Currently, aquifers are considered to be ecosystems that interchange materials and energy with other systems located in their surroundings. The aquifer system of Doñana (southwest Spain) has been studied over recent decades from a hydrogeological point of view, although nothing is known about its biological or ecological aspects. In order to describe the general characteristics of its microbial communities, bacterial abundance, cell biomass, bacterial biomass and microbial activities of functional groups were investigated by sampling, over a 2-year period, 13 wells located in the vicinity of four very productive shallow lakes in the most superficial part of this coastal, sandy aquifer system. Multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) indicated differences in abundance and biomass variables among sampling locations, seasons and sampling locations × seasons. Principal component analysis showed that temperature and dissolved oxygen appeared to be the most important factors controlling the temporal variability of microbial communities. Hydrological connectivity between surface water and groundwater was important in the control of the spatiotemporal distribution of microbial communities. Due to this hydrological connection, the aquifer system and the wetlands constitute a unique entity, a unique ecosystem, called the “hydroecosystem”, where microbial communities could play a central ecological role.  相似文献

A constrained model predictive control (MPC) strategy is proposed to deal with the problem of optimizing flotation column operation using secondary variables. Froth depth, collection zone gas hold-up and bias rate are selected as secondary variables to be controlled whereas tailing, wash-water and gas flow rate are used as manipulated variables. The control problem was formulated in order to minimize the tracking error of the gas hold-up and bias rate by maintaining gas flow rate, wash-water flow rate and bias rate within their operational limits. In particular, a strategy was conceived to optimize the column flotation process based on establishing an unreachable high set point for the gas hold-up (which is equivalent to maximizing the bubble surface area available for particle collection at a given flotation reagent dosage and thus recovery), while simultaneously satisfying operational constraints (such as ensuring a positive bias rate to prevent gangue entrainment and therefore concentrate grade deterioration). Several other operational constraints on wash-water, gas rate, gas hold-up and bias rate were considered, their use being justified from a processing point of view. Since this study deals with the hydrodynamic characteristics of flotation columns, a pilot flotation column working with a two-phase system is sufficient to demonstrate the advantages of using predictive control for this process optimization.  相似文献

The Andean foreland basin overlaps the Cretaceous-Paleogene Salta rift basin in northwestern Argentina. Knowledge of the relationship between rift and foreland basins is key to understanding the initial stages of foreland basin development related to Andean shortening. We present a new stratigraphic scheme for the Luracatao Valley, revealing that the Quebrada de los Colorados Formation (Payogastilla Group) lies over the Santa Bárbara Subgroup (Salta Group) through an erosional unconformity that turns into an angular unconformity close to folds and faults recorded in the Santa Bárbara Subgroup. The base of the Quebrada de los Colorados Formation shows growth strata along the west frontal limb of an anticline with Santa Bárbara units in its core. The finding of a mammalian fossil at the base of the Quebrada de los Colorados Formation allows us to assign a Middle-Upper Eocene age to the sedimentation; therefore, the time elapsed between the deposition of the final postrift strata and the beginning of Andean sedimentation was brief and constrained to the Lower-Middle Eocene. This data indicates that the Eocene deformation phase described in other portions of the Puna-Cordillera Oriental transition (e.g., the northern Calchaquí Valley and Aguilar range) is also present in the Luracatao Valley, offering new tools for interpreting the ages and distributions of the initial episodes of sedimentation and deformation related to the Andean shortening. Thus, the Luracatao Valley provides new evidence for tracking the distribution of the Paleogene deformation in northwestern Argentina.  相似文献

Non-degenerate stars of essentially all spectral classes are soft X-ray sources. Their X-ray spectra have been important in constraining physical processes that heat plasma in stellar environments to temperatures exceeding one million degrees. Low-mass stars on the cooler part of the main sequence and their pre-main sequence predecessors define the dominant stellar population in the galaxy by number. Their X-ray spectra are reminiscent, in the broadest sense, of X-ray spectra from the solar corona. The Sun itself as a typical example of a main-sequence cool star has been a pivotal testbed for physical models to be applied to cool stars. X-ray emission from cool stars is indeed ascribed to magnetically trapped hot gas analogous to the solar coronal plasma, although plasma parameters such as temperature, density, and element abundances vary widely. Coronal structure, its thermal stratification and geometric extent can also be interpreted based on various spectral diagnostics. New features have been identified in pre-main sequence stars; some of these may be related to accretion shocks on the stellar surface, fluorescence on circumstellar disks due to X-ray irradiation, or shock heating in stellar outflows. Massive, hot stars clearly dominate the interaction with the galactic interstellar medium: they are the main sources of ionizing radiation, mechanical energy and chemical enrichment in galaxies. High-energy emission permits to probe some of the most important processes at work in these stars, and put constraints on their most peculiar feature: the stellar wind. Medium and high- resolution spectroscopy have shed new light on these objects as well. Here, we review recent advances in our understanding of cool and hot stars through the study of X-ray spectra, in particular high-resolution spectra now available from XMM-Newton and Chandra. We address issues related to coronal structure, flares, the composition of coronal plasma, X-ray production in accretion streams and outflows, X-rays from single OB-type stars, massive binaries, magnetic hot objects and evolved WR stars.  相似文献

