Light detection and ranging (LIDAR) is a remote sensing technique that uses light, often using pulses from a laser to measure the distance to a target. Both terrestrial- and airborne-based LIDAR techniques have been frequently used to map landslides. Airborne LIDAR has the advantage of identifying large scarps of landslides covered by tree canopies and is widely applied in identifying historical and current active landslides hidden in forested areas. However, because landslides naturally have relatively small vertical surface deformation in the foot area, it is practically difficult to identify the margins of landslide foot area with the limited spatial resolution (few decimeters) of airborne LIDAR. Alternatively, ground-based LIDAR can achieve resolution of several centimeters and also has the advantages of being portable, repeatable, and less costly. Thus, ground-based LIDAR can be used to identify small deformations in landslide foot areas by differencing repeated terrestrial laser scanning surveys. This study demonstrates a method of identifying the superficial boundaries as well as the bottom boundary (sliding plane) of an active landslide in National Rainforest Park, Puerto Rico, USA, using the combination of ground-based and airborne LIDAR data. The method of combining terrestrial and airborne LIDAR data can be used to study landslides in other regions. This study also indicates that intensity and density of laser point clouds are remarkably useful in identifying superficial boundaries of landslides. 相似文献

Small amounts of oil that can persist for decades in the intertidal zone of coarse-sediment beaches have been documented in a few well-studied cases. Oil that survives attenuation over the short-term (weeks to months) will persist until there is a change in the environmental conditions, as might occur where there is a seasonal storm-wave climate or as a beach undergoes long-term (erosional) changes. Oil residues can persist on the beach surface as tar mats, asphalt-like pavements, or as veneers on sediment particles or hard surfaces. Subsurface oil residues can persist in similar forms or as fill or partial fill of the pore spaces between coarse-sediment particles. Oil penetrates until it reaches fine-grained sediment, the water table, bedrock, or other penetration-limiting layers. Amounts of persistent oil are very small fractions of the volumes that were originally stranded and these protected residues can continue to biodegrade as they become thinner and more discontinuous. 相似文献

As the world's climate continues to change there is concern that this may cause malaria to spread to new areas. Here we examine whether past changes in temperature, in addition to social changes, may have affected malaria in England. Our analysis indicates that cold summers experienced during the 1800s may have contributed to the disappearance of this disease from the country. As our summers become progressively warner it is unlikely that malaria will become firmly re-established on these shores, although the possibility of future outbreaks should not be ignored. 相似文献

The Soft X-ray Telescope (SXT) of the SOLAR-A mission is designed to produce X-ray movies of flares with excellent angular and time resolution as well as full-disk X-ray images for general studies. A selection of thin metal filters provide a measure of temperature discrimination and aid in obtaining the wide dynamic range required for solar observing. The co-aligned SXT aspect telescope will yield optical images for aspect reference, white-light flare and sunspot studies, and, possibly, helioseismology. This paper describes the capabilities and characteristics of the SXT for scientific observing.After the launch the name of SOLAR-A has been changed to YOHKOH. 相似文献

Abstract— Grain size separates of the Cretaceous-Tertiary (K-T) fireball layer at marine sites and the entire K-T boundary interval at nonmarine sites (fireball layer, ejecta layer, coal seam) were analysed for platinum-group elements (PGE: Ru, Ir, Ft, Pd, Rh) and Au using inductively coupled plasma mass-spectrometry. X-ray diffractometry and scanning electron microscopy were performed on each fraction to establish the mineralogy. It was determined that the most abundant minerals in the finest fraction were a smectite-group mineral at marine K-T sites and illite-smectite mixed layer clay at nonmarine K-T sites. Positive correlation of PGE content and mineralogy indicates that the PGE are presently associated with these clay minerals which were likely formed by alteration of a condensed mafic phase (e.g., olivine or pyroxene). The correlation of clay mineral abundance with PGE content is imperfect because not all of the clay minerals in the fireball layer are derived by alteration of the original condensed ejecta. In addition, undetected PGE host(s), present in trace amounts, are likely also present. 相似文献

