Winter‐forest processes affect global and local climates. The interception‐sublimation fraction (F) of snowfall in forests is a substantial part of the winter water budget (up to 40%). Climate, weather‐forecast and hydrological modellers incorporate increasingly realistic surface schemes into their models, and algorithms describing snow accumulation and snow‐interception sublimation are now finding their way into these schemes. Spatially variable data for calibration and verification of wintertime dynamics therefore are needed for such modelling schemes. The value of F was determined from snow courses in open and forested areas in Hokkaido, Japan. The value of F was related to species and canopy‐structure measures such as closure, sky‐view fraction (SVF) and leaf‐area index (LAI). Forest structure was deduced from fish‐eye photographs. The value of F showed a strong linear correlation to structure: F = 0·44 ? 0·6 × SVF for SVF < 0·72 and F = 0 for SVF > 0·72, and F = 0·11 LAI. These relationships seemed valid for evergreen conifers, larch trees, alder, birch and mixed deciduous stands. Forest snow accumulation (SF) could be estimated from snowfall in open fields (So) and to LAI according to SF = So (1 ? 0·11 LAI) as well as from SVF according to SF = So (0·56 + 0·6 SVF) for SVF < 0·72. The value of SF was equal to So for SVF values above 0·72. The value of sky‐view fraction was correlated to the normalized difference snow index (NDSI) using a Landsat‐TM image for observation plots exceeding 1 ha. Variables F and SF were related to NDSI for these plots according to: F = ?0·37NDSI + 0·29 and SF = So (0·81 + 0·37NDSI). These relationships are somewhat hypothetical because plot‐size limitation only allowed one sparse‐forest observation of NDSI to be used. Fission-track (FT) analysis using apatite and zircon was performed on samples from two fracture zones (FZ) at the depths of 1140 and 1310 m within the 1838 m borehole core penetrating the Ryoke Granitic Rocks in the Nojima Fault at Nojima-Hirabayashi, Awaji Island, Japan, drilled just after the 1995 Hyogo-ken Nanbu earthquake. Clear discordance in apatite and zircon FT age was found for two samples located at  2 m below the central part of each FZs where the presence of pseudotachylyte and/or fault gouge would predict the largest amount of slip. Asymmetric distribution was identified by discordant ages with respect to the central part of FZs. These very local discordant ages in the fault reflect thermal anomalies caused by secondary heating with an inferred maximum temperature in the region between apatite and zircon closure temperatures at a time post-48 Ma. As a source of the secondary heating, heat transfer or dispersion via geothermal fluids caused presumably the observed similarity in asymmetric distribution of discordant FT ages at two different FZs. Other samples yield concordant FT zircon and apatite ages and these indicate rapid cooling within the bounds of two closure temperatures of these minerals at  60 Ma of the Ryoke Granitic Rocks.  相似文献

The variation of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and fluorescence characteristics during the phytoplankton bloom were investigated in Yashima Bay, at the eastern part of the Seto Inland Sea, Japan. We found significant accumulations of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), dissolved organic nitrogen (DON), chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) fluorescence, and UV260 during the phytoplankton bloom period in 2005, although lower accumulations of DOC and DON and only increases of CDOM fluorescence were observed during the bloom period in 2006. Little or no correlation between DOM and phytoplankton abundance might be due to the composition of DOM, which is a complex mixture of organic materials. The 3D-EEM results revealed that the DOM produced around the phytoplankton bloom period contained tyrosine, tryptophan, and humic-like substances. Our results showed that the occurrence of phytoplankton bloom contributed to the production of DOM in coastal water but the DOM accumulation depended on the type of phytoplankton bloom, the phytoplankton species in particular. From our results, we concluded that phytoplankton have a great role in the dynamics of DOM as a producer in a coastal environment.  相似文献

We investigated the effects of seawater acidification induced by ocean CO2 sequestration on bathypelagic prokaryotes. We simulated acidification conditions by bubbling high-CO2 air or adding chemical buffer solutions to seawater samples in order to examine changes in total cell counts, heterotrophic production rate, direct viable cell count, and relative abundance of Bacteria and Archaea. Considerable suppression of prokaryotic activities was observed at pH 7.0 or lower, especially in samples enriched with organic matter. The relative abundance of Archaea increased with increasing CO2 concentration. We found that seawater acidification can potentially alter heterotrophic activities and community structure of bathypelagic prokaryotes.  相似文献

