Two fluvial sediment cores taken from a floodplain of the Hawkesbury‐Nepean River system in the Sydney region, eastern Australia are dated using Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) to provide a reliable chronology essential for the management and planning of water resources. Nine charcoal 14C (AMS) dates constrain these OSL ages. Quartz extracted from seven OSL samples from each of the cores was measured using both single‐grain and multi‐grain OSL techniques. Three of the single‐grain natural dose distributions appear to be well bleached, but the others appear to be incompletely bleached to various degrees. Three minimum‐age models (MAM, MAMUL and IEU) are applied to the single‐grain dose distributions. We conclude that these models give consistent age estimates. For one of the cores it appears to be necessary to use a minimum‐age model to obtain accurate ages, but in the other core incomplete bleaching is probably less important than postdepositional mixing and mixing during sampling. As a result, the burial age is probably best estimated using the weighted average of the individual single‐grain dose estimates. The application of multi‐grain OSL techniques to these samples results in an average apparent age overestimation of ~200 years, which is significant for these samples, but negligible for sediments older than a few thousand years. The intention is that the chronology obtained in this study will be used in conjunction with a proxy flood record, derived from floodplain sediments, to gain an understanding of the long‐term variability in periods of high and low rainfall in eastern Australia.  相似文献

Modern and ancient tidal straits are the least well understood of all tide‐dominated depositional systems. To provide an increased understanding of these systems, a facies‐based depositional model is assessed by comparing multibeam surveys of three present‐day tidally dominated seaways with a number of superbly exposed Neogene‐to‐Quaternary strait‐fill successions of Calabria (south Italy). The model points out the existence of four depositional zones, laterally adjacent from the narrowest strait centre to its terminations, distributed along symmetrical or asymmetrical seaways. These zones, whose signature is recorded in four facies associations in the Calabrian tidal straits, are as follows: (i) the strait‐centre zone, associated with the tidal current maxima and where sediments are scarce or absent; (ii) the dune‐bedded zone, where sediments form dune complexes due to tidal flow expansion; (iii) the strait‐end zone, where currents decelerate accumulating thinly bedded, fine‐grained deposits; and (iv) the strait‐margin zone, where sediment massflows descend tectonically active, steep margins towards the strait axis. In ancient, tectonically confined, narrow seaways, these facies generate a distinctive deepening‐upward vertical succession, where tidal currents are the dominant process in the sediment distribution.  相似文献

The horizontal and vertical distribution of jellyfish was assessed in the Chiloé Inland sea, in the northern area of the Chilean Patagonia. A total of 41 species of cnidarians (8 siphonophores, 31 hydromedusae, 2 scyphomedusae) were collected. Eleven jellyfish species were recorded for the first time in the area. Species richness was higher in spring than in winter (37 vs. 25 species, respectively). Species such as Muggiaea atlantica, Solmundella bitentaculata, and Clytia simplex were extremely abundant in spring. The total abundance (408,157 ind 1000 m?3) was 18 times higher in spring than in winter (22,406 ind 1000 m?3).The horizontal distribution of the most abundant species (four in winter, five in spring) showed decreasing abundances in the north–south direction in winter and spring. Peak abundances occurred in the northern microbasins (Reloncaví Fjord, Reloncaví and Ancud gulfs), where the water column stability, phytoplankton and zooplankton abundance were higher, compared with the southern microbasins (Corcovado Gulf, Boca del Guafo). During the spring higher jellyfish abundance season, the vertical distribution of the dominant species (except M. atlantica) showed peak values at mid-depth (30–50 m) and in the deepest sampled layer (50–200 m). This vertical distribution pattern reduced seaward transport in the shallowest layer through estuarine circulation and also limited mortality by predation in the more illuminated shallow layers. Thus, jellyfish were able to remain in the interior waters during the season of maximum biological production.  相似文献

There is much evidence about the ancient presence of water on Mars and it is reasonable to suppose that simple forms of life may have developed during the geological evolution of the planet. In such a case traces of this extinct life could still be present on the planet in form of microfossils included into some geological layer. The rover payloads planned for the next decades will include spectrometers in order to accomplish various scientific tasks. In this respect, we have developed a quantitative model for microfossil inclusions into a crystalline matrix. Such a method foresees some visible effects on measurements obtained via spectroscopic techniques such as infrared reflectance and Raman spectroscopy. In this work we present the quantitative model of the fossilization process and the effects that the microfossil inclusions should have in the real spectra, evaluated by means of computer simulations. Preliminary measurements, in order to provide examples of future model testing, have been performed on samples of homogeneous composition, but with detectable microfossils content, collected at the K–T sequence placed near Gubbio (Italy). The preliminary results are presented and discussed in order to investigate the potential application of such spectroscopic techniques for the detection of extinct life.  相似文献

We present an efficient algorithm using a complex variables formulation for the computation of the gravity effect of 2D polygonal bodies having densities varying both laterally and with depth. The first derivatives of the gravity effect are also provided in order to enable the computation of the Jacobian matrix, which is necessary for linear inverse gravity problems. A geophysical example based on numerical assumptions about the density contrast on a well-studied basin area shows the applicability of the algorithm.  相似文献
