Human viruses are a common contaminant of shellfish affected by human sewage wastes. They are difficult to detect as they are not easily separated from shellfish tissue. This paper describes a modification of the polyethylene glycol (PEG) precipitation technique for recovery of enteroviruses and F‐specific bacteriophages from the Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas) and the green‐lipped mussel (Perna canaliculus). Modifications adopted were the use of only the digestive gland tissue for virus extraction, resuspension of the primary PEG pellet in 4 volumes of eluent, and the introduction of a secondary PEG precipitation to reconcentrate the virus containing extract. The recovery rate of the virus extraction process was not affected by introduction of the secondary concentration step (overall recovery remained at 60–70% of the virus input). The advantages of reduction of tissue residue in the extract, smaller final volume, and the ability to process 2–3 times the number of individual shellfish for the same effort, improve the practicality of the method. 相似文献

We have measured polarization of the 1.1 mm and 0.8 mm continuum emission for 3 pre-T Tauri stars and 2 T Tauri stars. Positive detections were made for NGC 1333 IRAS 4 and IRAS 16293-2422, while L1551 IRS 5 and HL Tau were only marginally detected. For GG Tau we measured a 2 upper limit of 3%. The polarization is interpreted in terms of thermal emission by magnetically aligned dust grains in circumstellar disks or envelopes. We present spectropolarimetric observations of seven broad-line radio galaxies. We find significantly polarized broad Hα emission in four objects including two, Arp 102B and 3C 390.3, which have double-peaked line profiles. In these objects the prominent redshifted and blueshifted peaks of the broad Hα line have no clear counterparts in polarized flux. This conflicts with theoretical predictions for a relativistic line-emitting disc with an electron scattering atmosphere, one of the leading models advanced to account for the double-peaked lines. The shapes and widths of the polarized line profiles can be explained if, as expected in unified schemes, the scattering occurs near the poles of an obscuring torus. However, the observed polarization position angles favour geometries in which the scattering plane is perpendicular to the radio jet. A configuration in which Hα photons emitted by a biconical flow are scattered off the inner wall of the torus has this property, and would also produce a single-peaked scattered line profile. With the exception of 3C 227, the sample as a whole conforms to the general trend in powerful radio galaxies for the optical polarization to be aligned with the radio source axis, favouring toroidal rather than polar scattering. 相似文献

A series of individual turbidites, correlated over distances >100 km, are present in the recent fill of the Agadir Basin,
offshore northwest Africa. The aim here is to unravel multiple turbidite source areas and flow pathways, and show how turbidite
provenance studies contribute to interpretation of flow processes. Agadir Basin turbidites are sourced from four main areas,
with the majority originating from the siliciclastic Morocco Shelf; their sand-mud distribution is strongly controlled by
flow sediment volume, with relatively low-volume flows dying out within the Agadir Basin and large-volume flows bypassing
significant sediment volumes to basins further downslope. Two large-volume volcaniclastic turbidites are attributed to a Canary
Islands landslide source, while several small mud-dominated turbidites are interpreted to be locally sourced from hemipelagic-draped
seamounts (e.g. Turbidite AB10). Finally, Turbidite AB1 (∼1 ka) is only present in the western Agadir Basin, and is linked
to recent “re-activation” of the Sahara Slide headwall. The muddy suspension clouds of three large-volume flows, all linked
to large-scale landslides, have covered huge areas of seafloor and flowed along or even slightly upslope for long distances.
It is proposed that northeastwards-flowing bottom currents have aided transport of these dilute flow fractions into and across

We discuss the recent advances made in the search for hidden broad line regions in Seyfert and Narrow Line Radio Galaxies (NLRG) using both spectropolarimetry and infrared spectroscopy/spectropolarimetry. Two important results which support the Grand Unification Theory are presented. In the first of these we report that the famous Seyfert 1 NGC 4151 has a scattered component to its broad line region, and is most likely an object where we view obliquely into its occulting torus. In the second, we show high signal to noise observations of scattered broad lines in the NLRG of 3C 234. 相似文献
