Results are presented of a detailed carbonate petrographic study of an Upper Miocene lacustrine mixed carbonate–siliciclastic succession in the Teruel Basin (Spain) with the aim of constraining lake‐level variability at different stratigraphic scales. Regular alternations of red to green mudstone and lacustrine limestone, termed the ‘basic cycle’, reflect lake‐level variations at the metre‐scale. In an earlier study, the basic cycle was shown to be controlled by the climatic precession cycle. Petrographic analysis made it possible to distinguish two main carbonate microfacies groups characteristic of very shallow transient and shallow permanent lake environments, respectively. In addition to the basic cyclicity, the microfacies analysis reveals lake‐level variations on a larger scale. As a consequence, the astronomical forcing hypothesis of the cyclicity in the Cascante section is explored further. A climate modelling study of orbital extremes indicates that high lake levels could relate to enhanced net winter precipitation and runoff during precession minima, consistent with Mediterranean geological data. Using this phase relationship, an astronomical tuning of the cycles is established starting from astronomical ages of magnetic reversal boundaries. Subsequently, successive basic cycles are correlated to precession minima. The tuning reveals an identical number of basic cycles in the Cascante section as precession‐related sapropel cycles in the deep marine succession at Monte dei Corvi (Italy), corroborating the precessional control of the basic cycles at Cascante. Lake‐level highstands in the large‐scale cycle identified by the microfacies analysis relate to maxima in both the ca 100 and 405 kyr eccentricity cycles, again consistent with Mediterranean geological data. Subtraction of the identified astronomically related (lake‐level) variations from the palaeoenvironmental record at Cascante indicates a shift to deeper and more permanent lacustrine environments in the upper half of the section. The cause of this shift remains unclear, but it may be linked to tectonics, non‐astronomical climate, long‐period astronomical cycles or autogenic processes.  相似文献

Blood samples from a total of 460 polar bears ( Ursus maritimus ) from various Arctic regions, but excluding the USSR, were collected during the period 1967-1981 to study electrophoretic variation in different proteins. Two hundred and one samples from Alaska, 48 from the Canadian Arctic, 89 from Svalbard, and 21 from Northeast Greenland were collected during the period 1967-1973 and were analysed by vertical polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis to study transferrin and hemoglobin polymorphism. Thirty-one samples collected in 1974 were analysed by starch gel electrophoresis for 14 enzyme systems in serum and red blood cells. Seventy samples collected from Alaska, the Barents Sea, and Canada in 1980-81 were studied by starch gel electrophoresis, and further analysed for protein variation by thin-layer isoelectric focusing, horizontal polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, and two-dimensional electrophoresis. In all, about 75 loci were analysed for variation. The degree of protein and enzyme variation in the polar bear was observed to be relatively low. Starch gel electrophoresis revealed variation of an unidentified serum protein. The distribution of this protein indicates a closer connection between bears in Alaska and Canada compared to those in Greenland and Svalbard, but the differences were not significant. As in many large mammals, the information from protein variation in polar bears has limited use for management purposes. We could not find any simple system usable for identification of discrete populations. On the basis of protein variation as sole criterion, the populations investigated could not be separated. Possible explanations for the uniformity of blood proteins can be exchange of bears between geographical areas and/or a high selective pressure in polar bears.  相似文献

A revised calculation of the age of the zero in the Swedish time scale by the aid of published varve diagrams (Eiden 1913; Borell & Offerberg 1955) confirms the earlier calculation by E. Nilsson (1960, 1968). The age of the zero, including 365 additional years for the extension of the time scale to present time (Cato 1985), should be historical – 7,288 (9,238 B.P.).  相似文献

