Isolates of the dinoflagellate Gonyaulax tamarensis were established from benthic cysts or motile cells collected along the north-western Atlantic coast from the Bay of Fundy to Long Island. All clones were grown under the same conditions and assayed in a blind test for toxin content and composition. Differences in toxin content (μmouse unit per cell) spanning two orders of magnitude were found, with decreasing toxicity from north to south. Some isolates had undetectable toxin levels. The low toxicity of southern strains of G. tamarensis may explain the historical absence of paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) in areas where cysts and motile cells have been reported. The cause of the observed geographic pattern is unknown, but is does suggest that there may be an environmentally-determined southern limit to the regional PSP problem.Qualitative data on the toxin composition of some clones indicate that saxitoxin, neosaxitoxin and gonyautoxins -II, -III and -IV are generally present. A more quantitative approach (i.e. one which examines each isolate for all of the 12 Gonyaulax toxins) is needed to fully utilize the potential of toxin composition in discriminating between strains.  相似文献

Because the solar wind (SW) flow is usually super-sonic, a fast-mode bow shock (BS) is formed in front of the Earth's magnetosphere, and the Moon crosses the BS at both dusk and dawn flanks. On the other hand, behind of the Moon along the SW flow forms a tenuous region called lunar wake, where the flow can be sub-Alfvénic (and thus sub-sonic) because of its low-density status. Here we report, with joint measurement by Chang’E-1 and SELENE, that the Earth's BS surface is drastically deformed in the lunar wake. Despite the quasi-perpendicular shock configuration encountered at dusk flank under the Parker-spiral magnetic field, no clear shock surface can be found in the lunar wake, while instead gradual transition of the magnetic field from the upstream to downstream value was observed for a several-minute interval. This finding suggests that the ‘magnetic ramp’ is highly broadened in the wake where a fast-mode shock is no longer maintained due to the highly reduced density. On the other hand, observations at the 100 km altitude on the dayside show that the fast-mode shock is maintained even when the width of the downstream region is smaller than a typical scale length of a perpendicular shock. Our results suggest that the Moon is not so large to eliminate the BS at 100 km altitude on the dayside, while the magnetic field associated with the shock structure is drastically affected in the lunar wake.  相似文献

We used the flux-calibrated images from the Broad-band Filter Imager and Stokes Polarimeter data obtained with the Solar Optical Telescope onboard the Hinode spacecraft to study the properties of bright points in and around sunspots. The selected bright points are smaller in diameter than 150 km with contrasts exceeding about 3 % in the ratio of sunspot images obtained with the G-band (430.5 nm) and Ca ii H (396.85 nm) filters. The bright points are classified as umbral dot, peripheral umbral dot, penumbral grains, and G-band bright point depending on their location. The bright points are preferentially located around the penumbral boundary and in the fast decaying parts of the umbra. The color temperature of the bright points is in the range of 4600 K to 6600 K with cooler ones located in the central part of the umbra. The temperature increases as a function of distance from the center outward. The G-band, CN-band (388.35 nm), and Ca ii H fluxes of the bright points as a function of their blue-band (450.55 nm) brightness increase continuously in a nonlinear fashion unlike their red (668.4 nm) and green (555.05 nm) counterparts. This is consistent with a model in which the localized heating of the flux tube depletes the molecular concentration, resulting in the reduced opacity that leads to the exposition of deeper and hotter layers. The light curve of the bright points shows that the enhanced brightness at these locations lasts for about 15 to 60 min with the least contrast for the points outside the sunspot. The umbral dots near the penumbral boundary are associated with elongated filamentary structures. The spectropolarimeter observations show that the filling factor decreases as the G-band brightness increases. We discuss the results using the model in which the G-band bright points are produced in the cluster of flux tubes that a sunspot consists of.  相似文献

