Pristine tropical forests play a critical role in regional and global climate systems. For a better understanding of the eco-hydrology of tropical “evergreen” vegetation, it is essential to know the partitioning of water into transpiration and evaporation, runoff and associated water ages. For this purpose, we evaluated how topography and vegetation influence water flux and age dynamics at high temporal (hourly) and spatial (10 m) resolution using the Spatially Distributed Tracer-Aided Rainfall-Runoff model for the tropics (STARRtropics). The model was applied in a tropical rainforest catchment (3.2 km2) where data were collected biweekly to monthly and during intensive monitoring campaigns from January 2013 to July 2018. The STARRtropics model was further developed, incorporating an isotope mass balance for evapotranspiration partitioning into transpiration and evaporation. Results exhibited a rapid streamflow response to rainfall inputs (water and isotopes) with limited mixing and a largely time-invariant baseflow isotope composition. Simulated soil water storage showed a transient response to rainfall inputs with a seasonal component directly resembling the streamflow dynamics which was independently evaluated using soil water content measurements. High transpiration fluxes (max 7 mm/day) were linked to lower slope gradients, deeper soils and greater leaf area index. Overall water partitioning resulted in 65% of the actual evapotranspiration being driven by vegetation with high transpiration rates over the drier months compared to the wet season. Time scales of water age were highly variable, ranging from hours to a few years. Stream water ages were conceptualized as a mixture of younger soil water and slightly older, deeper soil water and shallow groundwater with a maximum age of roughly 2 years during drought conditions (722 days). The simulated soil water ages ranged from hours to 162 days and for shallow groundwater up to 1,200 days. Despite the model assumptions, experimental challenges and data limitation, this preliminary spatially distributed model study enhances knowledge about the water ages and overall young water dominance in a tropical rainforest with little influence of deeper and older groundwater. 相似文献

The impacts of forest conversion on runoff generation in the tropics have received much interest, but scientific progress is still hampered by challenging fieldwork conditions and limited knowledge about runoff mechanisms. Here, we assessed the runoff generation, flow paths and water source dynamics of a pristine rainforest catchment in Costa Rica using end member mixing analysis (EMMA) and a Bayesian mixing model (MixSIAR). Geochemical tracer data collected over a 4-week field campaign were combined with tritium data used to assess potential deeper groundwater flow pathways to the perennial stream. The streamflow composition was best captured using three end-members, namely throughfall, shallow (5–15 cm) and deeper (15–50 cm) soil water. We estimated the end-member contributions to the main stream and two tributaries using the two mixing approaches and found good agreement between results obtained from EMMA and MixSIAR. The system was overwhelmingly dominated by near-surface sources, with little evidence for deeper and older groundwater as tritium-derived baseflow mean transit time was between 2.0 and 4.4 years. The shallow soil flow pathway dominated streamflow contributions in the main stream (median 39% and 49% based on EMMA and MixSIAR, respectively), followed by the deeper soil (32% and 31%) and throughfall (25% and 19%). The two tributaries had even greater shallow soil water contributions relative to the main stream (83% and 74% for tributary A and 42% and 63% for tributary B). Tributary B had no detectable deep soil water contribution, reflecting the morphology of the hillslope (steeper slopes, shallower soils and lower vegetation density compared to hillslope A). Despite the short sampling campaign and associated uncertainties, this study allowed to thoroughly assess runoff generation mechanisms in a humid tropical catchment. Our results also provide a first comparison of two increasingly used mixing models and suggest that EMMA and MixSIAR yield comparable estimates of water source partitioning in this tropical, volcanic rainforest environment. 相似文献

Desalination plants generate notable (>1,000 s m3) quantities of hypersaline brine which potentially affect the biological communities in the receiving area. We assessed whether proximity to a brine discharge point located off Gran Canaria (Canary Islands, eastern Atlantic) altered patterns in the abundance and assemblage structure of subtidal, soft-bottom, meiofauna. Samples were collected twice (May 2008 and January 2009) at 0, 15 and 30 m away from the brine discharge point, corresponding to a change in salinity from 45 to 36. Proximity to the brine discharge point affected overall meiofaunal abundances: lowest abundances were observed at 0 m (64.55 ± 39.86 ind 10 cm−2, mean ± SD) than at 15 (210.49 ± 121.01 ind 10 cm−2) and 30 m (361.88 ± 102.64 ind 10 cm−2) away from the brine discharge point. This pattern was particularly notable for the most conspicuous meiofaunal groups: nematodes and copepods, and meiofaunal assemblage structure also differed with varying proximity to the brine discharge point. Although multivariate techniques identified changes in salinity as a relevant driver of patterns in meiofaunal assemblage structure with varying proximity to the brine outfall, a shift in particle size composition between May 2008 and January 2009 also contributed to explain differences in meiofaunal abundances and assemblage structure with varying proximity to the brine discharge point. Hence, meiofauna can be considered a suitable tool to monitor environmental impacts derived from the discharge of hypersaline effluents on subtidal, soft-bottom, assemblages if potential confounding drivers, i.e. here temporal changes in particle size composition, are accounted for to avoid possible confusing interpretations. 相似文献

