A survey was carried out to investigate the relationship of phytoplankton biovolume, structure, and species life strategies with major abiotic factors in a subtropical choked coastal lagoon (34°33′S, 54°22′W) naturally connecting with the Atlantic Ocean several times a year. Marine and limnetic influence areas were sampled on a monthly basis during two periods, one of low rainfall and high conductivity (August 1996 to February 1998) and a second period with the opposite tendency (December 1998 to March 2000). Photosynthetically active radiation availability was high and reached the bottom (>1% of the incident light), while dissolved inorganic nitrogen (0.6–18.4 μM), soluble reactive phosphorus (<0.3–2.7 μM), and reactive silica (5–386 μM) were highly variable. Life strategies were identified in the phytoplankton as a function of morphology. C-strategists, invasive planktonic and epipelic species of small size, and R-strategists, mixing-dependent species of medium size, characterized this permanently mixed system. High frequency of exchange with the ocean prevented high biomass accumulation. Phytoplankton biomass was lower in the second period of high rainfall (2.3 and 1.1 mm3 1−1 for period 1 and 2 respectively). A canonical correspondence analysis showed that conductivity, nitrogen, phosphorus, and silica were the main environmental variables explaining phytoplankton species composition patterns. During the first period, Bacillariophyceae (mostly pennate species) and the potentially toxicPrococentrum minimum were dominant; during the second period a higher contribution of flagellates (Cryptophyceae, Euglenophyceae, Prasinophyceae, and flagellates <7 μm) was found. Differences of phytoplankton biomass, main taxonomic groups, and strategies were found between periods but not between limnic and marine areas, suggesting that hydrological dynamic is more relevant than seasonal and spatial differences.  相似文献

Paleolimnological data are presented on trophic development, climatic change and sea level variations in Rocha Lagoon, a 72 km2 coastal lagoon in southern Uruguay. Using a sediment core that extended from 7000 to about 3700 yr BP, analyses of organic matter, carbonate, diatoms and chrysophyte cysts were used to track the early Holocene paleolimnological conditions of Rocha Lagoon. Opal phytoliths were also counted and identified, both temperature and humidity indices were calculated, and Opal Phytolith Association Zones (OPAZ) were identified by performing Principal Coordinates Analysis (PCO). Diatom Association Zones (DAZ) corresponding to marine/brackish and brackish/freshwater episodes were closely related to changes in trophic state. Those DAZ representing marine/brackish stages exhibited a lower trophic state than those DAZ dominated by brackish and freshwater diatoms. This highlights that during the first Holocene marine transgression, Rocha Lagoon did not continuously exhibit marine/brackish conditions as reported in previous papers. Instead, three brackish/freshwater episodes related to sea level variation and changes in humidity were identified. The first episode, by ~6000 yr BP, was related to sea level change as no significant changes in either temperature or humidity indices were observed. The second episode, between 5000 and 4400 yr BP, was related to both a sea level decrease and an increase in humidity, as a transition from humid to very humid climate was inferred. Concomitant decreases in salinity and increases in trophic state were also observed. The third episode, after ~4000 yr BP, was related to the end of the first Holocene regressive phase when sea level was slightly below present levels. Further decreases in salinity and increases in trophic state were detected. The paleoclimatic trends inferred in this study were in close agreement with other regional studies on climatic change, as cool temperatures were inferred. However, major changes in humidity were also detected. A humid to very humid climate was inferred for ~7000–4500 yr BP, but the occurrence of a semiarid/arid climate was inferred for ~4500–3700 yr BP. Our data suggest that during transgressive and regressive events there might be higher frequency and lower amplitude sea level oscillations that might lead to changes in salinity and trophic state of coastal aquatic systems. Such oscillations could only be tracked by high resolution analyses of sedimentary records and could be best interpreted with complementary data on paleoclimate. In addition, microfossils such as diatoms and opal phytoliths were shown to be very sensitive to such paleoenvironmental changes.  相似文献

The variation in the activity patterns of the Chichinautzin volcanic rocks is discussed. This sequence of lavas and pyroclastic deposits is located in the central part of the Mexican Volcanic Belt, directly south of Mexico City, and is typical of its Quaternary monogenetic vulcanism. One-hundred and fourty-six volcanoes and their deposits covering 952 km2 were mapped. Cone density is 0.15 km2 with heights ranging from to 315 m and crater diameters from 50 to 750 m. Ratios of cone height/diameter decreased from 0.20 to 0.12 with age. Basal diameters varied from 0.1 km to 2 km. Lavas are mainly blocky andesites but some dacites and basalts were found. Lengths of flows range from 1.0 to 21.5 km with heights of 0.5 to 300 m and aspect rations of 21.4 to 350. Three types of volcanic structures are found in the area: scoria cones, lavas cones and thick flows lacking a cone. Pyroclastic deposits are basically Strombolian although some deposits were produced by more violent activity and lava cones seem to have formed by activity transitional to Hawaiian-type vulcanism. Therre is a dominant E-W trend shown mainly by the orientation of cone clusters. The Chichinautzin volcanic centers are compared to the monogenetic volcanoes of the Toluca and Paricutin areas which are similar.  相似文献

Public health professionals are increasingly concerned about the potential impact that climate variability and change can have on infectious disease. The International Research Institute for Climate and Society (IRI) is developing new products to increase the public health community’s capacity to understand, use and demand the appropriate climate data and climate information to mitigate the public health impacts of climate on infectious disease, in particular meningitis and malaria. In this paper, we present the new and improved products that have been developed for: (i) estimating dust aerosol for forecasting risks of meningitis and (ii) for monitoring temperature and rainfall and integrating them into a vectorial capacity model for forecasting risks of malaria epidemics. We also present how the products have been integrated into a knowledge system (IRI Data Library Map Room, SERVIR) to support the use of climate and environmental information in climate-sensitive health decision-making.  相似文献

