A quantitative study on the use of converted waves for sub-basalt imaging   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0  
The idea of imaging beneath a high-velocity layer using converted waves has been popular since 1990. Because these wave types have their maximum amplitudes at mid- to far-offsets, the search for pure P-waves at the highly multiple-contaminated near-offsets can be avoided. For the Atlantic Margin, with buried thin-layered basalts, our quantitative study shows that the initial single-layered approach is not viable. Even in an unrealistic ideal geological setting, the amplitude of the symmetrical PSP-mode is far too weak to be recognized on towed streamer data. Furthermore, in the far-offset window, where locally converted waves have their strongest amplitudes, there is a multitude of other reflections, refractions and interbedded multiples, which have similar moveouts and, often, higher amplitudes. Without the removal of these events, a reliable image of the subsurface cannot be produced. We show that even if this problem were solved, it would be far easier to use the P-wave reflection from beneath the basalt at near-offsets. Our study shows that this wave type is by far the strongest response. A borehole-derived model using a thin-layered basalt sequence reveals that the strongest locally converted wave has an asymmetrical path and is 10 times weaker. All our results indicate that the pure P-modes provide the best chance of imaging sub-basalt sedimentary interfaces.  相似文献

The most important natural function of exposed sandy beaches is the filtration of large volumes of sea water which are flushed through the interstitial pore system by the actions of tides and waves. In this process organic material is mineralized by the interstitial fauna and nutrients returned to the sea. This paper examines the physical effects of oil in blocking or reducing this filtration. Reduced filtration of sea water may be caused by prevention or retardation of interstitial water flow and/or decrease in pore space. The magnitude of the effects depends on the volume of oil, its state of weathering, its location on the beach and its degree of admixture with sand. It appears that under all but the heaviest conditions of pollution these effects are relatively small and only become significant in situ when discrete layers of weathered oil occur near the surface in the upper intertidal zone where maximum water input normally occurs.  相似文献

Rayleigh wave attenuation coefficients and group velocities have been estimated for seven great-circle paths. The attenuation coefficient measurements cover the period range from 100 to 500 s, and group velocities the range from 100 to 600 s. Global average group velocities and attenuation coefficients have also been estimated for these period ranges. The spread of the individual path group velocities for 20-s averaging windows centred at 290, 250, 210, 180 and 150 s is less than 0.034, 0.028, 0.024, 0.048 and 0.071 km/s, respectively. Global average attenuation coefficients, when combined with global average group velocities, show that Q for Rayleigh waves has an approximately constant value of about 145 for periods between 150 and 220 s and slowly increases to a value of about 200 at a period of 400 s.  相似文献

Bouvet Island, situated near the southernmost end of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, is characterized by lavas ranging in composition from hawaiite through mugearite and benmoreite to rhyolite. Major and trace elements vary systematically throughout the sequence, as do mineral compositions, and geochemical modelling indicates that the compositional variations observed in the differentiated lavas can be ascribed to extensive fractional crystallization of a parental hawaiite magma. Following this scheme the hawaiite parent magma experienced approximately 44% fractional crystallization of plagioclase + clinopyroxene + olivine + opaque oxides and minor apatite to give rise to the mugearite magma, which in turn experienced a further 69% fractional crystallization of the same phase assemblage (though with more evolved compositions) to give rise to the Bouvet Island rhyolite. Extensive fractional crystallization (64%), possibly separated in time, of the parental hawaiite gave rise to the benmoreite magma. In the latter scheme the fractionating phases are similar both in composition and proportion to those crystallizing in the passage from hawaiite to mugearite, suggesting that the Bouvet Island hawaiites correspond in composition to a six phase (plag + of + cpx + Fe-Ti oxide + ap+ lq) saturation surface and that the more differentiated lavas resulted from differing degrees of crystallization on this surface.  相似文献

