Methane in the deep water of Izena Cauldron (maximum depth: ca. 1650 m) at the east side of mid-Okinawa Trough was studied by casting a CTD system with 12 Niskin bottles for water sampling at 11 stations inside and outside the cauldron. The water contained much methane up to 706 nmoles/l. The depths of maximum concentration varied widely from station to station, indicating the existence of a considerable number of vents emitting methane and heat. The waters containing less methane formed a straight line in theT-S diagram, while those containing more methane were more largely deviated from the line. The temperature anomaly was virtually proportional to the methane concentration, suggesting that the oxidation rate of methane inside the cauldron is negligibly small and methane can be used as a tracer of the cauldron water. The relation and the estimated vertical diffusivity gave the following fluxes. The emissions of methane and heat out of the bottom below 1450 m turn out to be 1400 moles/day and 7×1010 cal/day, respectively. The total emission rates inside the cauldron are presumed to be about twice the above values. The turnover time of methane has been estimated to be 240 days, which is also that of heat generated from the bottom and probably that of the bottom water. 相似文献
Fluctuation of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) was studied during 1971–1972 at monthly intervals in surface layers of Sagami Bay. Concentration of DOC varied from 0.8 to 1.7 mgC/l in surface water (0 m). Maximum concentration of 1.7 mgC/l was observed in July 1971 and after then DOC decreased gradually to a minimum of 0.8 mgC/l in May 1972. The fluctuation of DOC during the observation periods seems to have close relations with those of water temperature and salinity. High DOC concentration found in summer months may be associated with bloom of phytoplankton or intrusion of seawater from Tokyo Bay and/or inland water containing high DOC. 相似文献
More than 14,000 measurements of surface water xCO2 were obtained during two cruises, 3 weeks apart in June 2000, along 155°E between 34 and 44°N in the western North Pacific Ocean. Based on the distributions of salinity and sea surface temperature (SST), the region has been divided into 6 subregions; Oyashio, Oyashio front, Transition, Kuroshio front, and Kuroshio extension I and II zones, from north to south. The surface waters were always undersaturated with respect to atmospheric CO2. The Oyashio water was the least undersaturated: its xCO2 decreased slightly by 7 ppm, while SST increased by 2°C. The xCO2 normalized to a constant temperature decreased considerably. In the two frontal zones, a large drawdown of 30–40 ppm was observed after 18–19 days. In the Kuroshio extension zones, the xCO2 increased, but the normalized xCO2 decreased considerably. The Transition zone water may be somewhat affected by mixing with the subsurface water, as indicated by the smallest SST rise, an undecreased PO4 concentration, and a colder and less stable surface layer than the Oyashio front water. As the uncertainty derived from the air-sea CO2 flux was not large, the xCO2 data allowed us to calculate the net biological productivity. The productivities around 60 mmol C m−2d−1 outside the Transition zone indicate that the northwestern North Pacific, especially the two frontal zones, can be regarded as one of the most productive oceans in the world. 相似文献
Twenty-eight sea surface microlayer samples, along with subsurface bulk water samples were collected in Funka Bay, Japan during October 2000–March 2001 and analyzed for dimethylsulfoniopropionate, dissolved (DMSPd) and particulate (DMSPp), and chlorophyll a. The aim of the study was to examine the extent of enrichment of DMSP in the microlayer and its relationship to chlorophyll a, as well as the production rate of dimethylsulfide (DMS) from DMSP and the factors that influence this. The enrichment factor (EF) of DMSPd in the surface microlayer ranged from 0.81 to 4.6 with a mean of 1.85. In contrast, EF of DMSPp in the microlayer varied widely from 0.85–10.5 with an average of 3.21. Chlorophyll a also appeared to be enriched in the microlayer relative to the subsurface water. This may be seen as an important cause of the observed enrichment of DMSP in the microlayer. The concentrations of DMSPp in the surface microlayer showed a strong temporal variation, basically following the change in chlorophyll a levels. Moreover, the microlayer concentrations of DMSPp were, on average, 3-fold higher than the microlayer concentrations of DMSPd and there was a significant correlation between them. Additionally, there was a great variability in the ratios of DMSPp to chlorophyll a over the study period, reflecting seasonal variation in the proportion of DMSP producers in the total phytoplankton assemblage. It is interesting that the production rate of DMS was enhanced in the microlayer and this rate was closely correlated with the microlayer DMSPd concentration. Microlayer enrichment of chlorophyll a and higher DMS production rate in the microlayer provide favorable evidence supporting the view that the sea surface microlayer has a greater biological activity than the underlying water. 相似文献
In recent years, studies of the environmental hydrodynamics in coastal seas and tidal estuaries have placed focus on the processes
which determine the “fate” of longer-term transport. The lagrangian residual current has been recognized as an important factor
which affects the longer term transport processes since it is more relevant to use a Lagrangian mean velocity rather than
an Eulerian mean velocity to determine the origin of Water masses. In the present paper, an attempt is made to formulate a
three-dimensional dynamics on the tideinduced Lagrangian residual current and mass-transport based upon a three-dimensional
weakly-nonlinear model of tides. The Lagrangian residual velocity is shown to be the sum of the mass-transport velocity, which
is the sum of the Eulerian residual velocity and the Stokes’ drift velocity, and the Lagrangian residual drift velocity which
is dependent on the tidal current phase. This reveals that it is the mass-transport velocity which is the tidal cycle Eulerian
mean of the Lagrangian residual velocity and that the mass-transport velocity is correct to the second order of approximation
rather than to the first order. And then, a new longer-term transport equation which correctly describes the Lagrangian nature
of transport processes without introducing the Fickian hypothesis for tidal dispersion is derived. In fact, the convection
can be correctly represented by the Eulerian mean of the Lagrangian residual velocity, as the convective velocity in the longer-term
transport equation is nothing but the mass-transport velocity.

