The structure of realgar, As4S4, and its evolution with pressure have been investigated employing in situ X-ray diffraction, optical absorption and vibrational spectroscopy on single-crystal samples in diamond-anvil cells. Compression under true hydrostatic conditions up to 5.40 GPa reveals equation-of-state parameters of V 0 = 799.4(2.4) Å3 and K 0 = 10.5(0.4) GPa with \(K_0^\prime\) = 8.7. The remarkably high compressibility can be attributed to a denser packing of the As4S4 molecules with shortening of the intermolecular bonds of up to 12 %, while the As4S4 molecules remain intact showing rigid-unit behaviour. From ambient pressure to 4.5 GPa, Raman spectra exhibit a strong blue shift of the Raman bands of the lattice-phonon regime of 24 cm–1, whereas frequencies from intramolecular As-S stretching modes show negligible or no shifts at all. On pressurisation, realgar shows a continuous and reversible colour change from bright orange over deep red to black. Optical absorption spectroscopy shows a shift of the absorption edge from 2.30 to 1.81 eV up to 4.5 GPa, and DFT calculations show a corresponding reduction in the band gap. Synchrotron-based measurements on polycrystalline samples up to 45.5 GPa are indexed according to the monoclinic structure of realgar.  相似文献

Advances in the chemical and isotopic characterisation of geological and environmental materials can often be ascribed to technological improvements in analytical hardware. Equally, the creation of novel methods of data acquisition and interpretation, including access to better reference materials, can also be crucial components enabling important breakthroughs. This biennial review highlights key advances in either instrumentation or data acquisition and treatment, which have appeared since January 2010. This review is based on the assessments by scientists prominent in each of the given analytical fields; it is not intended as an exhaustive summary, but rather provides insight from experts of the most significant advances and trends in their given field of expertise. In contrast to earlier reviews, this presentation has been formulated into a unified work, providing a single source covering a broad spectrum of geoanalytical techniques. Additionally, some themes that were not previously emphasised, in particular thermal ionisation mass spectrometry, accelerator‐based methods and vibrational spectroscopy, are also presented in detail.  相似文献

Apatite fission-track (FT) ages and track length distributions are important sources of information about the thermal histories of rocks. Recent advances in the understanding of track annealing in apatite provide a solution to the forward problem of predicting FT ages and track length distributions that result from a given thermal history. In this paper, a method is presented to address the inverse problem—estimation of the thermal history from FT data. The inverse method uses an iterative approach (the downhill simplex) to systematically modify a starting thermal history to achieve satisfactory statistical agreement between the predicted and observed FT age and track length distribution. However, because of analytical uncertainties, a unique thermal history does not exist. Monte Carlo simulations are used to take into account the uncertainties in the data and yield a spectrum of possible thermal histories. The results are based on the isothermal annealing model of Laslett et al. ([1], Chem. Geol. Isot. Geosci. Sect., Vol. 65) but because the method uses forward predictions and not an analytical formula specific to a single annealing model, alternative annealing models could be used within the same framework. This method is an improvement in interpreting fission-track data because the range of thermal histories permitted by the data can be evaluated.To demonstrate the method, it is applied to several sets of test data created by forward modeling of idealized thermal histories. The results show that the age at which the sample cooled through its closure temperature and the most general features of the thermal history are revealed. However, data from partially annealed samples have wide spectra that reflect large uncertainties in the form of the thermal history. For such samples, FT data alone are not likely to provide strong tests of geologic hypotheses. Conversely, geologic information may play a crucial role in constraining the thermal history spectrum. In application to uplift-related cooling, this inverse method can provide much more realistic assessments of the cooling rate and its uncertainty than are otherwise possible.  相似文献

An accumulation terrace close to the El'gygytgyn Impact Crater in northeastern Siberia contains stratigraphic and periglacial evidence of the paleoenvironmental and paleoclimatic history and permafrost dynamics during late Quaternary time. A succession of paleo active-layer deposits that mirror environmental changes records periods favorable for the establishment and growth of ice-wedge polygonal networks and sediment variations. These two elements of the periglacial landscape serve as complementary paleoenvironmental archives that can be traced back to ∼ 14,000 cal yr BP. The slope sediments and the ground ice contained therein have prominent relative maxima and minima in properties (grain size, total organic content, oxygen isotopes). They document a regional early Holocene thermal maximum at about 9000 cal yr BP, followed by a transition to slightly cooler conditions, and a subsequent transition to slightly warmer conditions after about 4000 cal yr BP. Results from sedimentary analysis resemble morphological and geochemical (oxygen and hydrogen isotopes) results from ice wedge studies, in which successive generations of ice-wedge polygonal networks record warmer winters in late Holocene time. Moreover, peaks of light soluble cation contents and quartz-grain surface textures reveal distinct traces of cryogenic weathering. We propose a conclusive sedimentation model illustrating terrace formation in a permafrost terrain.  相似文献

