Many objections have been raised as to the ability of subcontinental lithospheric mantle to produce voluminous amounts of basalt, because this upper part of the mantle is thought to be refractory, and the geotherm is rarely above the peridotite solidus at these depths under continents. However, in the Pacific Northwest of the USA during the Neogene, the subcontinental lithospehric mantle has been proposed as a key source for basalts erupted within the northern Basin and Range, and for the Columbia River flood basalts erupted on the Columbia Plateau. An alternative explanation to melting in the subcontinental lithospheric mantle, which equally well explains the chemical compositions thought to originate there, is that these magmas were contaminated by crust of varying ages. Calc-alkaline lavas, which occupy the Blue Mountains in the center of this region, hold clues to the latter process. Their elevated trace element ratios (e.g., Ba/Zr, K2O/P2O5), coupled with differentiation indicators such as Mg? [molar Mg/(Mg?+?Fe)], and Sr, Nd, and Pb isotopic compositions, can most reasonably be explained by crustal contamination. Appraisal of continental peridotite xenolith data indicates that high trace element ratios such as Ba/Zr in continental basalts cannot result from melting in the subcontinental lithospheric mantle. Instead, as with the calc-alkaline lavas, these high ratios in the tholeiites most likely indicate crustal contamination. Furthermore, the peridotite xenoliths do not have a relative depletion in Nb and Ta that is observed in most of the lavas within the region. Relatively minor volumes of tholeiites erupted in late Neogene times in the northern Basin and Range (Hi-Mg olivine tholeiites) and Columbia Plateau (Saddle Mountains basalts), are the only lavas which have trace element and isotopic compositions consistent with being derived from, or largely interacting with a subcontinental lithospheric mantle in the Pacific Northwest. In contrast to the prior studies, we suggest that the mantle sources for most of the basalts in this region were ultimately beneath the lithospheric mantle.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Introduced aquatic macrophytes can dominate small agricultural waterways in summer and autumn becoming a significant management problem. Excessive growth can clog waterways, causing drainage issues and reducing agricultural productivity while in-stream velocities are reduced and sedimentation increased. Consequently, water managers remove them by mechanical clearance, chemical spray and cutting which can be costly and have negative impacts on in-stream habitat and ecological health. We trialled three tools to reduce macrophytes: hand-weeding, weed mat and artificial shading, at a reach-scale (50?m) and larger-scale (200–400?m). Hand-weeding reduced cover in the short-term, however macrophytes recovered to pre-treatment levels within one season. Weed mat along the banks was effective at reducing emergent macrophytes, particularly Erythranthe guttata (monkey musk) and Nasturtium microphyllum (watercress). Weed mat lasted for several growing seasons and continued to be effective. Shading over the waterway using polythene markedly reduced submerged macrophytes indicating that heavy shading by riparian plantings could reduce submerged macrophytes in the longer-term. These results indicate that in the short-term, weed mat could be used to limit sprawling emergent macrophytes. In the longer-term, weed mat used in conjunction with riparian planting could provide shading so that macrophyte cover in these small waterways could be reduced and controlled.  相似文献

Living coastal barriers, such as coral reefs, tidal marshes, mangroves and shellfish beds are widely recognized for their potential role in mitigating flood risk. Limited data exists, however, for assessing the effectiveness of these natural defenses as forms of flood mitigation. In particular, very few mature shellfish beds exist today for modern study due to their destruction in the past few centuries. As an alternative method of study, we present here sedimentary reconstructions of storm overwash from coastal ponds internal to New York Harbor. We use these reconstructions to show that the initial degradation of oyster beds following European settlement of the area coincides with a significant increase in wave‐derived overwash deposition at all three of our field sites. Numerical simulations of two flood events of record in the harbor (Hurricane Sandy and a severe winter storm in 1992) were run without and with oyster beds of varying heights (1 m above the seafloor‐to‐intertidal). Simulations show that the removal of these oyster beds increases wave energy directly off‐shore of our field sites by between 30% and 200%. Sedimentary reconstructions and wave modeling experiments therefore both support oyster beds serving as a significant form of coastal protection prior to European disturbance. The chemical characteristics of bulk (sterile-filtered) and high molecular-weight dissolved organic matter (HMW DOM) were analyzed for freshwater (St. Louis River, Minnesota to Lake Superior) and saline (Elizabeth River, Virginia to Chesapeake Bay) river-to-receiving basin transects. Dissolved organic carbon concentrations and UV–Visible spectroscopy of bulk DOM demonstrated a reduction in organic carbon, colored DOM and aromatic compounds downstream in both transects. The proportion of DOM recoverable via ultrafiltration as HMW material also decreased downstream in both transects, although there was an offset in recoveries between the transects that may be explained by the effects of ionic strength and/or differences in ultrafiltration technique. The analysis of HMW DOM by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy illustrated similar trends between transects, with a general shift from aromatic/carboxylic compounds nearshore to aliphatic/carbohydrate materials offshore. The parallel changes observed along saline and freshwater transects imply that similar processes play significant roles in the down-gradient alteration of DOM and that ionic strength or pH changes cause second-order effects.  相似文献

