Spectrophotometric data show that major compositional groups among outer solar system (OSS) surfaces include bright ices and at least two distinct classes of blackish carbonaceous-like materials, called C-type and RD-type. VJHK colorimetry of asteroids, satellites, and laboratory samples shows that these three classes can be distinguished by VJHK colors. We define an “α index” that denotes the position of objects in VJHK color - color diagrams; it empirically increases with albedo and ice/dirt ratio. We use the above data to define color fields that may be useful in interpreting our observations of eight comets (1980–1981). All eight comets have colors generally resembling RD asteroids and are inconsistent with reflection off clean ice surfaces. The observations suggest that these comets' halos contain RD dirt or dirty ice grains colored by RD dirt, supporting J. Gradie and J. Veverka's [Nature283, 840–842 (1980)] prediction of RD, rather than C, material in comets. Remote Comet P/Schwassmann-Wachmann 1 was observed both during outburst and quiescence and had the highest α index of any observed comet. Comet α indices appear to be correlated with solar distance. Further work will be needed to clarify possible coloring effects due to particle size, dispersal, and composition. We suggest a number of physical interpretations based on a single two-component mixing model, which assumes that all OSS planetesimals formed primarily from bright ices and dark carboneceous-like dirt, consistent with condensation theory. We discuss differentiation processes that concentrated one component or the other at the surface. All measured OSS interplanetary bodies have surfaces of dark dirt or dark dirty ice colored by the dirt component. Comets, consistent with the Whipple dirty iceberg model, are such objects close enough to the Sun for volatilization to throw dirty ice grains into the coma. In remote comets, the ice component of the grains remains stable, and we see dirty ice grains; in near comets, the ice component vaporizes, and we see dirt grains. A volatile-depleted dusty regolith on P/Schwassmann-Wachmann 1 and other remote comets could explain their eruptive behavior by means of gas pressure buildup in the porous, weakly bonded dust.  相似文献

Daily measurements of atmospheric sulfur dioxide (SO2) concentrations were performed from March 1989 to January 1991 at Amsterdam Island (37°50 S–77°30 E), a remote site located in the southern Indian Ocean. Long-range transport of continental air masses was studied using Radon (222Rn) as continental tracer. Average monthly SO2 concentrations range from less than 0.2 to 3.9 nmol m-3 (annual average = 0.7 nmol m-3) and present a seasonal cycle with a minimum in winter and a maximum in summer, similar to that described for atmospheric DMS concentrations measured during the same period. Clear diel correlation between atmospheric DMS and SO2 concentrations is also observed during summer. A photochemical box model using measured atmospheric DMS concentrations as input data reproduces the seasonal variations in the measured atmospheric SO2 concentrations within ±30%. Comparing between computed and measured SO2 concentrations allowed us to estimate a yield of SO2 from DMS oxidation of about 70%.  相似文献

The atmospheric concentration of peroxyacetylnitrate (PAN) was measured during a cruise of the R.S. Polarstern from Bremerhaven (Germany) to Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil) in September/ October 1988. The measurements were made in-situ by a combination of electron capture gaschromatography with a cryogenic preconcentration step. The theoretical lower limit of detection (3) was 0.4 ppt. The mixing ratios of PAN varied by more than three orders of magnitude from 2000 ppt in the English Channel to less than 0.4 ppt south of the Azores (38° N). South of 35° N, PAN levels were below the detection limit, except at 30–31° S off the eastern coast of South America. Here, PAN mixing ratios of 10 to 100 ppt were detected in continentally influenced air masses. Detectable levels of PAN were mostly observed in air masses of continental or high northern origin. Changes in the wind directions were usually associated with substantial changes in the PAN mixing ratios.  相似文献

The annual mean sea-level time series for Stockholm (Sweden) for 1825–1984 (160 data points) had a large long-term negative (almost linear, only slightly quadratic) trend. After correcting for the same, the detrended series was subjected to maximum entropy spectral analysis (MESA). Choosing selected periodicities for further multiple regression analysis, series for the first 80 yr (1825–1904) showed periodicities at T = 2.40, 5.0, 6.1, 13.5, 14.8 and 32 yr, significant at a 2 level. The three largest peaks (italicized) had amplitudes of approximately (2.5–3.0) ± 0.8 cm. The latter 80 yr (1905–1984) showed significant periodicities at T= 2.05, 2.7, 3.0, 3.6, 4.4, 5.5, 6.3, 7.7, 9.8, 20.5 and 33 yr. The three largest peaks (italicized) had amplitudes of approximately (2.0–2.5) ± 0.7 cm. The whole period of 160 yr (1825–1984) showed significant periodicities at T = 2.05, 2.9, 3.2, 4.5, 4.9, 5.6, 6.4, 7.8, 11.0, 13.7, 14.8, 29 and 43 yr. The three largest peaks (italicized) had amplitudes of approximately (1.6–1.9) ± 0.6 cm. All these significant peaks explained a variance of only about 30% or less, indicating a large random component of approximately 70%. Peaks at T = 11 yr (sunspot cycle) or T = 18.6 yr (lunar nodal term) were either absent or very weak. Most of the other peaks were transient (present in the first 80 yr or the latter 80 yr) except an uncertain quasibiennial oscillation (QBO) (T = 2–3 yr) and T = 5–6 yr and T 30 yr, which seemed to be persistent throughout the whole period. Some periodicities seem to resemble those seen in the Southern Oscillation (SO) index.  相似文献