Concentrations (ppm = ug/g dry weight) of total mercury (Hg) were determined in hair of polar bears ( Ursus maritimus) from northwestern Greenland (N = 22; period of sampling: 1978-1989), eastern Greenland (N = 44: 1984-1989) and Svalbard (N = 31; 1980). For subadults (2-6 years of life), adults (7-10 years). and old bears (>10 years), concentrations of total Hg in hair were not found to be dependent on age or sex. A decreasing trend in Hg concentrations was found from west to east. The mean concentrations of total Hg in hair (cubs of the year and yearlings excluded) were: northwestern Greenland, x = 8.38 ppm (min.-max.: 4.71-14.19 ppm. N = 21); eastern Greenland: x = 4.58 ppm (min.-max.: 2.50-8.83 ppm. N = 41); and Svalbard, x = 1.98 ppm (min.-max.: 1.02-4.55 ppm, N = 29). Concentrations found in northwestern Greenland were similar to those reported by others from the hair of polar bears sampled within management zone F of the eastern Canadian High Arctic. Concentrations of total Hg in polar bear hair from eastern Greenland were similar to concentrations found by others in contemporary (1988) material collected during spring in western Svalbard. However, the mean concentration of total Hg in the 1980 Svalbard material, which was collected during July-September, was significantly lower than concentrations found in samples taken during late winter and spring in eastern Greenland and at Svalbard, respectively. Presumably the relatively low concentrations found in the 1980 Svalbard sample arc attributable to the period of moult and hence a larger proportion of newly grown hair in the individual samples. In a subsample consisting of internal tissues from 19 polar bears from eastern Greenland (1984-1987), concentrations of total Hg in hair correlated positively with concentrations of total Hg (wet weight) in muscle (N = 6), liver (N = 19) and kidney (N = 19) tissue. For liver and kidney tissue these relationships were statistically significant.  相似文献

The Lund Diamicton (earlier named Lund Till) in SW Skåne, S. Sweden, is a glacioaquatic sediment consisting of clay and massive and laminated diamictons. It is characterized by clasts derived from the Baltic depression and its depositional history can be summarized as follows: After deglaciation, large fields of stagnant ice remained in the area and a periglacial land surface with ice-wedge polygons and wind-abraded clasts was developed in ice-free areas. A transgression followed and a clay/diamicton sediment was deposited, partly on top of stagnant ice and against a coastal barrier of stagnant ice along large parts of the basin boundary. This sediment is the Lund Diamicton. The main depositional processes were: fall-out of clay from suspension, sediment gravity flow from stagnant ice and icebergs and rain-out of debris from floating icebergs. The unit was extensively deformed by escaping pore water, loading, flow and due to melting of buried ice. The Lund Diamicton is the equivalent in this area of the classical 'Low Baltic till', which has been interpreted as a basal till deposited by the 'Low Baltic ice stream'. The present study concludes that this unit is instead a glacioaquatic sediment deposited during a transgression in the Öresund area. Its boundary represents the highest coastline and not the margin of a glacier.  相似文献

Clastic injections generated in connection with the formation of impact craters show many similarities to injections created by other geological processes. However, circumstances such as their position relative to the impact structure and the evidence of forceful processes indicate an impact origin. The Ordovician Lockne impact structure was formed in a marine environment with both sedimentary (Cambrian and Ordovician) and underlying crystalline (Proterozoic) target rocks. Sea water played a substantial part in the cratering process, especially in the modification of the newly formed crater as the water surged back into the structure. In the Lockne area clastic dykes and sills have long been known and have earlier been interpreted as neptunian dykes and conglomerates. So far seven cases of dykes and sills are known in the area. In this work these are interpreted as clastic injections formed in connection with the Lockne impact. The clastic injections occur in the crystalline basement and the sedimentary sequence. The material in the injections comes from all local lithologies (both sedimentary and crystalline) but the sedimentary sequence dominates as a source. The dykes and sills were injected simultaneously with the fracturing and dilation of the host rock in the cratering process, and occur at different stratigraphic levels. In some dykes, clasts from the host rock wall can be fitted back to their original position; the clasts are slightly rotated and surrounded by exotic material. Quartz grains with planar deformation features were observed in the injected material. Most of the sills within the bedded Ordovician limestone are restricted to marly beds, except for the feeder dykes which cut through the overlying beds. This circumstance demonstrates how the decompression has opened the strata along weaker layers and that the underpressure created subsequently sucked the material down. Laminar flow is a conspicuous internal structure in the dykes and sills and indicates viscous flow of injected material. The lamination in the injected material is parallel to the walls in each case. The material was lithified prior to the event and was crushed, mobilized in a water/sediment slurry and injected as dykes and sills.  相似文献