Schumann's (1977) method of judging the realizability of turbulence closure models is examined. The relation between model constants obtained by this method does not always ensure the realizability of double moments. Still, this relation shows the degree of realizability. The seasonal variation of phytoplankton biomass and primary productivity in a heavily eutrophic embayment, Dokai Bay, Japan, was determined. Dokai Bay was characterized by high phytoplankton biomass and productivity during summer and low phytoplankton biomass and productivity during other seasons. The results suggested that phytoplankton growth was limited by only irradiance and water temperature under the high nutrient concentrations available for phytoplankton growth in the entire year. Moreover, in spite of sufficient nutrient for phytoplankton growth in the entire year, a red tide occurred only in the summer period in this bay. Our results suggested that a red tide occurred by the high phytoplankton growth rate in the summer season, but in other periods surface phytoplankton was flushed out of the bay before forming the red tide, because phytoplankton growth rate was low and could not form the red tide due to low irradiance and low water temperature.  相似文献

In-situ ion microprobe measurements of carbon isotopic compositions of graphite were made in seven metasediments and two carbonate rocks from the ca. 3.8 Ga Isua supracrustal belt, West Greenland. The δ13C values of micron-scale graphite globules in the metasediments and the carbonate rocks vary from -18 to +2‰ and from -7 to -3‰, respectively. The maximum δ13C value of graphite globules in the metasediment rises from -14 to -5‰, as the metamorphic grade increases from epidote-amphibolite to upper amphibolite facies. In a single hand specimen, the δ13C values of graphite inclusions in garnet are ∼7‰ lower on average than those outside garnet. Similarly, graphite armored by quartz apparently shows a few permil lower δ13C values than those on grain boundaries between noncarbonate minerals. The fact that early crystallized minerals include relatively 13C-depleted graphite indicates that the regional metamorphism increased the δ13C values of the Isua graphite. This is consistent with the regional trend of 13C-enrichment accompanied by the increase of metamorphic grade. The minimum fractionation between graphite and carbonate is consistent with the equilibrium fractionation at about 400 to 550 °C. These observations indicate that isotopic exchange with isotopically heavy carbonate caused 13C-enrichment of Isua graphite. The δ13C values of graphite reported here (δ13C > -18‰) were produced either as a metamorphic modification of organic carbon with initially much lower δ13C values, or as an abiological reaction such as decomposition of carbonate. If the isotopic exchange between carbonate and graphite during regional metamorphism controlled the 13C-enrichment of Isua graphite, previously reported large 13C-depletion of graphite, especially armored by apatite (Mojzsis et al., 1996) was probably premetamorphic in origin. This supports the existence of life at Isua time (ca. 3.8 Ga).  相似文献

We examined the characteristic feature and predictability of low frequency variability (LFV) of the atmosphere in the Northern Hemisphere winter (January and February) by using the empirical orthogonal functions (EOFs) of the geopotential height at 500 hPa. In the discussion, we used the EOFs for geostrophic zonal wind (Uznl) and the height deviation from the zonal mean (Zeddy). The set of EOFs for Uznl and Zeddy was denoted as Uznl-1. Uznl-2, …, Zeddy-1, Zeddy-2…, respectively. We used the data samples of 396 pentads derived from 33 years of NMC, ECMWF and JMA analyses, from January 1963 to 1995. From the calculated scores for Uznl-1, Uznl-2, Zeddy-1, Zeddy-2 and so on we found that Uznl-1 and Zeddy-1 were statistically stable and their scores were more persistent than those of the other EOFs. A close relationship existed between the scores of Uznl-1 and those of Zeddy-1 30-day forecast experiments were carried out with the medium resolution version of JMA global spectral model for 20 cases in January and February for the period of 1984-1992. Results showed that Zeddy-1 was more predicta?ble than the other EOFs for Zeddy Considering these results, we argued that prediction of the Zeddy-1 was to be one of the main target of extended range forecasting  相似文献