With the prospect of studying the relevance of the topographic core-mantle coupling to the variations of the Earth’s rotation and also its applicability to constraining the core surface flow, we investigate the variability of the topographic torque estimated by using core surface flow models accompanied by (a) uncertainty due to the non-uniqueness problem in the flow inversion, and (b) variance originating in that of geomagnetic secular variation models employed in the inversion. Various flow models and their variances are estimated by inverting prescribed geomagnetic models at the epoch 1980. The subsequent topographic torque is then calculated by using a core-mantle boundary topography model obtained by seismic tomography. The calculated axial and equatorial torques are found subject to the variability of order 1019 and 1020  Nm, respectively, on which (b) is more effective than (a). The variability of the torque is attributed even to (a) and (b) of the large-scale flows (degrees 2 and 3). Yet, it still seems unlikely for the decadal polar motion with the observed amplitude to be excited exclusively by the equatorial topographic torque associated with any of reasonable core surface flow models. It is also confirmed that, with the topography model adopted here, the axial topographic torque on a rigid annulus in the core (coaxial with the Earth’s rotation axis) associated with any of reasonable flow models is larger by two orders of magnitude than the plausible inertial torque on such cylinders. This implies that any core surface flow model consistent with the topographic coupling does not exist, unless the topography model is appropriately modified. Nevertheless, the topographic coupling might provide not only a weak constraint for explaining the decadal LOD variations, but also the possibility to probe the core surface flow and the core dynamics.  相似文献

The theoretical correction of CO2 fluxes for high frequency attenuation in closed-path systems was re-summarized and its applicability examined using both measurements obtained at an Asiaflux forest site and empirical transfer functions used in previous studies. For our measurement system, the theoretical transfer function was applicable to high frequency correction, even when condensation occurred in the sampling line. Further, in respect to some measurement systems described in previous studies, it was found that the theoretical function was potentially applicable along with the empirical functions used. Meanwhile, in some systems significant errors could not be resolved by re-estimation of the theories. In these systems, because of undefined buffering effects, the actual response lag time decided by the maximum covariance method or by measurement of the system response time using tracer gas was significantly different from the lag time calculated from the tube dimensions and the measured flow rate. If the average flow rate calculated by the actual lag time was used to determine the theoretical function, the theoretical function became closer to, and sometimes agreed with, the empirical function. Any remaining deviation from each function might be associated with pressure fluctuations, but this problem was unable to be examined here. The results suggested that an empirical formulation for each site is considered applicable rather than a theoretical approach, although the theories are being developed to practical application.  相似文献

Melt inclusions from four individual lava samples representing the HIMU (Mangaia Island), EMI (Pitcairn Island) and EMII (Tahaa Island) end member components, have heterogeneous Pb isotopic composition larger than that defined by the erupted lavas in each island. The broad linear trend in 207Pb/206Pb–208Pb/206Pb space produced by the melt inclusions from Mangaia, Tahaa and fPitcairn samples reproduces the entire trend defined by the Austral chain, the Society islands and the Pitcairn island and seamount groups. The inclusions preserve a record of melt composition of far greater isotopic diversity than that sampled in whole rock basalts. These results can be explained by mixing of a common depleted component with the HIMU, EMI and EMII lavas, respectively. We favor a model that considers the oceanic lithosphere to be that common component. We suggest that the Pb isotopic compositions of the melt inclusions reflect wall rock reaction of HIMU, EMI and EMII melts during their percolation through the oceanic lithosphere. Under these conditions, the localized rapid crystallization of olivine from primitive basalt near the reaction zone would allow the entrapment of melt inclusions with different isotopic composition.  相似文献

