Precise specification of the vertical distribution of cloud optical properties is important to reduce the uncertainty in quantifying the radiative impacts of clouds. The new global observations of vertical profiles of clouds from the CloudSat mission provide opportunities to describe cloud structures and to improve parameterization of clouds in the weather and climate prediction models. In this study, four years (2007–2010) of observations of vertical structure of clouds from the CloudSat cloud profiling radar have been used to document the mean vertical structure of clouds associated with the Indian summer monsoon (ISM) and its intra-seasonal variability. Active and break monsoon spells associated with the intra-seasonal variability of ISM have been identified by an objective criterion. For the present analysis, we considered CloudSat derived column integrated cloud liquid and ice water, and vertically profiles of cloud liquid and ice water content. Over the South Asian monsoon region, deep convective clouds with large vertical extent (up to 14 km) and large values of cloud water and ice content are observed over the north Bay of Bengal. Deep clouds with large ice water content are also observed over north Arabian Sea and adjoining northwest India, along the west coast of India and the south equatorial Indian Ocean. The active monsoon spells are characterized by enhanced deep convection over the Bay of Bengal, west coast of India and northeast Arabian Sea and suppressed convection over the equatorial Indian Ocean. Over the Bay of Bengal, cloud liquid water content and ice water content is enhanced by ~90 and ~200 % respectively during the active spells. An interesting feature associated with the active spell is the vertical tilting structure of positive CLWC and CIWC anomalies over the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal, which suggests a pre-conditioning process for the northward propagation of the boreal summer intra-seasonal variability. It is also observed that during the break spells, clouds are not completely suppressed over central India. Instead, clouds with smaller vertical extent (3–5 km) are observed due to the presence of a heat low type of circulation. The present results will be useful for validating the vertical structure of clouds in weather and climate prediction models.  相似文献

Drilling fluids are used for drilling natural gas, oil and water wells. These spill over into the surrounding soil at the point of drilling, which may impair soil health. A laboratory investigation was carried out to determine the effect of non aqueous drilling fluid (NADF) and synthetic base oil used with it on soil health as indicated by the dehydrogenase activity. A non-sterile sandy loam soil was treated with different amounts of NADF and base oil at a rate of 800, 8,000 and 16,000 mg kg−1. Initially, reduction in dehydrogenase activity was observed, but it increased with the incubation time. On the 60th day of incubation dehydrogenase activity in untreated control was 1.04 mg TPF g−1 h−1 whereas in the soil samples treated with NADF and the base oil (16,000 mg kg−1), the activity was 1.53 mg TPF h−1 and 1.90 mg TPF h−1, respectively, which was 72 and 82% more than in untreated control. Base oil-treated soil showed more dehydrogenase activity than that observed with NADF. Both NADF and base oil stimulated the soil dehydrogenase activity.  相似文献

The reaction 3 Na-montmorillonite + 2 albite 3 paragonite + 8 quartz has been studied experimentally using starting materials composed of natural low albite, kaolinite and quartz. Rate studies at 2, 4 and 7 kb demonstrate that the reaction takes place at 335–315° C from lower to higher pressures. Attempts to reverse this reaction with runs lasting several months were without success. Comparison with pertinent data from natural mineral assemblages indicate that despite non-reversal, the data presented here may be very near to the true lower thermal compatibility limit of the assemblage quartz-paragonite.The above reaction becomes metastable beyond the upper pressure stability limit of the phase Na-montmorillonite; it is replaced here by another reaction 1 albite + 1 kaolinite 1 paragonite + 2 quartz + 1 H2O, as suggested originally by Zen (1960). A P-T-grid showing possible compatibility relations of the assemblage quartz-paragonite is provided (Fig. 4). Perusal of natural assemblages belonging to the subsystem Na2O-Al2O3-SiO2-H2O lends credence to this grid.In course of the rate studies reported here, various regular paragonite-sodium montmorillonite mixed-layer phases were encountered (Fig. 2); the 11 regular mixed-layer phase represents the synthetic analogue of the mineral rectorite (sometimes called allevardite), widely recorded from deep diagenetic and anchimetamorphic environments. Results of rate-studies (Fig. 3) suggest that the mixed-layer phases are all transient, metastable products obtained during the transformation of the albite-Na-montmorillonite assemblage to paragonite-quartz. As such, rectorite and related mixed-layer phases on the join montmorillonite-paragonite, are always less stable relative to the assemblage Na-montmorillonite-paragonite.  相似文献

Development of design flood hydrographs using probability density functions   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Probability density functions (PDFs) are used to fit the shape of hydrographs and have been popularly used for the development of synthetic unit hydrographs by many hydrologists. Nevertheless, modelling the shapes of continuous stream flow hydrographs, which are probabilistic in nature, is rare. In the present study, a novel approach was followed to model the shape of stream flow hydrographs using PDF and subsequently to develop design flood hydrographs for various return periods. Four continuous PDFs, namely, two parameter Beta, Weibull, Gamma and Lognormal, were employed to fit the shape of the hydrographs of 22 years at a site of Brahmani River in eastern India. The shapes of the observed and PDF fitted hydrographs were compared and root mean square errors, error of peak discharge (EQP) and error of time to peak (ETP) were computed. The best‐fitted shape and scale parameters of all PDFs were subjected to frequency analysis and the quartiles corresponding to 20‐, 50‐, 100‐ and 200‐year were estimated. The estimated parameters of each return period were used to develop the flood hydrographs for 20‐, 50‐, 100‐ and 200‐year return periods. The peak discharges of the developed design flood hydrographs were compared with the design discharges estimated from the frequency analysis of 22 years of annual peak discharges at that site. Lognormal‐produced peak discharge was very close to the estimated design discharge in case of 20‐year flood hydrograph. On the other hand, peak discharge obtained using the Weibull PDF had close agreement with the estimated design discharge obtained from frequency analysis in case of 50‐, 100‐ and 200‐year return periods. The ranking of the PDFs based on estimation of peak of design flood hydrograph for 50‐, 100‐ and 200‐year return periods was found to have the following order: Weibull > Beta > Lognormal > Gamma. Zoned Apatite crystals with intrinsic radioactivity are widespread in the S-type basement granite around Govardhanagiri-Chinnakolumulapalli-L.Banda areas of Kurnool District, A.P. The granite is overlain by Gulcheru quartzite and in turn by Vempalle dolostone of Papaghni Group belonging to the Cuddapah Supergroup. The area (4 km x 6 km) is characterized by conjugate fracture system comprising ENE-WSW and WNW-ESE of varying extents, of which, ENE-WSW is sympathetic to the major deep seated Gani Kalva fault. The apatite crystals are frequently zoned and vary in size from few microns to 1000 microns, occur mostly as veins or associated with pulverized matrix of granite cataclasite. Veins (upto 2 cm. thick) generally follow the major fracture-trend (ENE-WSW) in the area. The apatites are also found intimately associated with fluorite, tourmaline and sulphides, which suggest their derivation from pneumatolytic fluids. The intrinsic accessory uranium as scarce grains of uraninite and other labile phases of granite were remobilized consequent upon the deformation and locked up as ferroan-oxy/hydroxyl inclusions in slowly growing apatite crystals under very low temperature conditions.  相似文献