Summary Our discussion is concerned with the common effect of the non-uniformity of layer rotation and stratification. We have assumed a model of differential rotation with the upper part of the layer rotating more slowly, the bottom part more quickly. The upper part of the layer is stratified stably, the bottom part unstably.The thermal instabilities are preferred in the strong differential rotation case and they are the most easily excited by a strong magnetic field (102–103). The direction of its propagation is westward in the uniformly stratified layer and eastward in the non-uniformly stratified layer.  相似文献

Climatic characteristics are affected by various systematic and occasional impacts: besides the changes in the observing system (locations of the stations of the meteorological network, instruments, observing procedures), the possible local-scale and global natural and antropogenic impacts on climatic conditions should be taken into account. Apart from the predictability problems, the phenomenological analysis of the climatic variability and the determination of past persistent climatic anomalies are significant problems, among other aspects, as evidence of the possible anomalous behavior of climate or for climate impact studies. In this paper, a special technique for the identification of such shifts in the observational series is presented. The existence of these significant shorter or longer term changes in the mean characteristics for the properly selected adjoining periods of time is the necessary condition for the formation of any more or less unidirectional climatic trends. Actually, the window technique is based on a complete set of orthogonal functions. The sensitivity of the proposed model on its main parameters is also investigated. Summary The method of the automated computation of the gravimetric deflections of the vertical and of the geoidal heights for the European region is described. The work was carried out during the period 1986–1988 by the Topographic Service of the Czechoslovak Army. The computation applies to 20 sheets of the international map 1:1 000 000 (total area of =16c, =30c - see Fig. 1). The mean values of the free-air anomalies for each surface element =5, =7.5, approximately 9 × 9 km, were used with radius of integration of 300 km.  相似文献

In this letter, we report results of time resolved spectra of lightning simulation in air by laser-induced plasma (LIP). The measured electron temperatures varied from (1.7 +/- 0.1)X10(4) K at 600 ns to (1.2 +/- 0.1)X10(4)K at 4 microseconds after the ignition of the plasma. Electron densities in the plasma varied from (7.0 +/- 1.4)X10(17)/cm3 to (9.0 +/- 1.8)X10(16)/cm3 for the above times. We also present, for the first time, a comparison of state variables for LIP and natural lightning. We find that immediately following the ignition both natural lightning and LIP reach temperatures in excess of 16,000K and relax to ambient pressure with different rates. They are expected to approach 2000 - 4000 K temperature range, which is important to chemical synthesis, in an asymptotically similar fashion.  相似文献

The minimum winter temperature series for the United States Gulf Coast for 1799–1988 (190 values) was subjected to Maximum Entropy Spectral Analysis. Significant periodicities in the QBO region (T-2–3 years) and atT=3.7, 4.5, 5.5, 6.5, 7.5, 12.9, 15.5 and 22 years were detected. Some of these were present in the first half only (1799–1893) while others in the latter half only (1894–1988), indicating a transient nature. Also, more than 50% of the variance was random. Many of the significant periodicities are seen in other geophysical parameters. Some may be harmonics of the 11-year sunspot cycle and the 22-year Hale magnetic sunspot cycle.  相似文献

The 1500 m thick sequence of Huronian continental volcanics at Thessalon, Ontario is subdivided into 4 volcanic cycles, each of which includes abundant early mafic end-members, central intermediate flows, and late rhyolite units. Major and trace element concentrations are dominated by extensive gabbroic fractionation trends that ultimately produced two types of felsic flows: (1) rhyolites with high light rare earth element (LREE) and relatively low large-ion lithophile element (LILE) concentrations (high-LREE, low-LILE rhyolites), and (2) following late separation of REE-rich accessory phases, rhyolites depleted in LREE (low-LREE, high-LILE rhyolites). Mafic end-members of individual volcanic cycle are progressively less siliceous and less enriched in LILE and LREE with height in the stratigraphic section. Ti/Zr ratios gradually rise from 35 in early mafic flows to stabilize at about 85 in late units, while average SiO2 contents decrease from 56 to about 50% and Mg# rises from about 48 to 52. -Nd values are consistently negative, indicating variable degrees of pre-fractionation crustal contamination of the end-member magmas during their uprise through the crust. Mixing models are consistent with up to 50% contamination by crustal material of tonalitic hornblende-gneiss composition. A progressive increase in -Nd, from about-5.0 to-0.5 upward in the volcanic succession, reflects a decreasing degree of crustal contamination due to development of insulating layers along margins of the feeder system. Detailed stratigraphic variations suggest that successive magmas batches were intercepted by a progressively fractionating, periodically replenished magma source, giving rise to open-system magmatism. Despite the prevalence of crustal assimilation in the Huronian lavas, (La/Sr)N ratios are too low in least contaminated end-members to be explained by contamination of tholeiitic magmas. The late basalts resemble instead modern island are basalts, and it is suggested that the subcontinental mantle source was enriched by subduction-related processes during crustal formation. Within individual volcanic cycles gabbroic fractionation trends systematically deviate from calculated factors toward compositions characteristic of hornblende-gneiss. Such relations suggest that further crustal contamination of the magmas occurred simultaneous with crystal fractionation. probably within undulating sills at upper crustal levels. Quantitative analysis suggests assimilation/fractional crystallization (A/FC) ratios of about 0.45. As a result of extensive two-stage contamination, rhyolites from the initial volcanic cycle incorporate a total of over 60% of crust.  相似文献