This paper presents a simulation of three components of near-field ground shaking recorded during the main shock at three stations of the September 16, 1978, Tabas (M w = 7.4), Iran, earthquake, close to the causative fault. A hybrid method composed of a discrete wavenumber method developed by Bouchon (Bouchon in Bull Seismol Soc Am 71:959–971, 1981; Cotton and Coutant in Geophys J Int 128:676–688, 1997) and a stochastic finite-fault modeling based on a dynamic corner frequency proposed by Motazedian and Atkinson (Bull Seismol Soc Am 95:995–1010, 2005), modified by Assatourians and Atkinson (Bull Seismol Soc Am 97:935–1949, 2007), is used for generating the seismograms at low (0.1–1.0 Hz) and high frequencies (1.0–20.0 Hz), respectively. The results are validated by comparing the simulated peak acceleration, peak velocity, peak displacement, Arias intensity, the integral of velocity squared, Fourier spectrum and acceleration response spectrum on a frequency-by-frequency basis, the shape of the normalized integrals of acceleration and velocity squared, and the cross-correlation with the observed time-series data. Each characteristic is compared on a scale from 0 to 10, with 10 being perfect agreement. Also, the results are validated by comparing the simulated ground motions with the modified Mercalli intensity observations reported by reconnaissance teams and showed reasonable agreement. The results of the present study imply that the damage distribution pattern of the 1978 Tabas earthquake can be explained by the source directivity effect.  相似文献

An Eocene foreland basin linked to the Andean uplift in northwestern Argentina has recently been proposed. The basin is divided and partially eroded due to subsequent Neogene orogenic phases, so that a simple reconstruction is insufficient to describe complex field relationships. This presents a new challenge in understanding the initial phases of Central Andean evolution. We propose a multidisciplinary approach in key locations and/or at key geological features as a way to reconstruct the Paleogene basin. In this contribution, we report on sedimentological and geochemical evidence of a conspicuous weathering surface in the continental Eocene Lumbrera Formation and provide an age estimate based on vertebrate mammalian biostratigraphy and an absolute U/Pb zircon age of 39.9 Ma. Weathering surfaces become evident when diagnostic features like paleosols, karsts, and trace fossils are distinctive but, in our case, these characteristics only emerge through detailed sedimentological and geochemical surveys. The Lumbrera paleosurface is represented by a hardened level (20–30 cm thick) characterized by moderately developed reddish paleosols. Moreover, major and trace element profiles show inflections at the top and/or base of the weathered horizon delineating it. A modified form of the chemical index of alteration shows that chemical leaching was moderate and not extensive. In addition, mammalian fossil records substantially differ below and above the weathered paleosol-bearing surface. We conclude that this horizon represents a Middle Eocene omission surface and represents a key level marking a major basin change in northwest Argentina, adding a new constraints for Eocene foreland reconstruction.  相似文献

Inorganic ions and trace metals in total suspended particles were measured during the period 2006–2007 at four sites; three urban sites in the Mexico City Metropolitan Area (MCMA) and one nearby rural site in the state of Morelos. SO42−, NO3, Cl and NH4+ ions were analyzed by ion chromatography; Na+, K+, Ca2+ and Mg2+ by flame atomic absorption spectroscopy, and Al, Cd, Cr, Mn, Pb and V by an atomic absorption spectrometer with a graphite furnace attachment. The results indicated that SO42− was the most abundant ion. All trace elements except Mn and V showed statistically significant differences between sampling sites. Pearson's correlation applied to all data showed a high correlation among SO42−, NO3 and NH4+, indicating a common anthropogenic origin. In addition, the correlation observed between Ca2+ and Al indicated a crustal origin, as supported by the enrichment factors. Over the total sampling period, significant differences in particles and trace metals were found between sites and meteorological seasons. To gain a better insight into the origin of trace metals and major inorganic ions, a Principal Component Analysis was applied to the results for six trace metal and eight inorganic ions.  相似文献