Multi-year nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) budgets were developed for the Patuxent River estuary, a seasonally stratified
and moderately eutrophic tributary of Chesapeake Bay. Major inputs (point, diffuse, septic, and direct atmospheric) were measured
for 13 years during which, large reductions in P and then lesser reductions in N-loading occurred due to wastewater treatment
plant improvements. Internal nutrient losses (denitrification and long-term burial of particulate N and P) were measured in
tidal marshes and sub-tidal sediments throughout the estuary as were nutrient storage in the water column, sediments, and
biota. Nutrient transport between the oligohaline and mesohaline zones and between the Patuxent and Chesapeake Bay was estimated
using a salt and water balance model. Several major nutrient recycling terms were directly and indirectly evaluated and compared
to new N and P inputs on seasonal and annual time-scales. Major findings included: (1) average terrestrial and atmospheric
inputs of N and P were very close to the sum of internal losses plus export, suggesting that dominant processes are captured
in these budgets; (2) both N and P export were a small fraction (13% and 28%, respectively) of inputs, about half of that
expected for N based on water residence times, and almost all exported N and P were in organic forms; (3) the tidal marsh-oligohaline
estuary, which by area comprised ~27% of the full estuarine system, removed about 46% and 74% of total annual upland N and
P inputs, respectively; (4) recycled N and P were much larger sources of inorganic nutrients than new inputs during warm seasons
and were similar in magnitude even during cold seasons; (5) there was clear evidence that major estuarine processes responded
rapidly to inter-annual nutrient input variations; (6) historical nutrient input data and nutrient budget data from drought
periods indicated that diffuse nutrient sources were dominant and that N loads need to be reduced by about 50% to restore

The West Victorian Uplands is a region of low relief, gentle gradients, young volcanicity and local domal uplift. These characteristics distinguish it from the rest of the Eastern Highlands of Australia. The origin of the West Victorian Uplands dates back to uplift in the Cretaceous, but elevation and relief have always remained low. Further uplift, extending westwards from central Victoria, may have begun raising the West Victorian Uplands in Middle Tertiary times. Doming, fault activity, earthquakes and volcanism are extending progressively westwards. Not only may the Eastern Highlands of Victoria have grown in this way in the past, but the area may also provide a view of the early evolution of the Eastern Highlands of Australia. 相似文献

The Salar de Atacama forms one of a series of forearc basins developed along the western flank of the Central Andes. Exposed along the northwest margin of the basin, a salt‐cored range, the Cordillera de la Sal, records the Mid‐Miocene to recent sedimentological and structural development of this basin. Sediments of the Mid‐Miocene Vilama Formation record the complex interaction between regional/local climate change, halokinesis and compressional deformation. This study reveals how these factors have controlled the facies development and distribution within the Salar de Atacama. Detailed sedimentary logging, cross‐sections and present day geomorphology through the northern Cordillera de la Sal have been used to establish a lithostratigraphy, chronostratigraphy and the regional distribution of the Vilama Formation. The Vilama Formation documents an increase in aridity with a hiatus in sedimentation from Mid‐Miocene to 9 Ma with initial uplift of the Cordillera de la Sal. From 9 Ma to 8.5 Ma deposition of a meandering fluvial system is recorded followed by a rapid decrease in sedimentation till 6 Ma. From 6 to 2 Ma, the deposition of extensive palustrine carbonates and distal alluvial–mudflat–lacustrine demonstrates the existence of an extensive lake within the Salar de Atacama. Post 2 Ma, the lake decreased in size and braided alluvial gravels associated with alluvial fans were widespread through the region suggesting a final shift to hyperarid conditions. By comparing the Vilama Formation with similar age facies throughout northern Chile and southern Peru, several shifts in climate are recognized. Climate signatures within northern Chile appear to be largely diachronous with the last regional event in the Mid‐Miocene. Since that time, humid events have been restricted to either Precordillerian basins or the Central Atacama. Within the Central Atacama, the final switch to hyperarid conditions was not till the earliest Pleistocene, much later than previously estimated within the region. 相似文献
