We show that present day observational techniques make it possible to detect diffuse gas masses down to ~1010 M in cosmic voids with linear sizes of ~1 Mpc or larger. The observations consist of searches for absorption lines, similar in character to those produced in galactic interstellar clouds, in the spectra of high-redshift objects located beyond previously identified voids adjoining nearby superclusters.  相似文献

The Laplace resonance among the Galilean satellites Io, Europa, and Ganymede is traditionally reduced to a pendulum-like dynamical problem by neglecting short-period variations of several orbital elements. However, some of these variations that can now be neglected may once have had longer periods, comparable to the “pendulum” period, if the system was formerly in deep resonance (pairs of periods even closer to the ratio 2:1 than they are now). In that case, the dynamical system cannot be reduced to fewer than nine dimensions. The nine-dimensional system is linearized here in order to study small variations about equilibrium. When tidal effects are included, the resulting evolution is substantially the same as was indicated by the pendulum approach, except that evolution out of deep resonance is found to be somewhat slower than suggested by extrapolation of the pendulum results. This slower rate helps support my hypothesis that the system may have evolved from deep resonance, although other factors still need to be considered to determine whether that hypothesis is quantitatively viable.  相似文献

为了分析植物排放到大气中的挥发性有机物,在2000年1-6月期间,与美国国家大气研究中心(NCAR)的科学家共同发展和研究了一套自动的气相色谱系统和分析方法。该系统引入一个小型冰箱以除去空气样品进样时的水分,得到了对挥发性有机物样品进行分析时比较好的准确度。在5℃以及稳定的进样速率的条件下,可以得到比较好的除水效果。对NCAR附近的大气进行了采样,并利用此系统做了分析。本简单介绍此自动系统以及样品分析结果。实验结果表明,此套系统具有良好的重复性和稳定性,主要的挥发性有机物的成分如异戊二烯和单萜烯等具有明显的日变化。  相似文献

The Puu Oo eruption in the middle of Kilauea volcano's east rift zone provides an excellent opportunity to utilize petrologic constraints to interpret rift-zone processes. Emplacement of a dike began 24 hours before the start of the eruption on 3 January 1983. Seismic and geodetic evidence indicates that the dike collided with a magma body in the rift zone. Most of the lava produced during the initial episode of the Puu Oo eruption is of hybrid composition, with petrographic and geochemical evidence of mixing magmas of highly evllved and more mafic compositions. Some olivine and plagioclase grains in the hybrid lavas show reverse zoning. Whole-rock compositional variations are linear even for normally compatible elements like Ni and Cr. Leastsquares mixing calculations yield good residuals for major and trace element analyses for magma mixing. Crystal fractionation calculations yield unsatisfactory residuals. The highly evolved magma is similar in composition to the lava from the 1977 eruption and, at one point, vents for these two eruptions are only 200 m apart. Possibly both the 1977 lava and the highly evolved component of the episode 1 Puu Oo lava were derived from a common body of rift-zone-stored magma. The more mafic mixing component may be represented by the most mafic lava from the January 1983 eruption; it shows no evidence of magma mixing. The dike that was intruded just prior to the start of the Puu Oo eruption may have acted as a hydraulic plunger causing mixing of the two rift-zone-stored magmas.  相似文献

Resource-dependent communities are subject to both unstable economic patterns and environmental degradation associated with extractive industries. However, few studies have empirically analyzed these dynamics in tandem and over time. This paper explores whether Appalachian neighborhoods closer to coal waste impoundments experienced steeper poverty changes from 1990 to 2000. Impoundment failures have resulted in some of the largest environmental disasters in U.S. history and scientists have expressed concerns over their growing heights and risks. Spatial regression models show that neighborhoods closer to impoundments have higher poverty increases on average, even after controlling for mining employment and other variables. These findings highlight the need for a deeper consideration of the environmental inequalities associated with the continued downturn of coal production and employment in the United States. Further, discussions about just transitions must recognize the legacy hazards and externalities associated with extractive industries – and their impacts on communities.  相似文献