The mid-Cretaceous was a time in which rapid vertical carbonate accumulation alternated with intervals of world-wide crisis on carbonate platforms. Next to the well-known mid-Valanginian, mid-Aptian and Cenomanian/Turonian event, the late Albian Rotalipora appennirjica-7.one is a period of severe platform crisis which is reflected differently on different platforms in the Tethys, the Pacific and the Atlantic Ocean. On the Dinaric Platform in western Slovenia (Tethys) karstification and subsequent temporary drowning of parts of the platform is recorded in sediment infillings of a cave system in a reef along the northern edge of the open ocean platform. Biostratigraphic analysis indicates that vertical aggradation, karstification, short-term pelagic influx and subsequent shallow-water carbonate production all took place in the late Albian. Simultaneous, but complete drowning can be observed in the north-west Pacific which is an area where the demise of reefs is most obviously expressed by numerous sunken atolls. New sedimentological and palaeontological data, as well as seabeam and seismic data from several cruises, suggest a dramatic fall of sea level prior to a rise of even higher amplitude in the Rotalipora appenninica-zone. This sea-level rise led to the deposition of a drowning succession and the formation of terminally drowned barrier reefs, rimming the top of many guyots. Karstification and drowning during the same biozone is also recorded on an isolated, shelf-attached platform in the Basco-Cantabrian Basin (North Atlantic) which shows similar cavity systems, infilling sediments and a thin drowning succession. Another example of late Albian platform drowning is the Maracaibo Platform in north-west Venezuela. Thus, carbonate platforms can be used as recorders of high-amplitude sea-level changes, providing quantitative data on magnitude of fluctuations and their nature (relative vs. eustatic). In the case of the appenninica-extnt, they also provide evidence that even during Cretaceous greenhouse climate period(s), dramatic disturbance of climatic equilibrium linked with short-term high-amplitude regressive-transgressive cycle(s) occurred. The reason for this eustatic sea-level fluctuation is yet unclear but could ultimately be triggered by volcanotectonic processes.  相似文献

The Sete Cidades volcano (São Miguel, Azores) is situatedat the eastern end of the ultraslow spreading Terceira riftaxis. The volcano comprises several dominantly basaltic pre-calderaeruptions, a trachytic caldera-forming stage and a post-calderastage consisting of alternating trachytic and basaltic eruptions.The post-caldera flank lavas are more primitive (>5 wt %MgO) than the pre-caldera lavas, implying extended fractionalcrystallization and longer crustal residence times for the pre-caldera,shield-building lavas. Thermobarometric estimates show thatthe ascending alkali basaltic magmas stagnated and crystallizedat the crust–mantle boundary (15 km depth), whereas themore evolved magmas mainly fractionated in the upper crust (3km depth). The caldera-forming eruption was triggered by a basalticinjection into a shallow trachytic magma chamber. Lavas fromall stages follow a single, continuous liquid line of descentfrom alkali basalt to trachyte, although slight differencesin incompatible element (e.g. Ba/Nb, La/Nb) and Sr isotope ratiosimply some heterogeneity of the mantle source. Major and traceelement data suggest similar partial melting processes throughoutthe evolution of the volcano. Slight geochemical differencesbetween post- and pre-caldera stage lavas from the Sete Cidadesvolcanic system indicate a variation in the mantle source compositionwith time. The oxygen fugacity increased from the pre-calderato the post-caldera stage lavas, probably as a result of theassimilation of crustal rocks; this is supported by the presenceof crustal xenoliths in the lavas of the flank vents. The lavasfrom the Sete Cidades volcano generally have low Sr isotoperatios; however, rocks from one post-caldera vent on the westernflank indicate mixing with magmas resembling the lavas fromthe neighbouring Agua de Pau volcano, having higher Sr isotoperatios. The different magma sources at Sete Cidades and theadjacent Agua de Pau volcano imply that, despite their closeproximity, there is only limited interaction between them.