Summary Simple expressions for the deformation of equipotential surfaces and changes of the deflections of the vertical are derived at points of the Earth's surface, which are due to the variations of the rotational component of the gravity potential under free nutation of the Earth's axis of rotation (pole wandering). The results of the solution of this problem given in[1] are discussed. The values of the tilts and the changes of geoid heights for extreme deviations of the poles are considered from the point of view of the effect on measuring tilts and on levelling. An elastically deformable Earth is assumed. It is concluded that reductions with respect to the mean Earth's pole are not realistic at the present degree of accuracy of levelling. The necessity to reduce long-term tilt observations, or the possibility of determining the time variations of the rotational axis from the analysis of these observations is pointed out.  相似文献

Lake Jezero v Ledvici (NW Slovenia) is a 14 m deep mountain lake at an elevation of 1860 m, situated on limestone bedrock. It is an oligotrophic, alkaline and hard-water lake with a transparency of about 14 m and has suffered several times over recent centuries from strong earthquakes. In 1996 five sediment cores, between 35 and 45 cm long, were collected from the deepest part of the lake and analysed to reconstruct environmental changes over the last few centuries. The data indicate changes induced by pollution and climate change during the last two centuries similar to those in other European mountain and remote lakes. However, at this site earthquakes have also affected the lake and partly obscure the interpretation of the sediment record. From 1780 to 1890, sediment records show low abundance of diatoms and relatively high abundance of Cladocera. After 1890, the number of diatoms started to increase coinciding with a strong earthquake. From the beginning of the 20th century, concentrations of spheroidal carbonaceous particles (SCP), diatom valves and head capsules of chironomids gradually increased whilst in Cladocera the main difference observed was a change in the proportion of benthic taxa. After 1960, in parallel with a rise in air temperature, a further increase in accumulation rate of diatoms started, but there was a decrease in Cladocera.  相似文献

We analyzed 238U, 234U, 232Th, 230Th, and 226Ra by thermal ionization mass spectrometry (TIMS) and Ba by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) on eight Mn/Fe crusts from the Mecklenburg Bay (SW Baltic) and on one from the Bothnian Bay (N Baltic) to test the 226Raex/Ba ratio as potential geochronometer. 226Raex/Ba ratios decrease as a function of depth within the concretions in all analyzed profiles. Calculated diffusion coefficients are relatively low (∼9 · 10−7 cm2/yr for Ra and 5 · 10−7 cm2/yr for Ba) and suggest that diffusion is negligible for the Ra and Ba record. In addition, 226Raex/Ba ages are consistent and independent from the growth rate and growth direction within a crust. Thus, the decline in 226Raex/Ba ratio is most likely due to radioactive decay of 226Raex, although the influence of varying oxic conditions has still to be evaluated. 226Raex/Ba growth rates range from 0.021 to 0.0017 mm/yr and tend to be lower than those calculated and based on stratigraphic methods (1 to 0.013 mm/yr). 226Raex/Ba ages of concretions from shallow water environment (20 m depth, Mecklenburg Bay/SW Baltic) cover a time interval from 990 ± 140 yr to 4310 ± 310 yr BP corresponding to the stabilization of the sea level close to the present position about 5500 to 4500 yr ago. One sample from greater depth (70 m, Bothnian Bay-/N Baltic) showed a higher 226Raex/Ba age of 6460 ± 520 yr BP.  相似文献

An antenna ground plane (GP) plays a major role in the mitigation of multipath coming from underneath the antenna. A distinct trend in user antenna size and weight reduction has been observed during recent years. With this focus in mind, an overview of conventional flat conductive and impedance GP is provided. Results of modern developments of passive vertically stacked structures are discussed. The possibility of obtaining a reasonable level of multipath mitigation with vertical structures of several centimeters is shown.  相似文献

Using aircraft and surface data from the 1987 FIFE experiment in Kansas, we estimate the roughness length for momentum to be 0.19 m (with an error range 0.10–0.35 m), and the ratio of roughness length for momentum to that for heat to be about 16 (with an error range of 7–35).  相似文献