The observations of dust gas in diffuse and molecular clouds are shown to reflect not only their current state but their past history. The interpretation of infrared spectra of dust in molecular clouds using appropriate core-mantle grains shows that: (1) the kinds and amounts of ices, (2) the relative proportion of such important interstellar molecules as H2O and CO, (3) the evidence for the less abundant solid species X–CN, COS, H2S, and (4) the thermal history of the dust may all be demonstrated quantitatively from laboratory analog studies of ultraviolet photoprocessing of relevant ices and from theoretical studies of gas-dust interactions. In diffuse clouds the dust is shown to consist predominantly of refractory organic compounds which originate as residues of the photoprocessing of volatile ices in molecular clouds and which undergo further physical and chemical evolution in the diffuse clouds.Review paper presented at a Workshop on The Role of Dust in Dense Regions of Interstellar Matter, held at Georgenthal, G.D.R., in March 1986.  相似文献

The origin of Phobos and Deimos is considered with a view to accounting for the existence of very small satellites with circular orbits in the Martian equatorial plane, and simultaneously for the suspected angular momentum deficiency of the Mars system. All models considered failed to satisfy at least one requirement, and the problem is considered more puzzling than is at first apparent. The Martian angular momentum deficiency, if physically significant, may be unrelated to the present satellites' origin, but might relate to a large ancient satellite, long ago destroyed. Accretion onto Mars of large amounts of asteroidal dust brought in by Poynting-Robertson drag may have some bearing on the angular momentum problem.  相似文献

A simulation of collisional and gravitational interaction in the early solar system generates planets ~500 km in diameter from an initial swarm of kilometer-sized planetesimals, such as might have resulted from gravitational instabilities in the solar nebula. The model treats collisions according to experimental and theoretical impact results (such as rebound, cratering, and catastrophic fragmentation) for a variety of materials whose parameters span plausible values for early solid objects. Ad hoc sticking mechanisms are avoided. The small planets form in ~104 yr, during which time most of the mass of the system continues to reside in particles near the original size. The relative random velocities remain of the order of a kilometer-sized body's escape velocity, with random velocities of the largest objects somewhat depressed because of damping by the bulk of the material. The simulation is terminated when the largest objects' random motion is of smaller dimension than their collision cross sections, so that the “particle-in-a-box” statistical methods of the model break down. The few 500-km planets, in a swarm still dominated by kilometer-scale planetesimals, may act as “seeds” for the subsequent, gradual, accretional growth into full-sized planets.  相似文献

Laboratory and theoretical studies have been made of the effects of ultraviolet photolysis of interstellar grain mantles which consist of combinations of hydrogen, oxygen, carbon and nitrogen — dirty ice. It is shown that processes involving photolysis (photoprocessing) of interstellar grains are important during most of their lifetime even including the time they spend in dense clouds. A laboratory designed to simulate the interstellar conditions is described. This is the first time such a laboratory has been able to provide results which may be directly scaled to the astrophysical situations involving interstellar grains and their environment. The evolution of grain analogs is followed by observing the infrared absorption spectra of photolyzed samples of ices deposited at 10 K. The creation and storage of radicals and the production of molecules occur as a result of reactions within the solid. A large number of molecules and radicals observed in the interstellar gas appear in the irradiated ices. Energy released during warm-up is seen from visible luminescence and inferred from vapor pressure enhancement which occurs during warming of photolyzed samples relative to unphotolyzed samples. The evolution of a grain and its role as a source as well as a sink of molecules is pictured as a statistical process within dense clouds. The gradual accretion on and photolysis of an individual grain provides the stored chemical energy the release of which is sporadically triggered by relatively mild events (such as low velocity grain-grain collisions) to produce the impulsive heating needed to eject or evaporate a portion of the grain mantle. An extremely complex and rather refractory substance possessing the infrared signatures of amino groups and carboxylic acid groups and having a maximum mass of 514 amu has been produced at a rate corresponding to a mass conversion rate of interstellar grains of between 2% and 20% in 107 yr.
