The procedure developed in Smith (1974) to model the radiation source for type III bursts is modified to include scattering of radiation in the source itself. Since the inhomogeneities in the source must have the same statistical properties as the inhomogeneities used in tracing radiation from the source to the observer, these two parts of the type III problem are no longer uncoupled. Thus we use inhomogeneities consistent with the scattering inhomogeneities of Steinberg et al. (1971) and Riddle (1974) and apply the procedure to an archetype ‘fundamental-harmonic’ pair observed at Culgoora on 28 September, 1973 at 0319 UT. We find that it is impossible to model this burst with a source which is homogeneous in the sense that every part of the source has the same energy density in plasma waves. The density inhomogeneities in the source severely hamper amplification of the supposed fundamental. Possible ways out of this dilemma are discussed, including second harmonic pairs and a source with an inhomogeneous distribution of plasma waves. Four months of eddy correlation data collected over a grass field and a nearby sage brush community are analyzed to examine
the adjustment of the boundary-layer structure as it flows from the heated brush to the snow-covered grass. The grass site
includes a 34-m tower with seven levels of eddy correlation data. The midday heat flux over the snow-covered grass and bare
ground surfaces is often downward particularly with melting conditions, while the corresponding heat flux over the brush is
almost always upward. For most of these cases, a stable internal boundary layer over the snow is well defined in terms of
vertical profiles of the buoyancy flux over the snow-covered grass. The stable internal boundary layer is generally embedded
within a deeper layer of flux divergence corresponding to increasing upward heat flux with height above the internal boundary
layer. With thin snow cover, the surface heat flux over the grass is weak upward due to heating of grass protruding above
the snow so that the flow adjusts to a decrease of the upward surface heat flux in the downwind direction. This common case
of an adjusting boundary layer contrasts with the formation of an internal boundary layer due to a change of sign of the surface
heat in flux the downwind direction. The adjustment of the boundary layer to the decrease of the surface heat flux leads to
vertical divergence of the upward heat flux in contrast to the usual heated boundary layer over homogeneous surfaces. The
consequences of the cooling due to the vertical divergence of the heat flux are discussed in terms of the heat budget of the

We investigate the structure of slow-mode MHD shocks in a plasma where both radiation and thermal conduction are important. In such a plasma a slow shock dissociates into an extended foreshock, an isothermal subshock, and a downstream radiative cooling region. Our analysis, which is both numerical and analytical, focuses on the nearly switch-off shocks which are generated by magnetic reconnection in a strong magnetic field. These shocks convert magnetic energy into kinetic energy and heat, and we find that for typical flare conditions about f of the conversion occurs in the subshock while the remaining 1/3 occurs in the foreshock. We also find that no stable, steady-state solutions exist for radiative slow shocks unless the temperature in the radiative region downstream of the subshock falls below 105 K. These results suggest that about 2/3 of the magnetic energy released in flare loops is released at the top of the loop, while the remaining 1/3 is released in the legs of the loop. 相似文献

The resistive MHD equations are numerically solved in two dimensions for an initial-boundary-value problem which simulates reconnection between an emerging magnetic flux region and an overlying coronal magnetic field. The emerging region is modelled by a cylindrical flux tube with a poloidal magnetic field lying in the same plane as the external, coronal field. The plasma betas of the emerging and coronal regions are 1.0 and 0.1, respectively, and the magnetic Reynolds number for the system is 2 × 103. At the beginning of the simulation the tube starts to emerge through the base of the rectangular computational domain, and, when the tube is halfway into the computational domain, its position is held fixed so that no more flux of plasma enters through the base. Because the time-scale of the emergence is slower than the Alfvén time-scale, but faster than the reconnection time-scale, a region of closed loops forms at the base. These loops are gradually opened and reconnected with the overlying, external magnetic field as time proceeds.The evolution of the plasma can be divided into four phases as follows: First, an initial, quasi-steady phase during which most of the emergence is completed. During this phase, reconnection initially occurs at the slow rate predicted by the Sweet model of diffusive reconnection, but increases steadily until the fast rate predicted by the Petschek model of slow-shock reconnection is approached. Second, an impulsive phase with large-scale, super-magnetosonic flows. This phase appears to be triggered when the internal mechanical equilibrium inside the emerging flux tube is upset by reconnection acting on the outer layers of the flux tube. During the impulsive phase most of the flux tube pinches off from the base to form a cylindrical magnetic island, and temporarily the reconnection rate exceeds the steady-state Petschek rate. (At the time of the peak reconnection rate, the diffusion region at the X-line is not fully resolved, and so this may be a numerical artifact.) Third, a second quasi-steady phase during which the magnetic island created in the impulsive phase is slowly dissipated by continuing, but low-level, reconnection. And fourth, a static, non-evolving phase containing a potential, current-free field and virtually no flow.During the short time in the impulsive phase when the reconnection rate exceeds the steady-state Petschek rate, a pile-up of magnetic flux at the neutral line occurs. Evaluations are presented of the time-average heating at different latitudes and heights due to energy flux divergence of the equinox diurnal and semidiurnal tides calculated by Forbes (1982a,h)from 0 to 400 km.It is found that diurnal tidal heating maximizes in the region of 80 km and semidiurnal has a sharp maximum at 108 km. Thermospheric diurnal oscillations give rise to a second region of heating that maximizes at 200 km and effectively transports energy from low to high latitudes.Global means are evaluated for the time-averaged vertical energy fluxes and heating rates: below 130 km, the results for the diurnal tide agree with those for the (1,1) mode alone, and for the semidiurnal tide, heating rates below 130 km are the same as those that would he obtained without the thermospheric semidiurnal excitation.Comparisons are made from 90 to 170 km between the combined diurnal and semidiurnal heating rates and previously reported rates due to e.u.v. radiation, Sq currents and gravity waves. 相似文献