Annealing of the radiation damage generated in !-decay events is a common phenomenon in natural zircons. We have studied relationships between radiation damage, age and radionuclide content of natural zircons on a micro-scale. The degree of metamictisation was estimated by means of confocal laser-Raman spectroscopic measurements. Raman band broadening in well-ordered to moderately metamict zircons that have not experienced significant healing of the radiation damage since the time of their growth, shows a nearly linear dependence on the !-fluence. This dependence is proposed as a calibration line for examining unknown zircons in order to consider complete or incomplete damage storage, which may contribute to the understanding of the low-T thermal history of their host rocks. Seven examples for the application are presented. Radiation damage may anneal heterogeneously, with preferred re-ordering in more damaged micro-areas. Results suggest that single point defects do not anneal continuously over geologic periods of time but are, in contrast, a comparably stable type of radiation damage. In contrast to recrystallisation processes, structural recovery due to simple thermal annealing is not necessarily connected with loss of radiogenic Pb. The most prominent example for this are concordant zircons from Sri Lanka. Although they are excellent standards for U-Pb dating, Sri Lankan zircons should not be used as standards for structural radiation damage. The experimental work is completed by Monte Carlo simulations of !-decay events in zircon.  相似文献

The forthcoming World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) in Johannesburg (August 26-September 4, 2002) has been set by the United Nations to consider strategies toward sustainable development in all its dimensions. Hence, its mandate is broader than that of the Rio 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED). Population issues have so far been discussed in a separate series of World Population Conferences (Bucharest 1974, Mexico City 1984, Cairo 1994). With no new World Population Conference scheduled for 2004 and Johannesburg having a mandate that is stated to explicitly include social and economic aspects, population as a key component of sustainable development should figure prominently on the Johannesburg agenda. Yet, after the third of four preparatory meetings for Johannesburg (which ended in New York on April 5th), consideration of population is completely absent. The reasons for this are not entirely clear. We assume that they have to do with the fear of entering into political controversies over abortion. We are concerned that, despite its broader mandate, in most countries inputs to Johannesburg are being prepared mainly by environment ministries who have little experience in dealing with population questions. Pressure-induced changes of Raman band parameters of four natural, gem-quality zircon samples with different degrees of self-irradiation damage, and synthetic ZrSiO4 without radiation damage, have been studied under hydrostatic compression in a diamond anvil cell up to ~10 GPa. Radiation-damaged zircon shows similar up-shifts of internal SiO4 stretching modes at elevated pressures as non-damaged ZrSiO4. Only minor changes of band-widths were observed in all cases. This makes it possible to estimate the degree of radiation damage from the width of the ν3(SiO4) band of zircon inclusions in situ, almost independent from potential “fossilized pressures” or compressive strain acting on the inclusions. An application is the non-destructive analysis of gemstones such as corundum or spinel: broadened Raman bands are a reliable indicator of self-irradiation damage in zircon inclusions, whose presence allows one to exclude artificial color enhancement by high-temperature treatment of the specimen.  相似文献

Agate/chalcedony samples of different origin were investigated by performing Raman, X-ray diffraction (using Rietveld refinement), and cathodoluminescence measurements. These analyses were performed to measure the content and spatial distribution of the silica polymorph moganite, which is considered to represent periodic Brazil-law twinning of α-quartz at the unit-cell scale in agate/chalcedonies. Homogeneous standard samples including the nearly α-quartz free moganite type material from Gran Canaria were analysed in order to compare results of the X-ray diffractometry and Raman spectroscopy techniques and to provide a calibration curve for the Raman results. However, due to the different length scales analysed by the two techniques, the “moganite content” in microcrystalline SiO2 samples measured by Raman spectroscopy (short-range order) was found to be considerably higher than the “moganite content” measured by X-ray diffractometry (long-range order). The difference is explained by the presence of moganite nanocrystals, nano-range moganite lamellae, and single Brazil-law twin-planes that are detected by vibrational spectroscopy but that are not large enough (in the sense of coherently scattering lattice domains) to be detected by X-ray diffractometry. High resolution Raman analysis provides a measure of the moganite content and its spatial variation in microcrystalline silica samples with a lateral resolution in the μm-range. Variations in the moganite-to-quartz ratio are revealed by varying intensity ratios of the main symmetric stretching-bending vibrations (A1 modes) of α-quartz (465 cm−1) and moganite (502 cm−1), respectively. Traces of Raman microprobe analyses perpendicular to the rhythmic zoning of agates revealed that the moganite-to-quartz ratio is often not uniform but shows a cyclic pattern that correlates with the observed cathodoluminescence pattern (colour and intensity). Data obtained from an agate sample from a fluorite deposit near Okorusu, Namibia and from a volcanic agate from Los Indios, Cuba were selected for detailed presentation. Variations of cathodoluminescence and Raman data between single bands in agates suggest alternating formation of fine-grained, highly defective chalcedony intergrown with moganite, and coarse-grained low-defect quartz. Multiple zones indicate dynamic internal growth during a self-organizational crystallization process from silica-rich fluids. Received: 4 December 1997 / Accepted 19 June 1998  相似文献
