Hyperspectral remote sensing research was conducted to document the biophysical and biochemical characteristics of controlled forest plots subjected to various nutrient and irrigation treatments. The experimental plots were located on the Savannah River Site near Aiken, SC. AISA hyperspectral imagery were analysed using three approaches, including: (1) normalized difference vegetation index based simple linear regression (NSLR), (2) partial least squares regression (PLSR) and (3) machine-learning regression trees (MLRT) to predict the biophysical and biochemical characteristics of the crops (leaf area index, stem biomass and five leaf nutrients concentrations). The calibration and cross-validation results were compared between the three techniques. The PLSR approach generally resulted in good predictive performance. The MLRT approach appeared to be a useful method to predict characteristics in a complex environment (i.e. many tree species and numerous fertilization and/or irrigation treatments) due to its powerful adaptability. 相似文献

The sensitivity of the bifurcation of the North Equatorial Current in the Pacific to different wind products is investigated.
Variations of the bifurcation latitude with season is simulated in a purely wind-driven model and is found to be in agreement
with recent observations. The seasonal cycle is nearly independent of the wind climatology, but the annual average latitude
depends on the wind stress curl. It is also shown that in the upper ocean, the poleward shift in bifurcation latitude with
depth is realistic in our simple model. This implies that given a stratification close to the observed, it is primarily the

This paper presents an assessment of the avalanche hazard potential and the resulting risks on mountain roads for a 38.7-km-long
section of road no 76 (Siglufjarearvegur) in northern Iceland following a regional scale approach developed in the Alps. The
assessment of the individual avalanche death risk proved applicable to distinguish areas of avalanche hazard with a risk above
the accepted level, which should be given priority in following detailed investigations and the planning of possible protective
measures, from road sections where the avalanche death risk is low and accepted according to international practice. The cumulative
individual and collective avalanche death risks in the investigated road section provide a comparable measure for assessing
the avalanche hazard both within the Icelandic public road network and on an international scale. The case study on road no
76 in northern Iceland shows that a standardised regional scale risk-based approach is practical to determine, analyse and
assess the avalanche hazard situation on mountain roads in Iceland and guarantees comprehensible, reproducible and comparable

Subsurface sediments from a pockmark area in South-Western Barents Sea have been earlier found to contain elevated levels of petroleum-related polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. This work describes a comprehensive analysis of various biomarkers, including the highly source-specific hopanes, in a 4.5?m long gravity core from the same area, together with subsurface sediment samples from other areas in the region without pockmarks present ("background samples"). A clear difference between the pockmark gravity core and the background sediment cores was found, both with regard to genesis and the level of transformation of organic matter. A number of indicator parameters, such as methylphenanthrene index (MPI-1), point towards a significantly higher maturity of hydrocarbons in the pockmark core throughout its length as compared to the other sampled locations. Higher contents of microbial hopanoids (hopenes) may indicate the former presence of petroleum. These findings confirm the hypothesis of a natural hydrocarbon source in the deeper strata present in the studied location with pockmarks. 相似文献

The Square Kilometre Array (SKA) will have a low frequency component (SKA-low) which has as one of its main science goals the study of the redshifted 21 cm line from the earliest phases of star and galaxy formation in the Universe. This 21 cm signal provides a new and unique window both on the time of the formation of the first stars and accreting black holes and the subsequent period of substantial ionization of the intergalactic medium. The signal will teach us fundamental new things about the earliest phases of structure formation, cosmology and even has the potential to lead to the discovery of new physical phenomena. Berm formation and morphological development of the beach face have been observed during a neap–neap tidal cycle on the gently sloping and accreting beach at Vejers, Denmark. During the field campaign, an intertidal bar migrated onshore and stabilized as a berm on the foreshore. A new intertidal bar occurred on the lower beach face, migrated onshore on the rising tide and finally merged with the pre‐existing berm. As the tide continued to rise, the new berm translated further onshore as an intertidal bar to the uppermost part of the foreshore. The sediment transport during the berm transition was onshore directed in the upper swash and offshore directed in the lower swash. This berm development can be described through both the neap‐berm, ridge‐and‐runnel and berm‐ridge development concepts proposed by Hine (Sedimentology 1979; 26: 333–351), and all three stages were observed during only three tidal cycles. The main factors controlling this fast transformation were the gentle slope of the cross‐shore profile, rapid water level translation rates, substantial swash overtopping of the berm, and low infiltration rates. Despite the onshore migration of intertidal bars and berm formation, no net foreshore accretion took place during the field campaign. This was largely due to the formation of rip channels with strong rip currents cutting through the intertidal bars and the berm, which acted as a sediment drain in the profile. Deer–vehicle collisions (DVCs) are a constant problem in North America that cost millions of dollars of damage and loss of human life. This study investigated the spatial relationship of DVCs for a county in western Indiana using nearest neighbor analysis, chi-square test of independence, and a landscape metric: the percentage of like adjacencies. The study was able to show that DVCs are not randomly located, and that habitat type and structure may play an important role in the location of DVCs. 相似文献

To assess differences between object and pixel-based reservoir modeling techniques, ten realizations of a UK Continental Shelf braided fluvial reservoir were produced using Boolean Simulation (BS) and Sequential Indicator Simulation (SIS). Various sensitivities associated with geological input data as well as with technique-specific modeling parameters were analyzed for both techniques. The resulting realizations from the object-based and pixel-based modeling efforts were assessed by visual inspection and by evaluation of the values and ranges of the single-phase effective permeability tensors, obtained through upscaling. The BS method performed well for the modeling of two types of fluvial channels, yielding well-confined channels, but failed to represent the complex interaction of these with sheetflood and other deposits present in the reservoir. SIS gave less confined channels and had great difficulty in representing the large-scale geometries of one type of channel while maintaining its appropriate proportions. Adding an SIS background to the Boolean channels, as opposed to a Boolean background, resulted in an improved distribution of sheetflood bodies. The permeability results indicated that the SIS method yielded models with much higher horizontal permeability values (20–100%) and lower horizontal anisotropy than the BS versions. By widening the channel distribution and increasing the range of azimuths, however, the BS-produced models gave results approaching the SIS behavior. For this reservoir, we chose to combine the two methods by using object-based channels and a pixel-based heterogeneous background, resulting in moderate permeability and anisotropy levels. 相似文献

Inversion of local-area helioseismic time-distance data has so far only been done in the ray approximation (Kosovichev, 1996). Since this is a high-frequency approximation its applicability can be questioned for the solar case. Bogdan (1997) showed that for a simple solar model the localized wave packets do follow, but are not confined to, the ray path. We use an approximation based on the first Fresnel zone that has been developed in geophysics by Snieder and Lomax (1996) to go beyond the ray approximation in the inversions. We have calculated sensitivity kernels using both approximations. To test them we use a finite-difference forward modeling of the whole wave field in an acoustic medium reminiscent of the Sun. We use the finite-difference modeling to calculate sensitivity kernels for the full wave field and compare this with the other kernels. The results show that the Fresnel-zone-based kernels are in good agreement with the sensitivity obtained from the modeling. Thus these new kernels represent a significant step forward in the inversion of time-distance data. 相似文献