Volume diffusion rates for five rare earth elements (La, Ce, Nd, Dy, and Yb) have been measured in single crystals of natural diopside at pressures of 0.1 MPa to 2.5 GPa and temperatures of 1,050 to1,450 °C. Polished, pre-annealed crystals were coated with a thin film of rare earth element oxides, then held at constant temperature and pressure for times ranging from 20 to 882 h. Diffusion profiles in quenched samples were measured by SIMS (secondary ion mass spectrometry) depth profiling. At 1 atm pressure, with the oxygen fugacity controlled near the quartz-fayalite-magnetite buffer, the following Arrhenius relations were obtained for diffusion normal to (001) (diffusion coefficient D in m2/s): log10DYb=(-4.64ǂ.42)-(411ᆠ kJ/mol/2.303RT); log10DDy=(-3.31ǃ.44)-(461ᆽ kJ/mol/2.303RT); log10DNd=(-2.95DŽ.64)-(496ᇡ kJ/mol/2.303RT); log10DCe=(-4.10ǃ.08)-(463ᆳ kJ/mol/2.303RT); log10DLu=(-4.22DŽ.66)-(466ᇢ kJ/mol/2.303RT). Diffusion rates decrease significantly with increasing ionic radius, with La a factor of ~35 slower than Yb. The relationship between diffusivity and ionic radius is consistent with a model in which elastic strain plays a critical role in governing the motion of an ion through the crystal lattice. Activation volumes for Yb and Ce diffusion, at constant temperature and oxygen fugacity, are 9.0DŽ.0 cm3/mol and 8.9Dž.2 cm3/mol, respectively, corresponding to an order of magnitude decrease in diffusivity as pressure is increased from 0 to 3 GPa at 1,200 °C. Diffusion of Nd is such that grain-scale isotopic equilibrium in the mantle can be achieved in ~1 My under conditions near the peridotite solidus (~1,450 °C at 2.5 GPa). The equilibration time is much longer under P, T conditions of the lithospheric mantle or at the eclogite solidus (~1 Gy at 1.5 GPa and 1,150 °C). Because of the relatively strong decrease in diffusivity with pressure (two orders of magnitude between 2.5 and 15 GPa along an adiabatic temperature gradient), Nd transport in clinopyroxene will be effectively frozen at pressures approaching the transition zone, on time scales less than 100 My. Rare earth element diffusion rates are slow enough that significant disequilibrium uptake of REE by growing clinopyroxene phenocrysts may be preserved under natural conditions of basalt crystallization. The relative abundances and spatial distributions of REE in such crystals may provide a sensitive record of the cooling and crystallization history of the host lava.  相似文献

This paper presents new experimental data on the tracer diffusion rates of U and Th in diopside at 1 atm and 1150–1300°C. Diffusion couples were prepared by depositing a thin layer of U–Th oxide onto the polished surface of a natural diopside single crystal, and diffusion profiles were measured by ion microprobe depth profiling. For diffusion parallel to [001] the following Arrhenius relations were obtained: log10DU=(−5.75±0.98)−(418±28 kJ/mol)/2.303RT log10DTh=(−7.77±0.92)−(356±26 kJ/mol)/2.303RT. The diffusion data are used to assess the extent to which equilibrium is obtained during near fractional melting of a high-Ca pyroxene bearing mantle peridotite. We find that the diffusion rates for both elements are slow and that disequilibrium between solid and melt will occur under certain melting conditions. For near-fractional adiabatic decompression melting at ascent rates >3 cm/yr, high-Ca pyroxene will exhibit disequilibrium effects. High-Ca pyroxene will become zoned in U and Th and the melts extracted will be depleted in these incompatible elements relative to melts produced by equilibrium fractional melting. U and Th diffusivities in high-Ca pyroxene are similar, and diffusive fractionation of these elements will be limited. Numerical solutions to a dynamic melting model with diffusion-controlled chemical equilibration indicate that the activity ratio [230Th/238U] in a partial melt of spinel peridotite will be slightly less than 1 for a broad range of melting parameters. This result reinforces the already widely accepted conclusion that melting of spinel peridotite cannot account for 230Th excesses in mid-ocean ridge and ocean island basalts, and that garnet must therefore be present over part of the melting column.  相似文献

Trace element zoning in garnets from two contact-metamorphosed rocks from the Kwoiek area, British Columbia (Hollister 1969a), was measured with an ion microprobe. Zoning profiles have three distinct parts with chemical breaks defined by co-variation of major and trace elements. Important features of the trace element zoning profiles are: (1) roughly bell-shaped zoning profiles for Y and the HREEs, (2) an abrupt increase in Ti at a point midway through each garnet with inflections in the zoning profiles of other elements (Li, Na, Cr, V, Y, Zr, and the HREE), and (3) irregular Cr and V profiles. Unlike Mn zoning, the zoning profiles of most other trace elements cannot be easily modeled using simple Rayleigh fractionation models. Ti activity in the two samples is buffered by phase relations with ilmenite. Garnets from a continuously heated contact metamorphic environment should display continuous Ti zoning profiles if equilibrium was maintained and provided the Ti buffering assemblage did not change during garnet growth. The irregular Ti profiles suggest disequilibrium behavior. Several elements (Cr, V) may indicate breakdown of a phase enriched in trace elements during metamorphism. The source for the mass excess of these elements is probably the refractory cores of ilmenite grains. Either differing matrix transport rates of trace lements or interface kinetic controlled segregation could explain the unusual trace element behavior at the element inflection point. The preferred explanation involves segregation of elements at the interface of the garnet that were trapped during episodes of rapid garnet growth.  相似文献
