The South Caspian Basin has accumulated a sedimentary succession ~20 km thick. Roughly half of this was deposited in the last 5.5 Ma, mainly in the largely lower Pliocene, fluvio‐lacustrine Productive Series, which is also the principal hydrocarbon reservoir succession in the basin. Heavy mineral data identify different sediment sources for both Productive Series sandstones and modern river sands. Lesser Caucasus sediment was supplied by the Palaeo‐Kura into the western part of the South Caspian Basin. Productive Series strata in the north of the basin were supplied by the Palaeo‐Volga, and represent a mixture of sediment from the Greater Caucasus and Russian Platform/Urals. Greater Caucasus sand input to the Palaeo‐Volga increased at the start of deposition of the Pereriva Suite, which is an important reservoir subunit of the Productive Series. We interpret this provenance shift as indicating enhanced uplift and exhumation of the Greater Caucasus within the Pliocene, during regional re‐organization of the Arabia–Eurasia collision, although late Cenozoic climate changes may have played a role.  相似文献

In comparison to other regions round the North Atlantic, good exposures in the Moroccan coastal basins offer an excellent opportunity to study the Mesozoic development of a passive continental margin including the relationship between oceanic and coastal sediments and datum levels of the pelagic fossils. From south to north, the Cretaceous sediments of the coastal basins of Tarfaya, Agadir, Essaouira and at the margin of the Meseta are described and compared with each other regarding macro- and microfauna, sedimentology, and paleoenvironment. For the mainly marine 2500 m resp. 1700 thick Cretaceous sequences of Agadir and Essaouira, a correlation of ammonite and foraminiferal zones is proposed. Probably both sections were formed in one basin, but certain facies differences were caused by different water depths since Middle Cretaceous times. Most of the early Cretaceous sediments of the Tarfaya region in the south and of the Meseta in the north are of continental origin. Late Cretaecous sediments of these regions reveal, however, principal differences, especially in view of the macrofauna. On the Meseta, the macrofauna is typical of the Mediterranean faunal province, whereas the Tarfaya fauna is characterized by north-boreal elements. This is explained by the influence of upwelling in connection with the initiation of an oceanic deep-sea circulation, which also can be traced into the Agadir section. As a result, already during Turonian times, here bituminous marls with chert layers are deposited. These are missing farther to the north, but later nannomarls, chalk, chert layers and, in addition, locally phosphates are formed there, too. Generally, during the Cretaceous period, a tendency towards decreasing sedimentation rates and a relative increase of the percentage of pelagic components such as planktonic foraminifera in the local sediment can be observed, indicating a sharp decrease of the terrigeneous influx and a landward transgression of the oceanic water mass. If the global eustatic curve for the Cretaceous oceans is compared to the local bathymetric curves of the Moroccan coastal basins, one can distinguish between local phenomena and global events (Turonian and Campanian transgressions). In comparing the Cretaceous sections of DSDP sites 370 and 137 with the Agadir sequence on the continent, an attempt is made to reveal the development of the marginal North Atlantic, related to an increase of the paleodepth and the influence of the CCD. At Cape Bojador, in a transect across the continental margin from inland wells to the upper rise (DSDP site 397), the subsidence history of the uniformly subsiding ?marginal basin“ is derived. In the Jurassic, the rates of subsidence as well as those of sedimentation reach the order of magnitude of about 100 m/million years. The early Cretaceous subsidence increases up to 140 m/million years. As a result, sedimentation soon cannot keep pace, the water depth at the outer margin increases, and the shelf edge and continental slope are formed. In the last 100 million years, the subsidence decreases more or less exponentially. For the well subdivided Cretaceous sequences of the coastal basins described above, the interrelationship between subsidence, paleowaterdepth, and sedimentation rate has been worked out in more detail.  相似文献

Published maps of red giant stars in the halo region of M31 exhibit a giant stellar stream to the south of this galaxy, as well as a giant 'shelf' to the northeast of M31's centre. Using these maps, we find that there is a fainter shelf of comparable size on the western side as well. By choosing appropriate structural and orbital parameters for an accreting dwarf satellite within the accurate M31 potential model of Geehan et al., we produce a very similar structure in an N -body simulation. In this scenario, the tidal stream produced at pericentre of the satellite's orbit matches the observed southern stream, while the forward continuation of this tidal stream makes up two orbital loops, broadened into fan-like structures by successive pericentric passages; these loops correspond to the north-eastern and western shelves. The tidal debris from the satellite also reproduces a previously observed 'stream' of counterrotating planetary nebulae and a related stream seen in red giant stars. The debris pattern in our simulation resembles the shell systems detected around many elliptical galaxies, though this is the first identification of a shell system in a spiral galaxy and the first in any galaxy close enough to allow measurements of stellar velocities and relative distances. We discuss the physics of these partial shells, highlighting the role played by spatial and velocity caustics in the observations. We show that kinematic surveys of the tidal debris will provide a sensitive measurement of M31's halo potential, while quantifying the surface density of debris in the shelves will let us reconstruct the original mass and time of disruption of the progenitor satellite.  相似文献