Groundwater management needs detailed aquifer characterization, especially in semiarid costal aquifer systems that are under
hydrological pressure. Our study area is in the Tordera delta, northeastern coast of Spain, where a detrital fluvio-deltaic
aquifer system has been developed above granitic basement. The main purpose of this study is to characterize the complex lithological
structure and the seawater intrusion state by combining hydrological information, audiomagnetotelluric (AMT) and seismic reflection
and refraction models. This allowed us to provide spatially continuous information about aquifer properties and processes.
Thus, we have determined the thickness and continuity of the aquifer units, as well as the morphology and depth to the basement.
The models revealed that the main seawater intrusion main path is found in the western deltaic area that coincides with an
existing buried paleochannel. This new result explains the anomalously high chlorine concentrations observed in the deep semiconfined

A sedimentological, biostratigraphical and geochemical (stable isotopes and Rock‐Eval parameters) analysis was performed on four Swiss successions, in order to examine the expression of the Toarcian Oceanic Anoxic Event along a north–south transect, from the Jura through the Alpine Tethys (Sub‐Briançonnais and Lombardian basins). The locations were selected to represent a range of palaeoceanographic positions from an epicontinental sea to a more open marine setting. The Toarcian Oceanic Anoxic Event was recognized by the presence of the characteristic negative carbon‐isotope excursion in carbonate (ca 2 to 4‰) and organic matter (ca 4 to 5‰) at the base of the falciferum ammonite Zone (NJT6 nannofossil Zone). The sedimentary expression of the Toarcian Oceanic Anoxic Event varies along the transect from laminated mudstone rich in total organic carbon (≤11 wt.%) in the Jura, to thin‐bedded marl (≤5 wt.% total organic carbon) in the Sub‐Briançonnais Basin and to hemipelagic reddish marly limestone (total organic carbon <0·05 wt.%) in equivalent levels from the Lombardian Basin. The carbon‐isotope excursion is thus independent of facies and palaeoceanographic position. The low nannofossil abundance and the peak in Calyculaceae in the Jura and the Sub‐Briançonnais Basin indicate low salinity surface waters and stratified water masses in general. Sedimentological observations (for example, obliquely‐bedded laminae and homogeneous mud layers containing rip‐up clasts) indicate the presence of dynamic conditions, suggesting that water mass stratification was episodically disrupted during the Toarcian Oceanic Anoxic Event. The proposed correlation highlights a stratigraphic gap and/or condensed interval between the Pliensbachian–Toarcian boundary and the Toarcian Oceanic Anoxic Event interval (most of the tenuicostatum ammonite Zone is missing), which is also observed in coeval European sections and points to the influence of sea‐level change and current dynamics. This transect shows that the sedimentary expression of the Toarcian Oceanic Anoxic Event is not uniform across the Alpine Tethys, supporting the importance of local conditions in determining how this event is recorded across different palaeoceanographic settings. 相似文献

A previous contribution from our laboratory reported the formation of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) upon addition of pyrite (FeS2) to O2-free water. It was hypothesized that a reaction between adsorbed H2O and Fe(III), at a sulfur-deficient defect site, on the pyrite surface generates an adsorbed hydroxyl radical (OH•).

A thin film of marcasite, FeS2, was synthesized under vacuum and its structure and reactivity under oxidizing conditions was investigated by means of diffraction and surface analytical techniques, respectively. Synthesis of the film was carried out by codepositing Fe and S2 onto a Ta support. The thickness of the film could be varied from approximately 10 Å to 1 μm. High-resolution S 2p synchrotron-based photoemission showed S22−, with undetectable amounts of S2− impurity that is typically present on natural sample surfaces. X-ray diffraction of the micron-thick films showed that the film crystallized in the marcasite phase of FeS2. Atomic force microscopy indicated that the thin film had a nanometer-scale roughness suggesting the film contained defects such as steps and kinks. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy studies found the thin marcasite film to be more reactive than natural pyrite (the most ubiquitous FeS2 dimorph) after exposure to a gaseous O2/H2O environment on the basis of the amount of sulfate formation. Likely the oxidation of marcasite was dominated by its short-range order (e.g., presence of steps), because the density of nonstoichiometric defect sites (e.g., S2−) was low as assessed by photoelectron spectroscopy. 相似文献

Six C2M chondrites (Boriskino, Cold Bokkeveld, Erakot, Essebi, Haripura and Santa Cruz) and the C2R chondrite Al Rais were analyzed by radiochemical neutron activation analysis for Ag, Au, Bi, Cd, Cs, Ge, In, Ir, Ni, Os, Pd, Rb, Re, Sb, Se, Sn, Te, Tl, U, and Zn. Abundances (relative to Cl chondrites) show a systematic dependence on volatility, apparently reflecting volatile loss during formation of chondrules and other high-T components. Elements of nebular condensation temperature (Tc) > 1200 K are undepleted, those of Tc < 700 K are depleted by a constant factor (0.482 ± 0.049 for C2M's) and elements of intermediate volatility are depleted by intermediate factors. The abundances do not “tend to fall monotonically as a function of [Tc],” as previously claimed by Wai and Wasson (1977) for a more restricted temperature range. For meteorites that have suffered little aqueous alteration (Mighei, Murchison, Murray), the mean abundance of volatiles agrees with the matrix content, but for the more altered meteorites, matrix contents are 20–30% higher. Only a few meteorites deviate appreciably from the mean abundance pattern. Al Rais, a C2R chondrite with a significant metal content, is systematically lower in 12 volatiles, but is enriched in Ni and Pd. Haripura and Erakot are enriched in Bi and Tl, possibly from the late condensate, mysterite. 相似文献
