Five short-period noncontact binaries (GR Tau, UU Lyn, BV Eri, RU Eri, and BW Eri) are studied. It is found from photometric and spectroscopic observations that (1) both components are noncontact to each other but are very close to the respective Roche lobes; (2) period change does not appear or it is very small; and (3) component stars of UU Lyn and RU Eri are normal main sequence stars while those of GR Tau and BV Eri are smaller and less massive components indicating in an advanced evolutionary state having experienced mass reversal.Paper presented at the IAU Third Asian-Pacific Regional Meeting, held in Kyoto, Japan, between 30 September–6 October, 1984.  相似文献

Abstract The internal structures of the Nojima Fault, south-west Japan, are examined from mesoscopic observations of continuous core samples from the Hirabayashi Geological Survey of Japan (GSJ) drilling. The drilling penetrated the central part of the Nojima Fault, which ruptured during the 1995 Kobe earthquake (Hyogo-ken Nanbu earthquake) ( M 7.2). It intersected a 0.3 m-thick layer of fault gouge, which is presumed to constitute the fault core (defined as a narrow zone of extremely concentrated deformation) of the Nojima Fault Zone. The rocks obtained from the Hirabayashi GSJ drilling were divided into five types based on the intensities of deformation and alteration: host rock, weakly deformed and altered granodiorite, fault breccia, cataclasite, and fault gouge. Weakly deformed and altered granodiorite is distributed widely in the fault zone. Fault breccia appears mostly just above the fault core. Cataclasite is distributed mainly in a narrow (≈1 m wide) zone in between the fault core and a smaller gouge zone encountered lower down from the drilling. Fault gouge in the fault core is divided into three types based on their color and textures. From their cross-cutting relationships and vein development, the lowest fault gouge in the fault core is judged to be newer than the other two. The fault zone characterized by the deformation and alteration is assumed to be deeper than 426.2 m and its net thickness is > 46.5 m. The fault rocks in the hanging wall (above the fault core) are deformed and altered more intensely than those in the footwall (below the fault core). Furthermore, the intensities of deformation and alteration increase progressively towards the fault core in the hanging wall, but not in the footwall. The difference in the fault rock distribution between the hanging wall and the footwall might be related to the offset of the Nojima Fault and/or the asymmetrical ground motion during earthquakes.  相似文献

A video recording system (VRS) with dark-field illumination was designed for continuous observation of the lobate ctenophore Bolinopsis mikado on spatial distribution, abundance and size distribution. In situ operation proved that the VRS was capable to discriminate B. mikado larger than 15 mm in total length at the towing speed around 0.5 m s–1. The VRS was useful to determine spatial distribution of B. mikado biomass, since it measured the abundance and size composition simultaneously.  相似文献

Three-year investigations into sperm whale-fall ecosystems in Japan   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
We report the first study of sperm whale‐fall ecosystems, based on mass sinking of whale carcasses at shelf depths in the northwest Pacific. We conducted three observations over a 2‐year period on replicate sperm‐whale carcasses implanted at depths of 219–254 m off the southern part of Japan from July 2003 to August 2005. The study was made possible by a mass stranding of sperm whales in January 2002, and the subsequent sinking of 12 carcasses in the waters off Cape Nomamisaki. Dense aggregations of unique chemosynthesis‐based fauna had formed around the whale carcasses after 18 months (July 2003). The mytilid mussel Adipicola pacifica was the most abundant macrofaunal species and covered most of the exposed bone surfaces. The general composition of the fauna was similar to that of deep‐water reducing habitats, but none of the species appearing in this study has been found at hydrothermal vents, cold seeps or deep‐water whale falls. A new species of lancelet, which was the first record of the subphylum Cephalochordata from reducing environments, a new species of Osedax; a rarely encountered benthic ctenophore, and a rare gastropod species were discovered at this sperm whale‐fall site. Benthic communities were similar across all the carcasses studied, although the body sizes of the whales were very different. The succession of epifaunal communities was relatively rapid and the sulphophilic stage was considerably shorter than that of other known whale falls.  相似文献