Batu Hijau is a world-class gold-rich porphyry copper deposit, situated in Sumbawa Island, Indonesia. Deep drilling indicates that several intervals of calc-silicate rock were intersected, where they are apparently interbedded with volcaniclastic rocks. The calc-silicate rocks occur at the contact with copper-gold-bearing tonalite porphyries. The rocks are fine-grained and granular with green, reddish-brown and white layers. The green layers consist mostly of fine-grained clinopyroxene (diopside and hedenbergite) and the reddish-brown layers consist mostly of garnet (andradite), whereas the white layers are commonly composed of calcite and zeolite (chabazite). The calc-silicate rocks were formed by contact metasomatism of andesitic volcaniclastic rocks, as it is calcic in composition. Paragenesis study reveals at least two stages of calc-silicate mineralization. Stage 1 (prograde) is characterized by the presence of garnet (andradite), clinopyroxene (diopside and hedenbergite), anorthite and quartz at 340–360 C (high salinity 35–45 NaCl wt percentage eqn.). Stage 2 (retrograde) is characterized by chlorite and rare epidote at 280–300 C (low salinity 1–10 NaCl wt% eqn.). Late calcite ± quartz veinlets and calcite + chabazite veins/veinlets may also be related to this stage and cross cut the oldest mineral assemblages. Mineralization (magnetite, chalcopyrite and pyrite) may occur during the retrograde stage. Clinopyroxene and garnet were modified by Fe-rich hydrothermal fluid (oxidizing condition) indicated by increase of Fe from core to rim of both the cogenetic minerals. The presence of the calc-silicate rocks associated with massive magnetite-chalcopyrite-pyrite assemblage indicates the occurrence of calcic-exoskarn surrounding the Batu Hijau porphyry copper-gold deposit.  相似文献

Gold is an important by-product in many porphyry-type deposits but the distribution and chemistry of gold in such systems remains poorly understood. Here we report the results of petrographic, electron microprobe, laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS), and flotation test studies of gold and associated copper sulfides within a paragenetic framework from the world-class Batu Hijau (914 mt @ 0.53% Cu, 0.40 g/t Au) porphyry copper–gold deposit, Indonesia. Unlike many other porphyry copper–gold deposits, early copper minerals (bornite–digenite–chalcocite) are well preserved at Batu Hijau and the chalcopyrite–pyrite overprint is less developed. Hence, it provides an excellent opportunity to study the entire gold paragenesis of the porphyry system. In 105 polished thin sections, 699 native gold grains were identified. Almost all of the native gold grains occurred either within quartz veins, attached to sulfide, or as free gold along quartz or silicate grain boundaries. The native gold grains are dominantly round in shape and mostly 1–12 m in size. The majority of gold was deposited during the formation of early A veins and is dominantly associated with bornite rather than chalcopyrite. The petrographic and LA-ICP-MS study results indicate that in bornite-rich ores gold mostly occurs within copper sulfide grains as invisible gold (i.e., within the sulfide structure) or as native gold grains. In chalcopyrite-rich ores gold mostly occurs as native gold grains with lesser invisible gold. Petrographic observations also indicate a higher proportion of free gold (native gold not attached to any sulfide) in chalcopyrite-rich ores compared to bornite rich ores. The pattern of free gold distribution appears to correlate with the flotation test data, where the average gold recovery value from chalcopyrite-rich ores is consistently lower than bornite-rich ores. Our data suggest that porphyry copper-gold deposits with chalcopyrite-rich ores are more likely to have a higher proportion of free gold and may require different ore processing strategies.Editorial handling: R. Hybrid event beds form when turbidity currents that transport or locally acquire significant quantities of mud decelerate. The mud dampens turbulence driving flow transformations, allowing both mud and sand to settle into dense, near-bed fluid layers and debris flows. Quantifying details of the mud distribution vertically in what are often complex tiered deposits is critical to reconstructing flow processes and explaining the diverse bed types left by mud-bearing gravity flows. High-resolution X-ray fluorescence core scanning provides continuous vertical compositional profiles that can help to constrain mud distribution at sub-millimetre scale, offering a significant improvement over discrete sampling. The approach is applied here to cores acquired from the Pennsylvanian Ross Sandstone Formation, western Ireland, where a range of hybrid event beds have been identified. Raw X-ray fluorescence counts are calibrated against element concentrations and mineral abundances determined on coincident core plugs, with element and element log-ratios used as proxies to track vertical changes in abundances of quartz, illite (including mica), chlorite and calcite cement. New insights include ‘stepped’ (to higher values) as opposed to ‘saw-tooth’ vertical changes in mud content and the presence of compositional banding that would otherwise be overlooked. Hybrid event beds in basin floor sheets that arrived ahead of the prograding fan system have significantly cleaner sandy components than those in mid-fan lobes. The latter may imply that the heads of the currents emerging from mid-fan channels entrained significant mud immediately before they collapsed. Many of the H3 debrites are bipartite with a sandier H3a division attributed to re-entrainment and mixing of a trailing debris or fluid mud flow (H3b) with sand left by the forward part of the flow. Hybrid event bed structure may thus partly reflect substrate interaction and mixing during deposition, and the texture of the bed divisions may not simply mirror those in the suspensions from which they formed.  相似文献
