The available data characterizing surface properties of near-Earth objects have been analyzed and compared with the data of large main belt asteroids. There are no evidences of the existence of solid rock surfaces among near-Earth objects.  相似文献

The results of V-band polarimetric observations of the potentially hazardous near-Earth Asteroid (23187) 2000 PN9 at large phase angles are presented as well as its photometric observations in BVRI bands. Observations were made in March-April 2006 during its close approach to the Earth using the 1.82-m Asiago telescope (Italy) and the 0.7-m telescope at the Chuguevskaya Observational Station (Ukraine). We obtained polarimetric measurements at the phase angle of 115°, the largest phase angle ever observed in asteroid polarimetry. Our data show that the maximum value of the polarization phase curve reached 7.7% and occurred in the phase angle range of 90-115°. The measured values of linear polarization degree, BVRI colors and magnitude-phase dependence correspond to the S-type composition of this asteroid. Based on our observations the following characteristics of the Asteroid (23187) 2000 PN9 were obtained: a rotation period of 2.5325±0.0004 h, a lightcurve amplitude of 0.13 mag, an albedo of 0.24±0.06 and a diameter of 1.6±0.3 km.  相似文献

We investigate the possible presence of heterogeneous surface features on asteroid (2867) Steins, using the G-mode multivariate statistical method (Coradini et al., 1977) applied to Rosetta/OSIRIS images. We analyze both NAC and WAC images obtained near around the closest approach that occurred on September 5th, 2008, through different filters centered on wavelengths ranging from 295 to 986 nm. The shape of Steins is modeled as a polyhedron of almost 58 000 facets. Photometric corrections were performed using Hapke's (2002) model to compensate for the variable illuminations conditions at the surface. The G-mode classification method was performed on all visible and illuminated facets, i.e. in a region limited to [−50°,+60°] in latitude and [−40°,+90°] in longitude, that represents almost 30% of the total surface. The analyzed set of facets does not show any significant difference in the reflected light content, suggesting no surface inhomogeneities larger than 4% at the 95% confidence level.  相似文献

Abstract— We present Markov‐Chain Monte‐Carlo methods (MCMC) for the derivation of empirical model parameters for photometric and polarimetric phase curves of asteroids. Here we model the two phase curves jointly at phase angles ≤25° using a linear‐exponential model, accounting for the opposition effect in disk‐integrated brightness and the negative branch in the degree of linear polarization. We apply the MCMC methods to V‐band phase curves of asteroids 419 Aurelia (taxonomic class F), 24 Themis (C), 1 Ceres (G), 20 Massalia (S), 55 Pandora (M), and 64 Angelina (E). We show that the photometric and polarimetric phase curves can be described using a common nonlinear parameter for the angular widths of the opposition effect and negative‐polarization branch, thus supporting the hypothesis of common physical mechanisms being responsible for the phenomena. Furthermore, incorporating polarimetric observations removes the indeterminacy of the opposition effect for 1 Ceres. We unveil a trend in the interrelation between the enhancement factor of the opposition effect and the angular width: the enhancement factor decreases with decreasing angular width. The minimum polarization and the polarimetric slope at the inversion angle show systematic trends when plotted against the angular width and the normalized photometric slope parameter. Our new approach allows improved analyses of possible similarities and differences among asteroidal surfaces.  相似文献

We develop a three-parameter H, G1, G2 magnitude phase function for asteroids starting from the current two-parameter H, G phase function. We describe stochastic optimization of the basis functions of the magnitude phase function based on a carefully chosen set of asteroid photometric observations covering the principal types of phase dependencies. We then illustrate the magnitude phase function with a chosen set of observations. It is shown that the H, G1, G2 phase function systematically improves fits to the existing data and considerably so, warranting the utilization of three parameters instead of two. With the help of the linear three-parameter phase function, we derive a nonlinear two-parameter H, G12 phase function, and demonstrate its applicability in predicting phase dependencies based on small numbers of observations.  相似文献

CCD‐photometry was performed for two Jupiter Trojan asteroids (911) Agamemnon and (4709) Ennomos for which the diameters were obtained from occultation events. New data on rotation periods, lightcurve amplitudes, color indices, magnitude–phase slopes, and absolute magnitudes were obtained for these asteroids. We have used the diameters from occultations (166 and 99 km) and new data on absolute magnitudes at the instant occultation (7.95 and 8.85 mag) to revise their albedos to 0.042 (911 Agamemnon) and 0.052 (4709 Ennomos).  相似文献

We have discovered that the Asteroid (234) Barbara exhibits very anomalous polarimetric properties. The phase-polarization curve of this asteroid is unique and is not matched by any other known atmosphereless body of our Solar System. Although a few preliminary conjectures can be made, for the moment the reasons of the peculiar polarimetric properties of this asteroid remain essentially unknown.  相似文献

CCD-photometry of three Jupiter Trojan asteroids were carried out to study their opposition effect. We obtained well-sampled magnitude–phase curves for (588) Achilles, (884) Priamus, and (1143) Odysseus in the maximal attainable phase angle range down to 0.1–0.2°. The magnitude–phase relations have a linear behavior in all observed range of phase angles and do not show any non-linear opposition brightening. We have not found any confident differences between phase slopes measured in B, V and R bands. The values of the measured phase slopes of Trojans are different from available data for Centaurs. They are within the range of phase slopes measured for some low-albedo main belt asteroids, also exhibit a linear behavior down to small phase angles. An absence of non-linear opposition brightening puts constraints on the surface properties of the studied objects, assuming very dark surfaces where single scattering plays dominating role.We also determined the rotation periods, amplitudes, the values of color indexes B–V and V–R, and the absolute magnitudes of these asteroids.  相似文献

Lightcurve observations of 16 near-Earth objects (NEOs) and 2 Mars-crossers in 1996-1999 from three observational sites are presented. Eight objects were observed shortly after their discovery within the follow-up program of NEO observations. We were able to determine rotation periods for 14 asteroids. For 8 objects (5626, 5732, 1998 FM5, 1998 FX2, 1998 UT18, 1998 VO33, 1999 RQ36, 1999 US3) our determinations constitute new results while in the remaining 6 cases (3200, 4341, 7025, 7822, 11066, 1992 QN) we could improve or confirm previously published periods. We also put constraints on the spin vector of 3200 Phaethon.  相似文献

We present observations of magnitude-phase dependences of three low-albedo asteroids down to phase angles of 0.1–0.2°. Data were obtained during 40 nights from 1994 to 1995 within the joint observational program at ESO and Kharkiv Astronomical Observatories with the aim to reach as low phase angles as possible. All three low-albedo asteroids may display a small nonlinear increase in magnitude-phase dependence at subdegree phase angles. The phase curves of 50 Virginia and 102 Miriam are poorly approximated by the HG function. Rotation periods of the asteroids were also determined: 14.310±0.010 hours for 50 Virginia, 6.030±0.001 h for 91 Aegina and 15.789± 0.003 h for 102 Miriam.  相似文献
