Spectral invariants provide a novel approach for characterizing canopy structure in forest reflectance models and for mapping biophysical variables using satellite images. We applied a photon recollision probability (p) based forest reflectance model (PARAS) to retrieve leaf area index (LAI) from fine resolution SPOT HRVIR and Landsat ETM+ satellite data. First, PARAS was parameterized using an extensive database of LAI-2000 measurements from five conifer-dominated boreal forest sites in Finland, and mixtures of field-measured forest understory spectra. The selected vegetation indices (e.g. reduced simple ratio, RSR), neural networks and kNN method were used to retrieve effective LAI (Le) based on reflectance model simulations. For comparison, we established empirical vegetation index-LAI regression models for our study sites. The empirical RSR–Le regression performed best when applied to an independent test site in southern Finland [RMSE 0.57 (24.2%)]. However, the difference to the best reflectance model based retrievals produced by neural networks was only marginal [RMSE 0.59 (25.1%)]. According to this study, the PARAS model provides a simple and flexible modelling tool for calibrating algorithms for LAI retrieval in conifer-dominated boreal forests. The advantage of PARAS is that it directly uses field measurements to parameterize canopy structure (LAI-2000, hemispherical photographs) and optical properties of foliage and understory.  相似文献

Several long sediment cores (max. 12 m) from various parts (up to 150 km apart) of Lake Onega, Russian Karelia, have been studied for lithology, varve chronology and palaeomagnetism. The two longest varve records from the central basin contain 1300 varves. These indicate the length of the deglaciation period from these localities to the north of Lake Onega, where the drainage of glacial meltwaters was directed towards the White Sea and the deposition of varves in the Onega basin terminated. An estimate of the duration of deglaciation of the whole Onega basin is 1500 years. Natural remanent magnetization (NRM) is strong and stable in these sediments and accurately records changes in the Earth's magnetic field. A distinct change in the magnetic field, when the declination shifted from east to west by at least 60° in 350 varve years, is clearly identifiable in all cores. This palaeomagnetic feature was used for core to core correlation together with other variations in magnetic parameters and widely distributed lithological marker horizons. On the basis of the correlations between the cores and calibration of AMS radiocarbon dates from varves obtained from the northern archipelago of Lake Onega, the age of the westerly declination peak is dated to 13 090 cal. BP and accordingly the deglaciation of the Onega basin took place between 14 250 and 12 750±100 cal. BP. The westerly declination peak was also recognized earlier by Bakhmutov and Zagniy in the Helylä varved clay sequence near Sortavala on the northern shore of Lake Ladoga. Helylä is situated outside the Salpausselkä end moraines and the accumulation of varved clays continued there 1500 years after the declination peak, up until the drainage of the Baltic Ice Lake, which more or less coincides with the ice margin retreat from Salpausselkä II end moraine and the termination of the Younger Dryas event. The date thus arrived at for this event is 11 590±100 cal. BP, close to the recent results from Greenland ice cores and from varved lake sediments and tree rings from Central Europe. It is further suggested that the formation of the major Younger Dryas end moraines, the Finnish Salpausselkä I and Salpausselkä II and their correlatives in Russian Karelia, took place between 12 250 and 11 590 calendar years ago, clearly earlier than earlier estimated through correlation with the Swedish varve chronology.  相似文献

Spectroradiometer measurements of solar radiation (the broadest band used 400–900 nm) were performed above and inside the surface snow layer in western Dronning Maud Land, Antarctica, during the austral summer of 2009–2010. The vertical distributions of transmittance and the extinction coefficient were examined from the surface to a depth of 30 cm. Physical characterization of the snowpack included measurements of thickness, density, hardness (hand test), liquid-water content, and grain size and shape (from photographs of grains). The transmittance was <1% in the upper 20 cm and <27% in the upper 10 cm. The mean spectral diffuse extinction coefficient varied between 0.04 and 0.31 cm-1 (10–20-cm layer). Using the spectral extinction coefficients of the 0–10-cm and 10–20-cm layers, the depth, where broadband (400–700-nm band) irradiance was 1% of the downwelling irradiance at the surface, was 50 cm. The density of the snow in the upper part of the snowpack (depth of 0–55 cm) varied from 300 to 440 kg m?3. The predominant grain type was large rounded particles (RGlr) and the predominant grain size was 1 mm.  相似文献

Two uranium-bearing phosphatic metasedimentary occurrences at Lampinsaari, Vihanti and Temo, Nilsiä, in Finland have been dated by isotopic UPb analyses of whole rock samples to be 1876±2 Ma old. The dates reflect the time of the Svecokarelian regional metamorphism in high amphibolite facies. An analysis of a uranium thucolite from the deposit at Nuottijärvi, Paltamo, that was metamorphosed in intermediate greenschist facies gives a date of 1897±7 Ma, suggesting that the phosphatic sedimentation had occurred before that time. An upper time limit for the sedimentation is set by a previous date of 2080±45 Ma, which was obtained from a banded iron one formation. The absence of thorium in the deposits suggests a marine environment of deposition.  相似文献

A sharp decrease in total suspended solids (TSS) concentration has occurred in the Mekong River after the closure of the Manwan Dam in China in 1993, the first of a planned cascade of eight dams. This paper describes the upstream developments on the Mekong River, concentrating on the effects of hydropower dams and reservoirs. The reservoir-related changes in total suspended solids, suspended sediment concentration (SSC), and hydrology have been analyzed, and the impacts of such possible changes on the Lower Mekong Basin discussed. The theoretical trapping efficiency of the proposed dams has been computed and the amount of sediment to be trapped in the reservoirs estimated. The reservoir trapping of sediments and the changing of natural flow patterns will impact the countries downstream in this international river basin. Both positive and negative possible effects of such impacts have been reviewed, based on the available data from the Mekong and studies on other basins.  相似文献

Several Eemian (Mikulino) marine deposits are known from the northwestern part of Russia and from Estonia. The best-known deposits are situated at Mga, Russia and at Prangli, Estonia. Two new sites with clayey and silty deposits covered by till were studied for pollen and diatoms at Peski, Russia and Põhja-Uhtju, Estonia. At Peski, the deposit representing the Eemian Interglacial is 3.8 m thick at the depth of 13.4–9.6 m above present sea-level. At Põhja-Uhtju, the deposit representing the Eemian is 3.5 m thick at the depth of 47.9–51.4 m below present sea-level. Although Peski is situated at a higher altitude than Põhja-Uhtju at present, the diatom stratigraphy at these sites indicates deeper and more saline conditions in the Peski area than at Põhja-Uhtju during the Eemian. This result is similar to some previous studies, which indicate, that although the Russian deposits (e.g. Peski, Mga) are now at a higher altitude than those in Estonia (Põhja-Uhtju and Prangli), the diatoms in the Russian deposits are indicative of a considerable depth of water during the time of deposition. These deposits suggest that the Eemian shore levels ascend from Estonia eastwards, while the Late Weichselian and Holocene shorelines tilt downwards in the same general direction. The present material from Estonia and northwestern part of Russia shows marked differences between the Eemian and Late Weichselian/Holocene crustal deformations, which probably resulted from different ice loads during the final glaciation phases and probably also from different deglaciation patterns during the Saalian and Late Weichselian.  相似文献
