The Rocky Mountains in the USA and Canada encompass the interior cordillera of western North America, from the southern Yukon to northern New Mexico. Annual weather patterns are cold in winter and mild in summer. Precipitation has high seasonal and interannual variation and may differ by an order of magnitude between geographically close locales, depending on slope, aspect and local climatic and orographic conditions. The region's hydrology is characterized by the accumulation of winter snow, spring snowmelt and autumnal baseflows. During the 2–3-month ‘spring runoff’ period, rivers frequently discharge > 70% of their annual water budget and have instantaneous discharges 10–100 times mean low flow. Complex weather patterns characterized by high spatial and temporal variability make predictions of future conditions tenuous. However, general patterns are identifiable; northern and western portions of the region are dominated by maritime weather patterns from the North Pacific, central areas and eastern slopes are dominated by continental air masses and southern portions receive seasonally variable atmospheric circulation from the Pacific and the Gulf of Mexico. Significant interannual variations occur in these general patterns, possibly related to ENSO (El Niño–Southern Oscillation) forcing. Changes in precipitation and temperature regimes or patterns have significant potential effects on the distribution and abundance of plants and animals. For example, elevation of the timber-line is principally a function of temperature. Palaeolimnological investigations have shown significant shifts in phyto- and zoo-plankton populations as alpine lakes shift between being above or below the timber-line. Likewise, streamside vegetation has a significant effect on stream ecosystem structure and function. Changes in stream temperature regimes result in significant changes in community composition as a consequence of bioenergetic factors. Stenothermic species could be extirpated as appropriate thermal criteria disappear. Warming temperatures may geographically isolate cold water stream fishes in increasingly confined headwaters. The heat budgets of large lakes may be affected resulting in a change of state between dimictic and warm monomictic character. Uncertainties associated with prediction are increased by the planting of fish in historically fishless, high mountain lakes and the introduction of non-native species of fishes and invertebrates into often previously simple food-webs of large valley bottom lakes and streams. Many of the streams and rivers suffer from the anthropogenic effects of abstraction and regulation. Likewise, many of the large lakes receive nutrient loads from a growing human population. We concluded that: (1) regional climate models are required to resolve adequately the complexities of the high gradient landscapes; (2) extensive wilderness preserves and national park lands, so prevalent in the Rocky Mountain Region, provide sensitive areas for differentiation of anthropogenic effects from climate effects; and (3) future research should encompass both short-term intensive studies and long-term monitoring studies developed within comprehensive experimental arrays of streams and lakes specifically designed to address the issue of anthropogenic versus climatic effects. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Surface water draining granitic bedrock in Yosemite National Park exhibits considerable variability in chemical composition, despite the relative homogeneity of bedrock chemistry. Other geological factors, including the jointing and distribution of glacial till, appear to exert strong controls on water composition. Chemical data from three surface water surveys in the upper Merced River basin conducted in August 1981, June 1988 and August 1991 were analysed and compared with mapped geological, hydrological and topographic features to identify the solute sources and processes that control water chemistry within the basin during baseflow. Water at most of the sampling sites was dilute, with alkalinities ranging from 26 to 77 μequiv. l−1. Alkalinity was much higher in two subcatchments, however, ranging from 51 to 302 μequiv. l−1. Base cations and silica were also significantly higher in these two catchments than in the rest of the watershed. Concentrations of weathering products in surface water were correlated to the fraction of each subcatchment underlain by surficial material, which is mostly glacial till. Silicate mineral weathering is the dominant control on concentrations of alkalinity, silica and base cations, and ratios of these constituents in surface water reflect the composition of local bedrock. Chloride concentrations in surface water samples varied widely, ranging from <1 to 96 μequiv. l−1. The annual volume-weighted mean chloride concentration in the Merced River at the Happy Isles gauge from 1968 to 1990 was 26 μequiv. l−1, which was five times higher than in atmospheric deposition (4–5 μequiv. l−1), suggesting that a source of chloride exists within the watershed. Saline groundwater springs, whose locations are probably controlled by vertical jointing in the bedrock, are the most likely source of the chloride. Sulphate concentrations varied much less than most other solutes, ranging from 3 to 14 μequiv. l−1. Concentrations of sulphate in quarterly samples collected at the watershed outlet also showed relatively little variation, suggesting that sulphate may be regulated to some extent by a within-watershed process, such as sulphate adsorption.  相似文献

