Three central Arctic Ocean sediment cores were sampled for percentage carbonate, number of foraminifera, and texture. These three parameters were used in spectral analyses to test the idea that the ice-covered Arctic Ocean may respond to orbital forcing in a different manner than has been indicated for lower latitude ice-free oceans. The record for two of the cores represents approximately 1 my, and the record for the third, approximately 400,000 yr. The 100,000-yr frequency is well represented in all of the cores. A 40,000-yr frequency may be present, as well. An unexpected 70,000-yr frequency occurs in most of the spectra and may reflect nonlinear sedimentation rates or the combined effect of obliquity and eccentricity. The strong 100,000-yr signal confirms that, in spite of ice feedback, the Arctic Ocean has responded to orbital forcing in much the same manner as have ice-free oceans.

The regulation of the national marine radio service is performed by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). This paper discusses the evolution of the Commission, the impact of national and international factors on regulatory matters, and the administration processes which describe the procedures for promulgating rules and regulations. The competitive pressures for the available radio spectrum, effects of existing precedents, and the impact of new technology on the rule making process is described with particular emphasis on automated VHF radiotelephone systems being developed for maritime use. The introduction of this service is considered in terms of the problems posed vis-a-vis compatibility requirements, signaling techniques, frequency utilization, impact on existing stations, and system considerations.

Abstract

It is shown that, even for vanishingly small diffusivities of momentum and heat, a rotating stratified zonal shear flow is more unstable to zonally symmetric disturbances than would be indicated by the classical inviscid adiabatic criterion, unless σ, the Prandtl number, = 1. Both monotonic instability, and growing oscillations ("overstability") are involved, the former determining the stability criterion and having the higher growth rates. The more σ differs from 1, the larger the region in parameter space for which the flow is stable by the classical criterion, but actually unstable.

If the baroclinity is sufficiently great for the classical criterion also to indicate instability, the corresponding inviscid adiabatic modes usually have the numerically highest growth rates. An exception is the case of small isotherm slope and small σ.

A single normal mode of the linearized theory is also, formally, a finite amplitude solution; however, no theoretical attempt is made to assess the effect of finite amplitude in general. But, in a following paper, viscous overturning (the mechanism giving rise to the sub‐classical monotonic instability when σ > 1) is shown to play an important role at finite amplitude in certain examples of nonlinear steady thermally‐driven axisymmetric flow of water in a rotating annulus. Irrespective of whether analogous mechanisms turn out to be identifiable and important in large‐scale nature, it appears then that a Prandtl‐type parameter should enter the discussion of any attempt to make laboratory or numerical models of zonally‐symmetric baroclinic geophysical or astrophysical flows.

There is growing recognition among ecologists that ecosystem engineers play important roles in creating habitat for other species, but the comparative and combined effects of co-existing engineers are not well known. Here, we evaluated the separate and interactive effects of two burrowing rodents, Gunnison's prairie dogs (Cynomys gunnisoni) and banner-tailed kangaroo rats (Dipodomys spectabilis), on lizards in the Chihuahuan Desert grassland (USA). We found that the mounds and burrow systems of both rodent species provided important habitat for lizards, with lizard abundance being 2 to 4-fold higher on mounds than in adjacent areas without mounds. Kangaroo rat mounds supported greater numbers of lizards than prairie dog mounds, but the prairie dog colony with kangaroo rats supported 2-times more lizards than the landscape with only kangaroo rats. A greater number of mound habitats were available for lizards where prairie dogs and kangaroo rats co-occurred, and the rodents created unique structural mound types with different spatial distributions on the landscape. Our results demonstrate the importance of burrowing rodents in creating habitat for other animals, and that the combined effect of ecosystem engineers, especially those with large ecological roles, can be complementary and additive in areas where they co-occur.

Drying-rewetting pulses stimulate nitrogen (N) mineralization in semi-arid systems and enhance N availability. Intermittent stream landscapes encompass a mosaic of soils of different textures and composition, and may support intense N transformation after rainfall. We modelled N mineralization potential by measuring accumulation of inorganic N (KCl extractable NO3? and NH4+) in response to sustained flooding in soils from a small intermittent stream in semi-arid, north-west Australia. To test the relative importance of landscape position compared to flood pulse size, we incubated soils and sediments from six landscape positions, including three riparian vegetation types, rewetted to four different water potentials. Selected water potentials represented a light rain, heavy rain, single flood and successive flood event for the study site. The total amount of N mineralized was significantly affected by landscape position but not by saturation level. Riparian soils produced the greatest mineralization flush – over 70% of the total amount of N mineralized accumulated within 48 h of rewetting – however there was no difference among riparian vegetation types in N mineralization potential. N mineralized was a half to two-thirds lower in channel, floodplain and bank soils in comparison with riparian soils. We conclude that in systems subject to prolonged drought, N mineralization is predominantly determined by soil characteristics rather than the size of the rewetting pulse.

