Abstract— We examined an improved system for extraction of carbon from meteorites, using a vacuum‐tight RF melting method. Meteorite samples mixed with an iron combustion accelerator, including a specific amount of carbon (0.052%), were combusted in a RF furnace (LECO HF‐10). 14CO2 extracted from the meteorite was diluted with a known amount of nearly 14C‐free CO2, evolved from the iron accelerator on combustion. The 14C activities of the recently fallen Holbrook (L6) and Mt. Tazerzait (L5) meteorites were measured by this method. The mean value was 56.5 ± 3.0 dpm/kg, which is similar to the values reported for recently fallen L6 chondrites. Furthermore, terrestrial ages were measured for four Antarctic meteorites: 1.8 ± 0.5 kyr for Yamato (Y‐) 75097 (L6), 1.8 ± 0.5 kyr for Y‐75108 (L6), and 0.1 ± 0.1 kyr for Y‐74192 (H5). For Y‐74190 (L6), an apparent age of 0.8 ± 0.5 kyr was calculated. After consideration of the shielding effect by using 22Ne/21Ne values, we obtained about 1.8 kyr for the terrestrial age of this chondrite. The five samples Y‐74190, Y‐75097, and Y‐75108, together with Y‐75102 (L6) and Y‐75271 (L6), have been reported to be paired and fragments of an L‐chondrite shower (Honda 1981; Takaoka 1987). The result of this work and literature data for the latter two samples confirmed that they are paired. More discussion and experimental work are needed for other recently fallen meteorites, both for L and H chondrites, and a correction for the shielding effect should be done to determine a more reliable terrestrial age.  相似文献

To improve the scaling parameter controlling the impact crater formation in the strength regime, we conducted impact experiments on sintered snow targets with the dynamic strength continuously changed from 20 to 200 kPa, and the largest crater size formed on small icy satellites was considered by using the revised scaling parameter. Ice and snow projectiles were impacted on a snow surface with 36% porosity at an impact velocity from 31 m s−1 to 150 m s−1. The snow target was sintered at the temperature from −5 °C to −18 °C, and the snow dynamic strength was changed with the sintering duration at each temperature. We found that the mass ejected from the crater normalized by the projectile mass, πV, was related to the ratio of the dynamic strength to the impact pressure, , as follows: , where the impact pressure was indicated by P = ρtC0tvi/2 with the target density of ρt, when the impact velocity, vi, was much smaller than the bulk sound velocity C0t (typically 1.8 km s−1 in our targets). The ratio of the largest crater diameter to the diameter of the target body, dmax/D, was estimated by calculating the crater diameter at the impact condition for catastrophic disruption and then compared to the observed dmax/D of jovian and saturnian small satellites, in order to discuss the formation condition of these large dmax/D in the strength regime.  相似文献

Laboratory impact experiments were conducted for gypsum-glass bead targets simulating the parent bodies of ordinary chondrites. The effects of the chondrules included in the parent bodies on impact disruption were experimentally investigated in order to determine the impact conditions for the formation of rubble-pile bodies after catastrophic disruption. The targets included glass beads with a diameter ranging from 100 μm to 3 mm and the volume fraction was 0.6, similar to that of ordinary chondrites, which is about 0.65-0.75. Nylon projectiles with diameters of 10 mm and 2 mm were impacted at 60-180 m s−1 by a single-stage gas gun and at 4 km s−1 by a two-stage light gas gun, respectively. The impact strength of the gypsum-glass bead target was found to range from 56 to 116 J kg−1 depending on the glass bead size, and was several times smaller than that of the porous gypsum target, 446 J kg−1 in low-velocity collisions. The impact strengths of the 100 μm bead target and the porous gypsum target strongly depended on the impact velocity: those obtained in high-velocity collisions were several times greater than those obtained in low-velocity collisions. The velocities of fragments ejected from two corners on the impact surface of the target, measured in the center of the mass system, were slightly dependent on the target materials, irrespective of impact velocity. These results suggest that chondrule-including planetesimals (CiPs) can reconstruct rubble-pile bodies in catastrophic disruptions at the size of the planetesimal smaller than that of planetesimals without chondrules.  相似文献

To study the accretional growth of rimmed chondrules and their agglomerates in the solar nebula, we measured the restitution coefficients, ε, and the sticking velocities to a porous silica layer, vc, by impacting the silica layer with a glass ball at velocities from 0.1 to 80 m s?1. We used a porous silica layer covering a basalt block with thicknesses ranging from 1/5 of the glass ball radius to equal to the glass ball radius as a rimmed chondrule analogue, and the porosity of the silica layer was set to be 70%, 80%, 85%, and 90%. Collisional experiments were conducted by means of the free fall method or by the use of a spring gun or a gas gun, allowing us to vary the impact velocity. We used a laser displacement meter to estimate the impact and rebound velocities as well as the acceleration during the collision at impact velocities below 1 m s?1. As a result, the sticking velocity, vc, of 90%- and 85%- porosity layers with a thickness equal to 1/2 of the glass ball diameter was 0.44 and 2.4 m s?1, respectively. On the other hand, we found a distinct barrier to sticking for smaller-porosity layers: the silicate layer with a porosity smaller than 80% never exhibited sticking at any impact velocity below 1 m s?1. Instead, we observed a rebound effect with restitution coefficients larger than 0.2. In the case of a silica layer with a porosity smaller than 80%, we observed the sub-sticking condition defined by ε < 0.1 at velocities extending from 5 m s?1 to 70 m s?1.  相似文献