Abstract— The CBb chondrites are rare, primitive, metal‐rich meteorites that contain several features, including zoned metal, that have previously been interpreted as evidence for origins in the solar nebula. We have measured concentrations of Ni, Cu, Ga, Ru, Pd, Ir, and Au within both zoned and unzoned metal grains in the CBb chondrites Hammadah al Hamra (HaH) 237 and Queen Alexandra Range (QUE) 94627 using laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The refractory elements Ni, Ru, and Ir are enriched in the grain cores, relative to the rims, in the zoned metal. All refractory elements are uniform across the unzoned metal grains, at concentrations that are highly variable between grains. The volatile elements Cu, Ga, and Au are usually depleted relative to chondritic abundances and are most often uniform within the grains but are sometimes slightly elevated at the outermost rim. The Pd abundances are nearly uniform, at close to chondritic abundances, in all of the metal grains. A condensation origin is inferred for both types of metal. The data support a model in which the zoned metal formed at high temperatures, in a relatively rapidly cooling nebular gas, and the unzoned metal formed at lower temperatures and at a lower cooling rate. The CBb metal appears to have formed by a process very similar to that of the CH chondrites, but the CBb meteorite components experienced even less thermal alteration following their formation and are among the most primitive materials known to have formed in the solar nebula.  相似文献

Although GIS are used extensively in modern socio-economic studies, their application to historical analysis, especially of relatively early periods, is in its infancy. Yet, as this paper demonstrates, GIS has particular utility both for combining information from disparate and unstandardized historical sources and for reconstructing broad distribution patterns from spatially discontinuous data. When combined with cluster analysis, it also provides a powerful tool for analysing and classifying data sets and representing the results thereby obtained. This paper describes the stages whereby data extracted from almost 10 000 original Inquisitiones Post Mortem, dating from 1300 to 1349, are ultimately transformed into a national land-use classification map for the critical period immediately prior to the Black Death of 1348.  相似文献

The Ordovician Snowdon Volcanic Centre (SVC) of North Walescomprises a bimodal basalt–subalkaline/peralkaline associationemplaced around a caldera within a shallow marine environment.The tectonic setting was associated with closure of the LowerPalaeozoic Iapetus Ocean and cessation of ocean plate subduction.The SVC volcanic products include basaltic lavas and pyroclasticrocks, rhyolitic pyroclastic flow deposits, high-level intrusions,domes, and flows, together with reworked equivalents. A programmeof detailed field mapping, sampling, and chemical analysis hasbeen used to evaluate the structure and magmatic evolution ofthe SVC volcanic system. SVC basalts show a range in chemicalcharacteristics between volcanic arc type and within-plate,ocean island basalt (OIB) type. Subalkaline, silica-oversaturatedintermediate intrusions (icelandites) and five chemically distinctgroups of extrusive and intrusive subalkaline/peralkaline rhyolites(termed A1, A2, B1, B2, and B3) were emplaced during the evolutionof the SVC. This evolution was driven by material and thermalinput from basaltic magma. The SVC basaltic lavas were derivedas partial melts from a heterogeneous volcanic arc to OIB-typespinel lherzolite mantle and experienced up to 60% olivine gabbrofractionation during storage in sill networks in the sub-crustor lower crust. Some magma batches experienced further fractionalcrystallization ({small tilde}70%) and minor crustal contamination({small tilde}10%) to yield the icelandites. Trace element andNd isotope data do not favour an origin for the rhyolites bypartial or total fusion of likely crustal material, and thefive rhyolite groups are regarded as distinct homogeneous batchesof magma derived from varied basaltic magmas. The icelanditesand peralkaline rhyolites (group B3) result, respectively, from{small tilde}50% and {small tilde}80–90% zircon-free fractionalcrystallization of SVC basalts. The subalkaline rhyolites (groupsA1 and B1) result from {small tilde}80–90% fractionalcrystallization of subduction-related basalts similar to thoseof Ordovician basalts which pre-date the Lower Rhyolitic TuffFormation, and groups A2 and B2 were formed by mixing and homogenizationof A1, B1, and B3 magma batches. These data and interpretationsprovide the basis of a model for the complex evolution of asilicic magma system below the SVC caldera around the time ofcessation of Caledonian subduction in North Wales. Rhyolitemagma chambers were short lived and discontinuous; the largestwas probably disc shaped and was almost entirely evacuated duringa >60-km3 ash-flow eruption.  相似文献

Carbonate nodules and slabs in late Holocene shelly terrigenous deposits of the modern Fraser River delta (~49°N) are formed close to the seafloor by precipitation from saline pore waters of mainly fibrous to bladed crystals of high-Mg (~ 10–20 mol% MgCO3) calcite cement as coalescing isopachous crusts on grains. Previous reports that the cement is low-Mg calcite are not supported by this study. Highly negative δ13C values of ? 7 to ? 59‰ for the cements indicate that the bulk of their carbonate carbon was derived from the microbiological degradation of organic matter in the deltaic deposits during shallow burial. In particular, the production of biogenic methane (CH4) by anaerobic bacterial fermentation, its upward migration, chemical or biological oxidation to CO2 and neutralization in the near-surface sediment, and diffusion to microenvironments relatively enriched in organic components, are a possible set of conditions influencing the process and sites of carbonate cementation. Methane-derived Mg-calcite appears also to be the major submarine cement in several other modern occurrences of lithified shallow-water terrigenous sands and muds at non-tropical latitudes.  相似文献