A method for the determination of the δ15N of nitrate in seawater described by Cline and Kaplan (1975) has been modified for application to low-level nitrate samples. We have minimized the reagent blank problem by replacing the Devarda's alloy with an aluminum reagent, and have also established a procedure that yields quantitative (93 ± 2%) extraction of nitrogen even at low nitrate levels. Though the amounts and the δ15N of the blank N varied from one reagent set to another, with these modifications, an overall N blank was reduced to approximately 0.80 ± 0.33 μmole N having an estimated δ15N value of −1.8‰. After blank and yield corrections, the measured isotopic composition of nitrate differed by approximately 0.1‰ from the actual value while the precision was within ±0.2‰ at the 1.25 μM level. The modified procedure was applied to seawater samples collected from the equatorial Pacific in order to compare the N blanks in field samples with those derived from laboratory experiments. The results support the suitability of the modified approach for isotopic analysis of oceanic nitrate in shallow water. A field survey of the 1992 Flores Island earthquake tsunami was conducted during December 29, 1992 to January 5, 1993 along the north coast of the eastern part of Flores Island. We visited over 40 villages, measured tsunami heights, and interviewed the inhabitants. It was clarified that the first wave attacked the coast within five minutes at most of the surveyed villages. The crust was uplifted west of the Cape of Batumanuk, and subsided east of it. In the residential area of Wuring, which is located on a sand spit with ground height of 2 meters, most wooden houses built on stilts collapsed and 87 people were killed even though the tsunami height reached only 3.2 meters. In the two villages on Babi Island, the tsunami swept away all wooden houses and killed 263 of 1,093 inhabitants. Tsunami height at Riang-Kroko village on the northeastern end of Flores Island reached 26.2 meters and 137 of the 406 inhabitants were killed by the tsumani. Evidence of landslides was detected at a few points on the coast of Hading Bay, and the huge tsunami was probably formed by earthquake-induced landslides. The relationship between tsunami height and mortality was checked for seven villages. The efficiencies of trees arranged in front of coastal villages, and coral reefs in dissipating the tsunami energy are discussed.  相似文献

Fine textures of clinopyroxene in an excentroradial pyroxene chondrule (EPC) and a comb-like pyroxene chondrule (CPC) in the Yamato-74191 chondrite (L3) have been studied by analytical electron microscopy. Both pyroxenes consist of three regions different in composition and texture; core, mantle and marginal regions, though the pyroxenes of the CPC are more Fe-rich than those of the EPC. The core region is the most Mg-rich with no Ca component and commonly shows polysynthetic (100) twins. The mantle region is slightly calcic, and the marginal region shows a rapid increase of Ca outward.The polysynthetic twins, cracks and subgrain boundaries in the core in the EPC and CPC must have formed during the transition from proto-type to clino-type pyroxenes. The exsolution textures in the mantle and marginal regions indicate initial crystallization of pigeonite-C followed by decomposition into pigeonite-P and augite. The decomposition must have taken place by nucleation growth in the mantle region and by spinodal decomposition in the marginal region. The periodicity of 15–20 nm in the spinodal decomposition textures indicates that the cooling rate of the pyroxenes, when passing through about 1000°C, was of the order of a few tens to several degrees centigrade per hour. The cooling history of the chondrules has been explained by a monotonous cooling controlled by the cooling rate of the surrounding medium.  相似文献

Indialite (hexagonal cordierite) has been found in a cordierite vein of polymetamorphosed pelitic rock, a member of the Unazuki schists in Hida terrane, central Japan. Most of the indialite grains show intergrowth textures with cordierite of orthorhombic symmetry. This is the second identification of indialite since the first one from a fused sediment in India. The intergrowth texture was formed by a nucleation-growth process accompanied with the first order transition from the hexagonal to the orthorhombic form. Characteristic pseudo-twin relation exists among the orthorhombic phases. Chemical compositions of both hexagonal and orthorhombic forms in the intergrowth have been deter-mined by analytical electron microscopy. The difference in Fe/(Mg+Fe) at the interfaces between the two forms indicates the existence of a transition loop in the (Mg, Fe)-cordierite. The transition of the present specimens is estimated to have initiated at about 700° C. A possible phase diagram of (Mg, Fe)-cordierite has been proposed, based on the result of this investigation.  相似文献