Justice dilemmas associated with climate change and the regulatory responses to it pose challenges for global governance, arguably hampering progress and raising concerns over efficacy and relevance. Scholarly literature suggests that transnational civil society groups can help address problems of governance and injustice that cross borders and pit states against each other. Findings of a comparative, qualitative study of climate justice advocacy suggest, however, that civil society groups' work in the US and EU is significantly shaped by institutional factors specific to those regimes, limiting advocates' broader impact. Moreover, political opportunities for the pursuit of climate action, and justice particularly, have diminished in those settings. By contrast, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) provides greater opportunities for discussions of justice, although civil society actors are significantly constrained within it. It is argued that greater roles for civil society in the UNFCCC could prove constructive in the face of current challenges connected with justice issues. Three themes in civil society advocacy linking principles of global justice with current climate policy debates are summarized. Finally, it is suggested that the first iteration of the UNFCCC Periodic Review provides timely opportunities to more fully draw upon civil society's potential contributions toward a fair and effective global climate regime.

Policy relevance

The roles of civil society organizations in climate governance were examined in three policy contexts: the UNFCCC, the US, and the EU, with special attention to advocacy addressing issues of equity and justice, identified as key challenges for a post-2012 global agreement. Findings suggest that (1) civil society roles are significantly constrained in each context, and (2) political opportunities for climate advocacy have diminished since 2009 in the US and EU, underlining (3) the continued salience of the UNFCCC as a forum for engagement and the construction of effective and equitable climate policy. Potential exists for increased civil society involvement at the UNFCCC to help resolve obstacles based in divergent national priorities. Three areas of justice-focused civil society activity are reviewed for current negotiation topics and the governance structure of the institution. The current UNFCCC Periodic Review is identified as an opportunity to increase civil society involvement.  相似文献

海洋预报是进行海上活动的安全保障,海洋预报系统技术已经成为现代海洋气象业务的技术支撑。海洋观测、数据同化、数值模拟和高性能计算机等技术的进步极大地推动着海洋业务化预报的发展。采用大气数值模式(WRF)、海洋数值模式(CROCO)和海浪数值模式(SWAN)的多模式高分辨率离线耦合方式,添加南京信息工程大学“海洋数值模拟与观测实验室”团队自主研发的一系列海洋模式参数化方案,包括浪致混合参数化方案、亚中尺度参数化方案、海山诱导混合参数化方案以及涡旋诱导的沿等密度面和跨等密度面混合参数化方案,并通过同化技术和最新的人工智能技术与观测资料相结合,构建一种面向中国边缘海的风浪流多参数耦合预报系统,用于海上风电功率的预报和其他海洋灾害预警。实际观测资料的验证表明,该预报系统能较准确地模拟海上风场、海流、海温、波浪、潮汐等海洋气象要素。同时实现了按需实时可视化全景展示。  相似文献

Spinel harzburgite and websterite mantle xenoliths from Simcoe volcano in southern Washington represent fragments of mantle lithosphere from the back-arc side of the Cascade arc front. Previous studies have shown that metasomatism by either silica-rich fluids or hydrous melts crystallized phlogopite, imparted high oxygen fugacities (0.3 to 1.4 log units above QFM), and more radiogenic Os isotopic compositions on these peridotites. These features are consistent with part or all of the metasomatic agent being derived from the Juan de Fuca slab. New Re–Os, Sm–Nd, Sr, and U–Th–Pb isotopic data shed further light on the origin and composition of the metasomatic agent. The clinopyroxenes from the xenoliths have correlated Pb isotopic compositions (206Pb/204Pb=18.63–19.55, 207Pb/204Pb=15.56–15.63, 208Pb/204Pb=38.22–38.87). The most radiogenic Pb isotopic compositions extend beyond the most radiogenic Pb isotopic compositions for the Cascade arc lavas and display a shallower trend. Mixtures between Juan de Fuca basalts and pelagic or terrigenous sediments would result in Pb isotopic compositions that are not radiogenic enough in 207Pb/204Pb and 208Pb/204Pb at the high 206Pb/204Pb end of this array. Therefore, models for rapid transfer of components from the slab to the mantle lithosphere are not viable in this case. Instead, a multi-stage model is preferred. In the first stage, the slab component is transferred via fluid or melt into, and reacts with the hanging wall mantle. This results in a residual slab depleted in Pb relative to U and Th, and consequent high U/Pb and Th/Pb. Additional dehydration or melting of the slab imparts this chemical signature to the peridotite in the hanging wall. In the second stage, the hybridized hanging wall peridotite evolves for tens of million years until corner flow drags it down to deeper levels in the mantle wedge where melting occurs in response to higher temperatures. In the third stage, this melt migrates upward where it metasomatizes the mantle lithosphere represented by the Simcoe xenoliths. Trace element compositions of the clinopyroxenes, and the presence of high alkali glasses in the xenoliths, are consistent with the metasomatic agent derived from the hybridized hanging wall being alkali-rich, and possibly similar to potassic-rich lavas found in arc and back-arc settings. These data therefore demonstrate the importance of the hybridized hanging wall mantle above slabs as a source for melts which can be metasomatic agents in the upper mantle, and as a site for storage of material derived from the slab for periods of at least tens of million years.  相似文献