ABSTRACT The relative abundance of thirty-two surface features identified on the surfaces of quartz sand grains from eight coded samples was noted independently by five scanning electron microscopists. These data (reduced to binary form) were the subject of canonical variate analyses which discriminated clearly between all samples. Thirteen variables were important in distinguishing between the eight samples. This indicates that there are no single key surface features which, on their own, would allow rapid environmental discrimination. The contention that a multiplicity of surface features should be recorded for the purpose of environmental discrimination is, therefore, upheld.
Operator variance, although considerable in the recognition of individual surface features, is negligible in discrimination of samples based on binary data. The SEM technique of analysis of quartz grain surface textures is a reliable and statistically valid means of discriminating between samples from different environments.  相似文献

Mass transport deposits, up to 3·9 m thick, have been identified from piston cores collected from canyon floors and inter-canyon ridges on the central Scotian Slope. These deposits are characterized by four distinct mass-transport facies – folded mud, dipping stratified mud, various types of mud-clast conglomerate, and diamicton. Commonly, the folded and stratified mud facies are overlain by mud-clast conglomerate, followed by diamicton and then by turbidity current deposits of well-sorted sand. Stratified and folded mud facies were sourced from canyon walls. Overconsolidation in clasts in some mud-clast conglomerates indicates that the source sediment was buried 12–33 m, much deeper than the present cored depth, implying a source in canyon heads and canyon walls. The known stratigraphic framework for the region and new radiocarbon dating suggests that there were four or five episodes of sediment failure within the past 17 ka, most of which are found in more than one canyon system. The most likely mechanism for triggering occasional, synchronous failures in separate canyons is seismic ground shaking. The facies sequence is interpreted as resulting from local slides being overlain by mud-clast conglomerate deposits derived from failures farther upslope and finally by coarser-grained deposits resulting from retrogressive failure re-mobilizing upper slope sediments to form debrisflows and turbidity currents.  相似文献

华北克拉通岩石圈减薄和破坏机理长期以来存在争议,基于岩石学、岩石地球的化学分析研究突出强调深部过程的重要性。前人提出了两种重要模式:包括以拆沉作用为代表的top-down tectonics模型和以热-机械侵蚀与化学侵蚀,或地幔置换、交代作用的bottom-up tectonics模型。然而,对于这两种模式而言尚存在许多无法合理解释的问题,比如在此深部过程中,区域性岩石圈伸展有多大的贡献?地壳伸展构造是作为深部过程的响应,还是同为岩石圈伸展的产物?本文基于早白垩世东亚地区(尤其是华北克拉通东部地区)伸展构造与岩浆活动的综合分析,揭示出华北克拉通东部不同地区伸展构造变形与岩浆活动之间的时、空和成因关系有一定的差异。但整体上看,岩石圈伸展起着主导作用,控制着岩浆上侵和就位,在拆离断层下盘侵入形成各种规模的花岗质为主的侵入体,或于上盘喷发形成火山-沉积岩盆地。在伸展构造发育的不同阶段,可以有伸展早期、伸展期及伸展期后的岩浆活动。岩浆活动的强度及岩浆源区特点有显著的时空变化。一方面,在同一地区不同演化阶段其源区有很大的差异。表现为主体上是早期以古老下地壳源为主,随着壳/幔伸展作用演化,逐渐向混合源或独立幔源的演化。同时,不同地区岩浆源区的变化规律也显著不同。以胶辽地区为例,胶东整体上是壳幔混合源区对于岩浆演化有重要贡献;而辽东地区具有显著的源区演化特点:从剪切早期古老下地壳源区为主,并伴有幔源物质加入,剪切期古老下地壳为主,到剪切晚期和剪切期后以新生下地壳为主。本文认为岩石圈伸展的壳/幔拆离模型(Parallel Extension Tectonics),可以合理地解释华北克拉通及邻区早白垩世构造-岩浆活动性。在该模型中,遭受伸展的华北克拉通岩石圈发生壳-幔拆离作用。在岩石圈伸展作用期间,地壳层次的拆离作用与岩石圈地幔层次上的拆离作用可以是耦合的或者是解耦的,从而导致华北克拉通岩石圈减薄过程中在地壳尺度上的拆离作用与变质核杂岩的剥露有三种不同的类型:同岩浆活动型伸展(C型:Co-magmatism mode extension)、无岩浆活动型伸展(A型:Amagmatism mode extension)和多阶段混合型(M型:Multi-mode extension)。  相似文献