Summary The late Archaean Munni Munni Complex occupies an elliptical area of 9 by 25 km, the southern half of which is covered unconformably by a 2.7 Ga volcanic sequence. The Complex consists of a lower 1850 m thick Ultramafic Series (UMS) and an upper Gabbroic Series (GS) at least 3600 m thick, and is in the form of an elongate funnel. The UMS is made up of macrorhythmic cycles of dunite, wehrlite and clinopyroxenite, while the GS shows an uninterrupted fractionation trend from pigeonite gabbros through pigeonite-magnetite gabbros to granophyres. The base of the GS is very sharp, and marked by simultaneous appearance of cumulus plagioclase and pigeonite. GS cumulates show a monotonous upward increase in Fe/Mg and an absence of cyclic layering, indicating crystallization in a closed chamber. The top of the UMS is a distinctive 30 m thick layer of bronzite-porphyritic orthocumulate websterite, which continues up the side walls as a marginal zone in contact with progressively more fractionated gabbros. A pyroxenite dyke intersects the sloping floor of the intrusion at a level close to the top of the UMS, and appears to have fed the uppermost layers of the UMS.Cu-rich magmatic sulphides are weakly disseminated throughout the porphyritic websterite layer, increasing in abundance to 1–3% in a semi-continuous augite orthocumulate layer a few metres below the gabbro. This layer extends over 8.2 km, averages 2.5 m in thickness, and has an average grade of 2.9 g/t Pt + Pd + Au, 0.2% Ni and 0.3% Cu with local higher grade zones. In about 40% of intersections, peak PGE, Au, Cu and Ni grades are coincident, while in the remainder peak PGE grades are offset about 1–2 m below the peak Cu and Ni grades.Coincident intersections are probably derived by homogenization of original offset intersections. Peak PGE grades become lower and more widely dispersed farther away from the intrusion walls.PGE-enriched sulphides also occur close to the websterite-gabbro contact where the websterite occupies a marginal position on the side wall. The marginal websterite zone and the porphyritic websterite layer are physically contiguous and petrographically similar, and are probably correlative.Microprobe data on cumulus pyroxenes indicate that the porphyritic websterite layer crystallised from a mixture of a relatively Mg- and Cr-rich M magma, parental to the Ultramafic Series, and an Fe-rich, strongly Cr-depleted gabbroic G magma. Pyroxenes from the PGE horizon are very low in Cr, suggesting that they crystallised from a G-rich hybrid. The websterite formed as a result of an influx of dense G magma which mixed with hotter resident M magma. The upper few metres of the websterite, including the PGE-rich sulphides, accumulated during a period of quiescence at the end of the influx phase. The PGE-rich sulphides formed by fractional segregation of sulphide liquid from a 500 to 1000 m thick layer of silicate magma.Munni Munni PGE mineralisation shows some striking similarities to that of the Great Dyke, particularly in the stratigraphic position of the mineralisation, the vertical distribution of PGE through the sulphide layer, and the lateral distribution of grades.

We present a large-scale quantitative test of a hyperspectral remote-sensing reflectance algorithm. We show that coastal bathymetry can be adequately derived through model inversions using data from the Airborne Visible-Infrared Imaging Spectrometer instrument. Data are analyzed from a shore-perpendicular transect 5 km offshore Sarasota, Florida at water depths ranging from 10 m to 15.5 m. Derived bottom depths are compared to a high-resolution multibeam bathymetry survey. Model-derived depths are biased 4.9% shallower than the mean of the multibeam depths with an RMS error of 7.83%. These results suggest that the model performs well for retrieving bottom depths from hyperspectral data in subtropical coastal areas in water depths ranging from 10 m to 15.5 m.

The quantification of percolation processes and deep drainage rates in cracking clays is challenging due to the existence of multiple flow pathways, including desiccation crack networks, and the effect of variability in antecedent soil moisture and rain event properties. While most previous research on this topic focuses on long-term average rates, this study focusses on inter-event dynamics. The study uses data from soil moisture sensors distributed vertically down 4 m profiles of Vertosol and Chromosol soils across 13 sites over an area of approximately 20 km2. The objectives were to estimate the temporal and spatial variability of deep drainage rates and to investigate the effect of antecedent soil moisture conditions and rain event properties on deep drainage rates and percolation dynamics. 35 deep drainage events over a 40-month period contributed 78 % of the total deep drainage of 254 mm at 4 m depth. Average deep drainage estimates were about 15 % (ranging from 0 – 80 % between sites) of total rainfall and irrigation in the Vertosol and 8% (0 – 24 %) in the Chromosol. The event water travel times at 4 m depth were 0.25 – 38 hr and 14 – 39 hr in the Vertosol and Chromosol respectively. The event deep drainage rates averaged across sites were associated with event rainfall volumes (linear regression R2 = 0.40), with the effect of antecedent conditions evident only when looking at inter-site differences. The percolation response time was strongly associated with higher rainfall intensities (R2 = 0.33) with no evidence from the linear regression of an antecedent moisture effect.