Paleolimnological data are presented on Holocene climatic changes in Lake Blanca, a small (0.6 km2), coastal fresh waterbody in southern Uruguay. Using a sediment core that extended to 7,300 year BP, analyses of pooid, panicoid and chloridoid phytoliths (Poaceae) allowed us to identify 16 Opal Phytoliths Association Zones (OPAZ). Both temperature and humidity indices were calculated from relative percentages of opal phytoliths and the climatic trends were inferred. During the early Holocene, prior to the first Holocene marine transgression (∼ ∼8,000–7,000 yr BP), cool-arid climatic conditions were inferred. After the first Holocene transgression, predominance of cool-humid conditions was registered until about 4,000 yr BP. A transition from cool-semiarid/arid to alternate warm-temperate and humid-very-humid conditions was detected for ∼∼4,000–1,000 yr BP. Increases in trophic state were observed because of such a climatic amelioration. After ∼ ∼1,000 yr BP, a shift from warm to temperate and cool temperatures was inferred. Such a cooling episode was assigned to a “LIA” which took place by the end of the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th century. A decrease in trophic state was observed during this climatic deterioration. After such a little ice age, present temperate humid conditions were established. The humidity indices calculated from relative percentages of opal phytoliths for the last ∼ ∼70 years were compared to annual rainfall data. Such a comparison showed that opal phytoliths are reliable indicators of humidity.  相似文献

The spatial variability of the quality of the soil on the shores of a lagoon affected by hydromorphy and/or salinity can be identified (Laguna de Villacañas, Castilla La Mancha) by the use of multitemporal Landsat images in order to analyse these changes. For this purpose, TM and ETM images along with field observations and certain edaphic laboratory parameters are used. In order to identify saline-hydromorphic soils, the spatial variability of chemical and physical properties of a transect, which includes from Solonchaks to Regosols and Cambisols, have been correlated with the Normalised Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI). This index, chosen for specific dates, has proven to be very useful in detecting halophytic vegetation and relating it to the variability of the quality of these soils.  相似文献

The Camaquã Basin, developed during the last phases of the Brazilian/Pan-African Orogeny and was filled with a thick volcano-sedimentary succesion, in which two volcanic events of alkaline affinity are represented by the Acampamento Velho Alloformation and the Rodeio Velho Member. The Acampamento Velho Alloformation records a bimodal event with a lower association of mafic flows and an upper association of felsic pyroclastic rocks and flows. It was formed during extension, after the subduction of the Adamastor oceanic plate beneath the Rio de La Plata continental plate at the end of the Neoproterozoic III. The second event, the Rodeio Velho Member, represented by mafic flows, intrusions and piroclasts, took place during overall extensional tectonism, probably in the middle Ordovician. Rb, Sr, Sm, and Nd isotopic measurements were carried out on samples from both units. Regardless the event they represent, all the samples display negative values for epsilon Nd, ranging from 2.97 to 10.31 for the Acampamento Velho Alloformation and from 8.39 to 13.92 for the Rodeio Velho Member. The initial 87Sr/86Sr ratios vary from 0.706 to 0.707 and from 0.704 to 0.707 for the Acampamento Velho Alloformation and Rodeio Velho Member, respectively. Mafic flow deposits in both units show a preferential enrichment in Ba relative to Th. Flow samples from the Rodeio Velho Member also display a distinctive enrichment in the Ba/Th ratio, without a change in the initial Sr, compared to the mafic flow deposits from the Acampamento Velho Alloformation, which show a slight enrichment in those ratios. As for the Acampamento Velho Alloformation, the mafic lavas could be a mixture of depleted mantle-derived basalts plus 20% to 30% of crustal contamination by sediment (probably Neoproterozoic arkosic quartzites). The formation of a magmatic chamber and the separation of the magma into two fractions gave rise initially to the mafic rocks at the base of the Acampamento Velho Alloformation The other magma fraction underwent a significant enrichment in crustal component before the felsic rocks of this Alloformation were formed. The flows from the Rodeio Velho Member originated in a distinct magma chamber, with EM I characteristics that was much more enriched in incompatible elements and depleted in radiogenic Sr.  相似文献