Abstract Sandstones from the Upper Cretaceous to Eocene succession of Central Palawan are rich in quartz grains and acidic volcanic rock fragments. Potassium feldspar grains and granitic rock fragments are commonly observed. The moderate to high SiO2 and low FeO plus MgO contents of the sandstones support the proposal that clasts were derived from a continental source region. Southern China (Kwangtung and Fukien regions) is inferred to be the source area of the sandstones. The sedimentary facies of the Upper Cretaceous to Eocene succession consist of turbidite and sandstones, suggesting that they were deposited in the deep sea portions of submarine-fans and basin plains situated along a continental margin. These features indicate that the Upper Cretaceous to Eocene succession of the Central Palawan were derived and drifted from the southern margin of China. The tectonic history related to the formation of Palawan Island is also discussed. 相似文献
In a weakly nonlinear tidal system, the depth-averaged equations for the first-order Lagrangian residual velocity (LRV) are
deduced systematically. For the case of a narrow bay, the equations are solved analytically and the results for a specific
bottom profile are discussed in detail. According to the pattern of the first-order LRV, the bay can be divided into three
parts, namely an inner part, a transitional zone, and an outer part. For the given depth profile, the streamline of the first-order
LRV for a shorter bay is a part of that for a longer bay. The first-order LRV depends on a nondimensional parameter that combines
the influences of the bottom friction coefficient, the tidal period and the averaged water depth. The form of the bottom friction
also has a significant influence on the first-order LRV. The second-order LRV, i.e., the Lagrangian drift, is analytically
solved and shows dependence on the initial tidal phase. The LRV differs from the Eulerian residual transport velocity both
quantitatively and qualitatively. It is demonstrated that the residual currents obtained according to other definitions may
cause misunderstanding of the mass transport in water exchange applications. 相似文献
The downward flux of Mn through the water column was directly measured using sediment traps. The Mn flux from the bottom sediment to the water column, and the removal rate of Mn in the bottom water were estimated from Mn gradients in the bottom water. The sediment traps were deployed more than ten times at the same station in Funka Bay, Japan. The trapped settling matter and filtered suspended matter samples were analyzed for Mn, Fe, Al and ignition loss. The observed downward flux of Mn through the water column in winter (1.3–2.8 μg/cm2 /day) was generally an order of magnitude larger than that in summer (0.13–0.45 μg/cm2 /day), and the Mn fluxes for both seasons were also greater than the accumulation rate of Mn in the bottom sediments (0.10 μg/cm 2/day). More Al was contained in the trapped settling matter than in the suspended matter, while Mn showed the opposite behavior. The Fe/Mn ratio of the residual fraction (obtained by subtracting the sediment component of the settling matter) was rather well correlated with the corresponding ratio in suspended matter. Settling particles are expected to scavenge suspended matter during their passage through the water column. The flux of Mn across the sediment—water interface was estimated from its vertical profiles in the water column to be 0.1–0.3 μg/cm2 day. The residence time of Mn in bottom water was about one to several months. These results suggest that Mn is actively recycled between the water column and the sediments of the coastal sea. 相似文献
In this paper, a new particle image velocimetry (PIV)-based measurement method is proposed to obtain the high-resolution tide-induced Lagrangian residual current field in the laboratory. A long gravity wave was generated to simulate the tide in a narrow tank full of water laden with PIV particles. Consecutive charge-coupled device (CCD) images were recorded with the studied layer illuminated with a laser beam. Two images separated by one tidal period were processed by applying the pattern-matching algorithm to get the horizontal tide-induced Lagrangian residual current field. The results coincide with sporadic results from the traditional surface-float tracing method, but with much higher spatial resolution and accuracy. Furthermore, it is found that the direct acquisition of the Lagrangian residual current may reduce the error at least by one order compared with those acquisition methods that require the detailed information of the tidal cycle.
The nonlinear effects of the eddy viscosity and the bottom friction on the Lagrangian residual velocity (LRV) are studied numerically in a narrow model bay. Three groups of the experiments with different eddy viscosity and different forms of the bottom friction are designed and are carried out in the three kinds of the topography. When the eddy viscosity is obtained from a two-equation turbulence closure model, the pattern of the LRV is more complex than that of the time invariant eddy viscosity case and the intensity is from more than 1.3 times to one order smaller than that of the linear eddy viscosity condition. The LRV are also acquired when the eddy viscosity varies from the flood-averaged one to the ebb-averaged one. It is found that when the flood-averaged eddy viscosity is bigger than the ebb-averaged eddy viscosity (flood-dominated asymmetry), the direction of the breadth-averaged LRV and the 3D LRV is nearly opposite to that when the eddy viscosity asymmetry is reverse (ebb-dominated asymmetry). However, the intensity of the LRV for the ebb-dominated case decreases toward the flood-dominated case as the ratio of the maximum depth in the deep channel and the minimum depth on the shoal increases. The different forms of the bottom friction also play a role in the LRV. The structures of the 3D LRV and the depth-integrated LRV are simpler, and the intensity of the LRV is two times smaller when the linear bottom friction is used than those when the quadratic bottom friction is used. 相似文献