Uranyl silicates such as uranophane and Na-boltwoodite appear to control the solubility of uranium in certain contaminated sediments at the US Department of Energy Hanford site [Liu, C., Zachara, J.M., Qafoku, O., McKinley, J.P., Heald, S.M., Wang, Z. 2004. Consequently, the solubility of synthetic Na-boltwoodite, Na(UO2)(SiO3OH) · 1.5H2O, was determined over a wide range of bicarbonate concentrations, from circumneutral to alkaline pH, that are representative of porewater and groundwater compositions at the Hanford site and calcareous environments generally. Experiments were open to air. Results show that Na-boltwoodite dissolution was nearly congruent and its solubility and dissolution kinetics increased with increasing bicarbonate concentration and pH. A consistent set of solubility constants were determined from circumneutral pH (0 added bicarbonate) to alkaline pH (50 mM added bicarbonate). Average or 5.85 ± 0.0.26; using the Pitzer ion-interaction model or Davies equation, respectively. This is the first paper of a series focused on investigating the star formation and evolutionary history of the two early-type galaxies NGC 1407 and NGC 1400. They are the two brightest galaxies of the NGC 1407 (or Eridanus-A) group, one of the 60 groups studied as part of the Group Evolution Multi-wavelength Study.
Here, we present new high signal-to-noise ratio long-slit spectroscopic data obtained at the ESO 3.6-m telescope and high-resolution multiband imaging data from the Hubble Space Telescope /Advanced Camera for Surveys and wide-field imaging from Subaru Suprime-Cam. We spatially resolved integrated spectra out to ∼0.6 (NGC 1407) and ∼1.3 (NGC 1400) effective radii. The radial profiles of the kinematic parameters vrot , σ, h 3 and h 4 are measured. The surface brightness profiles are fitted to different galaxy light models and the colour distributions analysed. The multiband images are modelled to derive isophotal shape parameters and residual galaxy images. The parameters from the surface brightness profile fitting are used to estimate the mass of the possible central supermassive black hole in NGC 1407. The galaxies are found to be rotationally supported and to have a flat core in the surface brightness profiles. Elliptical isophotes are observed at all radii and no fine structures are detected in the residual galaxy images. From our results, we can also discard a possible interaction between NGC 1400, NGC 1407 and the group intergalactic medium. We estimate a mass of ∼1.03 × 109 M⊙ for the supermassive black hole in NGC 1407 galaxy. 相似文献

The time it takes water to travel through a catchment, from when it enters as rain and snow to when it leaves as streamflow, may influence stream water quality and catchment sensitivity to environmental change. Most studies that estimate travel times do so for only a few, often rain-dominated, catchments in a region and use relatively short data records (<10 years). A better understanding of how catchment travel times vary across a landscape may help diagnose inter-catchment differences in water quality and response to environmental change. We used comprehensive and long-term observations from the Turkey Lakes Watershed Study in central Ontario to estimate water travel times for 12 snowmelt-dominated headwater catchments, three of which were impacted by forest harvesting. Chloride, a commonly used water tracer, was measured in streams, rain, snowfall and as dry atmospheric deposition over a 31 year period. These data were used with a lumped convolution integral approach to estimate mean water travel times. We explored relationships between travel times and catchment characteristics such as catchment area, slope angle, flowpath length, runoff ratio and wetland coverage, as well as the impact of harvesting. Travel time estimates were then used to compare differences in stream water quality between catchments. Our results show that mean travel times can be variable for small geographic areas and are related to catchment characteristics, in particular flowpath length and wetland cover. In addition, forest harvesting appeared to decrease mean travel times. Estimated mean travel times had complex relationships with water quality patterns. Results suggest that biogeochemical processes, particularly those present in wetlands, may have a greater influence on water quality than catchment travel times. 相似文献
