooted vegetation, which requires knowledge of the spatial distribution of soil salinity. This study tested the soil factors influencing electromagnetic-induction meter (EM38) readings of soil salinity distribution around wetlands. The objectives were to: (1) predict growth and survival of Salix dasyclados Wimm. (cv. ‘India’) along a salinity gradient in a small wetland, and (2) investigate whether newly established willows affected water-table fluctuations, which would indicate their phreatophytic nature or their ability to obtain their water supply from the zone of saturation. Results indicated significantly lower salinity values for sampling points with EM38 readings above 175 and 250 mS m−1 for height and survival, respectively. In addition, diurnal fluxes of the water table in areas of good willow growth and lower salinity indicated that cultivar ‘India’ was phreatophytic in these areas and therefore has great potential for being used to combat saline seeps.

It has been realized for some time that the slow solar wind with its embedded heliospheric current sheet often exhibits complex features suggesting at least partially transient origin. In this paper we investigate the structure of the slow solar wind using the observations by the Wind and STEREO spacecraft during two Carrington rotations (2054 and 2055). These occur at the time of minimum solar activity when the interplanetary medium is dominated by recurrent high-speed streams and large-scale interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs) are rare. However, the signatures of transients with small scale-sizes and/or low magnetic field strength (comparable with the typical solar wind value, ~?5 nT) are frequently found in the slow solar wind at these times. These events do not exhibit significant speed gradients across the structure, but instead appear to move with the surrounding flow. Source mapping using models based on GONG magnetograms suggests that these transients come from the vicinity of coronal source surface sector boundaries. In situ they are correspondingly observed in the vicinity of high density structures where the dominant electron heat flux reverses its flow polarity. These weak transients might be indications of dynamical changes at the coronal hole boundaries or at the edges of the helmet streamer belt previously reported in coronagraph observations. Our analysis supports the idea that even at solar minimum, a considerable fraction of the slow solar wind is transient in nature.  相似文献

Shortly after the September 11, 2001 attacks in the United States, the Wall Street Journal published an article claiming that al Qaeda sympathizers were using an obscure gemstone commodity known as tanzanite to raise funds for terrorist activities. Despite subsequent disclaimers by the US State Department, this allegation effectively marked tanzanite as a “conflict gem,” and set in motion a complex set of political maneuvers designed to rehabilitate the tanzanite industry’s reputation. This paper analyzes the immediate fallout from the Wall Street Journal article and the subsequent effects of anti-terrorist rhetoric on the tanzanite industry. I explore the origins of the “conflict gem” discourse and the political movement that has taken shape over the past decade to reform gemstone mining. Drawing on theories developed by critics of the fair trade movement, I examine a series of steps taken by the main corporate miner active in the tanzanite industry to re-brand and certify tanzanite as “conflict-free.” I underscore the degree to which these efforts have been inflected by new security provisions embodied in the USA Patriot Act.  相似文献