To clarify the effect of a surface regolith layer on the formation of craters in bedrock, we conducted impact-cratering experiments on two-layered targets composed of a basalt block covered with a mortar layer. A nylon projectile was impacted on the targets at velocities of 2 and 4 km s?1, and we investigated the crater size formed on the basalt. The crater size decreased with increased mortar thickness and decreased projectile mass and impact velocity. The normalized crater volume, πV, of all the data was successfully scaled by the following exponential equation with a reduction length λ0: πV=b0πY-b1exp(-λ/λ0), where λ is the normalized thickness T/Lp, T and Lp are the mortar thickness and the projectile length, respectively, b0 and b1 are fitted parameters obtained for a homogeneous basalt target, 10?2.7±0.7 and ?1.4 ± 0.3, respectively, and λ0 is obtained to be 0.38 ± 0.03. This empirical equation showing the effect of the mortar layer was physically explained by an improved non-dimensional scaling parameter, πY1, defined by πY1=Y/(ρtup2), where up was the particle velocity of the mortar layer at the boundary between the mortar and the basalt. We performed the impact experiments to obtain the attenuation rate of the particle velocity in the mortar layer and derived the empirical equation of upvi=0.50exp-λ1.03, where vi is the impact velocity of the projectile. We propose a simple model for the crater formation on the basalt block that the surface mortar layer with the impact velocity of up collides on the surface of the basalt block, and we confirmed that this model could reproduce our empirical equation showing the effect of the surface layer on the crater volume of basalt.  相似文献

Various types of endocrine disruptors or environmental hormones flow from their sources down into harbours through rivers and other watercourses, and are accumulated in sediment on the sea bottom. Tributyltin, which has been used as paint for ship bottoms, is considered one of the endocrine disruptors.In close cooperation with the other ministries and agencies, the Ports and Harbours Bureau of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport carried out an investigation in 1999 to determine the actual condition of 12 endocrine disruptors in the sediment of 39 harbours, in order to gather fundamental data to be used in future examinations of policy. Furthermore, in 2000 the bureau chose seven harbours out of the above 39 harbours as subjects of an additional investigation regarding the surface distribution of endocrine disruptors in the harbour areas and the synchronistic change of accumulation of dioxin and other substances. As the result of the investigation regarding the surface distribution of endocrine disruptors accumulated in seven harbours, relatively high concentrations were measured in the innermost parts of harbours and the mouths of rivers. Synchronistic changes in the amount of dioxin and other substances accumulated in sediments of five harbours were determined. Small amounts of dioxin and other substances, including an especially small amount of coplanar-PCBs, were found in the layers formed before or around 1950. Relatively large amounts of these substances were measured in the upper layers formed during roughly 1960-1990, though no significant yearly differences in concentration could be identified. This result coincides with the facts that, during roughly 1960-1980, PCP and CNP were used as agricultural chemicals and full-scale production of PCBs started in 1960.  相似文献

A high-resolution bathymetric survey of the entire underwater slope in South Baikal was carried out for the first time by means of the multibeam echosounder. New elements were revealed in the underwater relief of the southern slope of the basin from the Kultuchnaya river to the Mysovka river, and a relevant regionalization was carried out into three areas according to the presence of ancient landforms and the intensity of the processes of their reworking, with the boundaries along the delta-front and the river fan of the Utulik and Pereemnaya. We reconstructed the formation process of the modern relief of this area of the underwater slope and determined a dominant role of the underwater-erosion processes in the formation of the modern relief, with the tectonic movements served as the “trigger” for them. The study revealed a direct correlation between the reworking of the ancient geomorphological surfaces and the occurrence of separate large underwater elevations or group ridges (remnants), canyons and linear depressions. It is determined that the pivotal role in the appearance of the modern relief of the underwater slope in the second area of extensive plano-convex (in section) and fan-shaped (in plan) delta-fronts of large rivers and debris fans enveloping the remnants. The existence of a steep underwater slope from the mouth of the Pereemnaya to the mouth of the Bol’shaya Tel’naya and of two large benches, and also the proximity of the maximum depths of the southern basin at the foot of this slope are explained by a more intense step-like lowering of this part of the lake when compared with the western part of the basin. This also accounts for the absence of large remnants in this part of the slope. The area of occurrence of lacustrine-fluvial and lacustrine-delta deposits of the Tankhoi paleobasin within the southern basin of Baikal is reconstructed. Four new hydrate-bearing structures associated with these deposits and morphologically pronounced in the vertex parts of the remnants were discovered. The morphological exploration indicators of the presence of new accumulations of gas hydrates on the underwater slopes of Baikal have been expanded.  相似文献

Agricultural cropping and animal production systems are important sources of atmospheric nitrous oxide (N2O). The assessment of the importance of N fertilization from synthetic fertilizer, animal wastes used as fertilizers and from N incorporated into the soil through biological N fixation, to global N2O emissions presented in this paper suggests that this source has been underestimated. We estimate that agricultural systems produce about one fourth of global N2O emissions. Methods of mitigating these emissions are presented which, if adopted globally could decrease annual N2O emissions from cropped soils by about 20%.  相似文献