The ability of baked clay-elaborated objects to record the temporal variations of both direction and intensity of the geomagnetic field at the time of their elaboration or last use has been widely used during the last decades to fill the gaps left by available time-discrete volcanic-rock logs for a better knowledge of the evolution of the geomagnetic field. Further refinement of the secular variation curves has motivated the search for alternative non-conventional materials as attractive targets for archeomagnetic studies. Both clay and copper have been used since pre-Hispanic times for the elaboration of a wide variety of ornamental and utilitarian objects in Mesoamerica. Previous studies carried out in Europe and Israel have shown the usefulness of copper slags as one of these non-conventional materials. We present the results of an integrated study carried out on ten copper slags from seven ancient metallurgical sites of Michoacán. The analysis included a series of rock magnetism experiments, scanning electron microscope analysis, archeointensity determinations following the Thellier-Coe method and their corresponding dating. Based on the results obtained the slag-set analyzed can be divided in two main groups: low Fe concentrations (associated with high Cu concentrations) for slags comprising the first group, and high Fe concentrations (associated with low Cu concentrations) for slags from second group. Slags from the first group are characterized by almost reversible thermomagnetic curves, while those corresponding to the second group show a quite irreversible behavior. A crystalline (vitreous) structure within the massive surface of the slags is observed for those coming from the second (first) group. These striking features could reflect significant differences in the metallurgical process followed at these sites, which according to archeological and historical evidences correspond to Colonial and pre-Hispanic usage metallurgical sites; first and second group, respectively. The good experimental behavior exhibited by these materials demonstrates the suitability of copper slag to obtaining absolute archeointensity data which can be used to improve the existing Mesoamerican archeomagnetic record. This in turn, can be used both for geomagnetic field modelling purposes and archeomagnetic dating.  相似文献

The most recent developments in inversion techniques of the radiative transfer equation are critically reviewed and some of their findings are summarized to illustrating their achievements. Two significantly different approaches are currently being used that deserve consideration, each characterized by whether or not the model solar atmospheres are changed iteratively by the algorithm. The comparison between the two may help in finding future inversion techniques that can solve many challenging problems of solar physics that still need to be properly settled. These problems themselves suggest strategies that look more suitable than others.  相似文献

We review the origin and evolution of the atmospheres of Earth, Venus and Mars from the time when their accreting bodies were released from the protoplanetary disk a few million years after the origin of the Sun. If the accreting planetary cores reached masses \(\ge 0.5 M_\mathrm{Earth}\) before the gas in the disk disappeared, primordial atmospheres consisting mainly of H\(_2\) form around the young planetary body, contrary to late-stage planet formation, where terrestrial planets accrete material after the nebula phase of the disk. The differences between these two scenarios are explored by investigating non-radiogenic atmospheric noble gas isotope anomalies observed on the three terrestrial planets. The role of the young Sun’s more efficient EUV radiation and of the plasma environment into the escape of early atmospheres is also addressed. We discuss the catastrophic outgassing of volatiles and the formation and cooling of steam atmospheres after the solidification of magma oceans and we describe the geochemical evidence for additional delivery of volatile-rich chondritic materials during the main stages of terrestrial planet formation. The evolution scenario of early Earth is then compared with the atmospheric evolution of planets where no active plate tectonics emerged like on Venus and Mars. We look at the diversity between early Earth, Venus and Mars, which is found to be related to their differing geochemical, geodynamical and geophysical conditions, including plate tectonics, crust and mantle oxidation processes and their involvement in degassing processes of secondary \(\hbox {N}_2\) atmospheres. The buildup of atmospheric \(\hbox {N}_2\), \(\hbox {O}_2\), and the role of greenhouse gases such as \(\hbox {CO}_2\) and \(\hbox {CH}_4\) to counter the Faint Young Sun Paradox (FYSP), when the earliest life forms on Earth originated until the Great Oxidation Event \(\approx \) 2.3 Gyr ago, are addressed. This review concludes with a discussion on the implications of understanding Earth’s geophysical and related atmospheric evolution in relation to the discovery of potential habitable terrestrial exoplanets.  相似文献

Nordaustlandet is located in the northeastern part of the Svalbard archipelago, within the northernmost reach of the West Spitsbergen Current. This current transports Atlantic water to the Arctic Ocean along the western and northern Svalbard margins. This region is well-suited for reconstructing the history of changing Atlantic water inflow to the Arctic Ocean. We studied the marine sediment core HH12-04-GC from Rijpfjorden. Benthic foraminiferal assemblages and sedimentological data are combined to reconstruct the palaeoenvironment of the fjord from the end of the last local deglaciation to the late Holocene. The local deglaciation, between 11.3 and 10.6 cal ka bp , was dominated by active glacier calving processes, associated with a strong inflow of Atlantic water. This led to the establishment of glaciomarine conditions. The Holocene was initially characterised by a relatively stable and warm environment associated with a strong contribution of Atlantic water. Glaciomarine influence progressively decreases after 9.7 cal ka bp and the Atlantic water contribution increases. The late Holocene displayed a similar environment to today, with the influence of glaciomarine conditions and limited Atlantic water inflow. These results confirm that Atlantic water inflows made a continuous contribution to northern Nordaustlandet throughout the postglacial period.  相似文献
